a candle or enjoying a relaxing scent is a huge element of ‘hygge’ and some of the pared-down stylish brands like Himalayan, St Eval and Bolsius are a perfect choice here.
It’s really worth getting to grips with the subject of fragrance and how it can help your business grow. To gain some expert advice, I spoke to world-renowned ‘nose’ Roja Dove, who has worked as a perfumer for the likes of Guerlain, about how retailers can maximise the benefits of home fragrance in their business, and how best to advise customers in using fragrance in their own homes. I particularly liked his take on matching a home fragrance to someone’s personal way of dressing - how their taste in fabric, for instance, could be a pointer to their preferred fragrance choice. Fascinating and definitely worth a read. See page 42 for more. It seems that fragrance and decoration go hand in hand, with many products making quite the style statement in themselves. It’s fitting, then, that our cover story is Heart & Home. Their fragrancerich, soy-blend candles have an innovative lid design that give your customers a hint of the scent inside and look beautiful before they’re even lit. Read more on page 12. Men, women, teenagers are all buying into home fragrance. Whether it’s the experience of mix and matching their own wax melts from the likes of Xystos and their ScentChips, the pleasure of buying a heritage brand like Price’s or investing in a high-tech product like Mr & Mrs Fragrance from Heart of the Country, there really is something for everyone. The wonderful thing about Home Fragrance is that there’s always something new for customers to discover. Yankee, for instance, constantly offer exciting new collections through the year, often to coincide with events like Mother’s Day and

elcome to Gift Today’s annual Home Fragrance supplement in which we aim to bring you all the latest news, views and launches in this booming sector. There’s so much to say about home fragrance that we felt this category deserved its very own stand-alone publication and I hope you find inspiration here when it comes to buying for your business. Indeed, as Portfolio Organiser of Spring Fair, Nick Davison, told me, there really is something on offer for every business when it comes to home fragrance. Whether you have the space to offer a broad range of product or you can only manage to squeeze in a single range to match your business’s colour scheme or aesthetic, home fragrance really is worth buying into. Whether it’s the high end or high-tech, add-on or self-gifting, the great thing about home fragrance is that consumers buy products, use them and come back for more! Perhaps it’s because we’re experiencing such turbulent times that the likes of the scented candle are doing well. In my chat with Sara Allbright, home fragrance buyer for John Lewis, she mentioned the ‘candle effect’ mirroring the wellknown ‘lipstick effect’ - where people, when facing an economic crisis, buy less costly luxury goods. Instead of buying an expensive designer handbag, they buy an expensive lipstick; instead of buying an expensive designer sofa, they buy a luxury candle. After all, a little touch of luxury is a great way to spoil yourself or a loved one. You can read more on page 28. The Scandi-lifestyle ‘hygge’ trend plays its part, too, encouraging consumers to live a calmer, more mindful life and to spend quality time at home with family and friends. The simple act of lighting
Yankee Easter. In this issue we offer you a round-up of the latest products from the leading home fragrance companies. And once they find their favourite fragranced candle, reed diffuser or melt, customers buy them again and again. Which reminds me, it’s time to stock up on some mint fragrance for my beautiful diffuser from Ashleigh & Burwood. So, all that’s left to do is sit back, light and candle and enjoy the read.

