TECHNE - (from the Greek, is craftsmanship, craft, or art, is part of the etymological definition of the word.

That is often translated as “craftsmanship”, “craft”, or “art”. Techne is also a part of communication, and affects how human cultures interact.)

Hybrid Reassemble: An Exploration of Craft, Digital Fabrication and Artifact Uniqueness.

How could interior design bring craftsmanship and digital emerging technology together and embrace the value of hand making in the context of the contemporary post-digital society?

The thesis proposes a collaborative artwork space that fosters multidisciplinary creativity in arts and crafts. The proposal is situated in Gowanus, a neighborhood currently under the change from industrial uses to a hub for artists, designers, and makers. The design methodology is based on the use of digital design and fabrication technologies combined with traditional craft for the production of space and creative material experimentation.

Bloom is a 9 foot tall freestanding installation with a footprint that measures approximately 12 feet by 12 feet and is composed of 840 customized 3D printed blocks. The experimental pavilion represents a new paradigm in building construction methods.

A pattern derived from traditional Thai flower patterns is mapped onto the surface of the structure that creates a figural pattern and stunning visual effect of light, shade and shadow on the exterior and interior. From the exterior the pattern is most striking from a distance or when viewed through the screen of a digital camera, which creates a surprise upon photographing the structure from up close.

Each block is printed using a farm of 11 powder 3D printers with a special cement composite formulation comprised chiefly of iron oxide-free portland cement. Iron oxide imparts a gray color to cement, and its removal makes this print much lighter. Also, 3D printed cement requires no formwork and produces no waste and the support material can be reused to produce more blocks. Coupled with portland cement is an ecologically derived UV resistant polymer that

02 - Concept Research reduces the greenhouse gas emissions from production of resins by 50% over conventional petroleum based epoxies that uses plant-based materials that do not compete with food sources or displace food-based agriculture. Each 3D printed block is enumerated to designate the blocks position in the overall structure. Rather than a set of blueprints, a spreadsheet that demonstrated the position of a block, was used in constructing Bloom, and each block is assembled and held in place using stainless steel hardware. Each block has a printed structural grid that defines the interior of the tempietto and requires no additional structural support, functioning as a load-bearing 3D printed enclosure. The curvilinear shape gives added stiffness to the thin, lightweight structure, informed by the thin masonry structures of Uruguayan architect and engineer, Eladio Dieste, particularly Iglesia Cristo Obrero, Jefferson’s serpentine brick walls at the University of Virginia, and Torqued Elipse, by Richard Serra, which inspires its form.

In plan Bloom is a curved cruciform shape that rises 9 feet to meet the same shape rotated 45 degrees, creating a torqued “x” shape with an entrance 45 degrees off of the structures axis.

The undulated form and spaces recalls an elephants foot or, when coupled with the flower pattern on the surface, the traditional mud houses of the Tiebele people in Ghana — a reference to the earliest inspirations for 3D printing by emerging objects.

02 - Concept Research 2. GEOTUBE TOWER - DIACHRONIC GROWTH Project Date: 2009

By FAULDERS STUDIO GEOtube is a proposal for a new 170 meter tall sculptural tower for the city of Dubai. With an open structure and an exposed membrane skin, the vertical planes of the GEOtube tower are continually misted with local salt water via an external vascular water system. The result is a continual uniform growth of salt crystal deposits upon its vast and highly visible surfaces. GEOtube provides an identifiable architectural icon for the city, a specialized habitat for wildlife that thrives is this specialized environment, and an accessible skin for the harvesting of crystal salt.

Dubai is situated in one of the most unique natural environments on earth. The world’s highest salinity for oceanic sea waters are found in the adjacent Persian Gulf, as well as the Red Sea. Typical salt content for the world’s the oceans is 35 parts per thousand (35 o/oo). The Persian Gulf is approximately 40 parts per thousand (40.00 o/oo). This is due to high evaporation rates in the region from high temperatures and low fresh water influx. Dubai’s regional coastal plains, known as sabkahs, are geological formations of salt flats created by the presence of extreme temperature and humidity, combined with high water salinity. The extreme climate variations with thermal contraction at night and expansion during the day leads to polygonal surface cracking. Deposits of primarily halite, gypsum, and aragonite form some of the major subsurface hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Middle East.

