o, here it is – Spring Fair 2020. I don’t know about you, but I love the optimism of a new year and the start of the buying season. At the start of a new decade, it feels right that the show has been redesigned, with two distinct sourcing destinations – Gift in the Piazza, and Home & Living in the Atrium. The aim is to make crossover buying as effortless as possible and I, for one, can’t wait to see it in action. As show director Julie Driscoll told me: ‘We’ve totally revamped the Spring Fair offering for 2020’ Everyone seems to be looking forward to it. As Perry Simmons from Stoneglow told us: ‘We can’t wait to see the new format. It will feel more modern and contemporary, and compete on par if not better than Maison.’ I’m really looking forward to catching up with friends old and new, to discovering trends, and absorbing as much as I can about this brilliant industry. The Gifts Today team will be there for the whole show, so drop us an email if you’d like us to pop over and see you or to grab a quick coffee. It’s definitely worth going to the show on the Sunday, by the way, as the Gift of the Year awards will take place at the end of the day and everyone’s welcome to attend. The finalists have been chosen (see page 14 for the full list) and I for one can’t wait to see who scoops the big prize. As well as all the excitement of the new, it strikes me that there’s a real focus on the importance of heritage in this issue. Our fabulous cover stars, Price’s Candles, were founded back in 1830, and yet they’re still as on-trend and relevant as ever. Their comprehensive range now offers something for all customers, for every season. Read more about them on page 30. And don’t forget to head over to them at Spring Fair, Hall 3, stand J22-K23.

We also catch up with Phil Atherton, Group Sales & Marketing Director of Portmeirion Group, about Spode’s 250th anniversary and the company’s acquisition of US premium housewares company Nambé.You can read more on page 90 and visit them at Spring Fair in Hall 8, stand A60-B61. And our retail interview is with The Piece Hall, Halifax. It’s a really good example of where ‘heritage can be used as the currency of the future’, according to CEO Nicky Chance-Thompson. The Piece Hall is a stunning building that’s undergone a £19m revamp and, as well as restaurants and events, it also offers 35 retail outlets, many of them gift shops. It’s so successful, there’s a waiting list of around 30 businesses that want to join. Read my interview with Nicky, starting on page 22. When it comes to colour trends, many say the forecasters are playing it safe this year, with the Pantone Colour of the Year named as Classic Blue. It’s described as a ‘universal favourite, representing a dependable and stable foundation to move forward to a new era.’ Personally, I love it, and we’ve done a great round up of some Spring Fair companies who are taking inspiration from this shade and we highlight some of the best, page 44. We have page after page of wonderful product across all categories in this issue and I hope you manage to have a peaceful browse before you hit the floors at the NEC. Make sure you check out our extensive InStyle section, starting on page 71. There’s so much lovely jewellery and fashion

accessories of all sorts available now. Please enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together, and we hope to see you at the show.

Ambiente will have around 1100 international exhibitors, who will be turning the Living area into a source of inspiration for buyers and experts in interior design, interior decoration and contract furnishing. ‘Authenticity, origin, sustainability and lifestyle trends. It’s the spirit of our time to be well informed,’ says Yvonne Engelmann, head of Living and Giving. ‘Good retailers need to have outstanding advisory skills as well as a product range that meets the precise needs of their clientèle. They also need to provide a unique general shopping experience that delivers tangible added value.’ Trade visitors who come to Ambiente will find a Living area that is full of inspiring design ideas, furniture and accessories. Published by HarperCollins since 1968, Judith Kerr’s first book was The Tiger Who Came to Tea, which has sold over five million copies and has never been out of print. M&G’s range consists of four Tiger cards in its long-running The Illustrators range, a selection of boxed notelets and hang-pack social stationery, a writing set, journals and notebooks, a magnetic notepad, gift packaging (wrap, bags and tissue), a bamboo travel mug, an HB pencil set, and bookmarks.

Mark Turner, Owner, Art Cushions said: ‘The classic timeless style of Turnowsky’s designs will, we believe, be widely welcomed in the interiors sector.’ The licensing agreement has been brokered in the UK on behalf of House of Turnowsky by UK Licensing Agency, This is Iris.

Elf on the Shelf’s success with Kellogg’s The company collaborated with the cereal company for a second year to feature the cheeky characters on six million cereal boxes in the run up to Christmas. The partnership also included a competition to win one of nearly 1000 prizes, each valued at £80, seeing over half a million entries - 60,000 entries past last year’s grand total. Moreover, during one week in November, the promotion had over 96,000 entries, which is the highest number of entries ever for a Kellogg’s UK promotion.

Caring collaboration

Ladies in lavender The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has announced the arrival in 2020 of the RHS Flower Blooms Lavender Garden collection of toiletries and accessories – the latest range in a highly successful RHS partnership with leading British beauty and fine toiletries company Heathcote & Ivory. This collection, the third in the RHS Flower Blooms series, contains shower gel, scented soap, body lotion and hand cream as well as a set of three hand creams and a weekend away bag containing body wash and body lotion. Accessories include garden drawer liners, pillow mist and a lavender-filled eye mask. All the items in the collection offer bespoke formulations blended with botanical extracts of wisteria and lilac with Lavandula essential oil.

British home and giftware manufacturer, My Gifts Trade, is at the centre of a wonderful new collaboration between Marie Curie and iconic British brand, i like birds. The new licensed collection will feature a charming daffodil and Blue Tit design created by i like birds founder, Stuart Cox, exclusively for Marie Curie. Ten per cent of the proceeds from every piece sold will be donated to the charity, helping them continue to provide care and support for people living with a terminal illness, and their loved ones. Marie Curie is a charity very close to Stuart’s heart, as his own mum was cared for in a hospice. ‘They managed to turn what should have been the worst days of my life into a beautiful celebration of her life,’ he says. ‘The hospice let her go out in a gentle and graceful way, with views of the birds from her window.’

RETAIL INTERVIEW: The Piece Hall, Halifax

Paul White

A Northern showstopper

Nicky, what is your career journey to becoming CEO of The Piece Hall? After a 15-year award-winning career in advertising and media, where I worked on Tesco’s transformation and then with BT and other international brands, I was asked to move into the field of Government policy which led to my journey into regeneration. I now live in Halifax, West Yorkshire, where my husband was born after travelling up here for a temporary six-month stay to support family members who were ill. That temporary stay has now become 14 years, as I fell instantly for God’s Own Country! My family have strong links to Bradford and the area as my ancestor is the composer Delius. My aunt recently confirmed that the family fortunes that included Bendicks chocolates were founded on the wool trade and it is extremely likely that they traded here at The Piece Hall, which is a bit spooky. I loved The Piece Hall the first time I

saw it. There was real pride taken in the design and building of it and that spirit continues today. When I found out that the Council and National

As the world’s only surviving example of an intact eighteenth-century cloth hall, The Piece Hall in Halifax reopened in 2017 after a £19m revamp. Since then, this retail destination has welcomed over six million visitors through its doors to shop, eat and socialise. Editor Sally Norton caught up with Nicky Chance-Thompson, CEO of The Piece Hall Trust, to learn about the West Yorkshire venue’s history, renovation and plans for the future

