AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE

W

elcome to Tableware International’s third annual Awards of Excellence showcase. Over the next 92 pages we bring you some of the most exemplary works of art this industry has produced over the past year or so. The 2020 Tableware International Awards of Excellence takes place during Ambiente 2020 and we honour the finest our industry has to offer. We have been thrilled and really very honoured at both the quantity and quality of entries this year. Yet again we can say there has been another increase in the number of companies putting their products and brands forward for our 2020 awards, testament to the high esteem they are held in. This is an award for the industry, judged by the industry. You will not find higher praise than that from your colleagues. The following pages introduce you to our acclaimed judging panel – all very busy people who love and value the tableware industry. They have gone above and beyond the call of duty, taking time to judge each entry based on its innovation, design and functionality, aesthetics and storytelling. The 2020 Awards of Excellence features 18 different categories including; fine dinnerware, casual dinnerware, serveware, var ware, licensed collaborations, flatware-cutlery, fine glassware, casual glassware, decorative, giftable tableware, coffee and teaware, metals, artisanal, tabletop accessories, outdoor tableware, hospitality dinnerware, hospitality glassware and sustainability. And not forgetting our Lifetime Achievement Award Winner who will be announced on the night of the awards.

We have received entries from esteemed names such as Waterford, Villeroy & Boch, Nikko, Hering Berlin, Denby, Nambè, Lenox, Riedel, LSA International and many, many more. Our finalists – who you will discover over the course of the following pages – have been chosen because their products bring something new, exciting, fresh or even just downright functional, to the table. Whether it is design or aesthetics, each finalist has caught the eye of our judges for very honourable reasons. Our sponsors too deserve mention for their incredible continued support which we are always grateful for – you can learn more about them over the following pages. Supporting awards such as these is important. Because by showing your support – whether that is through sponsorship of an award, through being a judge or through taking the time to actually enter the awards themselves, you are showing that you value the industry as a whole. You think it is worth your time. And that is what we need, we must appreciate this industry because it deserves your time and it deserves your appreciation. And we, Tableware International, are incredibly proud to host an awards ceremony which honours the talents of so many of you. If you have entered an awards category but have not been named as a finalist, we thank you and encourage you to enter again next year. If you have been named as a finalist, we congratulate you, and look forward to seeing you all at Ambiente 2020!

Hering Berlin

Palmhouse X www.heringberlin.com

PalmHouse X is designer Stefanie Hering’s latest decor series on both bisque and glazed porcelain, handcrafted in the Hering Berlin masterworkshops at Porzellan Manufaktur Reichenbach, Germany. With PalmHouse X, the designer is presenting a unique reinterpretation of a classic of porcelain culture: using a sophisticated process, she has translated floral motifs into a decoration that is abstractly avant-garde as it is sensual. The result of Stefanie Hering’s years of experimentation is based on X-ray images of orchids and adds a new dimension to the characteristic selection of decorations from Hering Berlin. Furthermore she has added a completely new, innovative interpretation to the wide range of traditional floral decorations worldwide. PalmHouse X is aimed at anyone who loves the decorative, aesthetics, and colours – while still having an eye for the essence of the things that PalmHouse X reflects in its strikingly reduced forms. The development of the dyes used for this decoration is the result of extensive experiments of a kind only possible in a manufactory like Hering Berlin, where both the designers and the artisans implementing the designs have decades of experience with porcelain and all related processes. The colours used in PalmHouse X have both the luminosity and transparency of watercolours, but were specially developed by Stefanie Hering for decorating unglazed bisque porcelain. During the firing process, they are fused with the porcelain mass so that they will not lose their luminosity even in the dishwasher.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAY… “Completely new, innovative interpretation to the wide range of traditional floral decorations. Great mix of the luminosity and transparency of watercolours decorating unglazed bisque porcelain. The collection is really elegant and speaks of English eccentricity.”

