Joe Davies Celebrating 25 years at Harrogate STAND Q50
At this year’s Home & Gift Joe Davies is celebrating a quarter of a century with a newly located and expanded stand as well as the unveiling of more than 2,000 brand new products It’s been quite a year for Joe Davies so far. Not only has this family-owned giftware importers, which boasts brands such as Poo-Pourri, Snoozies and the Leonardo Collection, secured its thirteenth consecutive Greats award for customer service, but this summer they are celebrating their 25th anniversary of showcasing at Home & Gift. Home & Gift Harrogate was the first trade show the South Manchester-based company ever attended. “The success of that first humble stand in the Cairn Hotel was the catalyst for the strong growth that has made the company what it is today,” says chairman, Peter Davies. A quarter of a century later – and now offering more than 8,000 lines, delivering the UK’s largest selection of giftware for the independent retailer – and Home & Gift Harrogate is still the most important show in Joe Davies’ calendar. This year is especially exciting because after 25 years ‘up the hill’ at the Cairn Hotel, Joe Davies is moving to a fantastic new location (Hall Q) and to a bigger stand. “The large stand gives Joe Davies the opportunity to display even more products. Over 6,000 exciting gifts, fashion accessories and jewellery designs will be on show with more than 2,000 products brand new for the fair,” says Peter. “This gives the largest selection and variety in the whole show.” Among the many new launches will be Joe Davies’ new Sheaffer Pen Collection. Sheaffer has just appointed Joe Davies as its official distributor to the independent gift sector and three highly commercial

pen ranges will be available in Joe Davies’ modest quantitites. “This is a great opportunity for gift shops,” says Peter. They will also be presenting new Snoozies for A/W, with new fabrics, designs and construction. And due to some significant quantity discounts on fabrics, original Snoozies will now retail at a market-beating £6.99, down from last year’s £9.99. Jewellery has quickly become a staple product for gift shops and Joe Davies’ Equilibrium Collection is one of the most popular ranges in the country. Hundreds of new Equilibrium designs will be on show at Home & Gift Harrogate, including a great men’s collection and some brand new sparkly Christmas jewellery. Joe Davies’ huge selection at Home & Gift also includes a good proportion of gifts for the home. The range includes the largest collection of photo frames at the fair, on trend message signs, plaques and vases, lovely new glazed ceramic tealight holders, lanterns and Joe Davies’ bestselling shabby chic Provence Collection that is now available for the nursery too. In order to make it easy for customers to buy from them, everything across Joe Davies’ huge range is available in modest quantities, with minimum orders of just £100 and free delivery nationwide using the company’s Little & Often order system.

Looking for licences?
That’s
retailtainment! Kelvyn Gardner is MD of LIMA IMA UK. The Licensing Industryy Merchandisers Association n work tirelessly to promote the licensing industry globally.. Here he tells the Daily News ws of the importance of licensingg to the home and gift sector Yorkshire commerce is alive, well and thriving in July, it seems. At the start of the month Sheffield was home to the annual Children’s Media Conference and now here we are, less than three weeks later in Harrogate for Home & Gift 2015. Sixty miles separates these two events, though, until recently, the business opportunities that each offers would have been considered to be so different that the attendee lists would scarcely share any names at all. Not so any longer, I’m happy to say. As the UK arm of the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers Association (LIMA), it is our business sector that provides an ever-closer link between the films and TV shows that we and our children watch, and the consumer goods themed from those very entertainment platforms snapped up as gifts by an enthusiastic public. I’ve no doubt that this week in Harrogate you will see a large range of products created under license from some of the biggest media companies in the world, from American giants like Disney and Nickelodeon through to the UK’s own licensing brand leaders like the BBC, with Top Gear, Doctor Who and Sherlock, or Entertainment One, with their own mighty British brand, Peppa Pig. If your business has not yet opened up to the opportunities that licensing brings, then take a look around here this week and get clued in. How do you approach the subject? Well, nowadays we genuinely have an almost seamless virtuous circle of consumer, media creations, broadcast platforms, manufacturers/marketers, retailers, consumer products to consumers again. To the uninitiated, it may not seem that way, but there is a whole industry structure here that LIMA can help you identify and slot into. To take one example. Last week in San Diego, California, the BBC chose to unveil the trailer for this year’s Sherlock Christmas special. Not in London, not anywhere in the UK, but in San Diego. Why? Because Comic-Con, the world’s biggest fan event
“This week in Harrogate you will see a large range of products created under license” (rooted in comics and movies but spreading ever wider) takes place there. There is no better way to get the word out on new ‘fan content’ than at this event. Comic-Con, clearly, is steeped in licensing, and licensed merchandise, as fans of media franchises from TV like Sherlock to films like Star Wars vie to be the first to own hot new products created from this IP. Sherlock is a huge TV and merchandise hit in the USA, so Comic-Con delivers exactly the audience, both those actually at the event and from those around the world primed to receive the many media announcements made there, that the BBC wants to hook early for their show. At LIMA, we often say that licensed merchandise comes with built-in marketing, and this is just one example of how early that marketing begins. So whether you are a giftware manufacturer with your stall set out this week, or the retailer looking for that edge over your competitors, licensing can help your business.