Paul White Lottery Heritage Fund intended to transform the space, I asked if I could help. I became a Trustee of the newly-formed The Piece Hall Trust and went onto be the Chief Executive in 2017. Can you explain how this fabulous renovation project come about? The Piece Hall is the UK’s own Eiffel Tower and we need to start thinking of it as such. It’s been at the heart of Halifax life for nearly 250 years. Over the last century, The Piece Hall has been used in a range of ways including playing host to large Victorian spectacles and a wholesale market. In the last few decades the building had fallen into decline until, in 2012, Calderdale MBC recognised that this important historical asset required to meet the needs of 21st century businesses, customers and visitors and an extensive redevelopment would be needed. The Piece Hall is a really good example of where heritage can be used as the currency of the future. In 2012, the Council successfully applied for co-funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund that enabled them to start the transformation in earnest. In 2014, The Piece Hall closed to the public, and an ambitious conservation and build programme commenced which included the careful restoration of the 18th century stonework and the upgrade of infrastructure and services to convert the original 315 units (once used for storing cloth) into exceptional retail and public facilities. The building then re-opened to the public on Yorkshire Day, 1 August 2017, marking a new era for The Piece Hall as a contemporary leisure, retail, cultural and heritage destination.

‘The Piece Hall is a really good example of where heritage can be used as the currency of the future’ What’s on offer to visitors? In addition to our incredible range of independent retailers, The Piece Hall is fast becoming a ‘must visit’ destination for food and drink and we showcase an incredible range of independent local culinary talent, including The Trading Rooms, The Bakery and Blondin’s Ice Cream Parlour. There’s also The Deli, Elder, Just Gaia, Leaf, G’s Cakes, Spogs and Spice, and The Chocolate Box. We also have more than 60 gin brands available at Gin Lane and I’d recommend a visit to The Wine

Barrel, which matches wines from all over the world with delicious desserts. We also offer an annual programme of events which is building every year and has included breath-taking sculpture, independent food festivals and live music plus major cultural spectacles such as ‘Zara’, which saw a giant puppet in the courtyard, and ‘FierS a Cheval’ – a magical herd of inflatable white horses from French outdoor theatre specialists Compagnie des Quidams. Visitors can also enjoy our free heritage tours with our wonderful team of expert volunteer guides. Is there a typical visitor? It really varies. We get a lot of local people from Halifax who love having The Piece Hall on their doorstep and have come to view it as their favourite place to meet, eat and shop. There are also regular visitors from Manchester, Leeds and wider Yorkshire. Of the six million visitors to The Piece Hall since its reopening, over 80,000 have

So it’s more than just a retail destination? Over 84% people interviewed by Visit Calderdale in 2018 said The Piece Hall was the main reason for their visit to the area. We have great theatres, markets, bars and restaurants and some great architecture set in stunning countryside. Anne Lister or ‘Gentleman Jack’ as she was known, lived here in Shibden Hall and you can visit her home and perhaps try one of the walks she took. Gifts Today 23

brought a significant benefit to the town with many people naming it as the best thing about the whole area. Bucking national trends, the overall value of tourism in Calderdale in 2018 was £348.9 million – up 1.4% from the previous year. Historic England consider The Piece Hall to be ‘the most successful renewal project of its time’ with an exemplar business model. How many people are employed by The Piece Hall, in the running of it? The Piece Hall Trust employs 24 full time staff who are dedicated to ensuring that the building is safe and attractive to all visitors. We have celebrated the major milestone of six million visitors in under three years since re-opening, far exceeding our original target of 1.6 million visitors per year. It’s amazing. And we are delivering a great return on investment. We commissioned an independent report created by Bradshaw Advisory - using the official HM Treasury ‘Green Book’ approach - that revealed that to date The Piece Hall has generated over £26m to the local economy with an anticipated conservative estimate of an ongoing £12m per year, which is just incredible. It is no wonder that in a local survey eight out of ten local people thought The Piece Hall has

What makes it such a special place? Spring Fair

Spring into Spring Fair With 2500+ exhibitors, 17 curated sectors and three revamped content areas, it’s time to head to the re-edited Spring Fair

S

pring Fair, the number one sourcing destination for home and gift retail, is set to inspire and invigorate visitors with new-for-2020 features, theatre areas and focuses. Recognising that consumers’ needs and wants are evolving, the Spring Fair layout has been re-edited to help visitors identify opportunities to ramp up their retail business and fuel greater sales and profits. Existing to fuel retail and enable the industry to make and meet its market, the show promises to be market-fresh, people-connected, on-future and scale-certain. Just one of the significant changes planned for Spring Fair 2020, backed by a major investment programme from organisers Hyve Group, is a transformational reshuffle of the show floor to form two distinct sourcing destinations – Gifts and Home & Living. This follows a successful re-edit of Autumn Fair 2019, which created a renewed look-and-feel for the must-attend marketplace for product discovery.

Market-fresh ideas and insights Across five days and three stages, visitors will be treated to fresh retail sector insights from worldrenowned industry innovators and disruptors. For the duration of the show, Spring Fair’s Inspiring Retail Stage, Design and Source Stage and Retail Skills Theatre will become home to the best ideas in retail. Hosting insightful seminars, celebrity Q&As and expert panel discussions covering hot topic issues from sustainability, customer experience, and the ever-increasing move towards hybrid retailing will be the Inspiring Retail Stage. Major industry keynote speakers from John Lewis, Selfridges, Google, PWC and Mintel will be joining show trend partners Colour Hive to share their successes with the audience. Covering the essential must-know tips, tricks and best practices for the retail industry in 2020 will be the speakers of the ever-popular Retail Skills Theatre. Located in Hall 2, the stage will host a number of educational speakers focusing on delivering practical insights for everyone from fledgling start-up retailers to established online indies looking to improve their offering. Amongst the speakers will be management coaches, HR experts, digital consultants and PR strategists with Google Digital Garage running a series of workshops within this theatre.

Nurturing international ambitions at the show For 2020 Spring Fair has pledged to open up new opportunities, markets and trend influences as part of its ‘Hello New’ event theme and mantra. As part of this, the show will recognise the growing importance 26 Gifts Today

of the creative design process that brands and retailers must go through before they take those new products to manufacture. To support this, The Design and Source Stage will feature as part of the show’s all-new Sourcing area in Hall 18. Speakers will give insight-led talks on how visitors can get one-step ahead of market rivals in 2020 by looking beyond the UK’s borders for the best and most competitively priced products. They’ll also address the latest design practices and inspiration sources, as well as educate visitors about more practical issues such as product lifecycle management and sourcing techniques.

Sustainability-focused The show will also continue to help businesses drive more sustainable changes, encouraging buyers to think about not only the price and quality of a product but of its environmental impact. Buyers will have the opportunity to meet with thousands of potential new suppliers who will challenge them to adopt new products that will win plaudits from consumers. As part of a commitment to help visitors make positive and sustainable changes to their business model, the show will play host to a new sustainability trail which will make it easier than ever before for visitors to connect with ethically and environmentally conscious suppliers.

