W

hat a marvellous honour it was for Tableware International to host our third annual Awards of Excellence at Ambiente 2020. Eighteen categories and a Lifetime Achievement Award winner were announced on Sunday 9 February at an awards ceremony held in Ambiente’s Hall 4.2. Following drinks and canapes, the awards opened with an introduction from Malcolm Naish, founder of Lema Publishing which publishes Tableware International. Roundly praising the tableware industry, Malcolm highlighted the importance of hosting an award ceremony judged by industry peers. He was followed by Ambiente’s vice

president Nicolette Naumann. It is hugely important to Tableware International, which has been published continuously for more than 140 years, to host an awards ceremony such as this. This is a wonderful, multifaceted industry – creative and global. From bespoke collections to mass produced pieces, each aspect deserves to be recognised. We would like to thank each and every person and company who entered the awards, the judges who so graciously gave their time and Ambietne who continue to graciously support the awards. See you next year!

Paul Yeomans, Tableware International with Caroline Yang, Interior Lifestyle China, Stefanie Hering, Hering Berlin and Mairead Wilmot, Tableware International

"Innovative design is adventurous – and never a sure thing. Experimenting and pushing the boundaries of what is possible – that is my understanding of truly new, future-oriented design. So I feel more than honoured and thankful to win the Tableware International Award 2020 for my collection PalmHouse X. Here, I took the risk of working with x-rays to develop my decors on handcrafted porcelain. So, the award for me is both confirmation and incentive. Thank you." Stefanie Hering, designer Hering Berlin and creator of PalmHouse X

16 TABLEWARE INTERNATIONAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE 2020

PalmHouse X is designer Stefanie Hering’s latest decor series on both bisque and glazed porcelain, handcrafted in the Hering Berlin masterworkshops at Porzellan Manufaktur Reichenbach, Germany. With PalmHouse X, the designer is presenting a unique reinterpretation of a classic of porcelain culture: using a sophisticated process, she has translated floral motifs into a decoration that is abstractly avantgarde as it is sensual. The result of Stefanie Hering’s years of experimentation is based on X-ray images of orchids and adds a new dimension to the characteristic selection of decorations from Hering Berlin. Furthermore she has added a completely new, innovative interpretation to the wide range of traditional floral decorations worldwide. PalmHouse X is aimed at anyone who loves the decorative, aesthetics, and colours – while still having an eye for the essence of the things that PalmHouse X reflects in its strikingly reduced forms. The development of the dyes used for this decoration is the result of extensive experiments of a kind only possible in a manufactory like Hering Berlin, where both the designers and the artisans implementing the designs have decades of experience with porcelain and all related processes. The colours used in PalmHouse X have both the luminosity and transparency of watercolours, but were specially developed by Stefanie Hering for decorating unglazed bisque porcelain. During the firing process, they are fused with the porcelain mass so that they will not lose their luminosity even in the dishwasher.

Botanic Garden Harmony www.portmeirion.co.uk

Inspired by striking iconic Botanic Garden motifs, originally designed by Susan Williams-Ellis, this new Botanic Garden Harmony collection brings a retro look with a modern twist to everyday moments. Featuring embossed detailing, the semi-transparant glazes used on the pieces, in five elegant colours, highlight the detail beautifully. Serveware

Riedel was the winner in the Serveware Category with its Amadeo Performance Decanter. Riedel

Amadeo Performance Decanter www.riedel.com

Paul Yeomans and Mairead Wilmot of Tableware International with Stephen McGraw, MD, Riedel UK and Ireland, center

Glassware innovator, Riedel, has unveiled Performance Amadeo, an iconic decanter designed to complete the Austrian-based companies Performance Range, launched in 2017. Riedel has been reiterating the importance of decanting all wines, whether red, white, young or old, as well as champagne. Ever since it was introduced to the market in 2006, the Amadeo decanter has been one of the icons of Riedel’s decanter collections. Like other icons, Amadeo has undergone several reinterpretations while always keeping its typical lyre-shaped design. These include the double magnum rainbow version for the Elton John AIDS Foundation (2017), both with and without colour, or as part of the Riedel Mini limited edition also launched this year. In 2019, the award-winning Performance glass series was complemented by the Amadeo decanter – optically manufactured, in a magnum version, and with a line in the signature green colour of the Performance series. The decanter is an absolute must have for design and wine lovers. Not only does this piece have a unique look and feel, but it is also unique in its function. These mouth-blown, handmade decanters are produced at the Riedel factory in Kufstein.

