LELA WREN GUNDERSON
My name is Lela Gunderson and I am a third year student in Florida State University’s Interior Design Program. I am passionate about designing spaces that serve to provide users with not only a space, but also an experience. I aspire to work for a firm whose projects are bold and experimental and push me to think creatively in ways where my growth as a designer does not end with my formal education.

EDUCATION STROZIER LIBRARY REDESIGN STUDIO II GROUP PROJECT with Cristina Fonfria + Brianna Salzenstein 1.5 MONTH TIME FRAME
Robert Manning Strozier library is located in the center of Florida State University’s campus. Intended to be a diversely unified space, the library addresses the needs of all users, present and future. Incorporating biophilic elements such as natural lighting and wood, alongside biomimicry, the space can offer enhanced learning comfort and retention rates for all students.
The design was created using an equal integration of ideas contributed by all group members. Utilizing our ideas, I drafted the floor plan in AutoCAD. Upon completing the final floor plan, Cristina created a SketchUp model to aid in the perspective drawings. All drawings shown were drawn and rendered solely by me using both hand rendering and Adobe Photoshop. Brianna produced additional renderings, none of which are shown.
The structure of the floor plan and elevations were created in AutoCAD. The perspectives were drafted by hand utilizing a perspective grid. All drawings were rendered by hand utilizing marker, colored pencil, and white gel pen, and enhanced with Adobe Photoshop.

Located in the charming, mountainous town of Breckenridge, Colorado is the accessible home of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, an elderly couple who although still active, require a home equipped to resolve their future needs as an aging couple. This aging in place design addresses the important issues of Universal Design, multigenerational needs, and the wellbeing of residents, all the while embodying the local character of the surrounding town.
The combination of warm, natural elements and cold, stark elements, come together in the space to provide visual contrast and a representational depiction of the surrounding area of Colorado.

STUDIO III GROUP PROJECT with Mckenzie Barco, Alexia Protopapadakis, + Juliana Griego 4 DAY TIME FRAME
Taking place in 2040, twelve scientists will be sent to Mars to establish an outpost in a shield volcano known as Arsia Mons. Following their progress, by 2080 a 100 person colony will be ready to house Earth’s elite. The affluent colonizers will be fully equipped by the design of the settlement to live an above average lifestyle on the red planet, which will allow them to live, work, and play on a level that exceeds their Earthly standards.

I A After receiving the charrette prompt, all group members collaborated to decide on the direction and desired style of the project, from which a retro futuristic style was chosen. Pieces of the project were divided to each group member to efficiently utilize the time given. All deliverables were compiled onto one final board using Adobe InDesign. The graphics displayed are some of the elements that I focused my time on. All graphics were created utilizing Adobe Illustrator.
This project enhanced my hand rendering skills, while stimulating quick, creative thinking through a brief design process. All drawings were produced and rendered by hand, utilizing a perspective grid, markers, colored pencil, and white gel pen. The architectural layout of the floor plan was provided to us.

RESIDENTIAL PARISIAN APARTMENT
GRAPHIC TECHNIQUES II INDIVIDUAL PROJECT 2 WEEK TIME FRAME
Located in Paris, France, this project focuses on the design of the major social areas of a flat owned by a young, successful couple. As desired, the historical Parisian architectural features are still present in the space among luxurious, modern furniture pieces. The space is meant to provide the couple with a lively space to host dinner parties and entertain their guests.
The seamless integration of historical Parisian architectural elements unified with urban modern furnishings create an eclectic and luxurious interior, providing the young couple with a space equipped to entertain guests.

This project is currently in between the pre-design and design phase. The end goal of the project is to create a workplace that balances technological precision with the freedom of creativity as inspired by the Sphero Bolt, one of the company’s robotic toys. These graphics were created in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign and were taken from my pre-design booklet.