Q&A Julie Driscoll Ahead of Spring Fair, Sally Norton caught up with Hyve Group Regional Director for Spring & Autumn Fair to discover about the show’s re-edit, the issue of sustainability, and more Spring Fair has had a re-edit for 2020. What are the key elements of this redesign and how will it benefit visitors?

Julie Driscoll

As we begin the new decade, we recognise that the retail industry isn’t the same sector it was at the beginning of 2019, let alone at the start of the last decade. In this spirit, we’ve totally revamped the Spring Fair offering for 2020. Following a similar and successful re-edit of Autumn Fair 2019, we’ve completely overhauled the show floor layout to create two dedicated buying locations – Gifts and Home & Living. Across both destinations there will be 16 carefully curated show sectors filled with new exhibitors, product ranges and business opportunities. Spring Fair’s re-edit will help visitors to gain insight into the kinds of products that are likely to captivate attention-poor consumers, as well as help them to better realise the cross-buying opportunities that can enable them to diversify their offering to customers.

How should visitors best navigate the new layout? Alongside our Little Black Book, we’ve also updated our matchmaking and personal show-planning platform – the Spring Fair Match app. We know how

time-poor visitors can be when they come to Spring Fair, but with Spring Fair Match we’re enabling more streamlined networking and a tailored AI-driven system for connecting visitors with the exhibitors and products most relevant for them. At the touch of a button, visitors will also have access to the all-new interactive floorplan, making it easier than ever to navigate the new layout. In addition, as part of our collaboration with trend consultants Colour Hive, all of Spring Fair’s sectors will have their own unique identifying colour scheme. These colours will fill the entrances, carpets and signage and will be key in helping visitors to navigate the show. Visitors also shouldn’t forget to scan the Pinterest boards in the entrances for inspirational product and trend insights. Also, with the introduction of a pocket map for onsite, it’s fair to say we have a few things to help visitors’ experiences be as smooth and streamlined as possible!

How important is the issue of sustainability at the show? Over the past few years many in the sector have been struck by the groundswell of demand from consumers for more responsibly sourced and sustainable products and business models. Retailers have begun to respond. But there’s so much more we could be doing, not only because pushing for greater sustainability

For 2020 the show will be unlimited by international borders for the first time, with the introduction of a new Sourcing sector. With visitors having some amazing successes with the Sourcing hall at Autumn Fair 2019, we wanted to bring the same concept to Spring Fair, albeit on an even bigger scale. The new hall will give buyers the opportunity to explore markets outside of the UK and make connections with the best manufacturers from key sourcing regions around the world. All without the need to spend excessive amounts on travelling to those destinations.

presents a unique business opportunity for our exhibitors, but also because it’s the right thing to do. This year’s show will help eco-conscious visitors to understand where their efforts would be best placed and what alternative products can help them to make a difference. As part of this, we’ll be playing host to a dedicated at-show sustainability trail that will make it easier than ever before for visitors to connect with ethically and environmentally conscious suppliers. We want to highlight the brands that are striving to do their part to future-proof the retail sector. Ahead of the show, visitors can visit our website and view exhibitors’ sustainability stories, their initiatives, pledges for the year and the sustainable products they will be showcasing. We’re also working to expand the show’s sustainability advocacy initiative with the launch of our Power of One Transparency Award – created to support, encourage and highlight brands who are making positive supply chain decisions and those that have established rigorous ethical standards to help protect the planet.

Club, which is designed to recognise and reward loyal visitors, as well as make their show experiences more memorable.

Why should buyers visit the show this year? Spring Fair is the season’s best opportunity to source 2020-21’s biggest products in gift retail with around 2500 exhibitors across all sectors. It’s the most effective way to engage with the largest group of influential exhibitors and product trendsetters in the UK and European retail sourcing markets. As a show, it’s come to prove itself to be truly indispensable to the retail community – it’s vital for visitors looking to plan their year ahead. It’s the perfect chance to meet your market. There is no other show like it.

Where to start?! We always pride ourselves at Spring & Autumn Fair for our agenda-setting seminar programmes, so picking out ‘highlights’ can be a tall order. We have three theatres, including the allnew Design & Source Stage. 2020 is going to be a particularly special show however with both Mary Berry and Mary Portas leading the line-up. We’re really looking forward to Mary Berry’s Q&A on the Inspiring Retail stage – she’ll be discussing how following her passion for cooking has opened doors and surprising opportunities throughout her career. Mary Portas will be back by popular demand, following her well-received fireside chat at Autumn Fair last year. She’ll be talking about the values she explores in her latest book, Work like a Woman. Its not all about the celebrities though – we have some incredible brand speakers from the likes of Waitrose, Oliver Bonas, Selfridges and Monsoon. They’ll be covering off all the essential, on-future and scale-certain trends you need to know about in 2020.

On a personal level, what are you most looking forward to? No matter what corner of the retail market you’re souring for, trends drive everything at Spring Fair. So this year I’m really excited to be able to work with our show trend partners Colour Hive again. Having been a hit with visitors at Autumn Fair, the colour trend experts will be back for Spring Fair to explore what shades and tones will be catching the eye of consumers throughout the year.

What’s new at the show? What isn’t new? As part of our ‘Hello New!’ 2020 show theme, we’ve refreshed and re-edited so much of the show. We have new features across the show, including the Party Playground, Barista Bar, Winter Wonderland Café and an all-new Sourcing Sector. We’ve been working really hard since Spring Fair 2019 to reassess how we can ensure that the show really caters to the demands of the industry. One of the highlights for Spring Fair 2020 will be the introduction of The Club Platinum, our Hosted Buyers programme. We know that Spring Fair can be a hectic time for buyers and the pressure is often on to find the best new products for the whole year ahead in just four days. That’s what’s behind the decision to launch The Club Platinum. With the new programme, qualifying visitors will have the very best of the show brought to them, ensuring that they are able to get face-to-face time with the right suppliers and make the most of their show experience. As part of this we’ll be hosting speed-networking sessions to help make the buying experience a more efficient one. We have also revamped our VIP programme, The Gifts Today 29

Become tamed by Parlane’s wild safari collection full of the big five but with a special focus on big cats, especially the leopard. The beautifully poised gold felines inject a feeling of decadence and elegance in to any interior setting. Shortlisted for The Gift of Year 2020 awards, the pot hangers drape over the edge of pots and vases to help liven up your indoor flower displays and plants. The matching pot feet sit neatly underneath pots to make them more interesting whilst the beautiful leopard shelf sitter would look fantastic hanging over the edge of shelves and occasional tables. See the full spring/ summer 2020 collection and celebrate Parlane’s 50th anniversary with a glass of bubbly at Spring Fair.