Flame or flameless? Classic candles or wax melts? Fresh florals or masculine scents? Leading figures in the Home Fragrance industry talk about tips, trends and what 2017 smells like. HELEN SHIELD Director of Marketing, Enesco
TOM SYKES
When it comes to home fragrance, what will 2017 smell like?
Director, Xystos When it comes to home fragrance, what will 2017 smell like?
As we go into Spring and Summer, the fragrances will change to lighter fruitier and floral fragrances. Amongst our spring launches for Himalayan Candles are Sugared Lemon, Summer Fruit and Forgotten Violet.
The fragrances in 2017 will also be subtler in terms of blends and mix. Fragrance is, of course, crucial but so, too, is colour and there is a lot of green coming through. There are more pastel shades rather than solid colours in both the WoodWick and Village Candle ranges. These are more aesthetically pleasing for discerning end-users who might buy a powder blue or sage green candle rather than just having those that are red or blue.
What trends do you predict will be big in all areas of home fragrance?
What trends do you predict will be big in all areas of home fragrance? The growth of wax melts and electric melt burners has amazed me and there is a still lot of potential for expansion. We have probably seen a six-fold increase in the sales of wax melts and burners in the last two years. These are excellent ‘try me’ products at competitive price points. You have the opportunity to try a wax melt for a few pounds before you go on to purchase the fragranced candle at £25.99.
Your advice for retailers who are looking to buy/refresh their home fragrance offering? Retailers should continue to look for adjacencies and pick the brands they are comfortable with. WoodWick and Village Candle, which uses a cotton wick, sit nicely together and in terms of quality they are comparable products with the wick being the only significant difference. And both brands have very distinctive fragrances and complement each other extremely well. Competitively priced Candle Warmers in attractive contemporary vessels have been very strong at the start of 2017 and sold well at Spring Fair, while the Caption Gift Sets have also been popular with buyers. We expect strong sales from both throughout the year. Retailers will be aware that packaging, branding and labelling has to “jump off the shelf” to capture the attention of the consumer. You can no longer just present something in a brown box and hope that it will sell. In this regard, more and more work has gone into our new Cello collections to create the brand identity.
I believe that aroma diffusers will continue to be on trend but the popularity of candles will lead the way consumers are getting savvy to burn times and depth of fragrance and see the value in buying a quality product. Masculine fragrances are also becoming more popular. Tobacco Bark from our Himalayan Candles collection is one of our best sellers - this is an exotic mix of dark rum, incense, clove and sweet woody tobacco, with a hint of citrus and creamy vanilla absolutely delicious.
Your advice for retailers who are looking to buy/refresh their home fragrance offering. Knowledge is power, so know your products, talk to your consumers with confidence about burn time, how the fragrance is created. Know if the product is soy wax, environmentally friendly, where it is made and offer the consumer something different, something unique. You don’t have to have metre after metre of product; small beautifully presented collections, with a sample candle burning in the retail outlet, will make consumers feel they are buying something special and luxurious. I burn our Himalayan Candles “Patchouli Ginger” in my office and at home, it is my absolute favourite fragrance.
BEN STUBBS Director, Heart of the Country When it comes to home fragrance, what will 2017 smell like? We continue to see a rise in fine fragrances, fragrances inspired by classic perfumery. These fragrances inspire, elevate, seduce and delight the senses much like a perfume or aftershave would on a person - but in your home.
What trends do you predict will be big in all areas of home fragrance? Flameless fragrance is certainly “hot” at the moment! There has been a lot of press recently about the hazards associated with the burning of fragranced candles in homes. Diffusers and sachets produce beautiful, consistent fragrances without the need for a naked flame or supervision.
8 gifts today
Your advice for retailers who are looking to buy/refresh their home fragrance offering? Continuing on the flameless route. Choose products that welcome you home with fragrance. Fragrance is at its most effective when you walk into a room for the first time. Products like sachets and diffusers fragrance continually and will have a room perfectly fragranced for your return.
‘We have probably seen a six-fold increase in the sales of wax melts and burners in the last two years.’
PERRY SIMMONS Director, Stoneglow Candles When it comes to home fragrance, what will 2017 smell like? The fragrance for 2017 will be based on that stay-athome feeling - all wrapped up, cosy and comfortable, hygge! Stoneglow are offering a new Natural Wax range called Geometric with sculptured matt coloured glasses, textured materials all set off beautifully with fragrances such as soft Freesia & Cedar for a serene and comforting fragrance, and Rose & Oud with velvety rose petals and delicate wood notes for a fragrance hug. The Geometric range consists of four wonderful fragrances in candles, diffusers and refills.
What trends do you predict will be big in all areas of home fragrance?
NICKY DAWSON Head of Design, Price’s Candles When it comes to home fragrance, what will 2017 smell like? This year sees an evolution from 2016 rather than a revolution. There is still a large focus on pastel colours and, as always with the summer months, light and sharp floral and citrus fragrances to refresh the home. In our new large jar range we have lavender & lemongrass as a great example of evolving fragrances from last year with the addition of lemongrass to create extra intrigue.
What trends do you predict will be big in all areas of home fragrance? Candles are still the biggest area of home fragrance and continue to grow strongly year-on-year. Within candle brands, the trend is to buy British with top quality products.
Your advice for retailers who are looking to buy/refresh their home fragrance offering. My biggest advice is to increase quality of offering. If, after purchasing, the consumer gets the candle or diffuser home and it doesn’t perform well, they won’t be back to buy another. There’s such a great variety of qualities in the market it can often benefit to go with well-established brands built on quality. With candles, it isn’t all about strength of fragrance. Check for an even burn, no sooting, and quality and realism of the fragrance over strength. These are all signs of a great candle
Big trends for 2017 will be the “gift of giving,” making occasion candles and diffusers the perfect choice. Stoneglow have teamed up with renowned calligrapher Carol Kemp to launch a stunning collection of fragrance candles and diffusers to let that someone know you are thinking of them.
Your advice for retailers who are looking to buy/refresh their home fragrance offering. Post-Brexit and Britishness are key this year. Retailers and consumers alike will be looking for price stability and high-end quality! Stoneglow are a UK candle and diffuser manufacturer who offers this in abundance. For autumn/winter 2017, we will be offering two new ranges - Luna and Geometric - along with revamped Seasonal Collections. Luna is a premium range of luminous candles and revitalised diffusers with opulent textures, luxury materials, combined with sumptuous perfumes for a decadent fragrance experience.
RICHARD WOOD Sales Director UK and Ireland, Bolsius When it comes to home fragrance, what will 2017 smell like? 2017 will be the year of individuality with an increased offering in scent blending. Customers will be looking to create their own signature scent within homes and retailers need to keep one step ahead by, for instance, offering customers a wide selection of affordable Wax Melts.
What trends do you predict will be big in all areas of home fragrance? Wax Melts will continue to grow in popularity throughout 2017 with customers wanting to create their own home fragrances to match their moods. Here at Bolsius our Wax Melts range includes a selection of pic ’n’ mix chips and pre-packaged fragranced chips making them suitable for retailers of all sizes as they don’t take up too much space on the shop floor.
Your advice for retailers who are looking to buy/refresh their home fragrance offering. I would advise retailers to buy into Wax Melts. One of the biggest trends for 2017, retailers will be able to offer customers the ability to create their own scents, becoming master perfumers for their own homes.