Nikko Company

Twinkle Mosaic

www.nikko-company.co.jp This series was inspired by the luxurious resort scene of the Mediterranean. There are four mix-and-match designs that are fun alone or with a combination of choices. Nikko Fine Bone China features a unique whiteness, which utilises about 50 per cent bone ash to create a strong and luminous dinnerware. Two tones of gold, one sparkling and one matte, shine on this beautifully sheer white foundation. The gold decorations adorning this series are created with GP guard, Nikko’s beautiful and durable original gold and platinum decoration technology, along with sound matte polarized mica. The gold hues change with the angle of the beholder and the lighting arrangement, enabling a wide possibility of expressions. GP guard is 400 times stronger against friction and five times stronger against dishwashing than conventional decorations (according to Nikko, February 2017). White convex decalcomania is also used to create pale lines that seem to float above the designs. This series offers a fun selection of delicate designs that can also endure hard professional use.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAY… “A convergence of high-style designs and safeguarding technology, like Nikko’s high-tech GP guard, bringing the right stuff to keep a bright future in gold and platinum decorated fine dinnerware.”

Lenox Corporation

Luna

www.lenox.com Luna is a limited-edition dinnerware set from the mind of designer Tim Carder. Taking inspiration from the beauty of vintage Lenox patterns, Tim created this exclusive nesting set to celebrate Lenox’s 130th birthday. This striking sculpture serves as a work of art at the center of the table. Hidden inside this microwave-and-dishwasher safe stoneware set are six bowls and two plates – all hand-decorated with luxe glazing and intricate carvings. You can take it apart piece by piece to reveal more beautiful glazes and artistic carvings as you get to the center. It’s a conversation centerpiece turned all-in-one dining set. Luna was created to establish a new culture of adventurous dining. Designer Tim Carder wanted to pay homage to Lenox’s beginning as a small pottery studio, where they created luxe gifts and custom gilded dinnerware. Luna became the perfect hybrid of both past and present. It addresses the customer’s need for a convenient, all-in-one dining set. It’s meant to work for every moment in your life; no matter how small or extravagant. The result is a carved sphere in an intriguing satin black glaze. As you pull each of the large bowls apart, you reveal two medium-sized bowls with a new carving and metallic glaze. The smallest, yet most special, bowls are revealed next. They come in the same black satin glaze with a starburst interior carving and draped in a copper glaze. Lastly, the two interior plates are at the center in a classic, milky white surface.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAY… “Hats off to a fantastic concept in dining and storage, while also making a design statement for the countertop.”

These include the Highball and Rocks glasses, the Fizz glass, Neat glass, the Nick and Nora glasses, and the Sour glass. Austrian glass innovator Riedel combines functional design with highquality glassmaking at their factory in Kufstein and the Bar Drink Specific Glassware collection is no different. Drinks specialist Zane Harris and Riedel developed each glass one by one, carefully taking into consideration the size, shape, volume and ice capacity. For the first time in cocktail glassware, these glasses have been designed to allow ice cubes to fall in the centre or side by side.

Ethnics

www.manifatturadivenezia.it The Ethnics collection presents the Ice Cooler, an the iconic piece created by Geminiano Cozzi Venezia in 1765, now reinterpreted by young designer Gianpiero Mastro, who depicts ancient masks of world culture. Starting with careful selection of colours and style according to the historic methods of Geminiano Cozzi, this collection creates a union between the ancient Venetian tradition of porcelain and the cultures and modernity of this increasingly global world, accompanying the Ice Cooler in a path that turns it into an object of desire and collectability. The traditional Ice Cooler, a porcelain masterpiece, was born 250 years ago thanks to the Venetian master Geminiano Cozzi. The aristocrat’s fruits was held above the upper lid and kept fresh thanks to the ice stored in the below container, while also acting as a table centrepiece. Young designer Gianpiero Mastro has reinterpreted this iconic object. Represented are six different masks: Paha Sapa -Black Hills (USA); Quirigue -Guatemala; Ulundu - South Africa; Pi-Atum -Egypt; Asuka-Kio -Japan and Quart-Hadast Cartagena, Spain. The mask represents a unique characteristic of the Venetian tradition, with its theatrical culture and Carnival transgressions. In the Ethnics collection, we wanted to expand our roots and reproduce a typical venetian object with a wider and international spirit, although always full of history and content. Designer Gianpiero Mastro, born in 1991, is a talented Italian product designer and artist, graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera, in Milan. His work is the fusion of street art and design, always looking for an expressive and creative language, to evoke emotions in people.

