elcome to Gift Today’s annual home fragrance supplement and my first as Editor. The promising news, having spoken to suppliers and retailers up and down the country, is that home fragrance appears to be as popular as ever. The interest in creating a pleasant ambience within the home, which rose during the first lockdowns when we were all spending time at home, has not waned. And even though we are all facing challenges such as the rising cost of living, the fact remains that home fragrance items offer an affordable way to treat our friends, family, and ourselves. Of course, as in most industries, consumer awareness about sustainability is shaping the evolution of home fragrance products. It’s something that the brand director of our cover star Paddywax talks about in our Trade Talk section on page 18. Cartter Stout says the company is bringing a ‘’compelling story for consumers about repurposing and sustainability’’. In the same article, Jacqui Gale MBE, chief executive of Wax Lyrical, echoes this sentiment, saying: “We draw inspiration from our home in the Lake District and continually strive to find sustainable solutions for all of our vessels, ingredients and packaging.” You’ll find sustainability, reusability and recycling mentioned by many suppliers interviewed for this supplement, from Ashleigh & Burwood on page 6
to St. Eval, which was honoured with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development in 2021, on page 32, and many others featured within our pages. As well as rounding up the best in new home fragrance products, I’ve also been lucky enough to talk to some fascinating people within the industry. Olivia Jezler, founder of scent innovation agency Future of Smell, confirms that people are continuing to use scent in their homes now more than ever before. She also offers tips on displaying home fragrance items - and shares her predictions for this year’s big scents. Retailers looking to make the most of the home fragrance offering in their stores should also read what Sara Allbright - former John Lewis home fragrance buyer and now founder and director of Retail100 Consulting - has to say about maximising your customers’ home fragrance experience. And talking of retailers, we have, of course, quizzed our readers to find out what products they stock and what’s selling particularly well for them at the moment, so you can get a snapshot of the home fragrance retail scene across the UK. So why not light your favourite fragranced candle or wax melt, relax, and enjoy our insight into this fascinating, innovative, and everevolving category! Editor, Clare Turner

It’s time to
celebrate spring! Ashleigh & Burwood
Ashleigh & Burwood presents a range of new products and fragrances that celebrate this time of year, which for many is their favourite of all the seasons
6 Gifts Today
To Ashleigh & Burwood’s collection that evokes the essence of springtime all year round - Life in Bloom - the company has added three cheery new scents: Lotus Flower & Watermelon, Wisteria & White Woods, and Orange Blossom & Mandarin - each assigned a bright, uplifting colour from a palette of vibrant shades. Available in the new fragrances are Scented Candles, Lamp Fragrance (with Fragrance Lamps in matching colours) and Floral Reed Diffusers and Diffuser Refills. The Floral Reed Diffusers, which have proved particularly popular, combine white fibre reeds with stems of coloured gypsophila flowers, for a striking and original diffuser aesthetic. In fact, it was this product that inspired the collection, and a motif of the gypsophila flower is carried through on the colourful artwork decorating the collection’s packaging. As with other collections of Ashleigh & Burwood, the reusability of the products is considered, and a full range of diffuser refills is offered to top up the fragrance. These are packaged in a bottle made of 30% recycled material, which can be recycled by adding to the household recycling. Also new for this season, Diffuser Flower Refills (along with replacement reeds) are available in the six original colours, meaning that the glass diffuser vessels can be reused again and again, with the fragrance, reeds, and now decorative flowers available to purchase individually. Another new product with sustainability at the heart of its making is the new Frosted Earth Lamp Fragrance - capturing the aromatic fragrance of icy landscapes marbled
with the flow of revitalising waters. For a fragrance experience that benefits customers and the planet, the new scent uses a special, sustainable ECOBOOST formulation that reduces the fragrance’s carbon footprint. Using highly potent raw materials to produce stronger fragrances, less of the concentrated scent is needed to create the highly fragranced products that Ashleigh & Burwood’s customers love. The result is a reduction in the amount of energy used in the manufacturing process, which is kinder to the planet. EcoBoost is a registered trademark of CPL Aromas. The fragrance is available individually in 250ml and 500ml bottles and is also included within four new Fragrance Lamp Gift Sets, packaged in stylish silver gift boxes and featuring colourful new glass mosaic lamp designs, inspired by the beauty of planet Earth. One further product to launch this season is wax melts, added to Ashleigh & Burwood’s Earth Secrets collection. Blending natural ingredients into affordable home scenting solutions, the collection has, to this point, consisted of petit reed diffusers and cute tin candles. The new wax melts add a third way for users to infuse their home with the nature-inspired scents of the collection. Small but mighty, the wax melts are crafted from a highly fragranced soy wax blend to ensure long-lasting fragrance release. Shaped in the form of adorable hearts for a joyful decorative touch, just a couple of wax melts added to an oil burner will quickly bring a beautiful aroma to a room. Each tin is crammed with enough hearts for around 50 melts, giving many hours of beautiful fragrance.

