elcome to the fifth annual Tableware International Awards of Excellence honouring some of the most considerate design, thoughtful execution and forthright thinking the industry has to offer. Unfortunately, this is the second year where we are unable to host a live awards ceremony at Ambiente and while we are bitterly disappointed, we remain thankful that these – somewhat dampened – awards still take place. All we can say is… 2023 is going to be a great party! The Tableware International Awards of Excellence were founded five years ago because we felt the great innovators of this industry were not being honoured appropriately, and we are very proud to be caretakers of the accolade. Participation is a mark of respect for the industry and respect is something we have in abundance for the global family of companies who exist cohesively within the business. We have been very honoured at both the quantity and quality of entries this year, despite a global pandemic doing its very best to throw us off course! This year we have 15 different categories, which have been judged by an acclaimed group of retailers, designers and distributors who know the industry inside out.

This year’s awards include fine dinnerware, casual dinnerware, serveware, barware, flatware-cutlery, fine glassware, casual glassware, decorative, coffee and teaware, metals, hospitality dinnerware, hospitality glassware and a new (and very well received) category this year, innovation. Not forgetting our new Designer of the Year award and Lifetime Achievement award winners who will be announced in the next issue of the magazine. We’ve had an incredible array of entries from the likes of Portmeirion, Nikko, Noritake, Rosenthal, LSA International, Hering Berlin, Porcel, Stelton, Nude Glassware, WMF and many more. Over the following pages, you’ll see our full list of finalists – the top three in each category has been selected by our panel of judges and instead of a gala awards ceremony… we will announce the winners in our next magazine, not quite as much fun but we will make up for it in 2023, we promise! Finally, thank you for supporting the fifth iteration of the Tableware International Awards of Excellence, we look forward to hearing your thoughts on the deserving finalists!

AND THE FINALISTS ARE… Hering Berlin

Evolution

www.heringberlin.com

“Stefanie Hering never fails to astonish with the tableware innovations she creates. The shapes and glazes she introduces conjure a bridge between fine dining, everyday casual, and service for gourmet food presentations.”

Stefanie Hering has so far designed a total of four porcelain objects, each in white and with four glaze colours, in this unusual form and décor. In addition to the coupe plate, there is a shallow bowl in which the ribbed structure extends right up to the rim of the vessel, a bowl with a plastically shaped exterior that feels like a hand caress and a small bowl in the shape of a biomorphic oval. The decision for this completely new approach to service design was inspired by three-star chef Christian Jürgens, with whom Hering has worked closely for many years. Jürgens asked the table culture expert for a coupe plate with a larger inner surface. A challenge because, as the designer and trained master ceramist explains, “it would be too simple to just enlarge the inner surface or make the whole plate bigger. Such an object needs its own line.” The result is nothing less than a reinvention of the plate: instead of a rounding that merges with an edge into the edge of the plate, Hering modelled this transition zone with narrower and wider depressions reminiscent of petals. It took a year of product development before this basic idea was condensed into a feasible design concept that could only be realised through pure manual craftsmanship. 18 TABLEWARE INTERNATIONAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE 2022

FINE DINNERWARE Porcel S.A

Maris d’Or

www.porcel.com Maris d’Or is a beautiful new shape designed by Porcel with the wish of bringing to the table an original contour and an elegant golden outline. The name of this new collection comes from the Latin Maris - “of the sea” - due to the gentle inspiration of ocean elements. The wavy curves around each piece resemble soft movements of the waves, as well as the imprints its gentle swing leaves on the sand. The three pieces that comprise Maris d’Or are adorned with a hand painted gold rim that lines their undulating edges resulting in a dazzling effect. The shimmer of this gold finish enhances the porcelain and the detailed texture, alluding to the reflection of sunbeam on sea waves. Maris d’Or brings a dynamic element to the table, complemented by an exceptional look and unique tactile experience.

“Applause to Porcel for creating their stunning new dinnerware shape.”

Pip Studio Heritage Collection www.pipstudio.com

“The perfect "east meets west" thank you for letting us travel into your world.” Since 2007, Pip has taken her fans on an incredible journey, always looking for new stories and inspirations. Pip is sold in no less than 40 countries and at most major department stores. The Heritage collection pays homage to Pip’s parents and to the colourful stories of their lives. In this collection their two worlds come together. Pip’s mother grew up in Indonesia, where her father, Pip’s grandpa, was the head of the local post office. The memories from those Indonesian years gave her lots of inspiration. You will find magnificent landscapes with palm trees, exotic butterflies and the endless turquoise ocean. Meanwhile, Pip’s father grew up in the Southwest coast of the Netherlands, also known as Zeeland. This is also the place where Pip’s parents first met and fell in love. Typical for this region are the traditional costumes with their beautiful textiles with handcrafted details, such as the special golden brooch. The longer you look at this carefully designed Heritage collection, the more stories you will discover and the more you learn about the heritage of Pip’s family.

