Message from the Editor www.gifts-today.co.uk

I

t’s summer, which means show season is just around the corner! Fresh from a high old time at Harrogate Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival, where the team at Lema Media produced the Daily News for the show (review on page 18), I’ve spent the past few weeks preparing these pages in readiness for Autumn Fair. The comprehensive preview starts on page 24 and runs over 60+ pages. So much newness for you to discover! I had an exclusive chat with the show’s regional director Julie Driscoll about the show’s revamp for this edition, and what these exciting changes will mean for exhibitors and visitors alike. ‘This is a transformational moment for Autumn Fair, and we’re really excited to be unveiling the new re-edit to visitors,’ she said. I, for one, am really looking forward to heading up to the NEC to see the changes in action. Then, of course there’s the fab Top Drawer to look forward to and, in this issue, event director Alejandra Campos tells us about the forthcoming highlights. You can read more about it on page 86. I love our cover this issue, and I recommend you head over to page 22 to learn what’s new at Village Candle. They’re such a lovely company and have a range of high quality product available to suit every customer. I’ve been getting great feedback from readers about our Retailers’ Panel and, it’s with these positive comments in mind, I decided to create a bumper edition of this popular feature. Retailers are so important to us here at Gifts Today and it’s lovely to have the opportunity to

Instagram: @giftstodaysally tell the stories of so many great businesses. It starts over on page 58. Enjoy! In addition to news and views, this issue is also packed with special features about some of the most exciting companies and brands out there – both established and new. We had a chat to the amazing Gisela Graham who, I discovered, set up her company 30 years ago with a borrowed £27! (page 12). We also talk to the founder of Dofta home fragrance on page 93, to Lauren Shipman from Posh Paws about the company’s new Chic & Love Swarovski range on page 90, and to many more. It’s been great fun putting together this issue and I hope you enjoy reading it. With three years editing Gifts Today under my belt, I’m really looking forward to heading out to the shows to catch up with as many of you as possible. Here’s to a profitable month.

The views of the contributors expressed in this journal are not necessarily those of the publisher. Comments, letters and criticism are welcome.

GT PROFILE: Gisela Graham

‘Having to come up with new ideas keeps me on my toes’ Having founded her business more than 30 years ago, the brilliant Gisela Graham still finds plenty to inspire her new designs each year. Gifts Today discovers more…

F

rom small beginnings Gisela Graham has built up one of Europe’s foremost Christmas companies, presenting hundreds of unique designs each year that have a hint of the Germany of her birth. Each year Gisela also turns her creative flair to designing Easter decorations - the 2020 collection, that she’s just launched, is due for delivery next January. She’s also brought out new additions to her increasingly prominent collection of pretty things for the home and garden. Born in Germany and educated at Berlin University, Gisela founded her business more than 30 years ago with a borrowed £27, working from her kitchen table when her children were small. She recalls ferrying components and paint to outworkers around London, in a 2CV with a child in the back. Terence Conran and Harrods were among her first customers. Gisela, as Creative Director, takes personal charge of a talented in-house team of designers at her office, studio and spectacular showroom, set around a converted stable-yard in South London. She’s involved in the design and selection of every one of a 4500-product inventory. ‘We’re expected to come up with new ideas every single year, ‘ says Gisela, ‘a bit like the

fashion industry. So I’m a bundle of nerves before the main trade fairs in January and February - will they like what we’ve got this year? It is a strain and of course I make it more difficult for myself with developing as many as 15 or 16 new themes each year for Christmas. But the adrenalin and worrying about it is what keeps me on my toes!’ Gisela and her team have been working on Christmas 2020 since early this year, taking inspiration from a wide spectrum including galleries, museums, books and fond childhood memories. Ballet, opera and travel are also areas that Gisela looks to for ideas. ‘I’m always on the go and on the lookout for fresh inspiration!’ she tells Gifts Today.

Did you know? Gisela started her business more than 30 years ago with a borrowed £27!

The current 2019 Christmas collection comprises 16 beautifully designed and curated ranges; spanning the Canals of Venice, the kitchens of Scandinavia and the British woodland – and was widely acclaimed when launched last January, with many of her customers now starting to receive their orders ready for the autumn selling season. The little silver ‘Gisela Graham’ tag that all her products carry is now widely known by consumers across the UK and it’s to be found in good stores across Europe, and further afield in the Middle East, in North America and Australasia, and even in Asia - Japan, Hong Kong and Kazakhstan. Gisela Graham is credited with introducing the German style of decorating the home for Easter over here, which has really caught on. She continues to be market leader of this growing seasonal market. Her 2020 Spring/Easter collection, launched a month ago, has won plaudits: six distinct themes, spanning a broad spectrum of tastes and demographics, comprising eggs, fillable and decorative, door wreaths, chicks, hens, rabbits, and gifts – most are quite appropriate for sale throughout the summer. Easter is a natural of the gift trade: plenty of scope for shop window/instore displays leading up to the holiday weekend. 2020 Collections: ‘Spring Farm’ features (surprise!) cute farm animals. ‘Spring Into Summer’ offers blossoms and the fruit they promise, in pretty pastels. ‘Victorian Easter’ takes nostalgia un-seriously, while ‘Dazzling Easter’ in bright primaries, and the ultra-cute felt creatures of ‘Craft-y Easter’ with felt creatures, will have strong kid appeal. Finally, ‘Easter Buzz’ picks up charmingly on the current bee-craze Gisela also commends the just released, newest extensions to her strongly advancing hugely successful, 1650-SKU everyday gift range. ‘Emporium’ is rich and exotic in jewel colours, with pickup designer fashion gifts and boxed candles. ‘Desert Blooms’ has a feminine slant - positively pastel florals with a distinctive difference. Plus, further extensions to fast- selling gifts for gardeners, fruity ceramics, faux succulents, mugs and candles: just in time for Christmas. To contact Gisela Graham London, call the sales team on 020-7708 4956 for a showroom visit or a salesperson to call.

All new for RHS at BLE The Royal Horticultural Society is celebrating its return to BLE after a five-year absence with a striking affirmation of its unique strengths as a licensing partner and a brand. Visitors to stand B366 can see multiple design assets, including a new RHS style guide for children’s products and amazing new artwork, as well as the astonishing RHS Lindley Collections art that has made the RHS one of the most resource-rich partners in heritage licensing today. The RHS is expanding into licensed products specifically for children. Among the main target categories will be toys, games, apparel and tools for young gardeners to use. Also on the way is a fabulous collection of botanical artwork, exclusive to the RHS and only available for licensees. This includes a stunning artwork collection by the legendary botanical illustrator Pieter van Kouwenhoorn dating from the early 1600s, and lovely watercolours by Sydenham Teast Edwards, who founded the influential 19th century publication The Botanical Register. Cathy Snow, RHS Licensing Manager, says: ‘The return of the RHS to BLE could not be better timed. Our already strong offering to licensees is being further enhanced and we are looking to enter new categories and markets.’

Exhibition News Discover Christmas trends at Christmasworld Christmasworld really is about seasonal decoration at its best. The next show will run 24-28 January 2020 in Frankfurt am Main. Held annually, it presents the latest products and trends for all festivities of the year and provides innovative concept ideas for decorating large-scale and outdoor areas for the wholesale and retail trades, shopping centres, DIY markets and the green sector. Christmasworld is characterised by the complete spectrum of festive decorations while a wide-ranging complementary programme with Trend Show, special exhibitions, events and expert lectures is a valuable and informative source of supplementary inspiration for everyday business life in the sector. The 2019 event was attended by 1085 exhibitors from 44 countries and over 45,300 visitors from 123 countries. Very soon, of course, retailers will be revealing the trends for Christmas 2019, many of which were inspired by January 2019’s show. The four key trends at this year’s show were identified by Stilbüro bora. herke.palmisano as follows:

Sweet Traditions

Surface textures reminiscent of icing and sugar pearls, with handwritten messages and hand-drawn images. Naïve motifs and also Norwegian patterns are equally indicative of this style, as are fresh colours such as peach, red and berry tones.