Flamboyant Pampas Get creative by adding Parlane’s real pampas grass to your floral displays. Available in two colourways, natural and blush pink, there’s nothing to rival the feathery, textured heads of this grass. They have an incredibly soft texture but their flamboyant form provides amazing drama. Parlane have attached the real heads to artificial stems to provide greater flexibility and make them sturdier and more practical to work with. Pampas grass is perfect for tall vases but for the more ambitious it is the perfect medium to create superb floral sculptures. Experience how Parlane have creatively displayed their comprehensive range of floral stems and greenery, alongside the rest of the spring/summer 2020 collection, at Spring Fair. In a nostalgic mid-century world, every day out for the bunnies is a day filled with wonder, enjoyment and possibilities. Their latest jaunt takes them to the Aloha state where sun, sand and surf awaits. The Surf’s Up 3R photo frame features the little long-eared holiday goers rip some epic North Shore waves on classic longboards. Help little hands get to grips with mealtimes with the Aloha cutlery set. This child-friendly fork and spoon set tackles apple sauce and baked beans with ease. Also included are a music box featuring the tune Blue Hawaii; Surfie container, which takes the shape of a Kombi surf van; and a tooth box which features an ukulele-playing bunny with a Polynesian drum.

The British Museum Inspired by the artefacts of The British Museum, the titular collection returns with more exciting new additions. The Lewis Chess Set features replicas of the famed Lewis Chessmen trove found on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Crafted in the 12th century, their distinct expressions which range from contemplative kings, compassionate queens to fierce looking shield-biting warriors lend an emotive quality to a chess game. The chessmen’s unique zoomorphic motifs are also reinterpreted into contemporary tableware and drinkware. Sinuous serpents in pewter, taken from a bishop chess piece, coil around a half-pint glass fashioned after that most evocative of the period’s vessels, the drinking horn. Other items include a bottle stopper, tankard, pepper shaker and votive.

Creating a sustainable 2020 Keel Toys

Hall 5, stand E30-F31 Keel Toys are recognised around the world by the iconic red disc in the ear of each toy, their seal of quality and value. As the first step of Keel’s new sustainability initiative, they are delighted to announce that, starting from their November factory shipments, all items will now carry a new Keel Toy icon formed from FSC cardboard, saving plastic on the millions of toys they sell each year. Single use plastics and bottles have become one of the hot topics over the last few years resulting in the increased use of recycled polyester. Recycled polyester, also known as rPET, is obtained by first collecting bottles and other plastic waste and cleaning them. The cleaned bottles are then shredded into pellets. To create the yarn the pellets are crushed and melted which are spun into thread. This process gives plastic a second life and uses 59% less energy to produce than virgin polyester. Just to give an example, 16 water bottles will produce enough fibre to make a 30cm toy. While much attention is given to rPET made from plastic bottles and containers thrown away by consumers, in reality polyethylene terephthalate can be recycled from both post-industrial and post-consumer input materials. Keel are proud to say they have already phased in the 100% use of recycled polyester stuffing in all their toys. The next step for them was to design a fully sustainable range…

Introducing keeleco: keeleco is the new 100% recycled range from Keel Toys. These eco-friendly toys are manufactured and stuffed with 100% recycled polyester from plastic waste. Weighted with recycled glass beads, these floppy toys have been perfectly designed for hugging by a loving new friend. Traditional glass eyes have been replaced with cotton embroidered eyes which give a unique, and playful character to these Eco soft toys. The iconic Keel symbol and hang tag are now formed from FSC card and attached to the toy with cotton. Even the sew-in label is recycled, and all are manufactured in an ICTI ethically audited factory. keeleco features endangered animals from the four corners of the world

including, Turtle, Sloth, Tiger, Snow Leopard, Panda, Blue Whale, Great Apes and Polar Bear to name a few. For Eco awareness, the range will be clearly labelled with the sustainable message and offered with a variety of retail solutions. Keel’s aim is that their customers can promote a sustainable Christmas in 2020. 100% recycled, 100% huggable. Signature Cuddle Puppies launched in 2019 with their unique puppy dog eyes have been added to with Corgi and a Dalmatian further enhancing the extensive range. These super cute eyes have been applied to their fabulous Signature Wild Cats, Lion, Snow Leopard Tiger, Cheetah and White Tiger with amazing effect. Pugsley, Keel’s fashion pooch, has a new pal Frenchie the loveable French Bulldog. Frenchie loves nothing better than being at the seaside with novelty Ice cream cone, lolly and rubber ring.

Quality pewter Royal Selangor Hall 3, stand F28 Royal Selangor is the world’s foremost name in quality pewter. From tableware, drinkware to personal accessories, each piece combines a tradition of craftsmanship and modern techniques. The pewter brand exports to more than 20 countries, and has its own retail stores in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia.

About Pewter Pewter is malleable and ductile, making it a medium of choice in art and design. It is a very easy metal to work with and lends itself well to elaborate detailing. Its finishing ranges from a traditional soft lustre to a brilliant finish, rivalling that of silver. In addition, well maintained pewterware tends to develop a pleasing subdued tone unique to the metal over time and with use, providing a unique ‘heirloom’ element to a home. At Royal Selangor, pieces are cast from high quality pewter which consists of 9297% tin, with a small proportion of copper and antimony added to strengthen the alloy – the highest international standard for pewter. Stronger than spun pewter, products have a solid heft and features a high level of sculpting detail, consistent finish and brilliant shine.

History and Heritage The story of Royal Selangor goes back to 1885 when a young pewtersmith named Yong Koon sailed from the port of Shantou to Kuala Lumpur. The discovery of tin in Malaya had lured him and thousands of other Chinese, to the fledgling tin mining town where he joined his brothers who had established themselves as tinsmiths. For many years, Yong Koon enjoyed brisk business making simple household items of tin, operating from his shop at No. 23 Cross Street. He later ventured into making pewter incense burners, joss stick holders and candlestands for the altars of wealthy tin miners and Chinese temples. Employing a few other craftsmen, he was among the first pewtersmiths in Kuala Lumpur.

Design and Craftsmanship Royal Selangor offers over a thousand different tableware and gift items, from traditional tankards to contemporary homeware and personal accessories. Always staying ahead of the curve, the company has received coveted industry accolades

including a Gift of the Year Award from the Giftware Association of the United Kingdom and a Red Dot Award for Product Design from Germany’s Design Zentrum.

Award-Winning Designs and Collaborations The company is inspired by cultural treasures from the world’s leading museums such as the British Museum and V&A Museum to create collaborative designs that combine the old and the new. Royal Selangor has also worked together with partners such as The Walt Disney Company and Warner Brothers to commemorate popular culture franchises such as Star Wars, Marvel, Disney Princesses, Toy Story and Batman. The company has also collaborated with Leica to produce a special pewter edition camera.

Special Commissions Royal Selangor also custom-makes exclusive pieces for corporations and individuals. Its trophies have graced the winners’ podium for world class events such as the World Cup Golf 1999, 16th Commonwealth Games, Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 and the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Malaysia and Singapore.