“We are absolutely thrilled to win two of Tableware International’s Awards of Excellence for 2020. It’s incredibly important that the industry has these awards in place, which recognise and celebrate excellence and innovation. As a company which is constantly striving for exactly those attributes in our products and designs, it’s great to know that we have the support of so many esteemed industry figureheads, who go to make the judging panel. We’ll be raising our glasses in celebration – that’s for sure!” Stephen McGraw, managing director, Riedel

"Winning the Tableware International Award was a wonderful surprise and we are absolutely delighted. It’s a real honour for our small business to win such a prestigious award and to have that recognition amongst these great companies internationally and from across the tableware industry. It was also a great pleasure to be at the awards evening which was both fun and a great opportunity to network and to meet others in the industry from around the globe." Melanie Roseveare, Melody Rose

24 TABLEWARE INTERNATIONAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE 2020

In March 2019 Melody Rose, was approached by the Sir John Soane’s Museum to create a range of fine china for the museum shop to coincide with their exhibition Hogarth: Place and Progress, opening October 2019. Inspired by William Hogarth’s The Rake’s Progress, the series of eight paintings created in 1734 tell the story of Tom Rakewell, a young man who follows a path of vice and self destruction after inheriting a fortune from his miserly father, finally ending up deranged and penniless in Bedlam, after his failure to establish himself in society. To coincide with the October 2019 exhibition Hogarth: Place and Progress, The Sir John Soane’s Museum approached Melody Rose to collaborate on a range of tableware. For the project Melody Rose was given access to the imagery of the eight paintings that make up William Hogarth’s (in)famous paintings 'A Rake’s Progress’. Four of the eight paintings were selected for the project, where the story plays out across handcrafted fine bone china medium sized plates (22.5cm) and a teacup and saucer all finished with a luxurious and durable 22kt burnished gold. The collection includes four medium sized 23cm plates and an elegant teacup and saucer. The teacup features a suitably surreal deconstruction of painting III in the series with an image inside the teacup and on the saucer as an extra element. The cups and medium plates can be bought individually to suit modern lifestyles and international visitors buying gifts and mementos. The plates can also be decoratively displayed on a wall or open shelving. Paul Yeomans and Mairead Wilmot of Tableware International pictured with Melanie Roseveare of Melody Rose, center.

African Safari Collection

www.artelglass.com Designed by Věra Mauricová, this collection of mouth-blown lead-free glass is inspired by African Safari Animals plus juxtaposing production techniques such as hand-engraving and geometric sand-blasting inspired by traditional Czech cut crystal. The African Safari collection evokes the safari experience for adventurers and armchair travellers alike with ten different exotic animal head motifs that are available either individually or as a set of Double Old Fashioned glasses (sets include one glass with each design): baboon, elephant, giraffe, hippo, jaguar, lion, rhino, vulture, wildebeest and zebra. The collection is especially noteworthy for its unique juxtaposition of aesthetic approaches and production techniques. Each trophy head is handengraved in breathtakingly lifelike detail, yet also features a bold series of sandblasted geometric shapes that echo the prismatic appearance of traditional Czech cut crystal. The resulting contrast between the engraved and sandblasted portions creates a truly unique look that is unlike anything else on the market and simply perfect for hunting lodges, al fresco dining, or casual entertaining.

Decorative

Stelton was the winner in the Decorative Category with Stockholm Lignum. Stelton

Stockholm Lignum www.stelton.com Inspired by nature, the collaboration between Stelton and the Swedish designers Bernadotte & Kylberg continues – this time with a new interpretation of the Stockholm collection. The artistic collection is based on the designers’ love of the Stockholm archipelago. With Stockholm Lignum, Bernadotte & Kylberg focus on the landscape and the colours surrounding the picturesque archipelago. The region’s vegetation and beautiful hues of brown, red, green and blue inspired the new, artistic pattern and the series is thus called Lignum, which means “wood” in Latin. The series consists of three vases and three bowls of various sizes. The Stockholm Lignum collection is made of aluminium with cold enamel, which gives the collection its exclusive expression and highlights the quality. The beautiful pattern is made by hand and makes both the vases and bowls into unique works of art that are beautiful by themselves in simple and minimalist décor or in a cluster of different sizes for a more dramatic expression. The bowls can be used for fruit, salad or other cold snacks. The products’ high quality and timeless shapes make them perfect gifts.