GA Awards
A line of candle-making kits by Northumbrian Candleworks won the Giftware Association’s Home Fragrance Award at Spring Fair last month. We caught up with the winner Peter Cooke for a quick chat.
DIY Candle Kit scoops GA Award Q: Congratulations on the Award! How does it feel to win? A: We were delighted because we are such a small business. There are just five of us in total, with some casual staff coming in seasonally when we need them. Even though we are a small, niche player, we compete in a very competitive environment with companies who have been established longer than us. Q: When did you start making candles? A: Originally I had a gift shop and sold the candles very successfully. Then I got an email from the lady who made them saying she couldn’t supply me anymore because the company was growing too fast and she didn’t want to make a big candle business out of it. I had a lightbulb moment and thought it would be nice if I got involved in the production of one of the products I supplied in the shop. She trained me and I took over in January 2013. Q: How did the business develop? A: My initial plan was to develop a little area at the back of the gift shop where I could do the candlemaking, but we soon had to move to bigger premises – and then, shortly afterwards, to even bigger ones. We are now in a 1,000-foot workshop with a factory shop attached once pallets and storage space were 10 gifts today
involved, it became a different kind of business. From an initial database of around 25 “live” customers, we now have about 350 trade customers across UK now and we export to about eight countries. Q: Where did the idea for a candle-making kit come from? A: Customers were coming in and they could see what we were doing. All the talk about candlemaking sparked the initial idea of putting together a kit. I looked and discovered that there weren’t any gift-relevant candle-making kits – what was available was on websites and going into craft shops but not into gift shops. I realised there was a gap in the market and I put the first kit together in 2016. Q: What inspired you to enter the 2017 Awards? A: This is the first time we had entered Gift of the Year and we did it because some of our customers suggested we enter. The reaction we were getting to the product made us think it was worthwhile entering and really running with it. I’m glad we did! I think one of the key things was that they’re more than just a kit to make candles - the candles can be made, personalised and given as gifts, or the kit can be given as an experience. Q: What are your next plans? A: We have developed another six kits to add to the initial range. They sit neatly into our range - if people like the kits, then that helps sell the candles. Growth areas have been in garden centres, farm shops, visitor attractions because they like our naturalness, packaging and the quality of our products.

Heart & Home
Heart & Home The art of home fragrance naturally Help your customers find that perfect sunshine scent this spring with Heart & Home’s fragrancerich, soy-blend scented candles. Why not take a closer look at some of the main points that make this the home fragrance brand to choose?
It’s Only Natural
Heart & Home candles are made with a soy-blend wax. If you – or your customers – don’t know what this means, here are the key reasons why this is a great choice. • Strong Scent. Soy holds fragrance so well that the gorgeous scent can be enjoyed from the first burn to the last - even when the candle is not lit. • Longer burn time. This makes the Heart & Home collections great value for money, with a large 340g candle having an average burn time of 70 hours. • ‘Clean’ burn. This means less black soot and therefore cleaner surroundings. • Kinder to the environment. Soy wax is renewable and biodegradable which means that it is actually better for the environment. This is becoming more and more of an important part of the buying decision for the conscientious consumer of today in the ever-evolving home fragrance marketplace. 12 gifts today
Innovative Lid Design
Heart & Home’s unique jar lids tell your customers a story before they even lift them off to enjoy the fragrance, and give a visual hint of the scent inside. What’s more, these beautifully-designed lids make a décor design statement when the candle’s not lit.

Candles
Burning candles in summer months? Of course you can! Think about fresh fragrances, burning candles in the day and creating an ambience on summer evenings with unscented candles to create an offering for warm weather fragrance buyers. Bolsius

t’s easy to assume that candles are best for winter, when you’re snuggled up inside and it’s cold and dark outside. However, there is plenty in this growing market that’s perfect for the lighter summer months. ‘The big trend in Europe, especially in Holland where Bolsius is from, is to light candles throughout the day when it’s light outside,’ says Richard Wood, Sales Director, UK and Ireland, Bolsius UK Ltd. ‘In the UK, candle sales tend to be more seasonal, with biggest sales between early October and March. We want to change that. For Bolsius, it’s all about encouraging customers to actually burn their candles. Candles can be a consumable, not just a decorative prop. If people burn their candles, they come back and buy more. It’s all about