About Comyns One of the oldest and most prestigious silversmiths from the United Kingdom, the Comyns hallmark can be traced back to the 17th century. The silver brand began by specialising in decorative tableware and later become renowned for its interpretative works, particularly of Paul de Lamerie, regarded by many as the greatest silversmith in 18th century England. Soap opera Heyland & Whittle Hall 3, stand R50 When you pick up your bar of Heyland & Whittle traditional soap or use some of their liquid body wash, you probably don’t think much about the thousands of years of evolution that have gone into them.

The start of soap There is evidence that soap-like substances were used as early as 2800 BC, with a material found in clay cylinders during the excavation of ancient Babylon. This soap was made from animal fats that were boiled with ashes, creating a product that was effective but not necessarily great smelling. It was primarily used for cleaning utensils and to wash wool for the textile industry.

Increasing popularity of soap While soap started to be more common by around 600 AD, it wasn’t until the 8th century that it was mass-produced with factories built in Italy, France and Spain. Soap prices finally started to fall after 1791 when a new process was discovered for soap making. A Frenchman called LeBlanc found that certain alkalines reacted with the fats used in soap making to result in a finished product quicker and easier.

Heyland & Whittle’s soap At Heyland & Whittle, they make their solid soaps according to a traditional recipe that includes natural oils, an alkaline and essential oils. This results in lovely soft and gentle soap that smells amazing and is incredibly effective. Using the unique Heyland & Whittle recipe, only the purest ingredients, including a vast array of essential oils, herbs and spices, are blended to create these handmade soaps. They use only natural colouring such as madder root, walnut leaves, nettle leaves and turmeric. When the soap is ready, it is hand cut and weighed into the different shapes and sizes so it is ready for packaging. In fact, it is the job of just one person to cut and weigh every single piece of soap. The soap is then boxed up into individual packages, all ready for the final stage of its journey - getting sent out to you.

Spring Fair

Posh Paws Hall 5, stand F24 Gifts Today caught up with Lauren Shipman, Group Brand and Marketing Director of Posh Paws, to see what the firm has on offer and why they see Spring Fair as a tent pole event in the calendar Established in 2007, Posh Paws is one of the leading manufacturers and distributors of licensed plush toys. The company is recognised by buyers across the retail landscape for delivering quality product to the market in both toy and gift categories. The product portfolio includes some of highest performing entertainment licences and international brands from the Despicable Me and Trolls plus lots, lots more. Added to this are key gift collections perfect for those treading the halls at Spring Fair.

Is Spring Fair an important show for you?

It certainly is and never more so than this year. Our collections have traditionally spanned toy and gift but the 2020 portfolio is a true representation of Posh Paw’s firm commitment to service the gift market. Plush is such an emotive purchase and is ideal for those browsing local gifts shops, traditional toyshops, department stores and garden centres. Spring Fair offers us the ideal opportunity for us to talk with those retailers.

What’s new on the stand?

This year we have the licensed collections you would expect to see from Posh Paws including Minions, Trolls and Sunny Bunnies ready for the spring/summer film releases. Added to this, are some true gift lines, such as a brand new fun and quirky Love Hearts collection, our delightfully traditional Ragtales toy range, plus there is a sparkly new bear in town, with the introduction of Bailey Bear an exclusive gift plush embellished with Swarovski Crystals.

‘The 2020 portfolio is a true representation of Posh Paw’s firm commitment to service the gift market’

Love Hearts, is that a new sweetheart in your portfolio?

We first introduced Love Hearts at the fairs last year, with the first products being marketed in the summer. 2020 however, will see a much wider range being introduced. This collection is colourful, instantly recognisable and appeals to a huge section of the market from smaller children through to adults. The fun and quirky messages mean different things to different people and create an instant reason for someone to pick them up and carry them to the till. We’ve also introduced some fun themes that will further widen the appeal such as our Foodie inspired Love Hearts range.

Where do you see Chic & Love sitting in the gift market?

It’s a higher end plush gift purchase and is perfect for special occasions such as christenings, anniversaries, weddings and a special Valentine’s gift. The packaging is beautifully made and the genuine Swarovski Crystals and holograms label adds even more kudos to the range. We see this in jewellers, gift shops and garden centres, and we have an exciting marketing campaign to reflect this.

How has BBC Earth performed?

It’s had a tremendous start and has performed very well across the board. It’s definitely a plush purchase that’s not just for the kids, as our analysis shows that this is being bought for adult fans of the BBC Earth franchise too. This year we are launching a new baby animals range bringing with them a definite ahh! appeal. Importantly though, as part of this launch, Posh Paws will introduce stuffing made from 100% recycled post-consumer waste, PET plastic (plastic bottles) and packaging made using 100% recycled FSC certified craft paper and using soy-based inks.

Why is the independent gift trade important to you?

Gift shops, gift departments within garden centres, emporiums and attraction stores are the ideal place for the consumer to pick up a plush toy as a gift for themselves, or for someone close to them. This reason alone makes the whole industry important to our company.

What can you offer smaller gift stores?

When you and your customers purchase a Posh Paws soft toy you can be assured that you will be getting a premium quality product that meets the highest toy safety standards but still at an affordable price. Added to that is the depth of our ranges, that are instantly recognisable to the consumer. We are also able to offer great terms and smaller carriage paid terms for independents, which in this day and age is important to ensure they can be competitive against larger retailers. Colour is Queen Miss Milly

Hall 1, stand H21 Miss Milly, the British brand for gorgeous jewellery and scarves, has an established reputation for its stunning use of colour. And Spring Fair will be no exception with a huge splash of mint and aqua, next season’s big colour, alongside the pastel trend and its own favourite bright tones. As a result of growth, Miss Milly has increased its stand size, refreshed the décor and, as usual, carried out a huge revamp of the ranges. You will always find new on this stand. The company’s creative use of resin and how different backings affect the depth and tone of colour means that a new colourway for a necklace can make it look really different with finishes including marble, shell, aluminium foil, iridescent and metallic fabric. And with other materials, such as hand painting, enamel and matt and shiny metals, there is a huge variety of designs available. Scarves are still key for gift and accessories buyers, and Miss Milly is launching a limited selection of scarf pins, a range which they hope will be as popular as their magnetic brooches, a big hit in 2019 with new designs to be launched. The brand’s colour block scarves, embellished with glitter and sequins, work in tandem with the jewellery creating exciting visual displays, co-ordinating or clashing. With a stunning array of bold but easy-to-wear designs featuring flowers, hearts, leaves and abstract and geometric patterns, the latest Miss Milly collection is the most eye-catching to date and still as reasonably priced as ever. The minimum order is a low £100 and everything can be bought in singles so you get exactly what you need. Branded display stands, packaging and POS are available to help create an in-store Miss Milly story and the company is always at the end of the phone for friendly help and advice.