TRENDS HOME FRAGRANCE HOME FRAGRANCE
Homing in on the gift appeal of fragrance products Home fragrance has experienced a boom since the onset of the pandemic - and people continue to use scents in their home now more than ever before, says Future of Smell founder Olivia Jezler What’s your background? I studied design at Parson School of Design in New York and worked at top global fragrance companies to develop scents for fine fragrance, candles, and personal care products for FMCG [fast-moving consumer goods], niche and luxury brands. I also worked in brand strategy for Natura & Co (owner of premium skincare brand Aesop) and had a research fellowship at the University of Sussex in the UK, where I studied the interconnectedness of our senses and ways to create experiences through smell and technology.
Tell us about Future of Smell. Future of Smell is a scent innovation agency. We

help companies envision future scent products and experiences, merging human needs with cutting-edge research. We offer scent and experience development for products and environments, which can be retail spaces, hospitality, and even ecommerce. Experiences can be fragrance discovery and new ways of using scents. The scents we design together with top perfumers and suppliers, are built to reflect a brand, and the emotions and memories they aim to be remembered by.
How are sales of home fragrance performing? Home fragrance has experienced a boom since the onset of the pandemic and people continue to use scents in their home now more than ever before.
“Home fragrance products are very giftable as they are decorative objects that can easily transform the experience of a space and a home - and they last longer than flowers!”
“Home fragrance is a growing category and is easy for customers to buy into - far more so than perfumes. People don’t overthink home fragrance as much as perfumes, due to their relatively accessible price”
About Future of Smell Future of Smell helps brands design sensory experiences through research-backed custom fragrance design and smell-based technologies. CREDIT iStockphoto.com
Why should a gift retailer consider stocking home fragrance products? Home fragrance is a growing category and is easy for customers to buy into - far more so than perfumes. People don’t overthink home fragrance as much as perfumes, due to their relatively accessible price. Also, home scent is less tied to one’s personal identity; it’s a decorative element that can be changed throughout the day and with the seasons. Home fragrance products are also very giftable as they are decorative objects that can easily transform the experience of a space and a home - and they last longer than flowers!
How can a gift retailer build customer loyalty through scent? As a retailer, using a scent that reflects your brand and identity - either sprayed on packaging or through a scent insert that can be placed inside a gift bag or shipping box - can add a whole new dimension to a customer’s unboxing
experience, allowing them to form an emotional bond even if they have never walked into your store. The more senses are engaged, the more memorable an experience becomes.
Can you share any tips on the best ways to display home fragrance items in-store? Categorising scent products based on smell could be helpful, starting with the lightest scent and working up to the stronger woods and resins. If a person likes the smell of more floral scents, it makes it easier to smell and compare this way, than smelling by brand. Also, highlight the fragrance notes. Although they may be written on the packaging, highlighting them again on a display will make it easier for people to read and emotionally connect with the fragrance. Furthermore, the products should be easily smellable. I would leave them open: use a glass dome or a cover (such as paper) on candles, which can easily be removed, as candle wax covered with dust is not so pleasant to look at or to smell.
Founder Olivia Jezler said: “We believe that scents, and the act of consciously smelling, are impactful tools for wellbeing in our sensorially muted worlds. We work with world-leading fragrance companies to design custom scents for products and experiences, scent branding, and advise on the development of digital scent technologies that support and enhance lives. Our clients have included Fortune 500 companies, startups and trend forecasting agencies.”

be tricky. There is an opportunity for materials that absorb scents to be used as home fragrance. These should ideally come with a way of covering them. Also, there is a move from glossy vessels and objects (as we have technology being this way) to objects that are matte or have a texture, which give them a more multisensory feeling. Gifts Today 0

We stock Ethel & Co candles, wax melts and room sprays, and aroma tablets by Coinneal Candles. We are also currently working with another small business to develop our own branded reed diffusers. Wax melts are one of our best sellers at the moment. I notice that customers tend to shift to buying wax melts over candles during the spring and summer months. I think this is because they still want the scent in their home but not necessarily the cosiness of a candle flame.
At the home of Denby Pottery in Derbyshire, there is Denby Pottery Village, which welcomes around a quarter of a million visitors annually. At this popular Visitor Centre, Denby’s Fragrance Collection can be found with Denby’s Home Decor Selection at the entrance as a welcome to the store. There are five lovely fragrances available as candles presented in Denby handcrafted ceramic pots, and also Denby ceramic reed diffusers, available in Denby’s iconic patterns. Once the contents are used, the ceramic pots are designed to be repurposed. There are also candle tins available in the same fragrances. Along with Denby’s ceramic pots, the candles and fragrance oils are produced in England. Selling well for us is the Halo reed diffuser and Blue Haze ceramic candle holder.