GEOtube is a new kind of tower. Sprayed with adjacent Persion Gulf waters, its building skin is entirely grown rather than constructed; is in continual formation rather than fully completed; and is created locally rather than imported from afar. As the water evaporates and salt mineral deposits aggregate over time, the tower’s appearance transforms from a transparent veil to a vibrant white vertical plane. Becoming a new vertical natural habitat and harvesting surface, GEOtube extends Zabeel Park skyward, and broadcasts Dubai’s innovative integration with the natural environment globally. Salt crystals produce air saturated with healthy negative ions. In contrast, pollution produces large quantities of positive ions creating an unhealthy electrical imbalance in the air.

The concentration of negative ions is naturally higher around waterfalls and by the ocean; when water droplets are dispersed, an electrical charge is created. Research has proven the therapeutic values of salt caves and their positive influence in the treatment of respiratory diseases.

Salt water will be supplied to GEOtube Tower via a new 4.62 km buried pipeline. The incoming salt water will be distilled on site to increase saline levels and filtered prior to distribution onto the tower surfaces. As highly saturated saline seawater is lightly sprayed onto the skin mesh, the water evaporates with atmospherictemperatures ranging from24 degrees in winter to over 41 degrees Celsius in the summer. Aiding in the evaporation are the prevailing on-shore northwesterly winds

02 - Concept Research during the day (shamal), and the offshore southeasterly winds during the night. Regional rains are minimal, averaging approx. 80mm annually. When rains do arrive, they constructively aid in cleansing and washing away lose particles from the forming salt skin. Annual sandstorms (AlHaffar, Barih Thorayya, Al-Dabaran, etc.) similarly provide a constructive role in scrubbing down rough edges and lose particles. Besides natural forces, the salt skin requires minimal human maintenance, similar to the necessities of window washing for other large size buildings and structures. The effort will be to eliminate the growth of stalactites, as well as general tending to the smooth formation of the skin.

02 - Concept Research SALT DEPOSIT GROWTH For the GEOtube analysis, a prototype mesh surface is washed in a saline water solution and allowed to air dry. Through repeated washing and evaporation, a solid salt skin formation emerges. (mesh is not a scalar representation of the proposed full scale skin). Sodium chloride, also known as common salt, table salt, and halite, is a chemical compound with the formula NaCl. Sodium chloride is the compound most responsible for the salinity of the ocean and of the major extracellular material of many multicelled organisms. As the primary ingredient in edible salt, it is used as a food preservative and taste enhancer. Salt is currently mass-produced by evaporation of seawater or brinefrom other sources.

STRUCTURAL LATTICE A pattern design for the structural system is created by tracing the planar surface deformation generated by the large wind tube openings. The result is a highly redundant structural lattice comprised of two layers per wall (one layer is shown). The layers are interconnected with lateral structural bracing via the wind tubes. The structural lattice is made with steel tubes that vary in diameter relative to overall member length. These tubes are sheathed in fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) material to protect against salt corrosion.

02 - Concept Research SUSTAINABLE SYSTEM The open air salt water distillation pond is one meter deep & contains 17,000 cubic meters of water.

3 m diameter photovoltaic panels float upon the top surface of the pond via a custom pontoon system. Total PV surface area = 2,041 meters square. Photovoltaic pads are tethered to bottom of pond with enough slack to allow for random clustering. Panels are wired to the energy grid via tethered conduit.

The model’s modular components were fabricated by Emerging Objects for Faulders Studio using our unique Salt material, which is extremely translucent and conceptually consistent with the designer’s proposal.

02 - Concept Research Silk Pavilion

The Silk Pavilion explores the relationship between digital and biological fabrication on product and architectural scales. The primary structure was created of 26 polygonal panels made of silk threads laid down by a CNC (Computer-Numerically Controlled) machine. Inspired by the silkworm’s ability to generate a 3D cocoon out of a single multi-property silk thread (1km in length), the overall geometry of the pavilion was created using an algorithm that assigns a single continuous thread across patches providing various degrees of density. Overall density variation was informed by the silkworm itself deployed as a biological printer in the creation of a secondary structure. A swarm of 6,500 silkworms was positioned at the bottom rim of the scaffold spinning flat non-woven silk patches as they locally reinforced the gaps across CNC-dep osited silk fibers. Following their pupation stage the silkworms were removed. Resulting moths can produce 1.5 million eggs with the potential of constructing up to 250 additional pavilions. Affected by spatial and environmental conditions including geometrical density as well as variation in natural light and heat, the silkworms were found to migrate to darker and denser areas. Desired light effects informed variations in material organization across the surface area of the structure. A season-specific sun path diagram mapping solar trajectories in space dictated the location, size and density of apertures within the structure in order to lock-in rays of natural light entering the pavilion from South and East elevations.