Puckator DP1-23
Here at Home & Gift 2015, you can start to contribute to this content with your business. I’m confident that you’ll be glad you did.
Puckator will showcase its great selection of officially licensed products such as new collaborations with Mr Bean, The Beatles Yellow Submarine and Disney’s Frozen. New additions to its Yellow Submarine range - the iconic Yellow Submarine design n from the 1968 British animated film, which is based on the music of The Beatles, including the Yellow Submarine money box, vacuum flask and wall clock.
Contact Kelvyn on kgardner@licensing.org or via
www.puckator.co.uk
At a recent Disney showcase, executives of that corporation spoke of consumer goods being part of the ‘content’ that they produce. This is another link in this virtuous circle, embracing the impact of the retail experience, what some commentators call ‘retailtainment’, on the TV shows, films and other media that drive the creation of consumer goods.

Dobbies Garden Centres We talk sourcing and socialising at Home & Gift Harrogate with Judith Harris, the Buying and Merchandising Director for Dobbies Garden Centres Celebrating its 150th birthday this year, one of the UK’s largest garden centre retailers, Dobbies, has been in attendance at Home & Gift Harrogate from the start, sourcing product for its 35 garden centres situated throughout the UK. As the Buying and Merchandising Director for nonhorticultural categories covering Indoor Living, Leisure, Christmas, Food & Cookshop, Judith Harris has herself been attending Home & Gift for the past 15 years.
We will be looking for “unique products for the home with a traditional flavour that has broad appeal to customers
”
“We will be looking for products across the categories, but concentrating on Giftware, Home Décor, Jewellery & Spa,” says Judith, adding how unique men’s gifts are always on their search list. “We are always looking for men’s as they can be difficult to buy for and we are already thinking ahead for Father’s Day 2016,” says Judith.
The sourcing strategy for the buying team at Harrogate, Judith says, is “new, new, new and more new! New to market, new suppliers, new products. We want to offer new, exclusive and unique products to our customers,” says Judith. And while Christmas and A/W stock is pretty much sorted – Wendy MacKenzie, the Christmas Buyer and Suzanne Hoblyn, the Indoor Living Buyer visited the January show for this – the Dobbies buying team will be looking for any A/W product they find particularly exciting to top up what they
have, as well as looking ahead to stock for S/S 16. “We always try to think six to 12 months ahead,” says Judith. “We are very much trend-focused and use many channels to plan for the year ahead. We held a seasonal Trends Breakfast in London with the editors of magazines and newspapers in July to present our brands and themes for A/W 15 ,” says Judith, pointing out that Dobbies has completed its brief for S/S 16 and is already on A/W 16. With A/W 15 closer to home, however, and with the team looking for additional new product, Judith highlights some of the trends for A/W and what they will be looking for. “We will be looking for unique products for the home with a traditional flavour that has broad appeal to customers, as well as products under the theme of ‘Christmas at home’, with home entertaining taking centre stage. We toured the US and New York, in particular, last year and this theme arose, with a focus on throws, cushions and fabulous entertaining tableware,” says Judith. Further trends for A/W Dobbies has spotlighted and which will have inspired their Home & Gift buying include a Wildlife country living theme and an elegant and glamorous Frosted theme. “The Frosted trend has a Scandinavian feel about it, with natural woods and barks alongside hints of denimlike blue and sparkle,” says Judith. While seasonal consumer and interior decoration trends are key to Dobbies in spotting and sourcing on trend products, in-store themed displays are also key and Dobbies places great emphasis on visual merchandising. “We have a Head of Visual Design & Merchandising who sets the strategy for the season and then a trained Visual Merchandiser in every store, who will change table displays for every key event,
delivering lifestyle concepts that carry all product categories,” says Judith highlighting the current in-store theme of ‘Rose & Hydrangeas’, showcasing everything from rose-flavoured chocolates to rosepatterned cushions. When it comes to what sells well at Dobbies, Judith highlights two main categories – home fragrance and tabletop. “Home fragrance is key for us, especially scented candles and reed diffusers. In addition to our own range, which works for both indoor and outdoor, we find the home fragrance products from Wax Lyrical, Stone Glow, and Yankee Candles sell well,” says Judith. Dobbies is also finding the drinking jars and drink dispensers for outdoor entertaining are flying off the shelves, along with slate tableware for tapas, mezze and hors-d’oeuvres. So, with all this sourcing of fresh new product, will there be time for the Dobbies buying team to socialise or attend any seminars? “I’m really interested in attending the digital innovation panel talk, as digital is something particularly crucial to Dobbies right now,” says Judith. “On a less serious note, we will of course enjoy a glass of Pimm’s and the music on the lawn.”
Fast facts •
Dobbies has eight buying teams – four on the non-horticultural side, and between 4-6 colleagues per team.
•
The 35 Dobbies Garden Centres, which stretch from Inverness in Scotland down to Ashford in Kent operate with their own local identity, building links with communities.