Luminous Celebrations

Elegant, glowing and dark shades with intense colourings and shimmering metallic colours, iridescent surfaces, sequins, sparkly discs, ultraglossy finishes and lurex effects, as well as velvet and feathers conjure up some glamorous Christmas decorations. Book ahead for January 2020’s edition of the show and be first to discover what trends will be important next year. christmasworld.messefrankfurt.com

Tender Festivities A calm and peaceful trend. Central features are unusual shapes and surfaces, combined with matte finishes, stone effects, crushed, creased or pleated surfaces and high-quality paper.

Essential Ceremonies

Naturalness and modernity, combined with raw, rustic features are the distinguishing characteristics of a trend that finds expression in raw, untreated surfaces and warm, burnt tones.

Not just for Christmas… For any company involved in festive products – or gift ranges which tend to have prominence at Christmas – the key UK trade show to target key buyers is Harrogate Christmas & Gift, 12 -15 January 2020. Well worth a visit. This show has certainly set itself firmly on the map as the UK’s most prominent Christmas trading event in recent years, with the 2019 show reporting another increase in visitor numbers for the seventh consecutive year. Retailers and buyers attending made it clear that they are planning a bumper 2019 festive season with many exhibitors reporting a record number of orders taken. Piers Croke of Gisela Graham said: ‘We had an excellent show, picking up new customers and seeing just about every regular customer we had hoped to see and took some good orders. We had expected a low-key atmosphere bearing in mind the general Brexit-related uncertainty but were agreeably surprised that there was quite a buzz in the air.’ Bill Cornelius of Playwrite Group, which produces novelty toys and gifts that are particularly suitable for Santa’s grottos and pocket money ranges, added: ‘For us, Harrogate Christmas & Gift is becoming an ever more important event and our sales team always looks forward to the show.’ Simon Anslow, show organiser, comments: ‘We are delighted Harrogate Christmas & Gift has taken such a huge upturn in participation in recent years. The show has fast become a favourite with garden centre and tourist attraction buyers looking for festive decorations as well as year-round gift ranges and the diversity of their requirements is attracting exhibitors with a huge array of products. As well as everything you would expect to see for Christmas, ranges include garden products, food and confectionery, greetings cards and gifts for the entire year. In fact there are very few products, that don’t sell well at the show.’ Bookings are now open for Harrogate Christmas & Gift 2020 – for more information about exhibiting and visiting, head to harrogatefair.com

Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival

Summer sensation The Daily News at Harrogate Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival in July was produced by the team at Lema Media, publishers of Gifts Today and Greetings Today. We take a look back at just a few of the highlights…

Happy anniversary

Many of the gift industry’s leading names celebrated big birthdays at the show. Joe Davies and Gibsons turned 100, Alexander Thurlow became 70, Carrie Elspeth turned 20 and Langs marked their 70th.

Getting inspired

The ShopTalk stage had a stellar line-up this year, with Piers Linney, Pearl Lowe, Rosie Fortescue and Sophie Conran headlining and sharing their expertise with visitors

Piers Linney

Pearl Lowe

t had been three decades since former Dragon Piers Linney visited Home & Gift. ‘I came with my mum Norma in the Eighties to buy for Candella, the accessories shop she owned in Bolton,’ he told the Daily News. ‘I also sold Stoneglow candles mail order, so I’ve got form in gift!’ He revealed a great understanding of the gift market, saying the three essential criteria are differentiation, personalisation and authenticity. And he wants to encourage gift retailers to embrace technology. ‘I’m here to tell people not to be afraid of it,’ he said.

earl was there to talk about finding your niche and building your brand. ‘Everything I’ve designed is simply because I couldn’t find it in the shops. This my first time at the show and I can’t believe I haven’t been before – it’s incredible.’ ‘I believe that finding your niche is about always being true to what you love,’ said Pearl Lowe, interior and fashion designer, in conversation with Karolina Barnes, editor of Estila magazine. ‘Business has got to be fun and bring you joy.’

I ‘Home & Gift truly is a show like no other, with an atmosphere and spirit that is entirely unique for a trade event. It was a thrill to see so many enjoying our enhanced catering offer, relaxing lounge areas, live music and ShopTalk seminar programme. I look forward to welcoming you back to Harrogate next year for our 60th anniversary, where we will have even more in store for you’

Louise Morris, show director 18 Gifts Today

P

Sophie Conran

Rosie Fortescue

he interior designer and author visited the show to give a talk called ‘Confidence in Colour’ and remembered visiting the show 25 years ago when she was a junior buyer for the Conran Shop. She talked about how colour can ‘wake us up’ and have an effect on how we’re feeling. ‘It can be very invigorating or very relaxing,’ she said.

ade In Chelsea star, jewellery designer and lifestyle blogger Rosie Fortescue talked about how brands and businesses can master their marketing and digital strategy. ‘I love Instagram and it’s a great way to engage with my audience,’ she told the Daily News. ‘You can never have enough content for social media and your website. I’m forever taking lifestyle images – that’s what people really like to see.’

Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival

Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival More news from the show…

All for charity

Ubiety made its first appearance at the show. It’s a new range produced with master perfumer Richard Howard, known for the Cowshed Spa at Babington House in Somerset, with all profits going to Dorothy House Hospice near Bath. ‘Richard came to us last year because he’d had people cared for in hospices and wanted to put something back,’ says Anna Hall, product development manager. ‘The original idea was to create products for use in the hospice, but this soon evolved into our retail range of bodycare and home fragrance products.’ The name ‘Ubiety’ means ‘being grounded in the moment.’ Anna is pictured (left), with Cathy Briggs who makes the candles containing Richard’s fragrances

Sunday Sundowners

Exhibitors and visitors mingled after the show on Sunday at the Sunday Sundowners, in the grounds of the newly-refurbished Majestic

This is our very first trade show after almost six years of trading. We’ve had a great first day, and everyone was so friendly,’ said Lauren Dorling, director, Solesmith (left) and marketing executive Ali Wilson.

The show has been really good and I’m feeling quite inspired. Retail is suffering a little, but with the great turnout it gives me confidence that there is still a strong retail industry out there. The gifting industry is one of the biggest saviours of retail,’ said Sarah Sian, senior beauty editor, Debenhams, pictured left with mum and sister 20 Gifts Today

Retailers said… Buyers were out in force at Home & Gift. We caught up with a few of them to see what they’d discovered at the show

This is my second year – it’s definitely worth the long journey from Devon. I really enjoy seeing the new ranges and it’s always great to catch up with clients and meet new ones. We’ve placed a couple of orders already at the show. We’re expanding into greeting cards, so DP5 has been the perfect hall for us. Redback Cards, Ecochic and Bomb Cosmetics have all really impressed today.’ Bradley Trevelyan, Raven Lifestyle, Taverstock

We love the show. It’s my favourite show to attend, as it has a lovely atmosphere – you’re guaranteed a good day. The shop has been going 15 years and we’ve been coming to Home and Gift for about 10 years. It doesn’t feel like an intense shopping spree. We have more time and there’s no pressure. Today we’ve managed to find a few new suppliers.’ Suzie McSwiggan, Gingerbread Dreams in Duntocher, Scotland (right) with daughter Holly

We’ve been coming to Home & Gift for seven years, buying for our Post Office in Leek. There’s so much variety and we always pick up unique and original gifts. So far, we’ve bought some gorgeous jewellery boxes, some watches and scarves.’ Christine and Michael Birch, Leek Post Office, Staffordshire

This is our first time here. In particular, we’re looking for soaps, candles and perfumes for the salon for the Christmas gifting period. We really want to support companies that make their products in England. We have found a few bigger gift companies with collections including nail files and lots of trinkets, with so many different designs within one company.’ Amy Biggin (left) and mum Jane, The Nail and Beauty Studio, Dromfield, Sheffield