I have struggled with candles, just because there is such choice out there - and, also, around the other shops in town. We recently started stocking candles from Cinnamon Aitch, though. These candles are lovely. I also stock Scentimental Gifts and Lollyrocket Candles. I’m still finding my feet with home fragrance!

outside, in Wax Lyrical
Home fragrance is so much more than a nice scented candle. It’s the emotions that the right fragrance can evoke, the memories and nostalgia it conjures up - and it’s as personal as choosing a perfume
Sitting on the southern edge of the Lake District, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, Wax Lyrical draws inspiration from over 2,000sq kilometres of mountains, forests, glacier valleys, streams, lakes, peat bogs and quintessentially English meadows and gardens. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Portmeirion Botanic Garden tableware collection, Wax Lyrical has created what it describes as the epitome of home fragrance. The UK manufacturer has been creating desirable, giftable, environmentally conscious and expertly crafted home fragrance for more than 40 years and knows fragrance. Botanic Garden has been a serene and comforting presence amid the increasing busyness of everyday lives. As the world races around us, the most recognised collection in British ceramics is still holding the fort at the centre of home and family life - a secret garden in which to enjoy the good times. Bringing the joy and fragrance of that garden into homes, is a range of beautiful escapism, featuring lovingly crafted candles, reed diffusers and hand care. There are four soul-enriching fragrances:

Poppy: a beautiful blend of sweet, cherry notes blended with a heart of violet and soft poppy, all resting on a sweet vanilla base.

Based on the Portmeirion Botanic Garden sugar pots, both the candle and reed diffuser use the same base with engraved wooden lids. The lid for the candle can be used as a coaster during use, and afterwards the container can be washed and used as a storage pot. Blends, fragrances, and vessels are all British made, and the use of sustainable coconut wax further promotes the environmentally conscious commitment. The recyclable vessels, in beautiful display box packaging, look equally fabulous on shelves. The same elegant and desirable fragrances are also available in Wax Lyrical’s hydrating hand wash and moisturising hand lotion, sold individually and as a gift box duo. Hand care products are in a 100% recyclable future pump and contain fragrance-specific essential oils and Jojoba seed oil. The dye-free wash gives a rich foaming action and a deeply nourished and luxurious skin feel. As with all Wax Lyrical products, which are cruelty-free and vegan-friendly, the luxurious wash and lotion has hands feeling clean and protected but also smooth and smelling amazing. Talking
scents
Former John Lewis home fragrance buyer Sara Allbright - now founder and director of Retail100 Consulting - shares her views on how retailers can maximise their customers’ home fragrance experience in-store What’s your background? I was a John Lewis buyer for 18 years, culminating in the best part of a decade buying Gifts and Candleshop.
What trends have you seen develop over the years? Home fragrance products have developed from just being about a scent you like, to products that can enhance your mood and support wellbeing, to brands that are seen as key interior trend pieces and have huge levels of demand and cult followings. The use of ultrasonic diffusers and fragrance oils has really taken off over the past two to three years, with people finding them a practical and reliable way of getting fragrance into their homes.
What do you think are key criteria when sourcing items? It’s key in the first instance to understand different types of fragrance carriers such as wax in all its variety, and how various oils perform. All have pros and cons around subjects such as product performance, sustainability, and price. Packaging is becoming a more relevant consideration, with

a conflict between the item needing to be well presented and look desirable on shelf versus the need to reduce waste. More and more, brands are looking to make their vessels reusable, so that they can play a key role in a circular economy.
Why should a gift retailer consider stocking home fragrance products? A home fragrance product always makes a useful gift; the recipient can find a purpose for the item unlike some other gift products that end up put away in a drawer or taken to a charity shop.
For a gift retailer taking their first steps into home fragrance, what would you recommend as a good starting point? Definitely consider brands and ranges that carry sentiments on their candles, as these make great add-on items to other presents.
Any tips on the best ways to display items? Testers are key. If consumers can’t easily smell the products, they will open stock items to do this. Testers
Sara Allbright
need updating too, to ensure they still give off a scent when unlit, as this will wane over time. Using something like bell jars over your testers looks smart and also helps retain the scent. If people lift the jars, they should be able to smell the scent in the jar rather than needing to lift up the candle itself.
people buying home fragrance as self-treat products. During a time of financial pressures and negative news, people will look for lower priced purchases that can add something different to their homes and allow them to enjoy a scent while they relax and unwind.
“The future is strong for this category as it drives repeat purchases once consumers have found a fragrance, brand, and format they love” Should gift stores consider using their own ‘signature scent’? If a shop can scent itself with a fragrance, it’s a good selling tool, as people will immediately smell it when entering the premises and ask about it if the aroma appeals to them. However, it’s something to be careful of, especially ensuring you don’t make it overpowering as many people are allergic and can’t be in confined scented spaces.
What trends will be big this year? I think the biggest trend will be
What does the future hold for this category? The future is strong for this category as it drives repeat purchases once consumers have found a fragrance, brand, and format they love. Home fragrance makes for the perfect gift, especially when a product is designed to uplift and support wellbeing.