building that consumption.’ Jacqui Russo, Group Marketing Manager at Heart & Home, talks about the place of candles in outdoor living: ‘As we dream of warmer days, thoughts turn to outdoor dining. Enjoying the beauty of our gardens, perhaps with family and friends for an informal lunch or barbecue creates the opportunity to set a beautiful table which reflects the joy of a relaxing summer’s day, full of blossoming flowers and fresh, zesty juice. What better way to mirror this fabulous feeling than by adding candles which set the mood, echoing all that is glorious about al fresco dining,’ While burning candles in the day is all about creating ambience, this is also a place where fragrance can come into play, too. While spicy, aromatic scents are perfect for warming us on cold winter days, summer is perfect for lighter, fresher and floral fragrances. This is where the likes of Yankee come into play, capturing every season and special occasion with true-to-life scents. Their Pure Essence ranges include Cherry Blossom, Linden Tree and Wild Mint. Candleberry, famous for their powerful fragrances, also offer a whole range of fresh scents that are perfect for summer. Try 12 Roses, Beach House and Cherry Blossom Festival. Fragrance can be a
wonderful way to ring the seasonal changes and bring freshness or warmth into your home, according to Anna Borrett, Product Development Manager at Ashleigh & Burwood. ‘As the days start to get lighter, people look forward to smelling the fresh and vibrant scents around them in the garden, on the walk to school or driving with an open window on the way to work,’ she says. ‘Nothing can beat the sunshine on your face after a winter of darkness. In the first part of SS17 I see fragrance for the home reflecting the need for newness, the need to feel revived and awakened. By bringing the outside in with scents like Garden Mint and Herb Garden we can surround ourselves with the exciting scents of spring. It can make

our homes feel fresh and new. They literally add a spring to the step!’ Finally, it’s worth remembering that consumers are getting more interested in what goes into their candles these days. ‘Back in the 1990s it was almost unheard of to create a wax candle using vegetable material as a base but, bit by bit, customers started to notice the benefits of our candles and products and over the decades we have noticed that our alternative products are almost becoming mainstream,’ says Daniel Pettitt Managing Director of Heaven Scent. Whether you’re looking for scented or unscented, timeless or seasonal, there’s sure to be something to inspire you on the following pages.

HAND MADE AT HIMALAYAN
Himalayan Candles combine beautiful, eternal fragrances with vintage art and traditional artisan hand-making skills. The company was founded in 2004 by Julia Leaphart, a venture that started in her kitchen as a way to connect with a childhood spent in a small town in the foothills of the Himalayas, combined with a need to earn a living for herself and her young daughter. Julia began by pouring candles into sourced wooden containers and selling them at local antique shows and craft fairs. Each candle is poured by hand using a natural soy wax blended with high quality essential and fragrance oils, whilst cotton wicks ensure a clean and even burn. All candles are handmade and packaged in Decatur, Georgia. The containers used are unique and handmade, and can be reused once the candle has burned away. Amongst the delightful fragrances available are: Peony, Anise & Black Pepper, Ancient Philosophy, Grapefruit Pine and Tobacco Bark. Containers vary from artisan tall-bubbled glass, to powder boxes, decorative vintage style replicas of antique powder puff containers made from glass with etched metal lids in two finishes. Burn-times range from twenty to 160 hours.

SCENTED CANDLES BY MELT With a passion for hot wax and fine fragrance, Melt have been creating candles of exceptional quality since 1999. Fragrance is known for turning your mood and creating the right ambience in your surroundings – and Melt’s preferred choice is always elegant, sophisticated, and a tad refined; perhaps confident and slightly sexy; or, as some splendid newspaper of note said, ‘recherché.’ Indeed, one of their newest additions to their range is exactly that – ‘recherché’ (translated as ‘rare & unusual’). It’s best described as: ‘very complex on the nose; dry, fine woods with the addition of some soft leather and aldehydic florals.’ All of their candles are hand-poured and can take up to 36 hours to produce –
and working with molten waxes ensures the candle is fragranced throughout. Melt’s range has now grown to include 33 unique fine fragrances. Each range consists of six candle sizes. Three pillar and three container candles with burn times from 22 hours up to 160 hours. As usual with Melt, it’s all about the fragrance.