New show sectors Taste, Craft and DesignNow joined the line-up, offering an exciting new edit in these sectors

There was a whole host of mouth-watering treats in Taste, offering giftable food and drink products from both emerging and well-known food and drink brands. Craft was all about celebrating craftsmanship and new designers, and was the perfect place to discover unique pieces directly from artists, makers and craftspeople from the UK and around the world. And Design-Now offered a beautiful selection of design-led products from leading UK brands and innovative new names.

s one of the largest candle brands in the world, the relaunch of Village Candle in the UK market has allowed the company to build long-lasting relationships with their customers, old and new. So what sets Village Candle apart in this competitive UK market? Their approach to the UK market is simple; placing the customer at the heart of everything they do. Village Candle offers a quality product with a point of difference in providing the best possible customer service and support by understanding what their customers want. Village Candle use a blend of the highest quality food grade paraffin wax and two hand-trimmed cotton wicks, that provide an even and clean burn, and strong fragrance throw. The burn time is long and consistent with up to 170 hours for the large jar - approximately 40 hours longer than other candle jars of the same size on the market. They are confident that once a customer burns a Village Candle, they are unlikely to burn another candle brand again. You’ll experience mood-evoking, true-to-life fragrances throughout their breadth of products and collections. The classic two-wick traditions jar has received a fresh look with a modern metal lid. Their seasonal fragrances take inspiration from global trends – new for autumn/winter 2019 are limited edition fragrances such as Glam Apple, Cypress & Iced Currant, and Chalet Latte.

With this in mind, Village Candle know it’s important to incorporate fresh and exciting new collections for their customers. These fragrances will have you looking forward to carving pumpkins, autumn treats, and the nostalgia of a crisp, moonlit Halloween night. Suzanne Chapman, UK Country Manager says: ‘Although a short selling window, the Halloween market is growing here in the UK, with families not only trick or treating, but decorating their homes and hosting haunted house parties!’ 22 Gifts Today

Autumn Fair

‘Essential, vibrant and forwardthinking’ This is how the new Regional Director of Spring and Autumn Fairs describes the revamped Autumn Fair, due to open its doors on the first of this month. Editor Sally Norton had an exclusive chat with Julie Driscoll about what the exciting changes will mean for exhibitors and visitors alike.

A

little bit about you, Julie, ahead of your first Autumn Fair as Regional Director. You’ve worked in events, particularly fashion, for the last 10 years – how did this role come about? Previous to overseeing Spring and Autumn Fair, I was the managing director of ITE Exhibitions’ Fashion Portfolio. Heading up Spring and Autumn Fair comes with its own unique set of challenges and

24 Gifts Today

opportunities, so naturally, I was really excited to take on the role. There’s a lot of talk in our industry about the re-edit and repositioning of Autumn Fair, following its acquisition by ITE Group plc. This will be unveiled in September - what’s the overall first impression you’d like to make for visitors and exhibitors? This is a transformational moment for Autumn Fair, and we’re really excited to be unveiling the new reedit to visitors. Following the recent acquisition, we’ve invested heavily in Autumn Fair to ensure that we’re consistently delivering for both exhibitors and visitors. The re-edit has completely overhauled the show layout – moving it into the Atrium at the NEC – as well as revamping the show sectors to make it much easier for buyers to source complementary products and for exhibitors to see greater visitor footfall at their stands. Ultimately it’s all about facilitating more connections and more deals, as well as generating more profit for the sector.

What do you feel the new direction will improve for exhibitors at the show? With show sectors having been simplified and combined, we’ve been able to create all-new sourcing and exhibiting destinations for buyers and suppliers. All this will mean that exhibitors can expect a more streamlined thoroughfare and greater exposure to more high profile and receptive retailers than ever before. We’re also introducing new services to help assist visitors in finding the supplier that’s right for them. So from an exhibitor perspective, we’ll be matching them up with the buyers that are the most likely to want to place essential orders at the show. And for visitors? Autumn Fair has always been about ensuring that visitors are able to stay ahead of the curve and find the products that will continue to drive sales deep into the Christmas period and well beyond. This year with the show reedit we’ve focused on enabling better cross-buying opportunities, particularly in the all-new Gift area, that will bring together both contemporary and traditional gift edits into what will be the UK’s largest gifting showcase.

The 12 exhibitors to Autumn Fair’s #SBS showcase have been announced. Why do you think this initiative is so important? In partnering with Theo Paphitis’ #SBS we’re helping some the most exciting new suppliers in the sector to gain a foothold at the season’s most important opportunity to reach the biggest and most influential retailers. Each of the shortlisted businesses should be incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved. And what do you think the choice of winners reveals about the gift industry? They’re an exceptional cohort of businesses that reflect the impressive current state of entrepreneurialism in the retail sector. With new brands like Ascent, Beeutiful and Sandwick Bay Candles being

Also, we hear every year from our buyers and suppliers that they value face-to-face meetings above anything else – it remains crucial to building and maintaining all-important buying relationships. Online just can’t offer that.

selected for the platform, it well and truly demonstrates the importance of natural and ethical self-care products in the current market. But of course, it’s not all about beauty and wellbeing – we have some amazing new exhibitors in the likes of Bottled Baking co. and Our Little Globe, who along with seven other inspirational and unique new brands will be embodying Theo Paphitis’ entrepreneurial spirit at Autumn Fair. Why are big trade fairs still relevant in these digital days? More so than ever, social media and e-commerce gives buyers everything they need at their fingertips, but searching online for your next sales hit can often be a rudderless and time-consuming process. Trade shows like Autumn Fair offer a curated experience and do so much of the hard work for buyers.

And why, in particular, is Autumn Fair so important to gift buyers/exhibitors? Autumn Fair is the UK’s biggest gifting and homewares marketplace and it’s only set to get bigger for 2019. It’s been the centrepiece of gifting retailers’ and suppliers’ calendars for nearly three decades. In that time, it has helped drive countless deals and forged longlasting relationships between retail’s boldest buyers and suppliers. Many gifting buyers come back year-onyear to renew orders and see what their most dependable suppliers can bring to the table. In that sense it’s always helped to drive the industry forward and ensured that it embraces new trends and innovations. Is there a specific reason you have chosen now to launch a new international sourcing zone at the show? What can visitors expect to find there? We’ve recognised the growing demand within the retail space for

quality and relevant international products. At the same time however, we understand that retailers may not have the time or resources to commit to costly foreign sourcing trips to bring the best the world has to offer back to the UK market. This is why we’ve brought international sourcing opportunities to their doorstep. Those who have previously felt that the world’s most competitive, high quality and dedicated suppliers have been out of reach can now forge significant new supplier relationships. Not only that, but we’ll be pushing to attract more international retailers to buy from the UK-based suppliers that are the foundation of our show. Throughout the event, visitors can also expect to be able to draw inspiration from not only the plethora of foreign goods on offer but also our all-new Sourcing trend installation and theatre. Have you given specific advice to international exhibitors about the UK market? We’ve gone to great lengths to ensure that we share the latest trend intelligence for international vendors to ensure that they’re bringing the most relevant products for the UK market. For the Sourcing showcase we’ve researched and hand selected the top 30 Homeware, Kitchenware, Toys, and Textiles manufacturers across the globe, as well as the relevant associations who represent them. Across all of our international offices and agent network, the importance of the UK retail market has been presented to each association in great detail.

Identifying the right trends is more important than ever in these uncertain times leading up to Brexit. What is there on offer in your Sourcing Theatre? The Sourcing Theatre will host talks from well-known industry experts on supply chain management, partnerships, procurement, visual merchandising and more, allowing professional buyers to get one-step ahead of market competitors. How did you go about choosing the speakers/companies giving advice at the show? Our focus on speakers this year has been to embrace more voices from retailers and thereby get the view from the boots on the ground and those who are truly driving change and innovation in the sector. Finally, how would you describe the new look Autumn Fair in three words? Essential. Vibrant. Forward-thinking.

