Designing a space that seeks to further provide the building’s stakeholders with an experience and sense of purpose has been a significant focus through my projects the past four years. I aspire to work on projects that challenge me to continuously evolve and grow, allowing me to experiment with designs that highlight how polychromatic colors, undulating forms, and sustainable practices can guide an experience, as well as impact the user’s emotional state. Each individual project delves into redefining the relationship between the built environment and the user through methodically researched, bold design choices that can positively impact all users of the space.

Bijoux Flagship Store Studio III 3 Week Time Frame 3,547 sq.ft.

503 Broadway, New York, NY 10012 Bijoux is a high-end jewelry store located in Soho, one of New York City’s prime shopping districts. The store focuses on the incorporation of experiential elements and user inclusion throughout the entirety of the space. A polychromatic color scheme and curvilinear lines aid in guiding users through the space, while creative solutions build product and brand loyalty. High-end retail has commonly been centered around the concept of exclusivity, providing the top 1% of the population with an experience and products that are unobtainable to the general public. As time has progressed, the evolving millennial generation demands more inclusiveness in the high-end retail shopping experience. Seeking to transform the shopping experience to meet these demands, the design of Bijoux welcomes all users into the space through an individualized experience, regardless of purchase intent. All the while, the store will still maintain a sense of extravagance and beauty in congruence with the jewelry pieces on display. A variety of display arrangements will allow for the accessibility of all user groups, while clear product zoning will provide a seamless experience. Instagrammable features, lounge areas, and warm tones will draw users into the space and additionally urge them to relax throughout the duration of their experience. Furthermore, pattern and curvilinear lines are elements that visually help humans to relax, which will be featured, producing a congenial, calm experience. This will be juxtaposed by stimulating colors and bold prints that will still enliven customers and employees of Bijoux alike.

User Experience

Users of the space will enter and be presented with a variety of unique spatial experiences to choose from.

A polychromatic lounge nook will provide users with an allocated area to relax and rejuvenate while in the space.

Users will gravitate towards this display area as it is captivating with a variety of display options and natural lighting.

A central point for checkout and customer service will allow for user security. A private back of house will provide employees with a quiet space of refuge. Easily accessible pathways in the space will aid in user navigation and the comfort of all users.

Workplace 02 Sphero Corporate Office Studio III 3 Month Time Frame 12,504 sq.ft.

942 North 1st Street, St. Louis, MO 63102 Situated in St. Louis, Missouri, Sphero’s newest office will be located on a section of the fourth and fifth floor of a renovated building overlooking the Mississippi River. Sphero is an American company that specializes in the creation of robotic toys. The company is a leading example of a manufacturer that enhances education through its products which include programmable robots and STEAM-based educational toys. Sphero’s office will stimulate wonder and creativity, which will then be streamlined into their ideas and products. The office layout will provide employees with varying environments to work from, considering the differing needs of introverts and extroverts to create an office that will promote comfort and productivity. Office design has seen a significant change in recent years as it has been adapted to meet the needs of a more collaborative and social workplace differing from the cubicle centered offices that have been prevalent since the 1960s. These re-imagined workplace environments have been proven to increase worker productivity, enhance collaboration, strengthen relationships among employees, decrease employee absences, and encourage more innovation while stimulating better learning and faster decision making. Despite the significant amount of benefits in this shift towards a collaborative work environment, not all individuals thrive working in a collaborative setting. Statistics show that one out of three people are introverted, embracing solitude rather than social environments. Special considerations must be made for these individuals in order for them to feel comfortable and to work efficiently in these new workplace environments.

Healthcare 03 Chicago 77 Clinic Studio IV 3 Month Time Frame 5,900 sq.ft.

875 N Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611 Chicago 77 Clinic is a primary care clinic focused on preventative care, seeing patients by appointment only. The clinic itself is located inside an existing hospital building on the 14th floor in Chicago, Illinois. The building, formerly known as the John Hancock Building, is located in the Magnificent Mile district overlooking Lake Michigan to the east. The city of Chicago is comprised of 77 different community areas that make up the nine districts. Each of the community areas are strictly defined creating a sense of separation and division throughout the city. To evoke a welcoming atmosphere and celebrate the city’s unique differences, Chicago 77 Clinic will integrate elements from each of the community areas into one cohesive space for all patients to feel welcome while in the space. A vibrant color scheme additionally will allow all users to feel invited and reassured upon entering. Environmental graphics will be inspired by prominent forms found in art created by local artists. Pulling from familiar elements will aid in helping the users of the space to feel at ease. The use of partition walls and frosted glass will avoid unnecessary division and provide users with enhanced sight lines to aid in space navigation and provide a sense of connection while in the clinic without sacrificing privacy. Additionally, the space will incorporate findings from the Person-Environment Theory to provide the users of the clinic with a connection to the physical space, as well as to the other individuals in the space through the cohesion of elements found throughout the 77 community areas that make up Chicago.

Floor Plan and Considerations | NTS Micro Considerations: Upon entering the space, patients will feel welcomed and reassured through a lively, vibrant color scheme.

12

Environmental graphics will be inspired by murals and art created by local artists found throughout the different community areas of Chicago. Pulling from familiar elements will aid in helping the users of the space to feel at ease.

13

11

Macro Considerations: The exam rooms embrace the fact that all patients have different needs, providing a variety of exam room types. Creating a separate hallway for the healthcare providers allows these workers increased efficiency in their arrival to the exam rooms and staff lounge. This efficient route additionally ensures healthcare providers with increased privacy. Due to the high demanding role of a healthcare provider’s job, a relaxing staff lounge with varying options for individual and group soft seating will allow these workers to relax and re-energize. Choice in seating allows the users of the space to pick a seating option that is in congruence with their needs, whether that be individual, group, or work seating.