“We are very pleased to receive the Tableware International award for the Stockholm Lignum collection and glad to share the honour with the Swedish designers Bernadotte & Kyhlberg. The award will certainly bring even more attention to “Lignum” which is already very popular as a decorative and sculptural collection that brings nature into your home.” Mette Stagsted Larsen, marketing director, Stelton

Giftable Tableware

Riedel was the winner in the Giftable Tableware Category with Mini Decanters. Riedel

Mini Decanters www.riedel.com Glassware innovator, Riedel, has launched six limited-edition mouthblown Mini Decanters, inspired by the company’s best-selling handmade decanters produced in Kufstein. These include the Mini Curly Pink, Mini Cornetto, Mini Amadeo, Mini Horn, Mini Mamba, Mini Ayam Decanters. Designed to hold half a bottle of wine, the Riedel Mini Decanters have been developed personally by Maximilian Riedel, 11th generation CEO of the luxury glassware specialist based in Austria. For years, Maximilian and his family have recognised the importance of decanting for all wines, whether red or white, young or aged, and even champagne. Riedel’s Mini Decanters have a statement ‘wow’ factor due to their unique and distinctive design as well as being perfect for those who love wine, but don’t want to drink copious amounts of it at a time. The mini versions of these decanters were first introduced at HIDE, the Michelinstarred restaurant on Piccadilly, London where Ollie Dabbous is head chef. All of Riedel’s decanters are handmade in their factory in Kufstein, Austria, a testament to the skill of Riedel glassblowers. The introduction of this half-sized Mini Decanter range offers a wonderful alternative to traditional sizes designed for larger bottles. The size is perfect to drink one bottle of wine in two sittings for a perfectly decanted wine each time, and is also ideal for those with less storage.

Coffee / Teaware

WMF was the winner in the Coffee/Teaware Category with its Motion Vacuum Flask. WMF Group GmbH

Motion Vacuum Flask www.wmf.com

This vacuum flask series merges minimalism with functionality. The flasks feature a smooth, polished Cromargan 18/10 stainless steel metal surface, which, in some models, is coated with durable resin. The timeless design reflects the WMF brands highest quality standards and was created by the WMF Design Team. With an increasing part of the population spending more time on their daily commute, insulation products have made a strong comeback, now also becoming accessory items that have to deliver a high level of design quality. As part of the Motion line, the WMF Motion vacuum flasks are based on the line’s approach of outstanding functionality in a minimalistic shape. Only metal is visible while the double-walled stainless cup and a seamless body are part of a concept that seeks to eliminate all potential “dirt traps”. The clip-on cup, a push-to-open stopper and a spout that allows pouring in any direction deliver on the idea that a simple object should be easy to interact with – and that’s why the flask can go in the dishwasher, too. The trademark Motion thumb mold ensures secure holding even when wearing gloves and the flask can take a drop on concrete without losing its insulating properties – both relevant features, even for the urban dweller.

Paul Yeomans, Tableware International, Lucy Hotston, Zuchex, Ingola Metz, WMF and Mairead Wilmot, Tableware International

“This award at the Tableware International Awards of Excellence 2020 once again confirms WMF’s own claim of combining excellent design with perfect functionality. What’s more, the WMF Motion thermal flasks stylishly represent the extension of our strategic portfolio over the last few years in the area of sustainability and to go. That’s why we’re particularly pleased that this form of sustainable drinking pleasure has been honoured with an award by an international jury of experts.” Martin Ludwig, senior vice president strategy & product creation, WMF Group 36 TABLEWARE INTERNATIONAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE 2020

The Moka in itself deserves to be recognised as it left a mark on Italian society and culture, having opened up areas of affluent society and making it a universal ritual of daily life which can still be felt today. It is this aspect that encouraged the new, affordable price – from £25 - of Chipperfield’s Moka.

Alessi's representative (second right) is presented with their award by Paul Yeomans, Tableware International, Emma Smith of NY Now (second left) and Mairead Wilmot, Tableware International

Architect David Chipperfield created a fresh re-design. In his own words, the re-design was to “only make it more of what it already is”. Thus, the Moka retains its character, friendly silhouette and soft aluminium materiality.