Melody Rose London

A Rake’s Progress

www.melodyrose.co.uk In March 2019 Melody Rose, was approached by the Sir John Soane’s Museum to create a range of fine china for the museum shop to coincide with their exhibition Hogarth: Place and Progress, opening October 2019. Inspired by William Hogarth’s The Rake’s Progress, the series of eight paintings created in 1734 tell the story of Tom Rakewell, a young man who follows a path of vice and self destruction after inheriting a fortune from his miserly father, finally ending up deranged and penniless in Bedlam, after his failure to establish himself in society. To coincide with the October 2019 exhibition Hogarth: Place and Progress, The Sir John Soane’s Museum approached Melody Rose to collaborate on a range of tableware. For the project Melody Rose was given access to the imagery of the eight paintings that make up William Hogarth’s (in)famous paintings 'A Rake’s Progress’. Four of the eight paintings were selected for the project, where the story plays out across handcrafted fine bone china medium sized plates (22.5cm) and a teacup and saucer all finished with a luxurious and durable 22kt burnished gold. The collection includes four medium sized 23cm plates and an elegant teacup and saucer. Sambonet Paderno Industrie Spa

Madame

www.sambonet.com Reminiscent of the mood and prosperity of 18th-century French salons, Madame - the charming collection of footed bowls and trays by Sambonet - comes into being. Light, elegant and a bit mischievous, like the noblewomen of Marie Antoinette’s court, this footed serveware features contrasting volumes and heights and unique colours. Centro Stile Sambonet’s excellence in processing and finishing stainless steel comes together with the contoured lines of the fine resin bases, also distinguished by the nuances of stone and ornamental mineral. Fine craftsmanship and innovation play with the effect of different materials and reflections. The chromatic subtlety of pink onyx, white marble, jade and the intensity of lapis lazuli, malachite and black marble have been skilfully matched with the reflecting Mirror, Gold, Rum and Parfait Amour finishes. Of course, alongside the innovative PVD colour coating, they included a fine silverplated option for fans of this noble material. Each item is unique, none of them are exactly the same and together they all form a wide range of footed serveware - eight bowls and eight trays. Aristocratic in shape, the former is reminiscent of the wide, showy panniers or side hooped dresses with their stiff, tight-fitting bodices. On the other hand, the footed trays look a bit like special stages set to showcase tasty cakes, refined flower arrangements or even to offer a precious gift to a special person. Sophisticated and openly out of the ordinary, Madame will stand out in any part of the home.

WMF Group GmbH

Motion Vacuum Flask www.wmf.com

This vacuum flask series merges minimalism with functionality. The flasks feature a smooth, polished Cromargan 18/10 stainless steel metal surface, which, in some models, is coated with durable resin. The timeless design reflects the WMF brands highest quality standards and was created by the WMF Design Team. With an increasing part of the population spending more time on their daily commute, insulation products have made a strong comeback, now also becoming accessory items that have to deliver a high level of design quality. As part of the Motion line, the WMF Motion vacuum flasks are based on the line’s approach of outstanding functionality in a minimalistic shape. Only metal is visible while the doublewalled stainless cup and a seamless body are part of a concept that seeks to eliminate all potential “dirt traps”. The clip-on cup, a push-to-open stopper and a spout that allows pouring in any direction deliver on the idea that a simple object should be easy to interact with – and that’s why the flask can go in the dishwasher, too. The trademark Motion thumb mold ensures secure holding even when wearing gloves and the flask can take a drop on concrete without losing its insulating properties – both relevant features, even for the urban dweller.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAY… “The WMF Motion vacuum flask, with its sleek silhouette available in three sizes — each offered in chic metallic or matt black finishes – would look just as stylish and be just as apt (in the one liter size) for serving steaming hot coffee or toddies to guests at home as it would for fashionably toting a cuppa to go. This duality gives it a winning combination of well-designed functionality and aesthetics, plus, it is described as practically indestructible.” 66 TABLEWARE INTERNATIONAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE 2020

Cabinet Of Curiosities Gilded Collection www.artelglass.com

Designed by Věra Mauricová, the inspiration for the collection is cabinets of curiosity from the Renaissance through to the Victorian Era. The collection is mouthblown with lead-free glass along with being handengraved, and hand-gilded with gold and platinum. From the early Renaissance through to the Victorian era, a popular pastime for aristocrats and scholars throughout Europe was to create and display collections of rare, valuable, or unusual objects in elaborate cabinets of curiosities. Also called wonderrooms or Wunderkammer, these precursors to the modern museum featured taxidermy, skins, skeletons, and other exotic natural artefacts, and were designed to enthral and inform viewers by exposing them to the wonders and oddities of the natural world. Artěl celebrates this tradition with Cabinet Of Curiosities Gilded collection, comprised of six different natural history-themed motifs – Bat, Beetle, Butterfly, Skull, Snake And Spider. Each mouth-blown glass in the collection features an exquisitely hand-engraved and hand-gilded image, executed with a meticulous level of detail reminiscent of 18th & 19th century zoology illustrations, and available either individual or as a set of six glasses (sets include one glass with each design).