Social Sustainability 04 The Women and Children’s Advocacy Center Group Project with Parker Heitzmann & Cristina Fonfria Studio IV 3 Week Time Frame 42,682 sq.ft.

1625 Apalachee Parkway, Tallahassee, FL 32301 As a result of electronic commerce, retail spaces are becoming vacant, which poses the question as to what can be created out of these empty spaces. Located in Tallahassee, Florida, The Women and Children’s Advocacy Center, housed in a renovated Toys-R-Us building, will serve as a refuge for women and children survivors of abuse. Through the space, the women and children will be able to find safety together in an environment that promotes autonomy, similar to butterflies in their cocoons. With this in mind, the evolution of Tallahassee’s Cloudless Sulphur butterfly drives the concept of Embracing Metamorphosis, symbolizing the prosperous and nurturing community women can finally attain after enduring hardships and abuse. Utilizing organic, contemporary architecture and biomimicry to blur the line between interior and exterior spaces, a stimulating and inviting environment will be created through natural light and biophilic design elements. The use of repetition and motifs throughout the space to create rhythm will symbolize the movement of the butterflies as they migrate from North America to Argentina. The curvilinearity of their figures will be interpreted into the space through architectural features. These species of butterflies experience different stages of development throughout their lives until reaching their final phase of transformation and growth, which can be seen as a direct parallel to the experience of survivors of abuse, through their arrival at a safe place where they can finally flourish and build community. The center will aid in the creation of a transformed lifestyle through resources and the bonds of community.

Girls between the ages of six to seventeen tend to show a preference for warm toned colors, whereas boys prefer cool toned colors. A complementary color scheme will be utilized throughout the space to incorporate a cohesion of both warm and cool toned colors. Both pink and green tones have been linked to reduced anxiety levels and also provide users with a feeling of relief when present in a space. Green additionally is reminiscent of nature and symbolizes hope.

Modern Feminist Standpoint Theory Modern Feminist Standpoint Theory 5 Tenets

Situated-Knowledge Methodological

“Scientific research ought to proceed by studying from the margins out, so as to understand how existing power structures shape and limit knowledge production, as well as phenomena under investigation.”

“Social location systematically influences our experiences, shaping and limiting what we know, such that knowledge is contextually generated from a standpoint or an epistemic community that achieves a critical group consciousness through a process of transformative criticism governed by shared standards of evaluation.”

Normative Commitment

Empirical Adequacy “Achievement of a standpoint requires that participants share a commitment to empirical adequacy but that how this is understood is contextually determined by the other cognitive aims that constitute a context of inquiry.”

Lounge Area Vignette

Epistemic Advantage

“Inquiry that achieves a feminist standpoint is epistemically advantaged.”

“Achievement of feminist standpoint requires a commitment to challenge, rather than reinforce, systems of oppression in order to arrive at a group consciousness of how power structures and influences the world .”

Education 05 Strozier Library Redesign

Group Project with Cristina Fonfria & Brianna Salzenstein Studio II 1.5 Month Time Frame 18,970 sq.ft.

116 Honors Way, Tallahassee, FL 32306 Robert Manning Strozier library is located in the center of Florida State University’s campus in Tallahassee, Florida. Intended to be a diversely unified space, the library addresses the needs of all users, present and future. Incorporating biophilic elements such as natural light and materials, alongside biomimicry, the space can offer enhanced learning comfort and retention rates for all students. The library celebrates the unity of different individuals coming together within one space, as well as the many different learning styles that will similarly be present in the space at all times. The students will be provided with an engaging space that integrates all different methods of learning while also providing customization and user comfort. The different zones in the space will be separated into areas following Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory, which will divide the space into two distinct areas: individual and group work areas, and further subdivide them based on the four learning styles: diverging, assimilating, converging, and accommodating. “Diverging” individuals learn through visual elements, which will result in the inclusion of screens throughout the library. “Assimilating” individuals have enhanced learning experiences when analytical concepts are present, therefore private reading nooks will be featured in the space. “Converging” individuals learn best through conversation with others, resulting in the inclusion of group seating configurations. “Accommodating” individuals utilize problem-solving when learning, which will result in the presence of interactive screens in the space. Subsequently, all students in the library will be accounted for, creating an atmosphere of capability through intellectual growth.

Group Project with Mckenzie Barco, Alexia Protopapadakis, & Juliana Griego Studio III 4 Day Time Frame

Arsia Mons Taking place in 2040, twelve scientists will be sent to Mars to establish an outpost in a shield volcano known as Arsia Mons. Following their progress, by 2080, a 100 person colony will be ready to house Earth’s elite. The affluent colonizers will be fully equipped by the design of the settlement to live a luxurious lifestyle on the red planet, which will allow them to live, work, and entertain on a level that exceeds their Earthly standards. The Astral Abodes feature a central, remote-controlled cylinder which is separated into three rotating components consisting of a multi-use workstation, bedroom, and bathroom. The abodes are constructed from local sands and use architectural forms reminiscent of plants to provide a hint at biophilic design in space. The Stellar Skyscraper offers amenities for the residents to enjoy including, shopping, exercising, fine dining, and dancing. The colony is encased with a glass dome protecting residents from radiation and creating a seal to encase the inhabitants’ oxygen supply. The rooftop hydro garden enables the production of food using hydroponic and fish-farming technologies with water sourced from newly discovered underground lakes. This re-imagined lifestyle will provide the colonists with all of Earth’s necessities, in addition to the new thrill of everyday life resulting from inhabiting Mars.