Class act Parlane International

The Summerhouse, Hall 20, stand F60-G61

Gifts Today caught up with sales manager Chris Lewis ahead of the show to learn more about the company and see what they have in store for visitors Chris, can you tell us about Parlane? Parlane has been supplying decorative accessories to the market for nearly 50 years. We are synonymous with quality, contemporary products that are often designed in-house and skilfully handcrafted from natural materials. We aim to inspire retailers with a product catalogue that offers a point of difference in the market at competitive prices. We work with a variety of customers; from small independent florists, farmshops or gift & interiors shops to larger multiples. We also supply garden centres, interior designers, furniture showrooms, hotels and restaurants amongst others. We deliver an exceptional customer service experience, whether you visit us at one of our showrooms, liaise with our friendly sales team via telephone or visit us at a show.

Why have you made the decision to return to Autumn Fair this year? We last had a stand at the Autumn Fair 13 years ago and can’t wait to be back there showing off our latest autumn/winter collection. We will be occupying a huge stand enabling us to take most of our products along and thus creating a powerful visual impact.

What are the highlights of what you’re showing this year? The collection offers a huge variety of product accessories and furniture and is divided into various categories; Christmas, Living, Potting Shed, Pantry and Flora. Our latest collection provides products made from natural materials, striking metallic finishes, bold organic shapes, contrasting soft faux fur and feathers, and art deco influences. We will also have the most incredible selection and display of faux flowers and plants - these help to dress the stand and bring it alive. The Autumn Fair provides an excellent platform for buyers to select their seasonal decorations and giftware in one place and make sure they’re in time for the Christmas trading period in store. We invite customers to come and browse over a glass of Champagne – there’ll be lots to see!

Any personal favourites? We’re partial to a pothanger - one of our most popular products. For the 2019 Christmas season, we designed and produced the cutest angel, fairy, elf and Santa pothangers to decorate vases and indoor flowerpots.

Special deals/offers at the show? We are currently clearing stock ahead of a warehouse move so there will be hundreds of products to choose from with up to 50% discount and we will have a Warehouse Clearance brochure available to take away with the full range of sale items.

Company plans for the future? Each season we introduce hundreds of new products to keep the collection fresh and exciting for customers. A breath of fresh air

Something Different Wholesale Hall 7, stand C60-D61 Welsh giftware importer Something Different Wholesale has recently launched a collection of 10 new scented air fresheners as part of an expansion of their fragrance offering. Each of the new air fresheners sits within several proven popular collections, offering something to suit everyone. Some of the designs include a vanilla scented skull, candyfloss unicorn and a campervan with a woodland fragrance. Popularly used for adding fragrance to vehicle interiors, these new arrivals will give retailers the opportunity to grow their sales from this mass market that includes a reported 38.4 million registered on the road vehicles at the end of December 2018 in Great Britain alone. With a low RRP price the air fresheners are ideal spontaneous but also justifiable purchases. RETAILERS’ PANEL In our five-page special, the latest members of our Panel – key gift shop owners around the UK – introduce their brilliant businesses, talk about what sells well for them and tell us what makes their shops so special.

Celine Woodfield-Razmuss Nutmeg Putney, London Can you tell us about your business? I only opened in February of this year. It’s a dream I have always had and I’m finally making it a reality! Nutmeg is based on the gorgeous lower Richmond Road, an area with a villagey feel in leafy West Putney in southwest London. Our typical customers are Putney mums through the week and a lot of grandparents, too. We have young professional locals and the brunch crowd on weekends. It’s just me on the team and I do everything - as well as being a mummy to my boy, 6, and my girl, 3. I aim to source locally made and quirky gifts and cards. I have a lot of cheeky items that make my customers giggle, although

58 Gifts Today

they’re not for everyone. I love colour so my shop is an explosion of colour with lots of rainbows. My aim is to become more and more sustainable/plastic free and eco-friendly. What mix of gifts do you offer in store? Lots of homewares and adult gifts from Stubbs Mugs, Maison La Bougie candles, Art Wow, Bombay Duck, Baa Stool, Quail, Katie Loxton and Joma Jewellery. We offer kids and baby items from brands including, Bob & Blossom, Jellycat, Sass & Belle, Rex, Meri Meri, Pebble & Best Years, Lello, Rosa & Bo, Sass + Me amongst others.

And also more unique/artistic brands from smaller makers including SparkleChild London, Nicola Rowlands, Be Still Candles, Phie Hackett and Eleanor Bowmer. And also an array of cards from Ohh Deer, Buddy Fernandez, Bettie Confetti, Paper Salad and Jolly Awesome. Which categories sell best for you? Candles, mugs and, of course, cards. When it comes to trends, eco products, pom poms, natural soy candles and colour all do well. Plans to visit any trade shows? Yes I love a trade show and love to find new inspiration. I’m hoping to visit Top Drawer and Autumn Fair this season and will be on the look out for ecofriendly, sustainable products with an ethical stance. Where else do you get inspiration? Pinterest, other small independents on Instagram, home/lifestyle magazines and my customers. What have been the biggest challenges you have faced? Making enough money to keep the shop fully replenished, stocked and constantly changing while trying to meet all the overheads of running a bricks and mortar shop. What advice would you give to others setting out? Don’t make huge orders; make lots of smaller orders and see what sells. Trust your vision and know your customers. Personality and customer service is so important. Get involved in the community, get to know the neighbours and ask the customers what they think/want. Plans for the rest of 2019 – especially Christmas! Becoming more sustainable and growing my customer base through marketing and being more involved in the community.

Fiona Leathem Gifted Clarkston, outside Glasgow What’s the story behind your shop? My husband Barry and I are the team and we opened our shop 10 years ago this September! We had both worked in retail and had always talked about opening our own shop. A redundancy led us to taking our careers into our own hands and we took the plunge and opened our doors on 11 September 2009. We are open seven days a week and mostly cater for families with busy lives. What makes your business special? We have a huge range of cards that attracts lots of very loyal customers. We also have a large range of Jellycat with almost 200 designs in stock. We try and sell as many brands as possible that are made in Scotland as our customers are always looking for things made locally. If a product isn’t Scottish, it definitely has to be made in the UK. What mix of gifts do you offer? Cards are always our best selling department with soft toys, home fragrance and jewellery also being consistently strong. Eco products sell really well – reusable coffee cups have been huge over the last year. We offer baby gifts from Jellycat, Ziggle and Cabbie Kids; home fragrance from Isle of Skye Candles, Siabann, Stoneglow and Pintail Candles; jewellery from Sea Gems, Carrie Elspeth, Jo For Girls, Firefrost, Jules Jules and PoM; toiletries from Scottish Fine Soaps and Shetland Soap Company; design-led gifts from Cath Waters Art, Belltrees Forge, Whisky Frames, Jo Downs Handmade Glass and DCUK; art prints from Adrian McMurchie and Fiona Leathem. Plans to visit trade shows? We attend Spring Fair, Home & Gift and both the Scottish Trade Fairs in January and September. We also visit other stores in Glasgow city centre and Instagram for inspiration. What have been the biggest challenges you have faced since opening? Finding staff to cover so we can both be away is challenging, we can be inundated with teenagers looking for a wee job but it’s difficult to find someone you can hand over and leave for a holiday What advice would you give to others setting out? Keep your hours regular so you can be relied upon.... we see lots of small businesses closing early if it’s quiet or there’s bad weather. Listen to your customers and hear what they want to buy. Don’t commit to spending money you don’t have. Oh and smile. A lot. Christmas plans? We had a new shop front fitted at the start of the year so I’m looking forward to dressing our new window for Christmas