DECORATIVE Heinen Delfts Blauw B.V

Crazy stack tulipiere www.heinendelftsblauw.com The tulip vase is the most iconic piece of Delft blue porcelain there is. Hundreds of years ago the Dutch William of Orange married Queen Mary the 2nd. She loved to fill her castles with flowers and asked the Dutch potteries to make her some stunning tulip vases. The tulip vase became a popular decorative vase, but after her death in 1694 these remarkable vases were forgotten. Until now. Heinen Delfts Blauw brought back the tulip vase and gave it a transformation. The essence of the iconic tulipieres is still the same, but they have been given a playful and modern twist. The evolved tulip vases still have their recognizable spouts and are made according to the old crafts, just like the Delft potteries did for Queen Mary. The hand-painted elements are made by the master painter in The Netherlands.

COFFEE / TEAWARE Glashütte Valentin Eisch GmbH

UNIK Espresso eisch.de

“Elegant and unique product, combining simple design with a uniqueness that only excellent craftsmanship can deliver.”

48 TABLEWARE INTERNATIONAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE 2022

As a traditional glass brand, family-run since 1946, EISCH Germany stands for the design of glass as a creative element of tableware at the highest level. Together with her cousin Eberhard Eisch, the designer Julia Eisch is the third generation to run the glassworks. Julia Eisch was looking for a vessel for coffee enjoyment that has as many parallels as possible to fine and sophisticated espresso in terms of production and appearance. Thanks to the long tradition of the Eisch family in the glass trade, familiar with the sensitivity of glass as a material, similarities were quickly found in the properties of coffee and glass. Each Eisch Unik espresso glass is freely formed by hand in front of an open flame from heat-resistant glass, which makes it unique and individual. Due to the organic shape, the glass lies very comfortably in the hand. The gold painters at Glashütte Eisch refine the glasses with 24-carat gold or platinum, which gives the glasses a singular value that makes espresso enjoyment a very special sensory experience. The hazelnut brown crema of the espresso is reflected in the shiny gold inside the glass. Deviations in shape due to the respective handwriting of the glassblower are characteristics of Unik and give the glasses their special beauty. The saucer is finished by hand in a black stone look.

INNOVATION

Innovative tableware from all categories that demonstrate something new

AND THE FINALISTS ARE…

Xavier China

Kelling Collection www.xavierchina.com

The Kelling Collection is Xavier China’s latest collection of bone china tableware, developed in collaboration with British interior designer Kelling Designs. Each piece is handcrafted in Stoke-on-Trent using traditional methods. Instead of traditional gold, platinum or silver banding, we have created a designed based on 6 complementary colours where a full colour border is banded in a contrast colour, inspired by contrast piping on upholstery. The aim was to create a range that is not only visually striking but also truly practical for dishwashers, microwaves and daily use. Bone china has been tucked away in the ‘special occasion’ cupboard for too long. The minimum 50% bone ash content in the pieces means that is brilliantly chip resistant as well as beautiful, and so they created a design that will take busy households from breakfast to banquets all via the dishwasher! Both the main colour and the banding colour is silk screen printed before the banding colour is over painted by hand in the same shade to provide a rolled edge and hand-finish. This means that each piece is fired four times and is truly handmade. Despite this they have kept the range affordable and accessible for those who want stylish tableware without breaking the bank. There are six colour schemes, which can be bought individually, in sets of 2 or 3, or mixed to create a fabulous rainbow table.

“Xavier China successfully blends old world Stoke-on-Trent craftsmanship with functional bold coloured everyday fine bone china with Kelling. Fun, easy to live with microwave and dishwasher safe pieces makes it easy to turn up the volume on every meal. Great easy to mix & match colour pieces.”

HOSPITALITY GLASSWARE

Nude Glassware

Ghost Zero

www.nudeglassware.com The Ghost Zero collection is NUDE’s lightest stemware to date, comprising two unique designs: Tulip and Belly. Defined by its statuesque silhouette, Ghost Zero Tulip is expertly shaped to intensify aromas and notes through its curvaceous bowl and narrow rim. Its tapered form directs wine towards the tip of the tongue, balancing out the grapes natural acidity and enhancing the sensory experience. It’s available in red, white, champagne and tumbler styles to offer a holistic drinking experience. Ghost Zero Belly challenges conventions with its gently bulbous body and tapered rim resting atop a tall, slender stem. Its voluptuous design aerates the contents of the glass, amplifying the wine’s natural flavour. Carefully hand-crafted by skilled artisans, the design achieves a deceptively simple yet sophisticated style, available in red, white and tumbler designs.

“Beautiful shape and style.”

HOSPITALITY GLASSWARE Utopia Tableware Ltd

Hayworth

www.utopia-tableware.com The hand-blown Hayworth glasses are designed with retro vintage good looks but robust enough to cope with the demands of busy bars and nightclubs, and are glasswasher safe. The range includes stemless gin, coupe, martini, stemmed cocktail and flute glasses. The classic martini deep 8oz (23cl) coupe is the heart of this vintage glassware revival range. Float a cherry on the top of a chic dry martini on ice and the drinker is transported back to the Hollywood glamour of previous eras. There is a shallower but wider 10.5oz (30cl) model for different presentations. The Hayworth stemless gin class combines a rounded shape with a classic tumbler to create a well-balanced glass perfect for the fashionable drinks market. With a capacity of 22oz (65cl) it is ideal for a luxury G and T or other premium drink. The rounded shape allows the botanicals and garnishes to blend together, with room for plenty of slow-melting ice. For the ultimate in sophistication there is a gold rimmed version.

“A well-priced retro style design, tactile and comfortable.”