Why should a gift retailer consider stocking home fragrance products? The beauty of Paddywax is the diversity of our collections. Our customers can curate an assortment of candles and diffusers that’s really interesting and exciting, which looks like it’s from multiple suppliers, when actually it’s all just one supplier, one invoice, and one low minimum order value. Beyond this, Paddywax offers a real point of difference in design for gift retailers to bring to their customers. There is nothing formulaic about our design and we bring a compelling story for consumers about repurposing and sustainability. What support do you offer retailers in displaying and selling your products? We offer our customers free point-ofsale display cards that highlight the features and benefits of the collection and how to repurpose the candle in your home. We are also working to develop full standalone display furniture as well, and we’re looking forward to launching this in the second half. The past year has seen a boom in demand for many home fragrance items. How has trading been for you? We’re into the third year of hyper growth for our category globally, and this

doesn’t show any sign of levelling off just yet. In the UK & Ireland our business is just really starting - we’re a challenger brand here and the uptake so far has been phenomenal! How will you continue to ensure demand for your products? Innovation is the absolute key to the continued success of our brand. We challenge convention and approach candle-making in a completely different way to the rest of the market, and our brand-loyal fans love us for it. As long as we’re pushing ourselves in this way and listening to the needs of our customers, we think this is the right formula to sustain demand. Our collections at Paddywax are highly inspired, on trend, and designed to be a part of your home decor. Paddywax is unique in our use of mixed materials, custom vessel shapes, and complex, sophisticated fragrances. We want Paddywax to become a part of your living spaces and have a life after use. Consumers are reimagining fragrance and inviting it into their homes in different formats. Incense, different types of diffusers, and interesting taper formats will continue to be popular.

Wax Lyrical Why should a gift retailer consider stocking home fragrance products? Candles and diffusers are the ultimate feel-good accessory and the perfect gift. The simple act of lighting a candle creates instant relaxation. Fragrance is the most sensitive of senses; it impacts our mood and taps immediately into our nostalgia and memories. Not only does a room look beautiful and smell fabulous, a fragranced candle, diffuser or room spray helps our whole sense of wellbeing. That makes for a thoughtful gift and the choice of designs, colours and styles makes for a wide range of consumer choice. Home fragrance products can be luxurious intentional gifts but are also perfect for ‘I saw this and thought of you’ customers. Even if you are unsure what a person’s favourite fragrance is, there are many fragrances such as linen or cotton which can appeal to everyone for refreshing their room and just feeling uplifted. What support do you offer retailers in displaying and selling your products? Every store is slightly different and each of our collections can suit a freestanding unit or a display area or even the window. We offer a range of options and welcome retailers to suggest what works best for them. We are very supportive of our retailers who utilise social media channels. Photography and point-of-sale assets are hugely important and above all else, the knowledge and professionalism of our dedicated customer services team is crucial, along with listening to the feedback of retailers. We’re delighted to have had a great response to our new 2022 collections, as well as continued demand for our best-selling favourites.
The past year has seen a surge in demand for many home fragrance items. How has trading been for you? The market for home fragrance will continue to grow, both as an affordable purchase for oneself or a thoughtful gift. We are a British company and that makes our products desirable in the UK and around the world. Economic pressures and costs will also continue to grow but we draw on our 42 years of experience and quality to remain agile, current and responsive.
“Candles and diffusers are the ultimate feel-good accessory and the perfect gift” How will you continue to ensure demand for your products? Consumers know the importance of long-lasting fragrance and quality, British-made products. That is Wax Lyrical. We draw inspiration from our home in the Lake District and continually strive to find sustainable solutions for all of our vessels, ingredients and packaging, such as the 100% recyclable bottles for hand care products and the use of coconut wax in our new Botanic Garden collection. We nurture our customer favourites such as Gold, Frankincense & Myrrh (now a best seller for over 20 years) as much as we celebrate contemporary designs such as Fired Earth and - new for this year JustBe Botanicals. The natural fragrances that Wax Lyrical blends through all of the wax, means you can replicate that time and again. Our state-of-the-art laboratory also ensures we maximise the throw in our reed diffusers. Wax Lyrical has taken that same commitment to science, quality and fragrance to produce luxurious hand wash and hand lotion, and also norinse cleansers for frequent and easy sanitising.