RETAILERS’ PANEL Jo Day Autumn Hill Boutique Wells, Somerset The story behind your shop? The shop had been a lifelong dream for me, having been born and raised in Somerset, there was no other place I’d like to open my first shop. As a child my grandmother would walk me in to town on a Saturday and we would wander around the shops chatting about what I’d do when I grew up. I always said the same answer, I wanted to own a shop in Wells, she always used to say ‘one day you will my darling’.... that was 35 years ago and I opened the shop in June 2019. It’s a dream come true. What makes your business so special? We have stocked the shop by purchasing predominantly from other small independent businesses/suppliers. It’s very important to me to support other hand makers, crafters, artisans and independents. These businesses are created from love, passion, creativity and are often being run by families and/or by just one or two people. I have a young jeweller, Aliyah, who works, creates and makes her jewellery from the shop. You ‘meet the maker’ and see jewellery being made. What mix of gifts do you offer in store? For a small shop we have a big and varied mix of gifts and suppliers. For male grooming we have Norse Lifestyle. We met them at Spring Fair in 2017 and loved everything about them. They were my first ever supplier. For natural soaps and shampoo with no plastic, we have Primal Suds, whose ethos is make natural soaps affordable and obtainable. For 100% handmade sterling silver jewellery we have Humblebee Jewellery by Aliyah Faye. We also stock our own-brand handmade highly scented Wax Melts. We currently hold around 50 different fragrances and it was a great feeling being asked to supply them to another small business. Our greetings cards are from Ginger Betty, handmade leather products are from Ermestone Leather, and our everyday range is from East of India. For illustration-led homewares we have Dollyhotdogs and Paper Mirchi for handmade gift-wrap. Trade shows? We are very much looking forward to Autumn Fair, seeing the new trends that are emerging and finding more unique small businesses. Where do you get your inspiration? I adore Instagram. It is fantastic for finding new small suppliers and your imagination is driven wild by the explore feed. What has been your biggest challenge since opening? The biggest challenge so far has been getting people to come in to the shop. They look at the window displays and say how beautiful the shop is and then can often walk on. I’ve started to utilise the outside area of the shop with some of the more unusual items to get people to come in. What are your plans for 2019 especially Christmas? I am giddy with excitement for the rest of the year, particularly Christmas. I’m currently looking for new small suppliers and brands of unique items. I have always loved giving gifts and now I get to choose the stock that makes others smile. That makes Christmas in the shop extra magical.

RETAILERS’ PANEL Fiona Richards The Little Shop Arnside, Cumbria When did you set up – and why?! I bought the business two years ago after leaving my job in the buying office of a large national retailer. I had always wanted to be my own boss and build a business that would be successful. The emphasis is on quality gifts at a good price. As well as the large retirement community and young families, we have lots of holidaymakers, day visitors, hikers and foreign visitors. What mix of gifts do you offer in store? We have a range of scented candles by Vineyard Candles and soaps and candles by Agnes & Cat. We stock a range of baby products, with Peter Rabbit soft toys by Rainbow Designs obviously selling well in Cumbria, and beautifully soft baby toys from Groupe DetC. We also sell children’s toys and board games from Cheatwell and have a men’s gift range from Rex of London. We stock quality cards by local artists as well as Ling Design, Pigment, The Art File and Doodleicious to name a few. Jewellery comes from PoM and Life Charms mixed with locally made jewellery. East of India is one of our biggest sellers and always popular. We have a great mix of gift stationery for everyone from Otter House and Dandelion amongst others. Dandelion’s new notebook range has sold out three times in a month! We stock local walking books and maps, and children’s books, mostly from Usborne. Trade shows? I will probably be visiting Autumn Fair this year, as it is a great way to see what trends everyone is following, but it is the smaller exhibitors who draw my eye when looking for something exclusive and different. Where else do you get inspiration? I have found a surprising number of new suppliers through Instagram. Some contact me, others I have spotted and liked their products. I regularly get craftspeople and artists calling in the shop because they liked our Instagram page and want us to stock their products. I browse shops when on holiday and get ideas for display and new products. What trends have been doing well for you? I think the trend for quality and ethically sourced gifts has performed strongly. People love the pure soy candles, coconut butter soaps and porcelain and wooden gifts. I also find people are asking more and more about where products are made and what they are made from. There is more awareness of how goods are sourced. Most of our gifts are British made, with many-made right here in Cumbria and Lancashire. What have been the biggest challenges you have faced? Trying to give our shop an identity that is unique and different from the other shops in Arnside has taken time, but we have a reputation now that brings people back time and time again. It has been a slow process to mould an existing business into my vision, but we are nearly there. I am sure I shall be evolving constantly as the market changes. What advice would you give to others setting out? Do It! Be brave and believe in your vision. If you are passionate about your shop and friendly with your customers they will love what you are doing as much as you do and come back. Buy small, and if something doesn’t sell - move on and find something new.

RETAILERS’ PANEL Lindsey Adams Bonkers, St Andrews, Fife When did you set up – and why?! I started the business with my mother in 1983. We were both at a bit of a loose end at the time and it seemed like a good idea. Definitely not sound business advice, but somehow we made it work in the first few years and I am still running the business. We also have another shop in Edinburgh. Altogether we have 20 people, a mix of part and full-time, in the business. What makes your business so special? We try to stand out by stocking a mix of products that are old favourites or make you smile, are on trend or just lovely. We aim to make the customer experience in the shop exceptional to make us a favourite destination and get talked about. Do you have a typical customer? We are quite seasonal. St Andrews and Edinburgh both have busy summer visitor seasons so that brings people from all over the world, and in the cooler months we have local and student customers. What mix of gifts do you offer in store? Our top categories are soft toys, mugs, water bottles, books, games, small accessory bags and candles. Jellycat is very good for us for children’s gifts and we also sell their Amuseables – after all, who doesn’t need a cuddly avocado?! Mugs and variations on that theme are very strong at the moment with Chilly’s water bottles and Ecoffee Cups. Our quirky range of ‘ornaments’ by Shoeless Joe is very popular, and we are a stockist of Powder accessories – their A-Z socks have been a big hit this year. Our top candles just now are from Stoneglow and Esscentual. Where else do you get inspiration? Inspiration comes from everywhere but definitely speaking to customers and staff to find out what people need in their lives. I have to admit to sometimes eavesdropping on customer conversations in the shop too! Travelling and experiencing other businesses and types of business is inspirational. We can definitely learn from the hospitality industry. What have been the biggest challenges you have faced since opening? Well it’s been a few decades, but I would say having to deal with things that go wrong that are outside your control are the worst. Two really serious floods caused huge disruption and stress.

What advice would you give to others setting out on the same journey? Do your research. Speak to lots of people in the industry before you spend all your money on low priority things. Plans for the rest of 2019? We are working on engaging more with our loyalty card customers and social media followers. We want to make gift buying easy for our customers, and I think this Christmas it will have to be really affordable as well as being of a good quality and design. Penguins will still be hot!

Trade talk

Gifts Today loves to hear your views

Leading figures talk trends, Christmas and, of course, Autumn Fair

Charlotte Gillan

MD, Classic Canes

How important is Autumn Fair to you?

Autumn Fair kick-starts Christmas for us. In this digital age, I believe it has never been as important for suppliers and customers to meet face to face and remember that we are all real people working together to everyone’s mutual benefit. We all know that products can look quite different online and in catalogues to how they are in real life so a trip to a trade fair makes a buyer so much better informed. You can’t Google something you’ve never heard of, but you can find it by walking round a trade fair.

What can we expect from you at the show?

We have created a range of patterns such as cats, flamingos and skulls to connect with popular motifs of the moment.

Any big trends you’ve spotted for Christmas?

Gifts intended to be given by a cat or dog to members of their human family seem to be on the increase. I had several birthday cards like this! Many people have pets but no children, and these pets find themselves giving the small presents to their ‘parents’ that otherwise would be given by a child. I don’t think you can ever go wrong with dog and cat related gifts in the UK.

Where have you seen growth this year? Our National Gallery licenced range is selling well to our export customers as well as at home. When you have an image such as Monet’s water lily pond that is already widely known and loved, it really makes for an easy sale.