Do use merchandising to actively drive sales. Identify what kind of product it is, and where to place it to ensure the most commercial benefit. Do use a seasonal calendar to plan your internal displays in order to push seasonal products. Do think creatively about how you can use visual merchandising (VM) to encourage customers to buy a particular product by demonstrating it. Do use see it, buy it displays to encourage customers to pick up and buy promotion products. Do encourage link purchases by putting complementary products together, for example, bulbs next to lamps or cutlery next to plates. Do cross merchandise products from different departments to create eye-catching internal windows and product promotions. Do use VM to tempt customers; encouraging them to buy products that they didn’t know they needed. Do look at how you can use VM principles (balance, emphasis, gradation, rhythm and pattern, and harmony and unity) to ensure your displays and shop floor create a strong visual impact. Do ensure that your fixtures are in sympathy with your brand.

Don’t be afraid to use graphic communication to sell your products; make sure it fits your brand. Don’t chop and change your VM strategy within a department, it will leave customers confused. Don’t stack things too high, must be easy to get to. Don’t be afraid to use themes within crossmerchandised internal windows; it can help to create an emotional connection between your customers and your products. Don’t forget to change your ‘internal windows’ and ‘promotional displays’ regularly. Don’t forget to look at the ‘best of the best’ for inspiration. Look at how other shops use VM principles to create visual impact. Don’t forget to use eye-line shelves to push the products you want to push. Eye-line is buy-line. Don’t forget to clean displays.

“
Harrogate is by far my favourite show; I wouldn’t have been coming back for nearly a decade otherwise! It’s just a really complete show for me: I can catch up with the suppliers I’ve been working with for years, but equally I always find plenty of new suppliers and products too. I’m on the hunt for some beautiful jewellery. It’s something we don’t do much of, but I’m keen to introduce it because of its relatively unobtrusive size and the impact it can have. I’ll also be placing plenty of orders generally for the A/W season. It’s here at Home & Gift Harrogate that I do the majority of my buying for the second half of the year. Gill Gray, Owner, Zig Zag Cards and Gifts
“
We’ve found everything we wanted to find, so it’s been a great day. We’re from completely different shops in different parts of the country, but we’re related and always come to Home & Gift together. It’s a bit of a family meet-up each year here in lovely Harrogate, and there’s everything we could all ever need for our stores here!

China, homewares, toiletries, bath and body, umbrellas, mugs, gift sets – we offer our customers a whole range of great gifts. We think of Home & Gift Harrogate as our Christmas show; it’s held at just the right time in the year and we always end up ordering almost all our entire Christmas collection while we’re here. We’ve already placed a couple of orders, and I’m sure that’s just the beginning.

It’s my fifth time at the show, and although we’ve usually done a big chunk of our ordering by this time in the year, we’ll always come to Home & Gift Harrogate to find something special and new. I am trying to seek out something quite specific: wooden watches. I’ll be really happy if I find some!