Retail Interview
‘People are getting braver with their home fragrance buys’ Home fragrance buyer for John Lewis, Sara Allbright, talks to Editor Sally Norton and throws light on the latest trends in candles and home fragrance. Q: How did you become the John Lewis buyer for Home & Gift Collections/Candleshop? A: Fourteen years ago I left the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design with a degree in Textile Design and got a job at John Lewis at entry level as Buying Assistant for Lighting. I moved on to become Assistant Buyer in the Christmas Shop - I remember people looking oddly at me on the Tube
because I had glitter on my nose! I then became Assistant Buyer for Stationery before being promoted to Junior Buyer of Gift Food. After a year as Buyer for Wall Décor (art, mirrors, clocks and frames), I became buyer for Home & Gift Collections/Candle Shop. I’ve been in this role since 2013. I’ve got a kitchen cupboard full of candles and diffusers, because I always need to put products to the test. It can be quite challenging because there are so many variations in products. For just candles you need to consider what sort of wax is used, the percentage of fragrance, the sort of wick…the list goes on. Q: The home fragrance market is booming. Why do you think this is? A: People used to talk about the “lipstick effect” during tough times, now it’s “the candle effect.” People buy a candle to cheer themselves up. You can’t necessarily afford to go and buy a whole new sofa, but a new candle can update your home and lift your mood. The whole “hygge” trend, which is all about rallying against the chaoticness of modern life and spending time at home with family helps, too. We are doing really well with a brand called Scandinavisk, which really has benefitted from the buzz around this Scandi-lifestyle trend. Q: What will 2017 smell like? A: There’s a lot of floral for SS17, especially when combined with pattern.
28 gifts today
We’re very excited to have launched an exclusive range with Designers Guild, and another with Sara Miller. The combination of fragrance, design and pattern is important for us. There are perennial favourites like fig and they are still doing well, but I have really noticed that what’s coming through are fragrances with an ingredient called “oud” in them. (Oud is a Middle Eastern ingredient derived from the tropical agar tree.) They’re doing well in sales for us and, it seems that whenever a new brand comes to see us, it’s all about “something & oud.” Fiery and smoky scents are doing really well too, and I think this is because men are buying into the home fragrance market now. There are some stylistic changes in the design, too, to appeal to the male market. Overall, these new fragrances tend to be quite intense and sophisticated, and I would probably tie that alongside the fact that more and more people are investing in the premium end of home fragrance. I think it shows that the quality of product and the status of brands has developed – some people are now willing to invest up to hundreds of pounds in some of the bigger candles. Q: Do people buy what they know, or are they willing to try something new? A: People are getting braver with their home fragrance buys. Of course, there are always customers who want
something quite literal, something that says “I am a cherry candle,” but people have definitely moved on and they are willing to try something more interesting. Perhaps, with the likes of oud, it’s because it implies a sense of the exotic. Q: Do classic dinner candles still sell well? A: Yes, we offer a good colour range on dinner candles with True Grace. Generally most people stick to creams and ivories, red at Christmas, but the contemporary customer will use neon pink or orange dinner candles to update this classic look. Q: How are reed diffusers doing for you? A: We find that our customers are early adopters of new technology and reed diffusers, in particular, are doing really well. They appeal to the customer who has children, because they’re safer. They provide a constant fragrance and you don’t have to worry about lighting them and melting them down to the right level. They can be quite design-led, too, often offering a striking piece to display in your home.
We have just launched a John Lewis range under our Design Project brand, quite stylised pieces featuring smoked glass and a reed diffuser with really thick reeds. Q: Are people still buying room sprays? A: Sprays are a very small part of what we do now and I think this is because these were essentially a precursor to reed diffusers. However, it’s interesting to look at the sprays that do well, because the brands are being clever with them. For instance with a range called Neom, they’re called “mists,” and the whole ethos behind them is about wellbeing and how they make you feel. It’s still a room spray but also something that’s personal, something that can give you a better night’s sleep or more energy. Q: What about electronic diffusers? A: We saw people buying into these quite early too. There’s a real level of practicality in these. For instance, there are models with alarm clocks and lights, so they don’t just do one thing. Q: And wax melts? A: Wax melts are doing well for us at the entry level of the market for low to midpriced brands, and Lily-Flame is doing well for us here. However, when we tried wax melts at higher price points, with more premium brands, it didn’t work so well. I think wax melts are a novel way to fragrance the home, and there’s a homespun element to them, with lots of people setting up little cottage industries – they seem to do really well on the likes of Etsy and Notonthehighstreet. com. In fact, Made In The UK home fragrance is a good story – there are brands with a real heritage and there’s
Katie Loxton
‘People used to talk about the “lipstick effect” during tough times– now it’s “the candle effect.” People buy a candle to cheer themselves up.’ a huge manufacturing strength here. This is good for retailers, too, because logistically we can get access to stock quicker. Q: What’s more popular – scented or unscented candles? A: We do a massive volume of the unscented candles in our Basics range; people are definitely buying into big packs of unscented tea lights and basic pillar candles. Some of our sculptured candles are quite popular, and these tend to be unscented. We do a gold elephant candle which has incredible carved detail and it gets amazing reviews online. People say they’re so beautiful, they’d never burn them and simply use them as ornaments. If you look at the market data, it’s all growing but candle holders – lanterns, tea light holders and so on – are seen as an area that will have more growth than anything else going forward. Anything metal or glass that can hold a candle is doing well and, in our outdoor living department this summer, lanterns will be strong. Q: How do you think an independent can successfully build a home fragrance offering? A: The one thing that’s always worth thinking about is “fragrance families” – floral, citrus, oceanic and so on - and making sure you have something to offer from all the key “families.” Most brands will have something for each one and it’s a matter of making sure you pick product that will appeal to a wider range of customers. In short, don’t just choose all florals! There are some really Lily-Flame
good brands that target the gift category quite specifically. For instance, we do really well with Katie Loxton candles and Lily-Flame. They’re often sentiment or slogan-based, are a keen price point and can be self-purchase. Putting them near the till makes them an impulse buy for self-purchase or as an add-on. Q: Where do you do your key buying? A: Spring Fair comes at a bad time for us, but we always go to Maison & Objet in Paris so we can meet up with the French and Italian brands. A lot of the key British ones show out there, too. We go to Top Drawer to find people at the start of the journey, so to speak. What we do a lot more of is what we call “inspiration and competitive” shopping at home and abroad, looking at what other retailers are stocking and perhaps finding brands we haven’t seen before. Q: What’s going to be big for AW17 and beyond? A: We are looking at product with a different point of view, something that offers the customer something different. It’s such a crowded market and can be hard to stand out while staying commercial. There are so many brands out there and we only have a finite amount of space, so we want to offer something different with every brand we put in. For instance we are looking at things with different technology. There’s some interest around LED candles at the moment. From a safety point of view they are great but some companies are now starting to look at how you can put scent into an LED candle. It’s fascinating to see where the next development will be.