Any unexpected hits? We launched a poppy print cane towards the end of last year and thought it would sell well as it was pretty, but we hadn’t realised just how much demand there was for poppy-related remembrance products, not just at Remembrance Day but all year round.

Trevor Cash Director, Mad Beauty

How important is Autumn Fair/Top Drawer to your business?

Autumn Fair is a great opportunity to show all of our winter releases for the first time to the general trade. It’s a great launch pad for the Christmas season and a fantastic opportunity to see the reaction to our new designs. It also allows us to see many of our independent retailers who are so important to our Christmas season. Many of them have been buying our products for many years and we love feedback on new ranges and how existing ranges have sold for them.

What do you feel consumers are looking for when it comes to gifts at the moment?

Nostalgia and great value for money are a brilliant mix, which is where we are strong. Combine this with good quality cosmetics, bath & body and toiletries, either as gift packs or single units, it’s a ‘Mad’ combination for a successful season.

What can we expect from the team at Mad at the show for the last quarter? New product and more new product at very competitive pricing - make sure you drop in to see our new ranges.

Any big trends you’ve spotted for Christmas?

Disney is as strong as ever and with our designs leaning towards the original images rather than movie support this appeals to the buyer of great quality products with a strong sense of nostalgia.

Where have you seen growth this year? Princesses, Minnie and Barbie’s 60th anniversary.

Any unexpected hits for you?

Facemasks continue to perform extremely well, which is why we are adding Star Wars and Marvel to our existing range.

Suzanne Chapman UK country manager Village Candle

What are consumers are looking for when it comes to gifts right now?

For that something special to gift to friends and family. Our petite jars make the perfect stocking filler. For those customers looking to spend a little more, you can experience up to 110 hours of candle burn from our 24oz decor pillar jar.

Any big trends you’ve spotted for Christmas?

‘Time for me’ continues to be a strong theme. Life can be so busy, and taking some well deserved time out and looking after yourself and your loved ones will be key. Relax at home with a soy and essential oil candle from our Presence range. Personalisation is another trend that continues to grow from strength to strength - sentiment messages with personalisation on it will continue to drive footfall in the gifting industry.

Sarah Watmore

Lisa Fuller

Owner, Miss Milly

UK sales manager, Price’s Candles

How important is Autumn Fair to you? Autumn Fair tends to be the one that reaches customers south of the Midlands and those who are combining it with a visit to IJL or Top Drawer, as well as overseas buyers attracted by the convenience of Birmingham airport. The show gives us a shop window where retailers can actually touch the products and essentially get a better idea of your brand as a whole.

What are consumers are looking for when it comes to gifts right now? In an uncertain political and economic climate, retailers want to ensure they stock products that sell. Whilst tried and tested is a good plan, it’s so important to also splash some new about, particularly for those stores with a loyal customer base.

What can we expect from you at the show? Miss Milly is focusing on what it does best - gorgeous, colourful jewellery at reasonable prices, with stunning new designs and old favourites in up-to-date colourways. We’re adding a selection of magnetic brooches, new winter weight scarves and a brand new purse range featuring four designs in soft colours.

How important is Autumn Fair to the team at Price’s?

It’s the perfect product launch pad to demonstrate to retailers how we can help them grow their business with our range of products.

What are consumers are looking for when it comes to gifts right now? Consumers are looking for seasonal, festive gifts with the shift forward to the Christmas season, which is our busiest time of the year. The Luxury Range is launching exclusively at Autumn Fair and has been meticulously designed with richness and opulence in mind. This is reflected in the beautiful, fine quality waxes and elegant gift boxes, giving a unique, premium feel to the products.

What can we expect from you at the show?

We’re also introducing three special edition festive fragrances into our best-selling Fragrance Collection. To capitalise on the success our retailers have been having with our Fresh Air Odour Eliminating range, visitors to the stand will notice an additional two Limited Edition fragrances this year, introduced specifically for the autumn/winter season. Furthermore, every visitor to the Price’s Candles stand will receive a complimentary scented candle tin, in the luxurious fragrance of Warm Cashmere.

Trade talk Paul Hooker

Steven Russell

Commercial director, Joe Davies

Marketing manager, Jumbo

How important is Autumn Fair to you?

How important is Autumn Fair to you?

Very. Customers at the show are there to buy and want stock for immediate delivery. Expect a stand crammed with 2500 brand new lines for the busy season ahead.

It comes at the perfect time of the year for us, with puzzles and games being so heavily weighted to the final quarter of the year. The show attracts a vast number of visitors from retail outlets that are different to the other shows in the year.

Any big trends you’ve spotted for Christmas?

There has been a real trend in countryside themes this year on everything from jewellery to ceramics. Sentiment home messages continue to be popular and the tree of life is extending into new product areas, such as wall plaques.

Where have you seen growth this year?

Growth this year has come from fashion gifts, such as Sock Society, snoozies and Equilibrium along with countryside themes across other items. On regular gift items licences like Bree Merryn, Bug Art, Sunny by Sue, William Morris and MacNeil are all performing strongly.

Any unexpected hits for you?

One of the most surprising winners has been our Tree of Life Vases and the Village Pottery collection of planters and tea lights.

68 Gifts Today

What are consumers are looking for when it comes to gifts right now?

Affordable and value for money are more of a focus right now. Whether you’re buying a puzzle for yourself or as a gift for someone else, you are pretty much guaranteed to be getting a product that is enjoyable, and is no more than £20.

What can we expect from you at the show?

Our new range of autumn/winter themed jigsaw puzzles for adult fans, especially the brand-new Christmas puzzles from our hugely popular Falcon de luxe and Wasgij ranges. Both the new 1000-piece Christmas puzzles are beautifully decorated, feature eye-catching illustrations and produced from 100%-recycled cardboard. As an extra special ‘treat’ we’ve included a free 1000-piece Christmas puzzle in the box too, at no extra cost.

Any big trends you’ve spotted for Christmas?

Licensed products for games and puzzles is not what it used to be and the areas of growth are in own-brand ranges – which we have plenty of and is where we are seeing our growth and demand for more product building.

Where have you seen growth this year?

Our growth across our adult puzzle business has been remarkable - we’re seeing high double-digits growth across our Falcon de luxe, Wasgij and Jan van Haasteren brands that are all own-brands.

Any unexpected hits?

We’ve had a lot of attention and very positive reviews of consumers for some of our new Family Strategy Games that we’ve launched the past year. The most popular include Overbooked, How To Rob A Bank, Caper and Forbidden City. We exhibited at the UK Games and these games were never put down – which was great, but very exhausting having to play game after game.

Q&A

Charlotte Gillan At Classic Canes

Hall 9, stand G100-F101

Q: Charlotte, Classic Canes are launching an exclusive new range of patterned walking sticks and folding canes at this year’s Autumn Fair. Why is design so important?

A: Walking stick users are becoming ever more style conscious and it is important that we have original and fun designs to appeal to them. Many younger people use walking sticks and they want something that will reflect their personality, so popular motifs like cats and flamingos are sure to be popular. This range offers something for everyone, from the cute forest creatures to the fashion-led skulls design.

Q: And how can this help retailers?

A: It allows them to offer designs that are not available elsewhere in order to cater to their regular customers and attract new ones. The new products comprise heightadjustable derby walking sticks in four patterns. ‘Crazy Cats’ features charming cartoon cats in a variety of colours on a black background; ‘Forest Friends’ depicts foxes, hedgehogs and red squirrels on a light brown background; ‘Flamingos’ of various hues on pale grey and ‘Butterflies’ of several varieties on an azure blue cane. The folding models offer a choice of ‘Crazy Cats’, ‘Skulls’ which are in silver-grey on a black cane, ‘Bats at Night’ which depicts bats, stars and winter tree silhouettes on a mauvegrey background and a very elegant ‘Swallows’ pattern of gold swallows swooping on a black background.

Q: Any other new ranges at the show?

A: Two new dog head canes and an ultra-petite folding cane for walking stick users who are not very tall.