There is an instant and long-lasting feel good impact to having clean, protected and beautifully fragranced hands. What scents and trends do you predict will be big this year? Consumers are looking for products that look beautiful and smell amazing but also reflect their lifestyle choices. They want added value: products to help them feel emotionally better, secure, cosy, healthy, and environmentally conscious. There are so many components that go into lifestyle fragrance. We continually create and test new combinations and deliver on added benefits. An example is our HomeScenter range, which uses Odoraze to eliminate less pleasant smells such as cooking, and replaces the air with beautiful fresh fragrances. What next for this category? Science. In every aspect of home fragrance, science helps continuous improvement. Wax Lyrical is fortunate to have our laboratory led by Dr Will Locke. His team ensures safe and desirable products with the best combination of vessel and contents, which are beautiful, expertly performing, quality products. In other parts of our range, such as hand care bottles, we have made significant changes to sourcing bottles made from recycled plastic and reducing packaging. We all need to keep finding new environmentally-friendly solutions while enjoying the benefits of home fragrance.

Andrew Nettleton Managing Director
Ashleigh & Burwood Why should a gift retailer consider stocking home fragrance products? Home fragrance as a category is enjoying an upward curve. As with so much else, our experiences of recent times (lockdowns and changing work patterns) have altered consumers’ priorities and preferences. Our relationship with our homes has altered: our desire to make our home a sanctuary and accent our space with things that make us feel good has never been stronger. Many people recognise too the power that our sense of smell can play in altering our mood - so what better way to lift our spirits than with a beautiful fragrance that will enhance our home ambience and aesthetic?
What support do you offer retailers in displaying and selling your products? We place a lot of value in the way products are displayed. We are lucky enough to have our very own visual merchandiser at Ashleigh & Burwood and it’s our aim to offer retailers as much support in this area as possible. Initiatives that help us to achieve this include our in-store guide, our trade website that enables retailers to download printed point-of-sale material and digital assets for online promotion and, of course, our extensive range of display materials. From large display furniture through to printed point-of-sale material, we have everything needed to create strong displays that highlight key information. Finally (and very importantly), we offer fragrance testers for every one of our fragrances, including full size product testers for many of our key lines.
How will you continue to ensure demand for your products? As well as innovation, product integrity is a value we hold in very high regard. Next year we will be celebrating 30 years of Ashleigh & Burwood, and we believe our longevity as a business is testament to our unwavering approach to quality. Shoppers won’t come back to repeatedly buy products that look good on the shelf, but let them down with fragrance experience, longevity, or overall value for money.
“This category is enjoying an upward curve”
The past year has seen a surge in demand for many home fragrance items. How has trading been for you? Against a backdrop of many additional challenges to the business, trading for us has been strong and we’ve been delighted to welcome a lot of new customers. In particular, our Life In Bloom collection that launched at the start of 2021 has been a great success, with buyers drawn to its bright uplifting colours and fragrances and its original product designs.