Prosecco and Gin & Tonic candles by Vineyard Candles are a couple of our top selling home fragrances. I have stocked Stoneglow Candles for over five years now and their latest ranges are proving just as popular as ever. I also stock McKelvie Candles which are made here in Fife. Our customers love their tinned candles. Scents include Highland Heather and Clootie Dumpling, which always sell out fast! Florals, fruity and seashore type fragrances are proving very popular. Meadow Flower and Seashore fragrances in the Botanicals range by Stoneglow Candles have been doing very well.
We love Pintail Candles in Delilah Petal, they have always been a good seller for us. Their filled tin candle style is a really nice smelling, simple, quality product at a great price for impulse buys. Their fresh new scents for spring that we have already sold out of are White Lilac and Daffodil and Morning Dew. We loved the Paddywax range of candles at Top Drawer, they are so beautifully made and Beefayre is always a favourite too. This season we love any candles in printed ceramic bowls. We also loved the fresh, beautifully scented new collection from Tiptree that we discovered at Top Drawer, made from the fruits that they grow on their Essex farm and having been turning into jam since 1885 and now they have turned their hand to beautifully scented, simply packaged candles. They also make really good gin!

NIC STONE The Bottle Kiln, West Hallam True Grace continues to tick over nicely, despite being relatively expensive (though it is very good). Parkminster have been good, as have our own label candles from Heaven Scent Incense. Small scented candles are a great little gift and an easy buy. Soy and smokeless candles are gaining in popularity, and since we added bergamot to our range of True Grace it has become the best seller.

DERRICK ARMITAGE Present Perfect, Melrose For us, candles have always outsold reed diffusers and wax melts. WoodWick candles are always a steady seller. We also stock Kringle and Wax Lyrical. We stock handmade soaps from Northumberland-based Oakwood Soaperie and also Patisserie de Bain but have never seen large demand for bath/body products. Fruity/kitchen fragrances seem to be prevalent at the moment. For example, WoodWick has Rhubarb and Radish, Cucumber and Citrus Melon amongst others.

KAREN GREIG Destined For Home, Edinburgh, Scotland For me it’s all about soy, whether it’s candles or melts - wins every time with my customers. Soy provides a clean burn, melts evenly down and gives a good scent throw. As we go into spring there is more interest in clean, fresh, uplifting fragrances. I recently purchased an Electric Wax Melt Burner (I like to try everything before I buy it – it makes it easier when assisting customers) and now I am totally converted. It’s much safer and I’ve put it on a timer so I can set it to come on before I open up!

Wax Melts
Melting pot of ideas The growing sector of wax melts can prove a good entry point and in-store experience for your home fragrance customers.
T
he wax melt category is on the rise. Comparatively cheaper than various other alternatives such as jar candles and reed diffusers, wax melts are available in a huge variety of fragrances coupled with eye-catching packaging. What’s more, they can give customers the chance to tailor-make their own home fragrance. According to Grand View Research’s Wax Melts Market Analysis and Segment Forecast for 2014-2025, the wax melt market is expected to grow. ‘Wax melts are used as a home fragrance product and are readily available in various shapes, sizes and colours,’ says the report. ‘Moreover, the increasing product usage in commercial buildings, such as shopping malls, offices and market complexes, will promote market development. ‘Hectic work schedules and changing lifestyles have led the consumer to use wax melts owing to its soothing effects, is projected to o ast spur market demand over the forecast period.’ Tom Sykes, Director of Xystos, has seen this growth up close and personal with the company’s sales off ScentChips: ‘The growth of wax melts ts and electric melt burners has amazed d me and there is still a lot of potential for expansion,’ he says. ‘We have probably seen a six-fold increase in the he e sales of wax melts and burners in the

You can try a wax melt for a few pounds before you go on to purchase the fragranced candle.’ Over at Bolsius, the popularity of wax melts became clear at Spring Fair where their Wax Melts range of pic ‘n’ mix chips drew quite the crowd, with a demonstrator showing people how to blend fragrances for a bespoke style. Retailers seemed to enjoy playing with fragrance like their customers do. The idea behind the range is that customers can enjoy a fragrance that reflects their emotion at that moment, or even change fragrances throughout the day. Price’s have an interesting offering, too, with their Petali range presenting fragranced wax in special
pods which are popped into the dish of the warmer. This means the wax never comes into contact with the warmer, providing a clean finish. When you want to try another fragrance, simply discard the pod and use a fresh one. Indeed, most of the growth in the home air care sector came from the emerging sector of wax melts, according to Vitaliy Zhyhun, Client Business Partner at research company Neilsen UK. At a speech given at the IFRA UK Fragrance Forum in October 2016, he revealed that sales of wax melts have grown 10 fold over the last two years. As Mary Portas said in her keynote speech at
Spring Fair: ‘It’s about creating an experience in store. ‘We need to look at our retail experiences as social experiences and at the heart of this is interaction. Although online retail is great and offers accessibility, speed, comparison and research – it can’t provide the connection that occurs through speaking to a member of staff in store. They want to get outside their homes, despite the internet having become such a part of their everyday lives. They still want experiences.’ When it comes to home fragrance, wax melts really tick all the boxes.