WHAT THE JUDGES SAY… “The gigantic porcelain masterpiece is a real tour-deforce of innovation; its creation almost reached the technological limits of manufactural porcelain production. The Turtle of Eternity by Herend in the shape of an exclusive, giant dragon turtle with phenomenal decoration. Exceptional craftsmanship and incredible attention to detail.”

Herend Porcelain Manufactory Ltd

Turtle of Eternity www.herend.com

The Turtle of Eternity was created by designer Erika ÉlesVarga with Herend explaining its creation required a record number of working hours of design, preparation, gypsum and of course, expert hands. The gigantic porcelain masterpiece is a real tourde-force of innovation, its creation almost reached the technological limits of manufactural porcelain production. The designer created this pattern because she felt it was important to connect the terrestrial sphere (turtle) and the celestial sphere (cranes). She had a dream, and dreams in Herend often have a way of coming to life – in this case in the shape of an exclusive, giant dragon turtle with phenomenal decoration. The dragon-headed turtle is a symbol with multiple meanings. Dragons symbolise strength and good luck, and turtles represent long life, wisdom and security with its armor. Its specialty is that while the figurine is bound to the terrestrial sphere, its decoration is connected to the air since it portrays the crane as its main motif. The crane is associated with luck, good blessing and the fulfilment of one’s desires. Cranes can also be connected with family values, and honour, loyalty and peace. The turtle’s strong shell means protection and support for earth, which is originated from the gods.

KAHLA/Thüringen Porzellan GmbH

Homestyle Handmade www.kahlaporzellan.com The new porcelain concept Homestyle by Kahla invites a feeling of comfort and bliss. Thanks to its harmonious shapes and carefully coordinated colours, the porcelain – hand-glazed with much attention to detail – creates an atmosphere of authenticity, tradition and cosiness. The secret behind the cosy, relaxed ambiance created by Homestyle are glazes in a harmonious colour scheme that are artfully applied by hand. Crystalline, vibrant colour tones meet warm, earthy pigments. Atlantic Blue joins Desert Sand and Siena Red to create a play of colours reminiscent of the four elements of nature. The result - fire and earth, water and air - mingle at the table in ever new combinations, which, despite their vivid contrasts, are pleasing to the eye. The deliberately chosen simple shapes of the articles accentuate the carefully coordinated glazes. The focus of the ensemble is a multi-purpose bowl where under the title “Colours of nature” all three colours come together. As a trendy breakfast bowl, Buddha bowl or poké bowl, it can be filled with all kinds of ingredients for cereal, salads, soups or curry dishes. Its shallow counterpart is a generously sized oval platter suitable for many occasions, from fish platters to cheeseboards. In this piece as well, all three glazes are combined to create a flowing interplay of colours.

Gryphus

www.vistaalegre.com A sculptural vase with an enormous visual impact, Gryphus recreates the monster of pre-Greek antiquity with a lion’s body and an eagle’s head, in a stylised and dynamic interpretation. Two majestic creatures, of the air and of the earth, in a timeless set, which could equally have originated in a distant past, in contemporary times or in an indefinite future. The gold used in the creature’s nests is symbolized by matte gold filaments, combined with tracery in relief with a simple and elegant geometry. Like the griffin, this piece is associated with the notions of art and intelligence that dominated classical antiquity.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAY… “Art meets function in Vista Alegre Portugal’s Gryphus collection. This storytelling antiquity collection pays homage to the prestige achieved by the brand in the 19th century. The gift set is an effective accessory for the Zieher decanters Eddy and Star and includes - besides the ring which is made of matt black silicone - the light, remote control and the charger. LED light and remote control offer various functions such as adjustable brightness, seven different colours and various colour changing functions. This new version of the basic ring for the Eddy and Star decanter offers the chance to put served wine in the spotlight. The rechargeable Zieher LED light fits exactly into the cavity at the bottom part of the ring and thus can put the served wine in the decanter into the limelight. In the beginning the illumination effect in the filled decanter can be very unobstrusive when serving strongly pigmented red wine. But at a decreasing level the play of light and colours becomes more and more intense in an exciting way.