What scents and trends do you predict will be big this year? Trends include fragrances that promote dreamy escapism. Our new Tropical Escape (starfruit, coconut flower and tonka) and Every Cloud (fresh breeze, peach blossom and amber) fragrances tap into this perfectly, and provide an olfactive antidote to the stresses of the everyday. Bright, uplifting florals full of promise are also set to hit the right mark with consumers as they seek out scents that add a positive vibe to their surroundings. We have introduced three such fragrances to our Life In Bloom collection: Lotus Flower & Watermelon, Wisteria & White Woods, and Orange Blossom & Mandarin. What’s next for this category? Home fragrance has come a long way since it first began to establish itself as a category back in the late 1980s. It’s strange to think of a time when we didn’t know of reed diffusers, but before the millennium most of us didn’t - and nowthey are one of the cornerstones of home fragrance! Undoubtedly, home fragrance as a category will continue to evolve and grow with innovations showing us new and inventive ways to enjoy fragrance in the home.
Rebecca Daniel Creative Director
The Eclectic Lifestyle Company Why should a gift retailer consider stocking home fragrance products? The huge range of available styles and types of home fragrance means there is something that will work well for most retailers, whatever your individual aesthetic and price range. Fragrance is a fabulous way to enhance the experience of customers: products that smell great will create a subtle backdrop to everything that you sell, and set the mood of your shop. Candles and diffusers make a very easy gifting idea, so it’s a great way to help customers who are purchasing for ‘the person who has everything’ and, as a self-purchase, home fragrance is a special treat. What support do you offer retailers in displaying and selling your products? We have two home fragrance brands: WXY and Maegen. Even though we make and pour in the UK, using 100% soy wax and high-quality fragrance oils, we work really hard to keep prices affordable and margins attractive for retailers. We are a family business and work together in a close-knit team, so we are able to provide a high level of service. We are always at the end of the phone for anyone who wants advice. We sell testers at reduced prices, which is a good way for retailers to display our products,
and we drop point-of-sale cards into orders so that customers can find out about our brands and our values. The past year has seen a surge in demand for many home fragrance items. How has trading been for you? We have definitely seen an increased demand for home fragrance, and we have had a very successful year. We are a growing business and fragrance products have underpinned much of that growth. I think consumers find home fragrance an effective and experiential wellness product, from creating that
“Fragrance is a fabulous way to enhance the experience of customers: products that smell great will create a subtle backdrop to everything that you sell and set the mood of your shop” spa environment at home to enhancing their indoor spaces with beautiful scents. There is also something ritualistic about lighting a candle; the glow that a flickering flame gives is a visual cue for relaxation.
How will you continue to ensure demand for your products? Plenty of newness, along with gorgeous smells of course! We are constantly working on development. Whether that’s innovation with fragrance, the method of fragrance delivery, or the type of wax we use, we are always looking to enhance performance and create new ranges that our customers love. Extra things that we will continue to do, such as the charity donation we make with every WYZ product, is also something that our customers appreciate - along with our commitment to pour and make as much as possible in the UK. What scents and trends do you predict will be big this year? There has been a lot of minimalism and a lean towards simple materials and natural textures: the ‘Japandi’ look. I think this will continue in various ways, but I’m going to welcome the return of colour and fun and bold statements. Maximalism is definitely a growing trend, and it offers scope for people to express their individualism and to be brave with décor. I think fragrances that offer a sense of escapism and joy will be big. What’s next for this category? The possibilities are endless, but I look forward to lots of technical innovation in methods of fragrance delivery and ways that consumers can personalise and tailor scents to their own requirements.

Lesser & Pavey
Why should a gift retailer consider stocking home fragrance products? Much is written about wellbeing and state of mind. An essence of wellbeing can be a view on what makes someone happy. The influences on what makes us happy are many, but one of them must be fragrance and joy in a gift. What better way of bringing joy to a friend or relative or yourself, than a present that reflects the natural fragrances of herbs known to bring changes in mood (calming, uplifting, restful, and joy) - and nature is known to bring joy in its natural beauty.
“With our fastmoving lifestyles and everchanging world, little pleasures in the home can make a real difference - and home fragrances seem to be everpopular for this very reason”
What support do you offer retailers in displaying and selling your products? Lesser & Pavey’s new range of Pampas grass diffusers are available in sizes of 100ml, 200ml, 500ml and a set of 3 x 50ml. The crafted glass containers that house the fragranced oils are formed from recycled glass, with sustainably sourced packaging and reeds. How will you continue to ensure demand for your products? By meeting the ever-changing moods of consumers with items that reflect home décor, and fragrances that capture moments and desires. What next for this category? To ensure quality in our product and fragrances, complemented by fragranced candles, we see this range continuing for Lesser & Pavey.

D & J Glassware Why should a gift retailer consider stocking home fragrance products? The market is huge: a home fragrance product is both a gift for someone else and a gift to buy for oneself. Everyone wants their home to smell lovely and, with many of us spending more time at home, this has become even more important. What support do you offer retailers in displaying and selling your products? We offer our stockists display samples and provide useful and attractive pointof-sale leaflets that customers can take away with them. We also offer low minimum pack sizes, so that our stockists can stock a wide range of products for their customers.
The past year has seen a surge in demand for many home fragrance items. How has trading been for you? Although the past two years have been challenging generally, our home fragrance products have been selling consistently well. The fact that our beautiful glass globes can be used time and time again has meant strong demand for our refill oils. Our fabulous oils are British-made, which is very important to us - and our customers.

We are seeing an increased popularity of scents that bring the outside world into the home, such as our Wild Orchard, Wild Berries and Rose Garden. We predict that this will continue throughout 2022 as folk are keen to reconnect with nature.