The central oculus is located against the East elevation and may be used as a sun-clock. Parallel basic research explored the use of silkworms as entities that can “compute� material organization based on external performance criteria. Specifically, we explored the formation of non-woven fiber structures generated by the silkworms as a computational schema for determining shape and material optimization of fiber-based surface structures

Then I did some case study about how is the co-working art space performance on the market.

I visited two co working places which both located in Brooklyn , the one called craftsman ave is small community for artist and designers to share their skills and teaching people who wants to explore a new passion. They have good vibe and good equipment, but they have bad ventilation and limited space for retail and interaction.

Brooklyn Brush is a co working place for artist and designers which provide them private studio and gallery , Project Info meeting and pantry But each of the studio is completely isolated from each other, there is barely communication and interaction between each other. The entire space is lack of diversity which is not encouraging collaboration. I wonder how could I provide more opportunity to people whom are working in my space to be more collaborative and creative.

Gowanus has been a heavily industrial area,37 9capitalizing on proximity to the canal and 37STREET, 9 STREET,BROOKLYN BROOKLYN 28022sf 28022sf therefore transportation; large building housed clothes and food manufactures, coal storage, GOWANUS GOWANUS warehouse, and other industrial users. Much of the neighborhood remains zoned for manufacturing, but smaller and lighter “ micro� manufacturing has replaced some of the heavy manufacturing of the past. There are five major subway stations and a highway go across this area which made it easy to access. Artists have located in Gowanus to take advantage of large warehouse that have been divided into rehearsal and studio spaces, such as the Gowanus Arts Building and the former National Packing Box Factory. In 2009 US Environmental Protection Agency proposes Superfund designation for the canal which would bring more potential for creative industry. the various demographic factor offers many possibilities to the future development of this area. Four subway stations in this neighborhood which allowed people easy to access.

My site (which is the orange one) located in a small yard which already have some traditional crafts workshops ,this provide a good criteria for future collaboration. Currently it is a second hand furniture store which was build in 1965. Frame structure. Right side is 24 FT high and left side is 19ft high which next to Gowanus Loft -(number 7) its a gallery which would become a future collaboration.

The program purpose a co-working space for artist and designers to collaborate and provide them private studio, personal storage, design lab, retail and exhibition space as well as other service place like pantry and reception as community management. The open community co-working space provide all sorts of equipment which allow them to work together and have classes during other time schedule. There will be a small outdoor space as a sculpture garden behind this place to let artist and designers to show there big scale work as well as outdoor activities.

I did some material experiment with wax, the first one I melt wax into liquid and pour it into a box filled with ice cube which eventually left a negative space which produce different aperture , and the combination with metal mesh reflect the translucency of the material.

The hybrid with wood chips comes up a good acoustic function and a bit experience the sense of smell.

in the previous material experiment i was testing craft and hand based fabrication methods such as casting. In this experiment I was trying to combine digital design and fabrication technology with hand assembly.

As a hybrid condition i was exploring how this digital generated rule based “skeleton� could serve as the scaffolding to hold the previous more intuitive material experiment.

The design process start from the site analysis, I drew all the reference lines in my space including the grid line of column and the potential sunlight zoning boundary line.

Learning from my material study models i m trying to explore the polygon and the use of the oblique to generated a renewed organizational grid. I started to rotate one of the reference line 15 °, and then start to mirror them with grid line. The oblique lines create various size of polygon in my space which allow me to start to put program in the space. I put collaborative space in the middle and all the other private studio and other service space on both sides, which allow artist and designers have their own private creative work space in the meantime easy to come together to do collaborative work.

1. The LOOP serves as the connector of the micro-program in an elevated. A ribbon that ties all the activities together while serves as a display and circulation element. Using digitally generated, rule bases systems. The design language address different scales for different functions.

The small size would become display and storage and the medium size of the polygon could be used as furniture and the large size would become a threshold between public collaborative space to private studio space. The LOOP also could lead people tour around this entire space and view would change from indoor view to outdoor view, which give you a small peek of the sculpture garden.

This Studio Type provides two different private working space also allowed artists collaborate together to build there own partition based on their own crafts skills. This partition is the extension from one polygon under the loop. Some part of the partition could fold to become a furniture system.

I designed a new ceiling system which is trying to create a connection between the old structure to my new program. The size of the aperture on the ceiling is based on the program underneath it. Public space will get more sunlight come through and the private art studio will get less sunlight through the existing skylights and artificial light that will create more privacy and intimacy for the space.

Above public space the material of ceiling will be fabric which would create a brighter space the ceiling above private studios will be wood which allows artist to assembly future needs.