Lovett & Co Hall 1, stand H73

2020 marks Lovett & Co’s 10th anniversary of creating and designing beautiful vintage inspired jewellery and accessories from its base just outside Brighton. The brand started from very humble beginnings, founder Rachel Lovett worked out of her kitchen building up a small team until she was able to move to offices in 2014 to a most fitting historical building in Brighton. In 2015 Rachel won The Forward Ladies’ Women in Business Award for the South East region and is currently shortlisted for The Gift of the Year 2020 award. Previous to this Rachel worked in fashion buying for the likes of House of Fraser and Arcadia where she gained her experience in retail and sourcing. Every piece tells its own unique story. Rachel has a real passion for the past and takes her inspiration and references from the decadence of the 1920s to the fun and fabulous 1950s through items found in vintage fairs, antique stores and treasures given with love. Designing in this way ensures vintage authenticity is at the heart of everything Lovett & Co do. Bestselling items include pieces inspired by Audrey Hepburn in her iconic role in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, colourful 1950s jewel pieces and statement jewellery inspired by the Art Deco period. All of the jewellery and accessories are lovingly handmade and come with their own bespoke branded packaging. All are hypoallergenic and nickel-free. Other ranges include Love Luxe, a collection of contemporary and modern pieces that can be worn day to night, and Forever Bridal, an exquisite premium collection of standout pieces, perfect for that very special day. The brand is currently stocked in a wide range of outlets from small designer boutiques to museums and gift shops. Lovett & Co will be showcasing their new SS 2020 collection of fresh colours and flora and fauna inspired pieces alongside their other ranges at the Spring Fair at the NEC this February. Trade Talk

InStyle contributors talk Spring Fair and what’s on trend in the world of fashion jewellery Stephen Thurlow

Alexander Thurlow Why are you exhibiting at Spring Fair this year? Â

It’s just a wonderful platform to meet new customers, chin wag with the old and show off your new hot sellers.

What’s the big news on your stand? Flowers, flowers, flowers!

Big trends you’ve spotted for 2020?   Too early to say but surviving is key.

Survival tips for the show? Snow chains for the obligatory blizzard on the last day. Â

Sarah Watmore

Miss Milly

Why are you exhibiting at Spring Fair? It’s our best show of the year and where we have our biggest stand. There is always a great feeling of freshness after the hard work of Christmas and the dullness of January.

What’s the big news this year? We’ve changed the configuration and layout of the Miss Milly stand, which is always good to do when you move halls. We’ve added sparkly design elements to it and are looking forward to getting the new pieces on show. It’s our largest range of ‘new’ in the eight years we’ve been trading.

Big trends you’ve spotted for 2020? Neo Mint has been a big predicted trend for SS20 and it’s a gorgeous colour, really fresh and sits perfectly in with other coastal colours. Living Coral was last year’s focus colour and these trends don’t die, they evolve. It’s a beautiful colour for jewellery and accessories, so we’ve kept both coral and peach as key in our range. Llamas have conquered the earth and must be near the end of their reign. I saw something somewhere about camels, just as comical to look at! Bees and dragonflies have been very popular, and we’ve got new brooches to launch for both insects.

Classic Canes Hall 1, stand N22-P23 Walking stick specialists Classic Canes are celebrating their 31st consecutive Spring Fair and looking forward to seeing customers old and new at their new location. New for this spring are petite size adjustable and folding canes in the best-selling Monet’s water lily pattern, produced in association with the National Gallery. MD Charlotte Gillan explains: ‘Our range of National Gallery sticks, including artwork by van Gogh and Stubbs among others, has sold terrifically well both in the UK and overseas. We have now expanded the range to include these petite models, which are scaled down to suit smaller walking stick users.’ Classic Canes will also be showcasing many other models from their 700+ range of walking sticks, seat sticks and umbrellas. ‘Contemporary patterns such as cats, skulls and forest creatures have been very popular lately, allowing our stockists to offer fashionable alternatives to the classic patterns such as florals and paisleys. ‘There are many younger stick users now so it is important that retailers offer a range of styles to suit different age groups in order to maximise sales. We will have more new patterns coming out during the course of 2020 so our stockists will have the latest designs in the walking stick world.’

Cello Ultrasonics feature the same relaxing benefits and are available in four designs including Frosted Petals and Marble Teardrop, while Aroma Fan Ultrasonics are in Dome and Pebble shapes. Spring Fair Portmeirion Group

Tabletop stories In the run-up to Spring Fair and Ambiente, we caught up with Phil Atherton, Group Sales & Marketing Director of Portmeirion Group, about Spode’s 250th anniversary and the company’s acquisition of US premium housewares company Nambé

Spode 250th anniversary Spode celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2020 – what an achievement! What makes the brand so special and able to stand the test of time like this? The history of Spode is truly extraordinary and its contribution to the British ceramics industry is immeasurable. Josiah Spode I founded the pottery in 1770 after years mastering the trade as a potter’s apprentice in Stoke-on-Trent, England. A father and son business, the Spode name quickly became renowned for the finest craftsmanship and cutting edge designs, a legacy that lasts to this very day. From the very day it was founded, Spode has focused on its customer and its people. We maintain this philosophy today. This focus has meant that Spode consistently delivers on the things our

customers hold in high regard, such as timeless designs and the finest quality. How does it feel as a company to be the guardian of a range with such lineage? It’s quite a responsibility! It is of critical importance that we at Portmeirion Group continue to develop the Spode brand in the same manner as its forebears. We’ve looked deep into Spode’s history and values to make sure the legacy lives on for another 250 years. Spode was always a great innovator, it was known for the finest craftsmanship and as an authority on style. We intend to continue this mantra and see ourselves as the custodians of the brand. What are the special challenges you face when dealing with such a brand? When you focus on what the customer wants from a brand, you only really see opportunities rather than challenges. Spode’s rich heritage means that we have a wonderful abundance of archive designs to inspire our new launches and there’s a genuine affection for the brand amongst our target audience. As long as we continue to understand our customer and deliver on Spode’s unique values, Spode will remain a coveted British brand. How do you go about attracting younger buyers to the range? Ultimately for any business, the focus has to be on the customer. What does the customer want? How does the customer live? How does the customer want to buy? If the customer sits at the heart of the business, as it does in Spode/Portmeirion Group, and you know your brand inside out, it is possible to attract a new audience. There’s always plenty of debate but we believe in our brands and what they offer and we respect our customers too, young or young at heart. Focusing on how our brands meet customer needs enables us to appeal to all our target customer groups. What are your bestselling ranges? Christmas Tree continues to be Spode’s biggest selling collection across the globe but particularly in the USA and UK. Quite an achievement when you consider that it’s a seasonal collection.