Why should a gift retailer consider stocking home fragrance products? Once a consumer has found a retailer that offers a product or selection of products that offers something new and different they are more likely to return to refill or refresh.
“Our desire to travel again will inspire and evoke our senses to discover new sights and fragrances”
What support do you offer retailers in displaying and selling your products? Free testers, point-of-sale material to communicate features and benefits, and display stands or countertop units.
The past year has seen a surge in demand for many home fragrance items. How has trading been for you? We are relatively new to the market. However, we’ve had such a good reaction to our products that we had to revise and increase our sales plan three times - which is a good sign!
How will you continue to ensure demand for your products? Sharing our rate of sale with other retailers, and our ongoing development of new and exciting products, that bring newness and disruption to the category.
What scents and trends do you predict will be big this year? Our desire to travel again will inspire and evoke our senses to discover new sights and fragrances. Premiumisation within the category will continue as consumers are connected to more complex and layered fragrances. What’s next for this category? It’s certainly an exciting time. You can heat your eye pillow and use it as a compress to relieve dry eyes, or chill it in the freezer to help relieve migraines and headaches. The regular application of lavender oil on wrists or bedclothes may improve the quality of your sleep. A study using brain scans to monitor sleep cycles suggested men and women who exposed themselves to lavender oil before sleeping slept better. Manor House continues to grow… Manor House
The 2022 collection is the largest fragrance offering to date
Manor House told us: “After a superb return to Spring Fair we have welcomed many new stockists on board to start the new year on a high. Numerous new gift shops and garden centres visited us at the show wanting to stock us, and all the comments were so positive. “They said our fragrance collection changes every couple of years and that helps so much in keeping ranges current and on trend. The newly-launched packaging and rebranding also drew many positive responses. We will also be launching with a major charity fundraiser later in the year, which will show our product to many more end-users - which will be great! “Our new 2022 collection encompasses 28 gorgeous fragrances to choose from, which is our largest offering to date. The fact that our products are handmade in England is what so many stockists want. “Our pot pourris are all designed inhouse using the finest botanicals available, fragranced using high-end oils, and then finished with individual flowers, petals, and seed pods. Every box and bag is then hand tied ready to display. Our fragrance oils are great for refreshing pot pourri or for traditional and even electric oil burners, and these remain one of our top-selling products. “All our Botanical Candles are produced using the highest-quality waxes and fragrances to match with the pot pourris having hand-placed flowers and seed pods added before hand-wrapping and tying. Our glass candles are simple and stylish and offered in matching gift boxes - again ready to display.
“Our reed diffusers, diffuser refills and room sprays are hand-poured with a high percentage of fragrance, before being boxed and again tied by hand to complete the collection. Many also include our newly-relaunched luxury hand wash and moisturisers, which offer a practical and useful addition. All the lotions are created bespoke for us and are not tested on animals. Home of the Natural Candle Heaven Scent
Heaven Scent boasts not only a private label service, but a long heritage in producing sustainable candles Home of the Natural Candle, Heaven Scent created an alternative to the paraffin candle nearly 30 years ago in an attempt to sell a more sustainable product, using vegan ingredients and keeping packaging to a minimum. The company is proud to still be offering a product that stands up in today’s environment. All the ingredients that Heaven Scent sources for its candles, reed diffusers, incense and body products are wholly transparent, and the firm updates its ingredients regularly in line with legal requirements. Heaven Scent said: “We work hard to remove certain allergens or ingredients that are deemed to be no longer fit to be burning in a candle or using in our body products. Our labelling system is robust, making sure that our customers know exactly what is in their candle.” The firm offers this service free when working with its private label clients. Purposeful design Every product Paddywax makes is designed and sourced with intentionality. It is passionate about the juxtaposition of mixed materials. From the textures and shapes of vessels, to pairing unique fragrances together, there is something beautifully compelling in each of its creations. With every design, the company ensures that each vessel can be repurposed when the wax runs out. In its Nashville manufacturing facility, Paddywax has more than 150 chandlers (candle makers) mixing, pouring, testing, and packaging candles every day.
Market-leading collections Paddywax prides itself on being one of the most versatile and functional candle brands in the global market. The UK collection has over 300 products and the company continues to invest and innovate in new products at an incredible rate each season. The new Dune range has been a huge success for independent retailers already this season, and your senses will be whisked away to the French Riviera by its new Al Fresco collection which includes stackable coloured glass candles that can be repurposed as table water glasses. The Santorini range of candles and diffusers are inspired by the textures, fragrances, and colours of the famous Greek island.
Premium quality Paddywax’s clean-burning soy wax blend has no phthalates or formaldehydes and, as you might expect, every product is vegan-friendly; free of animal-sourced ingredients.
“We start with a story and build around it to create collections that add warmth and nostalgia to your home” Paddywax gives back Bath, England Paddywax is part of the DesignWorks Collective family of brands which chose Bath to be their UK home in 2021, opening their showroom and offices there at the start of this year on Milsom Street. Later this year they will open their first Candle Bar experiential retail store, where you can ‘pop-in and pour’ to create your very own custom candle!
Paddywax and DesignWorks Collective are as passionate about design as they are about investing in their people and their community, with a true belief that they can make a difference. In 2020, they added solar panels and a solar carport to their HQ which offsets 30% of their energy usage and they are planning for a 500KW solar array at their manufacturing facility in 2022. Last year they were also able to plant over 10,000 trees and, in partnership with the National Park’s Foundation, have donated almost $200,000 over the last five years to maintain these amazing natural spaces.
Become a stockist With more than 7,000 independent retail customers and friends of the brand in the US, Paddywax is looking to build upon its base of independent partners in the UK & Ireland. Delighting the senses D & J Glassware
D & J Glassware’s popular home fragrance collections combine unique mouthblown glass and high-quality British-made fragrances
38 Gifts Today
Celebrating 20 years in the trade, D & J Glassware is well known for quality and style. In 2014, the company launched its first reed diffuser to offer an alternative to machine-made clear glass bottles. Since then, its home fragrance collections have grown and grown. The firm’s mouthblown glass reed diffusers are made by artisan glassblowers, using skills passed down through generations. Each glass piece is an attractive work of art and no two are identical. Refill oils mean that these fabulous glass items can be enjoyed for many years. The gift sets contain everything globe, reeds, and oil - and there are now 17 different sets to choose from, all with high-quality fragrance oils made in Britain. Ever popular is Citrus & Passion Fruit, which is a lovely, zingy and fruity scent. Then there are others such as Wild Orchard: a gorgeous combination of pear with freesia for a fresh fragrance, and Wild Berries, which is a delicious medley of redcurrant, blackberry, and white currant with a hint of gorse. Whichever you choose, your customers will come back for more.
In addition to the gift sets, the company launched a new collection of handmade reed diffusers at Spring Fair. These offer customers a stylish alternative and can be used with any fragrance oil. To complement the diffusers, wax melt burners combine handmade glass with D & J Glassware’s own design metal burner for wax melts. A select range of British-made soy wax melts is available. For a quirky alternative, the Arty Jars with Wax Melts are a fun way to use wax melts. The jars are decorated with motifs of D & J Glassware’s popular fused glass animals, which are echoed by the wax melts. Plus, the company offers pot pourri that is handmade in Britain, attractively packaged and tied with satin ribbon. Room sprays complete the offering, allowing for a quick spritz to freshen up the room. Each one is tied with a decorative ribbon for maximum shelf appeal.