Ashleigh & Burwood “We offer quality, affordability and a broad product range”
The launch of Amora, a new method for fragrancing the home, has been a huge highlight this year. A multi-sensory experience, Amora Scent Hub is safe, stylish and flameless. It breaks down a combination of water and Amora aromatherapy oil into microfine particles and releases them into the atmosphere. It also delivers ambient mood lighting, both fixed and colour-changing. It acts as an ioniser and humidifier, removing airborne particles like dust and increasing moisture levels in the air, and the Apollo and Harmonia designs even boast integrated Bluetooth speakers controllable from a tablet or smartphone. There are six models to choose from.
Ashleigh & Burwood is quickly becoming renowned for providing a multi-sensory experience with its extensive home fragrance products. We talk to UK Sales and Marketing Manager Amanda Hiscock What’s been the main highlight for Ashleigh & Burwood this year? The first half of 2015 has been good for us and we’ve had great feedback from our retailers and opened a number of significant new accounts. This is not least because of our launch of Amora, which offers a completely new method of fragrancing the home. Safe, stylish and flameless, Amora makes use of advanced technologies to present a new home fragrance technique, with lots of extra benefits, from creating ambient mood lighting to removing some airborne particles like smoke or dust. And some models can be controlled via a tablet or smartphone. These kind of major developments don’t happen frequently and it has certainly provided a significant boost to sales.
Any other ranges or products selling well for retailers right now? The Scented Home Collection sells consistently across the board – diffusers, scented pomanders, room sprays. Each season, we add to the range with new seasonal scents and this season we present three new scents, Lily & Jasmine, White Cedar & Bergamot and Christmas Time, across a wide selection of formats.
came up in feedback from retailers, to help the sales of gift sets post-Christmas, too. Finally, we have added a festive collection to the Mini Diffuser Trio sets, which combine three festive scents in 50ml reed diffusers.
How do you stay on trend with your product? We always listen to retailer feedback – to find out what’s working well, what challenges they’re facing and what gaps they see in the market. We also keep up to speed on all trends, from consumer lifestyle to fragrance trends to interior styling trends.
What sets Ashleigh & Burwood apart from its competitors? Consumers and retailers alike buy into our brands for a number of reasons, but quality and affordability are vital attributes we believe. Furthermore, within the world of home fragrance, our product offering is so broad, with our portfolio catering to varied market segments in terms of age, style preference, price points. Packaging is also a real strength of ours – we add touches to our products and packaging that go beyond the recognised norm. And we are very strong on point of sale (POS).
What else will be new from you?
What POS materials do you offer retailers and buyers?
We have extended both the Simply Ceramic and Natural Elements Fragrance Lamp Collections this season with new designs and add three new fragrances, including Jasmine & Damson, Amber & Tonka and the festive Christmas Time scent. For both the mosaic Fragrance Lamps and Reed Diffusers we launch brand new gift sets for Christmas – these have been carefully curated, selecting bestselling non-festive scents to accompany festive ones so they maintain their appeal after the big day. This was something that
We offer a large range of complimentary POS materials, from fragrance testers through to large floor stands which can be supplied with orders over set thresholds. We are launching two display options for Amora at Home & Gift this year – a counter top display that houses the full range of essential oils and testers, plus a demo Amora Scent Hub and large double-sided floor display unit that houses the full range plus demo scent hubs. Both stands are free of charge with stock ordered to a certain value.
New sets for Christmas will be on show
Talking Home & Gift “It’s a great launch pad for Christmas product” Ashleigh & Burwood has been exhibiting at Home & Gift since 1998. The show is really important to the brand as it provides an early launch pad for A/W and Christmas product.
“We expect to secure orders for Valentine’s and Mother’s Day” As well as mid-season top-up orders across the product range, we expect to secure significant Christmas orders and some advance orders of key lines for Valentine’s and Mother’s Day 2016.
“The show is praised for its unique atmosphere” Having joined Ashleigh & Burwood late last year, this Home & Gift is my first experience of the show. I’m really looking forward to it as it is much talked about in the industry for its unique atmosphere and positive sales environment. I’ve heard about the social side of the show from retailers and I’m really looking forward to that side of it – I can’t wait to enjoy that famous Harrogate hospitality. www.ashleigh-burwood.co.uk

Meet the artist Jo Corner, Blue Eyed Sun STAND DP5-58 “We have always had a handmade focus to Blue Eyed Sun because I love crafting.”
“
The artist Jo Corner , who trained as a fine artist, designs greetings cards for her own company, Blue Eyed Sun. She loves making stuff with her hands and has a great eye for colour. She works primarily with craft-based materials and has always had a passion for working with fabrics, dating back to her first job at Liberty aged 15.
The art Blue Eyed Sun originally launched with glass enamel greetings cards featuring miniature enamels individually fired by hand. Jo moved on to other handmade and hand-finished products – translucent resin Suncatcher cards, hand-glittered Kaleidoscope range, and textile-based work. Many are now based on original hand and machine stitched embroideries and fabric appliqué.
and her textile cards are often cited by retailers as market leaders in this technique.
The cards Jo’s greetings cards are sold in 15 countries globally and most of the leading department stores, independents and gift shops across the UK. Her work has been licensed onto gift products with companies like Widdop Bingham
What’s new Jo’s latest designs include a knitted range for the spring season, Knit Wit; a handstitched embroidered range, Pincushion; and a new range of ceramic-style handmade cards, Impressed. www.blueeyedcards.co.uk
We have definitely seen an increase in demand for handmade – people like to know the story behind what they’re buying and also love to support British-made products. People like to treasure what they buy. We are all about handmade products that are high quaity, have a story to tell, are less disposable and support local industries and skills. Buying handmade means buying unique.