Reed Diffusers
Stoneglow
The need for reeds Beautifully packaged reed diffusers have become one of the fastest growing home fragrance formats, subtly scenting homes with classic, seasonal and special occasion fragrances. We take a closer look.
R
eed diffusers may be taken for granted as part of the home fragrance offering but, in fact, they are still quite new. The trend for reed diffusers only really began at the turn of the Millennium in the States, with us in Britain starting to catch on soon afterwards. ‘Reed diffusers really have become an essential part of every candle supplier’s offering,’ says Tom Sykes from Xystos. It’s no wonder really when you consider that these products are so easy to use – just insert the reeds into the bottle of scented liquid and enjoy the fragrance that it naturally diffused through them into the air. There’s no flame to worry about, no soot, no risk of fire. No wonder they’re seen everywhere from homes to offices, hotel rooms to Buckingham Palace! Again, there is a wide range of scents to choose from, meaning you can tailor
the fragrance to the space – fresh clean scents for bathrooms and kitchens, fresh linen scents for bedrooms and fruit or floral scents for halls and living rooms where you want to make a statement. Many consumers use reed diffusers in fresh, clean fragrances – or even odour-eliminating ones – to keep homes and workplaces smelling fresh where there are smokers, dogs or cooking smells. Price’s Candles specialise in this. ‘There’s definitely a desire for greener, more natural living in 2017 and this is reflected in fragrance,’ says Anna Borrett, Product Development Manager at Ashleigh & Burwood. ‘Green scents signify freshness, growth and natural beauty, all things that consumers are yearning to bring in to revitalise their homes and diffuse the technological saturation of modern life. There ’ll be a trend towards fresher, more natural scents influenced by fragrant herbs and green foliage as well as designs reflecting natural inspirations.’ Clever companies not only look at the fragrances within the diffuser, but also the containers they present the reeds in. Stoneglow specialise in beautifully-presented reed diffusers, with the 200ml offering fragrace that lasts for up to 16 weeks. Heyland & Whittle offer the stylish H&W London, featuring an elegant reed diffuser beautifully packaged with the stunning London skyline on a
striking coloured backdrop. D&J Glassware takes the design element even further with mouth-blown glass globes individually made by artisan glassblowers keen to keep their ancient art alive. When seen from a retailer’s perspective, reed diffusers are a winwin, an all year round bestseller with customers coming back time and again to purchase their favourite fragrance refills. Time to stock up.
Top Tip
Cross merchandise around the shop, incorporating reed diffusers into in-store displays. Colourcoordinate them to work with other products for impulse and gift purchasing. Even better, you’ll be greeted with a beautiful scent when you open up in the morning. D&J Glassware