New scents hit the spot Marmalade of London
New fragrances have proved a huge hit here and abroad for Marmalade of London
2022 has started well for Marmalade of London, with a highly successful Spring Fair. The company said: “What an amazing show for us! We launched our new fragrance Bay and Blackberry, with top notes of ripe blackberries, and middle notes of leafy bay and geranium, resting on a base of warm cedarwood and amber. “The fragrance was very well received, and the grey/blue packaging colour was a big hit. We also opened a record number of new accounts that will be joining our Marmalade family. As always, we loved seeing all our lovely customers - who are more like friends - making the Spring Fair a very enjoyable show for our team.” Marmalade of London’s Wellbeing range was a huge hit too, and exceeded all sales targets. The candle range comes in beautifully coloured glass with natural wax and essential oils. There are three fragrances to calm, balance and energise. The Calm fragrance has top notes of bergamot, mint, camphor, and chamomile; middle notes of lavender, rose, ylang ylang and clove; and base notes of musk, sandalwood, vanilla and amber.
The Balance fragrance has top notes of white flowers, rose and cassis; middle notes of violet, chamomile, lavender, and eucalyptus; and base notes of musk, sandalwood, and amber. The Energise fragrance has top notes of orange, grapefruit, and mandarin; middle notes of jasmine, cardamom, and geranium; and base notes of amber, cedar wood and patchouli. The range has been selected as a finalist in the Beauty, Bath & Spa category of the Giftware Association’s Gift of the Year 2022 Awards. The winning and highly commended products will be announced at The Gift Awards ceremony, which will be held at London’s Royal Lancaster Hotel on May 12. Marmalade of London said: “We are all very excited to find out at the award ceremony if we have won! All fingers are crossed at Marmalade HQ. Wellbeing continues to be a success on the other side of the pond, with a very successful launch of the range in US. It made its debut at the Las Vegas show, and we completely sold out of everything in the US warehouse! We have the Dallas, LA and Atlanta Shows to do next, and we’re sure it will be a massive hit at those events too.”

Top that! Broughton & Beech
A home fragrance range with a point of difference To support the growth of The Julie Dodsworth Home Fragrance range, Broughton & Beech - in conjunction with the British artisan designer - has introduced a Seed Topper that fits onto its gift-boxed reed diffusers.