The quintessentially British Blue Italian collection is another best-seller but Spode is renowned for its modern take on heritage design so other ranges like Ruskin House and Kingsley do well. Spode’s Morris & Co. collaboration marks the coming together of two British heritage brands. Needless to say, the result was a spectacular collection that was a real success story in 2019. We’ll continue to reinvent this partnership with new designs and products in 2020. What will you be launching at Spring Fair? 2020 is a big year for Spode. There are new ranges like Heritage, Sunflower and Black Italian – all of which are archive designs that have been remastered for the modern day, as well as new introductions that are perfect for today’s lifestyles. Gifting remains of vital importance to us as a business as we grow our brands. You’ll find stunning gift boxes that not only look great in store but also show the customer that the product can be gifted. Any other celebrations for Spode’s 250th anniversary this year? It’s going to be such an exciting year for Spode. We’re on a mission to spread our love of Spode across the globe. Through our extensive and comprehensive marketing campaign we’ll be engaging with new audiences and reigniting the love of Spode in existing customers. Working with a renowned international marketing agency, we’ll be creating the world’s biggest tea party through social media and asking people to steal the show with Spode. It’s a really interactive and exciting campaign

Nambé acquisition and launch that will get people talking and experiencing the joy of using Spode products. After all, life tastes better when sipped from Spode! We will also be launching an anniversary gin to celebrate the occasion. The gin will be used in gift sets as well as been sold separately to some of our key trade partners. We also plan to develop a Spode cocktail that can be drank from our ceramic wares as it was back in the days of prohibition!

Portmeirion Group acquired US premium housewares company Nambé in 2019. What attracted you to the brand? Nambé is a fantastic brand with a solid American provenance. It was a huge influence in the rise of the mid-century modern design movement in the 1950s and has maintained its position as a leader in this market. Portmeirion Group has ambitious growth plans and acquiring brands with provenance and design heritage is pivotal to our success. Nambé has heritage and provenance in ample supply. Its design ethos and solid positioning has added real value to Portmeirion Group’s portfolio of brands taking us into new categories. What territories does Nambé perform well in at the moment? And what areas do you have targeted for the next few years? Nambé has had great success in its home market of the USA and has had demand from other international markets. Its distribution network as a stand-alone business was limited however now in the Portmeirion Group family, Nambé is in a strong position and can optimise sales across all global markets.

Get in touch • Spring Fair, Hall 8, stand A60-B61 • Ambiente, Hall 4.1, stand D05

What plans do you have for the brand? Nambé is a successful brand and we’ll continue on this journey. Its signature style is its mix of its unique alloy, acacia wood and glass. Style, form and function take equal importance with any product design from Nambé. For example, the sleek and stylish wine chiller can be placed in the freezer for 30 minutes and will stay cold and keep wine chilled for many hours. The cheese board with cheese knife also features a hidden magnet to keep the knife safe and tidy. Nambé also collaborates with esteemed and experienced designers such as Karim Rashid and Robin Levien. Nambé’s design team in Santa Fe and New York work hard to identify customer demand and create new products and collections working hand in hand with their roster of designers who bring mid-century modern design to the home in exciting but functional ways. What launches are there for the brand? As we introduce the brand to new markets, Nambé’s key product ranges will be launched. Customers will see Nambé’s signature mix of alloy,

wood and glass pieces across serve ware, barware, cutlery and gifts. Finally, why Spring Fair? Why is it so important for you as a company? Trade shows are the ideal platform to showcase our new ranges and products as well as enabling us to listen to our customers about the opportunities they have and the challenges they face at a time when people are really focused. It is a fantastic opportunity to talk to our customers about the year ahead, what they have planned and what we have planned.

Fun for all Fizz Creations

Hall 4, stand F30-G31 They’re pretty excited for 2020 at Fizz. Not not only are they celebrating their 10th birthday, they’re also launching their biggest range of games ever. As staying in becomes the new going out, we’ve seen the games market go from strength to strength and Fizz Creations are lucky to have some real game enthusiasts on their product development team. In fact, most break times you’ll find a huddle of the team engrossed in some game or another. They have two core game lines - MAD CAP Games and The Games Room.

MAD CAP Games They’re bold! They’re bright! They’re silly! They’re MAD CAP Games - fun for all the family. The active game play across the whole range has proved a massive hit with buyers and customers – so much so, that Fizz Creations are launching two new titles this year. 1. Twerk Pong remains as popular as ever and was joined by Floss Pong last summer– same concept just a different dance move! And their autumn launch, Sumo Squats, was a massive hit over Christmas as players don a sumo belt and race to squat and hook their sumos into their own coloured ring. 2. Bull in China Shop, where friends challenge each other to swing their bull’s tail to be the first to knock over all their china and Tiny Skeleton Hands that sees players attempt to perform simple task only with a pair of skeleton hands. With seven products, the MAD CAP Games line up offers a complete party games range.

The Games Room The Games Room welcomes quite the collection of new games. With trendy illustrations, created by the in-house design teams, and diverse gameplay combining fun and strategy for all ages. You won’t want to miss their hilarious Flies with More Interesting Lives game – that combines quick draw gameplay with a novel twist – draw the scenarios and finish your illustration with a fly! Three scenario cards select • WHAT - Racing a go-kart • WHERE - In a graveyard • WITH - A balloon • And finish with a fly…. Challenge yourself to a modern-day murder mystery with their vibrant Murder on the Dance Floor game – coming in 2020. Players battle it out to identify who committed the ghastly crime, where it happened, the murder weapon and the reason. For instance: Quincy Quickfoot – killer dance moves – disco dancefloor - they wore the same outfit. There’s also a laugh a minute to be had with their comical Complete the Headline & Lyrics games where players battle to fill the blanks with the funniest answers. It’s fair to say they’ve had some good laughs with developing these two ranges – creating fun for everyone! Build your games range at Spring Fair! The more games you buy… the more you save!

Craig Skinner

UK Sales director, Royal Selangor Why are you exhibiting at Spring Fair?

It’s a must-do show that gives us the ideal platform for our new spring/summer ranges, enabling us to write lots of orders from existing customers and open numerous new accounts.

It’s the largest home and gift fair in UK and one of the most important trade fairs for gifts in Europe. It’s here where we touch base with retailers, department store buyers and other decision makers from all over the world. It’s the perfect opportunity to introduce our brand to potential customers from new markets.

What’s the big news on your stand?

What’s the big news on your stand?

We continue to innovate with our own Cello range. We will be showing groundbreaking products including a new Cello Candle Ultrasonic Diffuser that gives up to eight hours fragrance. It uses silent ultrasonic waves that work with water and natural essential oils to create a humidifying mist, with the relaxed mood enhanced by beautiful colour changing lights. We also have the revolutionary Bluetooth Ultrasonic Diffuser, in a variety of models, which uses Bluetooth technology and also has soothing colour-changing lights,

We’ve got a few exciting new collections to share with our visitors which includes a Hawaiian edition of our ever-popular Bunnies Day Out christening range, a Limited Edition Black Panther figurine in a costume which references the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda comic series, perfect for pop culture collectors and the iconic Lewis Chessmen themed chess set and assorted homeware, new additions to our existing British Museum collection.

Big trends you’ve spotted for 2020?

I can only see the public’s appetite for eco-friendly products increasing in 2020 and Xystos, through our partnerships, is well placed to meet this demand. At a time when traditional glass jar candle sales appear to be declining, end-users will continue to seek out more flameless fragrance solutions and turn to nature.

Big trends you’ve spotted for 2020?

Mix media homeware will become increasingly popular, as will collaborations between companies working with different mediums. Malleable metals such as pewter can be combined with other materials such as ceramic or wood to create striking, functional designs.

Why are you exhibiting at the show?