"Alessi is honoured to be recognised at the 2020 Tableware International awards. Alessi's mission is to research the most advanced cultural, aesthetic, executive and functional quality and translate this into mass produced items. One of its main characteristics is its ability to combine the typical needs of a modern business with being a research laboratory in the field of the applied arts, striking a fine balance between the most advanced international creativity and the desires of the public; it is our daily practice . It is a hard and, at the same time, beautiful work and so, we greatly appreciate when important recognition as this award celebrates our creativity in form, function and innovation." Artisanal

Herend Porcelain Manufactory Ltd was the winner in the Artisinal Category with Turtle of Eternity. Herend Porcelain Manufactory Ltd

Turtle of Eternity www.herend.com

The Turtle of Eternity was created by designer Erika Éles-Varga with Herend explaining its creation required a record number of working hours of design, preparation, gypsum and of course, expert hands. The gigantic porcelain masterpiece is a real tour-de-force of innovation, its creation almost reached the technological limits of manufactural porcelain production. The designer created this pattern because she felt it was important to connect the terrestrial sphere (turtle) and the celestial sphere (cranes). She had a dream, and dreams in Herend often have a way of coming to life – in this case in the shape of an exclusive, giant dragon turtle with phenomenal decoration. The dragon-headed turtle is a symbol with multiple meanings. Dragons symbolise strength and good luck, and turtles represent long life, wisdom and security with its armor. Its specialty is that while the figurine is bound to the terrestrial sphere, its decoration is connected to the air since it portrays the crane as its main motif. The crane is associated with luck, good blessing and the fulfilment of one’s desires. Cranes can also be connected with family values, and honour, loyalty and peace. The turtle’s strong shell means protection and support for earth, which is originated from the gods. “We are delighted and proud to announce that our large dragon turtle figure of exclusive design has won a Tableware International Award of Excellence 2020! The winning masterpiece dragon turtle is a traditional Chinese symbol. This bravura piece made in one original symbolizes, among other things, growth, endurance, perseverance and patience. Its decoration is special; the carp on its armour is a basic element of feng shui. In the cartouches on the side of the armour, the golden motif symbolizes water, which is an elemental primordial force that is fundamental to all life. Next to it is a stylized flower decor. In feng shui, flowers are very important, bringing good luck and success. Both its size – height 78 cm, length 120 cm and width 70 cm – and its unique decoration make this piece one of 2020’s highlighted novelties from the Herend Porcelain Manufactory, having thus gained international recognition!” Laszlo Szesztay, commerical director, Herend

Tabletop Accessories

Zieher KG was the winner in the Tabletop Accessories Category with its LED-ring for decanters. Zieher KG

LED-ring for decanters www.zieher.com

The gift set is an effective accessory for the Zieher decanters Eddy and Star and includes - besides the ring which is made of matt black silicone - the light, remote control and the charger. LED light and remote control offer various functions such as adjustable brightness, seven different colours and various colour changing functions. This new version of the basic ring for the Eddy and Star decanter offers the chance to put served wine in the spotlight. The rechargeable Zieher LED light fits exactly into the cavity at the bottom part of the ring and thus can put the served wine in the decanter into the limelight. In the beginning the illumination effect in the filled decanter can be very unobstrusive when serving strongly pigmented red wine. But at a decreasing level the play of light and colours becomes more and more intense in an exciting way.

Paul Yeomans and Mairead Wilmot of Tableware International pictured with Zieher's executive director sales, Dominik Zieher, center.

“When we created the LED-ring for decanters we thought it might get some attention, but that it would make the finals and win at the Tableware International Award is truly a very pleasant surprise for us! Thank you to the team of Tableware International for this – and, of course, for the great partnership for all these years!” Nikolan Dietz, marketing manager, Zieher

Hospitality Dinnerware

Nikko Company was the winner in the Hospitality Dinnerware Category with Novel Dragon. NIKKO COMPANY

Novel Dragon

www.nikko-tabletop.jp This modern-ethnic series combines geometric shapes derived from classic Asian patterns of good fortune for a bold yet detailed look. Nikko offers Made in Japan products manufactured completely at their own factory, from the processing of raw materials to the finishing of the products. With exceptional technology, Nikko fine bone china features a unique whiteness, which utilizes about 50 per cent bone ash to create a strong and luminous dinnerware. The deep red hue, together with shimmering delicate gold decorations, contrast with the glassy whiteness of the china to create a beautiful luxurious appearance. This series is adorned with many motifs considered to bring good fortune in Asia. The dragon symbolises “strength” and “good luck,” the peony “prosperity” and “peace,” and the clouds “mystical” and “fruitful.” Together, they are powerful. Nikko’s advanced decalcomania technologies are what make these delicate motifs so expressive. The deep red color is cadmium-free and leadfree, making them very safe. The white convex markings are finished in both matte and glossy touches to add a sophisticated depth to the texture. The gold decorations are both beautiful and durable thanks to polarized mica and GP guard, Nikko’s original gold and platinum decoration technology. They shimmer when seen from different angles, giving more glamour to the tabletop. “GP guard” is 400-times stronger against friction and five times stronger against dish washing than conventional decorations (according to Nikko, February 2017).