Top Drawer

Get inspired at Top Drawer Ahead of the September edition, Gifts Today caught up with the show’s event director Alejandra Campos to discover what makes the show so special Alejandra, what do you think makes Top Drawer such a special show? I genuinely believe there is no other industry quite like this. It is buzzy and human-centric, and it is very special to work on a show that so many turn to for inspiration. So much of what we do is about supporting the industry as a whole, but especially independent retailers, and it is deeply satisfying to know that so many visitors and exhibitors see success based on the relationships they build at Top Drawer. The show has become a destination for a tribe of people passionate about design and retail to come together in celebration of the industry. It is as much about the exchange of ideas and experiences as it is about the buying and selling. Why should buyers visit the show? The opportunity to meet with over 1000 brands and designers who share a passion for design and creativity is something you simply don’t get through desktop research and online ordering. It is no secret that it is a challenging time for retail at the moment, and visitors are turning to our shows not just to source new products, but also for inspiration and expert advice. So, in September, we are adding a new area, Retail Clinics, specifically created for retailers to gain advice from a selection of leading solutions providers in 1-to-1 sessions. Visitors can also gain invaluable insight from industry leaders in our two free-to-attend seminar programmes, the longstanding RetailFest and the recently introduced and very well received DesignTalk. What are you most excited about? One of Top Drawer’s main appeals is that visitors have access not only to leading established brands, but also to emerging talent and new design. 86 Gifts Today

Spotted, our dedicated area for designers who are commercially-ready but new to trade, will be enhanced further by Pulse which is now co-located with Top Drawer and shines the spotlight on those who have been in business for three years or less. Sustainability is obviously the word on everyone’s mind at the moment, and also something that I’m personally very committed to. Many of our wonderful brands - such as The Flax Sax, Zero Waste Club, Raine & Humble, Kind Bags and Garden Trading - are taking steps to ensure that eco-friendly products and green practices are incorporated into what they do, so as a show we are taking steps to support their initiatives and help them shout about it. Any new exhibitors you’re particularly excited to welcome? We have many exhibitors showing exclusively with us and some exciting names, around 250, joining the September edition for the first time this year. Amara are officially launching their A by Amara collection to the industry; from trend-driven bed linen and towels to elegant cutlery and glassware, they epitomise accessible luxury. Anyone looking for innovative, quirky and unique gifts will not want to miss this edition. Suck UK, Block Designs, Bitten BV, Doodle Mooo and a new South Korean brand, BitPlay Inc., are just a few of the amazing new gift exhibitors that will be showcasing their wares. In our Fashion edit, we’re excited to welcome Katie Loxton, who will present their latest range of accessories. What trends/designs can we expect to see coming through at the show? For the A/W19 edition, we are very excited to be partnering with global insight consultancy, Flamingo, who add rich analysis to the trends that

are developing, largely based on cultural shifts and the desire to bring innovation and nature together. Our four key trends this season are called: Introspection, Modern Vestige, Soft Assembly, and Grounded Rituals. The most exciting part is that visitors will get to see these come to life in the Trends Café. Each one has been curated in collaboration with leading retailers Selfridges, Oliver Bonas and Heal’s.

What’s the buzz? Beeswax Wraps H-B6 Handmade in the Cotswolds by Carly and Fran, from GOTS certified organic cotton, organic jojoba oil, pine resin, and beeswax from their network of friendly UK beekeepers. Lasting over a year, their Beeswax Wraps are the perfect natural alternative to single-use plastics like cling film and sandwich bags. The pine resin gives the wraps a natural adhesive, making sure food is sealed tight. Food stays noticeably fresher for longer, thanks to the breathability of the cotton. At the end of the wrap’s long life, you can re-wax them with one of their Beeswax Wrap Refresher Blocks to give them another 8-12 months of life. Once they are well and truly used, pop them in the compost bin to biodegrade or use them as firelighters. Since launching the company in June 2017 they have been overwhelmed with the interest in their wraps. It really has shown them how much of an appetite there is from people wanting to make positive changes in their daily lives to help the environment. Their wraps are available from The Isle of Skye to Svalbard and Forfar to The Falkland Islands. They are available in a variety of sizes and packs to suit all kitchens and budgets, starting from £10. The beautiful fabrics also look a lot nicer than cling film! Just visit the tutorials page on the website for their step by step video guides.

GT PROFILE: POSH PAWS

Time to sparkle! Posh Paws International Stand I19 Gifts Today caught up with Lauren Shipman, group brand & marketing director at Posh Paws, to learn more about the company’s Chic & Love Swarovski range, launching at Top Drawer.

Lauren. How did the collaboration with Swarovski Chic & Love come about?

As soon as we were presented with the opportunity to work on a Swarovski Chic & Love plush range, we knew it was a chance not to be missed, to develop a brand new range that was not available in the current market. We recognise that Swarovski is a well-respected brand and knew we could come up with a collection that would resonate with their core values.

What does the range comprise of?

We have developed three exclusive Swarovski Crystal plush ranges; the first is our Keepsake Bears, a premium collection of teddy bears adorned with Swarovski crystal jewellery attachments. These highquality bears offer a unique gift whatever the occasion. The second range is our Crystal Charms collection, a range of on-trend Swarovski Crystal Encrusted Bag Charms - a must have fashion accessory to give a bag that extra little bit of sparkle. And last but not least, we have developed a range of Swarovski embellished Plush Make-up Bags using on trend colours and prints.

Who’s the target audience for both the Crystal Charms and the Bear? We see there being two distinct markets for each range, however we are aware that Swarovski as a brand have a huge following and therefore it is likely 90 Gifts Today

there will be some crossovers. The Keepsake Bear will have a primary audience appeal of females aged 30+. The Crystal Charms and Make-Up Bags will appeal to young females aged 7-22.

How many more characters will be launched over the next year? In 2020 we will have an additional two releases for both the Crystal Charms Collection and Crystal Plush Make-Up Bags.

What makes Posh Paws plush so special?

We are known in the industry for delivering the highest quality plush to retail. We continue to deliver premium products for best in class brands including the BBC, Disney, Universal and ITV. You can be sure when purchasing a Posh Paws product that it will be a treasured gift for many years.

Why have you chosen Top Drawer for the launch?

Top Drawer is the perfect gift show to launch our new collections as the show pairs perfectly leading toy and gift ranges, with design and lifestyle-led products. Our product range sits within both premium gift as well as fashion and lifestyle.

Anything special planned on your stand?

We have a few exciting events planned for the show, this includes a Swarovski Prize Giveaway and an all-important selfie opportunity.

SOCIAL MEDIA - ROSS HEWITT: GT CONTRIBUTOR

Jumpstart your Facebook page Check out some simple strategies to help you increase your reach with potential customers

W

ith Facebook continuing to force business page owners to have to pay for eyes on their content it is still becoming harder and harder to get decent traction with social media content. Whatever your size of audience it is a real achievement to get an engagement level of over two or three percent. Look at a post that you think went well and do the maths… add up the number of likes and comments then divide that by the number of people who follow your page and times it by one hundred. If you have managed to achieve an engagement of over three percent

as they chose to follow your page because they want to be kept up to date yet it is likely that the content they want to see will never be put in front of them in their newsfeed. It’s all very heart-warming that the founder of Facebook is going to spend billions helping humanity with lots of philanthropic projects, but it’s all going to happen by ‘taxing’ business owners who use Facebook or Instagram…so you suck, Zuck! This choke down on reach is also commonplace now on Instagram, so that one has gone the same way as Facebook…you need to pay to play. There isn’t much that can be done to stem the tide and to dramatically increase your reach, but there are a few things that can help a little bit.