HOSPITALITY DINNERWARE Costa Nova

Nótos

costanova.pt Carsten Gollnick took his inspiration for this ceramic fine stoneware design from the remarkable color contrasts and structures of the Portuguese Atlantic coast. Straight lines, pure shapes and flowing, softly undulating surfaces meet matte, rough, sandy structures. The aesthetic world of the Portuguese Atlantic beach, the border between water and land – between water and windows – is his source of inspiration. The German designer has developed a collection of tableware perfect not only for presenting dishes with this coastal theme but also for the presentation of gastronomic experiences of various cuisines and cultures. Since 1997 Carsten Gollnick has been working successfully on the aesthetic improvement of object culture. More than 80 international design awards, long-term collaboration with a range of companies, as well as, museum pieces acknowledge his attitude to design. Nótos is a complete, vital hotelware programme which is not just perfect for presenting seafood and coastal style food. Open fire concepts, serving trays and Asian food bowls complement each other to create a highly professional but also very casually interpreted collection. Traditional material concepts, sustainably produced in Portugal, from metal, beech wood and cork round off the theme. Inspired by natural landscapes, Nótos (like any other fine stoneware collection from Costa Nova) is made from the best natural resources in Portugal and produced with respect for nature reusable and recyclable.

AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE

WHAT THE JUDGES SAY… “I like this service for the sophisticated storytelling decorations but also for the arrangement and creative layout of the decor on the service pieces and the luxurious, subtle mix of reds and gold. Quality and elegance in the service of a clever ethnic combination between modernity and tradition.”

NIKKO COMPANY

Novel Dragon

www.nikko-tabletop.jp This modern-ethnic series combines geometric shapes derived from classic Asian patterns of good fortune for a bold yet detailed look. Nikko offers Made in Japan products manufactured completely at their own factory, from the processing of raw materials to the finishing of the products. With exceptional technology, Nikko fine bone china features a unique whiteness, which utilizes about 50 per cent bone ash to create a strong and luminous dinnerware. The deep red hue, together with shimmering delicate gold decorations, contrast with the glassy whiteness of the china to create a beautiful luxurious appearance. This series is adorned with many motifs considered to bring good fortune in Asia. The dragon symbolises “strength” and “good luck,” the peony “prosperity”

and “peace,” and the clouds “mystical” and “fruitful.” Together, they are powerful. Nikko’s advanced decalcomania technologies are what make these delicate motifs so expressive. The deep red color is cadmium-free and lead-free, making them very safe. The white convex markings are finished in both matte and glossy touches to add a sophisticated depth to the texture. The gold decorations are both beautiful and durable thanks to polarized mica and GP guard, Nikko’s original gold and platinum decoration technology. They shimmer when seen from different angles, giving more glamour to the tabletop. “GP guard” is 400-times stronger against friction and five times stronger against dish washing than conventional decorations (according to Nikko, February 2017).

Utopia Tableware Ltd

Nude Stem Zero with Ion Shield wine glass www.utopia-tableware.com

WHAT THE JUDGES SAY… “A modern twist on sommelier glasses.”

86 TABLEWARE INTERNATIONAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE 2020

Fine restaurants love fine wine glasses. But they hate breakages. This was the inspiration behind the Nude Stem Zero with Ion Shield wine glass range. This simple, elegant and extremely light, lead-free crystal wine glass combines premium style and craftsmanship with strength due to the Ion Shield coating, which makes it twice as strong as other fine stemware of similar thinness. Stem Zero fulfils the demand for fine wine glasses that allow an appreciation of the wine without excessive breakages on the part of both staff and customers. The Stem Zero ultra-light wine glasses from Nude Glassware and distributed through Utopia Tableware are available in a range of sizes for red wines, white wines, or champagnes. To ensure they can stand up to staff and customer handling, the glass has been strengthened with a new Ion Shield coating adding increased strength and toughness. So how is it done? The glass is strengthened using a special ‘surface modification technology’, based on an ion-exchange process. Larger ions are incorporated into the glass surface structure, replacing the smaller ions, which cause the strains, thus increasing the strength of the glass. This process makes the Stem Zero made with the new Ion Shield technology the toughest, yet finest lead-free crystal glass.