Roja Dove
Scents of place Master perfumer and fragrance specialist Roja Dove explains to editor Sally Norton how gift retailers can successfully scent their shops and help their customers choose fragranced gifts.
W
hen it comes to fragrance expertise, there’s simply no bigger name than Roja Dove. He is a world-renowned fragrance specialist, fragrance historian and perfumer whose fragrances are sold all over the globe at luxury department stores. Born and raised in England, his career in perfumery began in 1981 when he joined the legendary French perfume house Guerlain, working there for 20 years before leaving to set up his own companies RDPR and then Roja Parfums. Roja is one of the most significant ‘noses’ of modern times, is able to identify over 800 different scents blindfolded and, rather famously, is 42 gifts today
unable to travel on the tube because he finds the smell overwhelming, describing it as like ‘listening to 10,000 pieces of music at one time.’ Roja runs occasional fragrance workshops through The Fragrance Foundation – with this year’s entitled ‘The Fundamentals of Fragrance.’ Here he shares his thoughts on home fragrance with readers of Gifts Today… I fell in love with fragrance when I was a small boy My mother (who was an incredibly happy, vivacious and glamorous individual) was off to a cocktail party and came in to my room to give me a kiss goodnight. She was dressed in a gold lamé dress and the light from the landing created a corona around her.
As she bent down to kiss me, the smell of her perfume mixed with her face powder left a lasting impression on me. Since then, I became obsessed with the workings of my nose. I would steal into her room and unlock her bedside table, where I would un-stopper all her French perfumes and inhale. The obsession grew from there and whilst other boys were spending their pocket money on god knows what, I was saving up for perfumes. It wasn’t till I reached my 20s that I realised I could take it from a passion to a career. I wrote to Guerlain so often that they decided I would be less of a nuisance working for them. Before that I had planned to go into languages - I studied Russian, English and French or medical science.
Home fragrance has become a very personal style statement Scenting a space is an extension of one’s individuality. It is a way of marking out your territory and really owning your surroundings and it is as essential as the ‘signature scent’ you wear on your skin since people have to be invited into your home to experience it. There are no rules about scenting your environment - everybody’s taste is different Be experimental and burn candles in unison to create a pleasing, signature cocktail, but do try to select scents that complement each other with shared styles or some similar notes. Don’t add flowers to the fireplace,
For The Home for example, instead add cossetting gourmand notes like vanilla to give that toasted marshmallow effect to the smokiness of burning embers. Use scented candles when you need to add a burst of fragrance to the home Burn for an hour or so before guests
and you can look for a fragrance that contains these same basic notes. Choose a candle that will become an extension of their décor and melt perfectly into the room. Scent is never prescriptive and one person’s interior décor might not provide the same sort of canvas for a scent as the next person’s. Being style-conscious when
‘Scenting a space is an extension of one’s individuality; It is a way of marking out your territory and is as essential as the signature scent you wear on your skin since people have to be invited into your home to experience it.’ come round to achieve maximum scenting potential, then snuff the candle and squirrel it away – it will make your home appear naturally, beautifully fragrant. A good quality reed diffuser produces a soft and constant perfume Be sure to rotate the reeds once a week, as the scent doesn’t actually soak into and travel up and out the reed. The scent emits from the end of the reed that has been macerated in perfume for a week or so and then exposed to the air. Choose quality I would say the only mistake you can make is with the quality of your scent. A cheap, highly synthetic fragrance can smell like surface spray, cheapen the surroundings of the home, and even give residents and guests headaches. Choosing a candle is the same as choosing a piece of furniture - you can do it on the cheap but it won’t have the same effect. Allow fragrances to sell themselves by scenting the retail space with an individual product It can become all too easy to want to make your mark with scent but it can become cacophonous and therefore undermine the nuances of each individual scent. Instead, choose a single scent each day. When buying for someone else, consider the items they have around the house Think about the flowers or spices they use in the kitchen, as these will be a good indicator of their olfactive taste
Roja has his own range of home fragrance – Pour Maison. ‘I believe your home should smell as personal and inviting as the scent on your skin, each fragrance celebrates British craftsmanship as they are handmade in England. Meticulously crafted to reflect the richness of the raw materials I used to create them.’
Baies Reed Diffuser ‘A medley of berries create a soft, sweet and relaxing aroma.’
shopping for a scent shows you’ve really thought of your friend. Consider various elements of their sense of style. Do they prefer opulent interiors and dress in luxurious fabrics and colours? Then the sumptuous scent of an Oriental scent is a solid match. Perhaps they favour the natural simplicity of Scandi-style? A linear scent with a nice natural element keeps things on-par – think a clean pine-based fragrance. Sight is a huge part of the shopping process It’s essential, even when it comes to something that relies on another sense like scent. It is important to find ways to bring the themes, stories and style of the scent to life to appeal to people’s tendency to absorb communication visually. When confronted with an array of candles and bottles, shoppers need a way to identify the few they will approach instinctively, as they cannot (and usually will not) commit their time to each one – most especially if everything looks the same from the off. Training is still a big part of what I do. Whether it’s training industry professionals from sales teams to members of the press, to travelling the world and training every person that sells my own scent, I still train people. Training is how I began making my name in the fragrance industry, so I still make time for it now whilst running my own brand. Workshops are open to the public through The Fragrance Foundation (which I am a board member of) and I tend to do these twice annually.

Bath, Body & Home
It makes Scents Scented treats for bath, body and home make year-round gifting solutions. We look at some of the key trends that are influencing buying. It’s Only Natural According to Euromonitor, consumers in the UK are amongst the biggest spenders on beauty and personal care in Western Europe. For a highly saturated market, the move to a more holistic approach to health and wellness can be seen. Consumers demand more natural organic products, with a strong emphasis on quality ingredients and formulations. Heaven Scent offer natural products from their HQ in the Wiltshire countryside. ‘We have updated our bath and body formulas to meet the new industry standards that are changing all the time,’ says MD Daniel Pettitt.
Safe Scents Flameless and breakage-free methods of scented the home continue to be popular. Sachets are still proving popular, as they’re affordable and effective. ‘With no naked flame, no spills or breakages why bother burning a candle, diffusing with reeds or pumping a spray?’ says Ben from Heart of the Country. ‘Just remove the sachet from its shelf life extending cellophane and leave the sachet to do what it does best, fragrance.’ Manor House Home Fragrance is a good place to look with its range of pot pourris, sprays, drawer liners and

sachets along with newly launched collection of luxury hand washes. All products are produced by hand in their Suffolk workrooms, using mainly British packaging and fragrances.
Booming Beauty Sets ‘Beauty sets remain a popular gift choice, particularly at Christmas, with high levels of festive spending keeping the market afloat,’ says Charlotte Libby, Senior Beauty Analyst at Mintel. In the company’s Beauty and Personal Care Gift Sets - UK - August 2016 report, she observed that ‘beautyconscious young women are most likely to ask for sets as gifts, or buy for themselves to save money on individual products.’
Novelty Gifts Consumers can make a splash with these scented pick-me-up items that are perfect for gifting. Poo-Pourri from Joe Davies may sound like a joke but with over 20 million bottles already sold worldwide, it’s not to be sniffed at! The ‘before-you-go’ toilet spray uses sweet-smelling essential oils and other natural compounds to keep bad smells at bay in the bathroom.
Indulgent Treats A scented bath or body product can turn the everyday into something
special. For instance, the Beluma Bodycare collection at Aromatize offers luxury hand wash & hand lotion or body wash & body lotion gift sets, both are available in eight popular pular fragrance combinations. Also,, the pretty packaging of the Rose & Co range from Joe Davies really adds to the feeling of being pampered. red.