‘ then you are probably looking at a post that was either boosted or where people had to like or comment to enter a competition… so now do the exercise on a ’normal’ post. If you do get that impressive result frequently on normal posts then let me know as you should be writing this column every month instead of me. I have probably whinged on about this before, and likely many times, but it just sucks that you work hard to build an audience of followers and then you have your capability to reach them choked down so brutally by some American nerd’s algorithm…and all because he or she has never had a girlfriend/ boyfriend and so hates the world (maybe). It sucks for the audience too

Freepik

Everything you do needs to be generating engagement if you want your page to be shown to more of your followers

A good starting point is to familiarise yourself with how Facebook’s algorithm works, and to try and simplify matters for you, here are some things the algorithm likes: • Posts with lots of likes, comments, and shares • Posts that receive a high volume of likes, comments, or shares in a short time • Post types that users seem to prefer more than others (such as photo, video, or status update) • Posts that are timely or reference a trending topic • Posts from Pages with complete profile information For balance, here are some things that the algorithm does NOT like: • Overly promotional content from

Pages—pushing people to buy an app or service, pushing people to enter a contest, posts that reuse the same text from ads • Frequently circulated content and repeated posts • Text-only status updates from Pages • Posts that ask for likes, comments, or shares Using the above as a guide you can start to think about the next few posts you are planning. If you still aren’t using images or videos in your posts then get busy with them right now. Text-only updates fall flat…it’s a fact now. You also need to get your page profile completely up to date if you haven’t done so already. To generate more interaction with your posts, try to create ones that ask a question or clearly require input from your audience. Too many pages publish content that allows the audience to remain passive. Try a ‘fill in the blank’ question such as ‘My favourite gift is _______’. Make this a visual post by posting a suitable image with the text of the question overlaid on it and then repeat the question in the post text. This should start to get some responses and as more people respond then more people that see it will join in too. This makes the Facebook algorithm happy so it will put the post in front of more people than would normally see it. ‘Either Or’ or ‘True or False’ type questions also generate activity as they are easy to answer. Direct questions that stimulate longer answers also work”. You know your audience best, so trial this type of content in the way that you believe will be the most compelling, but always be testing and learning as everything you do needs to be generating engagement if you want your page to be shown to more of your followers. Remember, you’re fighting against maths/code nerds at Facebook…so work to stimulate something they don’t understand… human interaction!

Lovely labels Avery UK

This summer Avery UK is launching an exciting new range of labels that are perfect for keeping young families organised. It makes an ideal gift for any busy parent or teacher as these labels help identify all children’s belongings including uniforms, spare clothing, shoes, bags, stationery and lunchboxes. Many of the Avery team have young children themselves and recognised that so often children lose items, or they get mixed up with others. School and nursery staff are regularly donating or throwing out unnamed toys, clothes, shoes and bags that can’t be returned and parents are having to buy new products which can be costly. Naming items has traditionally been a time-consuming task which is why these Avery labels can be handwritten on, so each item is labelled in a matter of seconds. Parents can even leave the labels in the car for last-minute naming on the school run. The ‘back to school’ period can be a costly and stressful time for parents but eye-catching displays, clear signage and point of sale advice can really help give inspiration to busy parents. We’d recommend including Avery self-adhesive labels with stationery products and other school items, so parents have just one place to shop. These new labels are sold at a low price making them an attractive gift but one that can also help save money throughout the year.

Call: 0800 805020 Visit: avery.co.uk/family

Laura Brickley, retail product manager at Avery UK said: ‘Many parents will be looking to buy stationery, bags, shoes and clothes during the back to school season. However, at the back of their minds there is always a worry about these items getting lost during the new school year. For those looking to contribute to the cost of going back to school, naming labels make a perfect gift for grandparents, friends or other family members to give. Labelling items can reassure parents that belongings that are mislaid could be returned. By adding the Avery family range to your stationery offering you can increase your sales from those looking to support families going back to school with a quick, easy and cheap naming solution.’

Dofta GT PROFILE:

Q&A with Dofta Gifts Today caught up with Anna Riller, creative director of the Swedish fragrance-led gift brand that has now arrived on British shores Anna, how did you come to set up Dofta? I grew up in Sweden, surrounded by nature, the beaches and the seashore meadows. I was truly a barefoot child, romping around the countryside, preferably on horseback. After many years working and living abroad, I moved back from the US to the old family farm in Sweden. I had always been fascinated by the world of scents and fragrances, so that is what I decided to pursue. What makes the range different? There are three significant reasons. First, we create all our own fragrances exclusively for Dofta. Second, our packaging is very beautiful with high-end finishes. Third, all our bases are very clean, as we use ultra-pure natural waxes, organic soap bases, natural lotion components and so on. All unnecessary additives are removed and our ingredients are chosen thoughtfully. What makes the fragrances so special? I think it’s because I have no formal perfume training and have learned by doing over the past ten years. I am an analytic and structured person by nature, yet very creative. Also, the quality is very high. The fragrances are pure and clean without any unnecessary additives in our product formulations. We don’t cut corners and want to provide the best product we can.

What’s the story behind the packaging? I personally love thoughtful, beautiful packaging with attention to detail. If you are presented with a gift, I believe you really want the packaging to reflect the values and quality of the product inside the box. So we designed our gift boxes as they are now, carefully handcrafted with a sensuous textured paper outside of the box and with a soft grosgrain ribbon on top. They also come with golden decals, individually named for each fragrance in the range. Is there a typical customer in mind? Anyone that cares about quality! Your personal favourite? My favourite daytime fragrance is Blush, as it’s modern and fresh without being too floral. In the evening I love Black Orchid, a sensuous blend of sandalwood and cyclamen. New, new, new Enesco

Peter Rabbit family mug gift set Hot on the heels of the ever-growing ‘twinning trend’, Enesco, has unveiled a brand new Peter Rabbit Mummy, Daddy and Me Mug Gift Set into its Beatrix Potter collection. Featuring your customers’ favourite bob-tailed bunny, each mug has depictions of Peter Rabbit, using original illustrations from Beatrix Potter’s much-loved literary classics. The Mummy Mug features Peter in a warm embrace with Mrs. Rabbit with the words ‘You, always and forever’ in a delightful blue scrolling script. On the inside rim of the mug, the words ‘Mummy’ can be seen in the same font. The Daddy Mug has Peter Rabbit wearing his iconic blue jacket standing next to a green watering can. The mug reads ‘Everyday hero’, with the words ‘Daddy’ on the inside rim of the vessel. Completing the gift set is the Me Mug. Again with Peter Rabbit, next to the illustration it reads ‘Lippity, loppity, HOP!’, with the inside rim presented with the words ‘Me’ on it.

Gaston and Lafou additions to Disney Traditions There are new Beauty and the Beast themed pieces in the Disney Traditions by Jim Shore collection, with the addition of a Gaston and Lafou figurine. Muscle-Bound Menace depicts the villain of Beauty and the Beast in his iconic pose, with Gaston flexing his biceps in a stance showing off his strength. At Gaston’s feet, Lafou can be seen looking up adoringly at his misguided hero. The scene is beautifully sculpted from stone resin and hand-painted in a palette of vibrant reds featuring intricate quilting designs synonymous with Shore’s style on the clothing of the characters.

Mother & newborn Willow Tree figurine Depicting the bond between a mother and her newborn baby, this is a beautiful gift to celebrate a new arrival’s birth, christening or naming ceremony. Sanctuary stands at 17cm tall and features a female figure gently holding a baby wrapped in swaddling. Artist Susan Lordi said: ‘I like the word Sanctuary. I’m thinking of it as a safe warm space that mother and baby create by being together, quiet, peaceful. The baby feels safe and happy, and the mother is too.’

New range of Lolita Gin Copa glasses The four glasses are: Butterfly, Ladybug, My Drinking Garden and Dragonfly. Each uses the signature Lolita style of bright bold colours with ‘blinged-up’ embellishments. Every Lolita glass begins life as a sketch. The glasses are then blown using traditional techniques and are handcrafted. As all of the glasses are made using this method, very slight variations can occur in the thickness of the rim or the weight of the product, all adding to the charm that is a Lolita glass.