Big trends you’ve spotted for 2020?

It’s the must do show for us, it’s a major date in our diary. It gives us great opportunity to catch up with our customers and showcase our newness.

What’s the big news on your stand?

For the first time we are launching a very new product range of Perfume Mist Diffusers that we are very excited about.

The feather, both in form and texture is a huge trend. We have developed mirrors and light shades of ivory feathers. Feathery patterns and textures decorate all kinds of accessories and we are using feathery florals, like ferns and grasses. Pampas grass is an emerging fashion and can be used to create the most dramatic floral installations. There’s a special focus on big cats, especially the leopard, which we have a selection of in a gold finish.

Big trends you’ve spotted for 2020?

Neo Mint, a soft green oriental tone. Our new fragrance Oroblanco & Cardamom from our Luna collection picks this trend up perfectly. The fragrance is citrus based with warming spicy tones, a perfect spring scent to kick start the year. Soft tropics has been developing over the past few years now steps up a notch to Jungle Warrior with rich tonal colours, enlarged flower heads with the key palm leaf motif. Our new Urban Botanic fragrance Frangipani Neroli Blossom brings this tropical vibe to the home perfectly.

Steve Powell

Ashleigh & Burwood Why are you exhibiting at Spring Fair? It’s definitely the number one trade fair in the UK to be at and is an ideal venue and time of year to showcase our exciting new ranges and additions for 2020.

What’s the big news on your stand?

Our stand will flow into a lifestyle area where we are launching a new vibrant range called The Design Anthology; a Japanese themed area where we’ll be showing our limited edition, Japanese inspired fragrances which are very much on trend with the Olympics being held in Japan this year; and we’ll be previewing our Christmas ranges within our Ashleigh & Burwood Christmas Boutique which will feature the extremely successful Scented Home Christmas collection.

Big trends you’ve spotted for 2020?

Oriental, particularly Japanese inspired decorative pieces that are a statement home fragrance, and of course recyclable and environmentally kind products.

Gibsons love jigsaw puzzles, but appreciate that making and selling them affects the environment so are committed to reducing their impact on the world around us. On average, their boxes will be 29% smaller and removing the shrink-wrap will save 521,096m of plastic film per year (the same as the length of 4300 football pitches!) In addition, the puzzle boxes have a fresh new design that will be gradually rolled out across their entire range. Gibsons are adding seven new designs to their White Logo Collection. This is a range of design-led jigsaw puzzles for adults that are also kinder to the environment and designed and manufactured in the UK. Amongst the new releases are three 500pc designs including a celestial image, Written in the Stars, and Paper Flowers, a beautiful floral image created entirely from paper.

Spring into 2020 Parlane

Hall 20, stand C20-D21 Parlane, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of interior accessories, are looking forward to Spring Fair. They will be exhibiting a wonderful selection of their products on their stand in Hall 20, including 50 new items that are being launched at the show. And 2020 is their 50th anniversary, so to celebrate this wonderful milestone, they will be offering fizz and nibbles to visitors. The team at Parlane work incredibly hard, sourcing exciting and unusual ranges from around the world. Featured in the catalogue are a wide range of products that have been born out of traditional craftwork and natural materials from around the globe. Handmade techniques are used for many products, making each of these pieces unique. From faux plants and flowers to decorative accessories, and from vases and planters to furniture, the extensive range they have to offer ensures there is something to suit all tastes and styles of interior. One of the key looks for this year is Safari, packed full of animal prints, tribal inspiration and the big five. Natural earthy tones and handcrafted elements contrast against glamorous gold finishes and hints of bright florals, and of course there’s also plenty of lush greenery. The collection is full of exciting wild animals, with a special emphasis on big cats, especially the leopard. Parlane’s leopard pot hangers have been shortlisted for the Gift of the Year 2020 awards. These beautifully poised gold felines drape gracefully over the edge of pots and vases. The matching pot feet sit neatly underneath pots to make them more interesting whilst the elegant leopard shelf sitter would look fantastic hanging over the edge of shelves and occasional tables. Another popular theme is Mediterranean-style alfresco dining. Parlane’s catalogue includes a new range of beautifully decorated serveware that perfectly fits up this look. The pretty watercolour olive sprig design comes in two colourways to reflect both black and green olive varieties. The mini range consists of two sizes of serving bowls, salad servers, two sizes of nibble bowls, a chopping board, a tray and three sizes of planter.

Over the last 12 months University Games has merged with Paul Lamond Games and together the games and puzzle experts will be delivering over 70 new lines during 2020 including a number of very exciting new, and even magical, licences. New for 2020 will be a series of intricate 3D jigsaw puzzles under the new National Geographic licence. The highly detailed 3D puzzles, with easy to follow instructions, create beautiful replicas of famous pieces of British architecture including Big Ben, Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace. Continuing on the theme of 3D puzzles and following in the footsteps of the highly successful Game of Thrones puzzles range, University Games is launching a brilliant new 3D puzzle range of the iconic buildings from one of the most magical licences of all time. However, you will have to visit the Spring Fair stand to discover the stars of the next range of 3D Puzzles. A brilliant new fun addition to the family games portfolio will be Dart Face. This super funny but slightly crazy game brings the whole family together for some indoor or outdoor fun. This is darts with a twist… and a move, and a dodge! Dart Face will see the dart throwers aiming their darts a moving target, whilst the target or ‘Dart Face’ will see the world with slightly impaired vision, making dodging the darts hilariously tricky. There are also a number of great additions to the adult games’ portfolio launching this year including Don’t Drink & Draw, Bigger is Better, Life Hacks and IMO, all brilliant party games and perfect as gifts for those hard to buy for friends and relatives. As football fever sweeps the nation this summer with the return of the Euros, University Games, with their biggest campaign for 2020, will relaunch the new England Subbuteo Game. The media campaign will see TV spots targeting the football throughout the 2020 Euros as well as TV and social media in autumn/winter. All generations will love the new re-energised Subbuteo range with greatly improved detail including players with different colour football boots and hairstyles. There will also be some fantastic new Preschool lines from two new licences. There will be some fantastic new memory games and puzzles from First 100 Words and a board game and puzzles for the much-loved In the Night Garden.

Oriental delights Mandarin Arts

For spring 2020, Mandarin Arts have just unloaded two brand new lamps along with matching ginger jars and general jars. The design reflects a typical Chinese landscape of old, with people going about their everyday lives, fishing from boats or planting rice or crops in a field. There is a tall pagoda at the end of a promontory, mountains in the distance, seagulls circling overhead, a small hut, perhaps the home of a peasant or a hermit. As in many traditional Chinese scroll pictures, man is seen as vulnerable, dwarfed by nature which dominates the scene and which man knows will endure for thousands of years following his own short, transient life. The etched outline of the design on the porcelain along with the crackled celadon finish and the raised areas of blue and indented areas of brown glaze, all make the products cry out to be stroked. Mandarin Arts, a leading supplier of lighting and diverse Oriental products, would be happy to introduce you to their ranges and help with any projects you might have.
