Exhibitors and buyers enjoy Sunday Sundowners – more on p2
A bright and sunny start to Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival brought swift business to Harrogate yesterday. Exhibitors and buyers alike were buoyed by the glorious weather, which showcased the thousands of new products launched yesterday in their best light. “The weather has been fabulous,” says show director Cleere Scamell. “There is already that unique atmosphere that you will only ever find at this show.” After just one day, exhibitors are already thrilled with the outcome of this year’s event – and there are still three more busy days ahead. Ben Craddock, head of sales at Half Moon Bay tells the Daily News: “We always come here hoping to beat the previous year and we’ve done that already! Our expectations are high – and it has been better than we expected.” And it’s been a beauty of a show for Mad Beauty creative director Julia Cash: “It’s been a really positive show so far. We’ve had a great reaction to our licensed Beauty and the Beast range. It’s so nice to get a reaction and really see how our customers respond.” In Hall A, a change of scenery has been just the ticket for Aromatize, with director Paul Aspin saying: “We have a brilliant new location this year. The show kicked off really well for us, with all our customers coming to see our latest core and seasonal lines. An excellent show so far.”

Celebrations at Ashleigh & Burwood Ashleigh & Burwood revealed the “reimagining” of their look with a party on their stand B4 yesterday. In celebration of their upcoming 25th anniversary and 10 years since the launch of their famous fragrance lamps, guests were invited to see the new stand and the new look. Anna Borrett, product development manager, talked about the creative work behind the scenes that went into revitalising the brand, talking guests through the two new collections, Wild Things and Artistry. She tells Daily News: “We have such an abundance of in-house talent, and we’re really excited to introduce the new look to everyone. It’s so exciting to launch the new stand and the new look, and to invite all our fantastic customers to celebrate with a glass of champagne. There’s such a great buzz at the show, and I defy anyone not to love this place.”

Reasons to be cheerful
STONEGLOW CANDLES Perry Simmons, managing director A32
Independent retail consultant and Giftware Association chairman Henri Davies has many years’ experience of buying under her belt for organisations including the National Trust, WHSmith and Scribbler so has sound advice on why attending shows like the Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival is a good idea. Harrogate is lovely in July, especially if the weather’s good. The cheery thought of walking round in the sunshine, seeing people you know and maybe meeting up with friends, with a Pimm’s and listening to the band in the background – what’s not to like? Unfortunately, with today’s economic pressures there has to be more of a You only reason to take time out of your business with all the need to find one added costs, so why would or two great you attend Home & Gift? new products Whatever size of retail to make the outlet you have, there are many reasons to attend a difference summer show but no buyer should go to a fair at all unless they believe they’re going to find fresh new products for their store. While it’s always good to look at the ranges from your existing suppliers, hopefully you already know what their new products are because they should have been sending you updates. For me shows are for finding new suppliers with relevant products for my customers. Doing this online doesn’t work for me as I need to be able to touch, feel and maybe even smell the product to know that it’s of a good enough quality for my customers’ needs. Only after I’ve looked at potential new suppliers will I go to see my existing contacts as I know that, if I don’t manage to talk to see them at the show, I can get in touch afterwards as I already have an

understanding of the quality of products they offer. The things I consider when thinking about attending a show include: ● If there are a sufficient number of the type of exhibitor that will suit my outlet. ● Some of those should be new suppliers that I haven’t done business with before. ● There’s an area for exhibitors who are new to the industry or haven’t done a show before. ● I still need new products for any of my ranges between now and the end of the year. ● I can get the great new products I need to feature in my windows, to get my customers to come into the shop. ● Some of my current orders being delivered short, so I now have gaps to fill. Having looked at these criteria, if I can see there is a need to go to Harrogate then I will plan how and if the trip will be worth it – bearing in mind you only need to find one or two great new products to make all the difference to your sales. Given what I need to find, the exhibitors I want to see and where they are located around the show – it’s really helpful if there’s a floorplan available online beforehand – I can then decide how long I need to go for, have I got someone who can open and run the shop while I’m away, what it will cost me to be there, and how much money I have available to buy new stock. Now I’ve worked all that out, all I need to do is plan my day at the show.
Every year we have a meal at the Orchid restaurant with our team of sales agents.
What are your top products this year? Modern Classics, Luna, Geometrics, and Natures Gift.
Any big trends you’ve spotted? Hygge, which is geometrics, and Gift Of Giving for occasions.
How would you describe consumer confidence? A little nervous due to Brexit, but we are very keen to keep it homegrown by buying British. Sticking by our locally-sourced morals, we hope our client base will respect that.

ON TREND
Pink is definitely one of our most popular colours at the moment, paired with our brandnew old gold and aged copper hairpin legs… it definitely is a must-have! Our bright pink is called Cerise and light pink is called Baby Pink. Pink has proven to be so popular that we decided to launch a limited edition curly dusky pink sheepskin. Our Baa Stool covers are premium grade British sheepskin, while the legs are either turned to resemble sheep’s legs and hooves, or plain and tapered.
CAROLINE GARDNER DP1-113 The hot pink flamingo continues to feature on many a product, delivering a humorous taste of the tropics, and Caroline Gardner is no exception. Her Honeycomb paper decorations, each with a Honeycomb Pom-Pom integrated into the design, include bright pink flamingos. While her new Palm Springs range of cards draw inspiration from LA and Palm Springs with a palette of pastel blues and pinks finished with chunky glitter in pink, red and gold.
SASKIA & ROSE DPD-19
CREATED BY THE RIDLEYS G11 Designed and handmade in a workshop in Darlington, this high-quality handmade tweed jacket for hip flasks – the Lady’s Hip Flask - is part of the offer at The Ridleys. The company will be showing its new tweedy candle range, as well as some old favourites.
With a love and passion for all things beautiful, founders Suzanne and Francesca launched Saskia & Rose London, a premium leather fashion bag and accessories company including unique emoji-embossed products. The debut AW18 collection is launching at Home & Gift and delivers rose pink pieces with gold embossing.

Inspired by Noir, one of Belly Button’s most successful collections of 2017, Blush Noir is a spin-off range inspired by the current trends in interiors and textures, including marbling and concrete, and pairing these with a blush palette to complement a lot of featured rose gold. ‘What’s new’ is the biggest question we hear you ask? At Lang’s, we have been very busy designing our latest collections for the autumn/winter season. You could say that we are brimming with excitement with all of the gift ideas we have lined up for you! We have given you a glimpse of some of our favourites and we have many more collections, including sweet teen, a fun vibrant collection of sparkles and sprinkles, the unicorn has been a great range, so we have added some more pieces to tempt you. Your only problem will be wanting to buy it all! THE EVERYDAY COLLECTION They say laughter is the best medicine and some of our new plaques will definitely make you do that! Soft neutral colours mixed with some quirky metal animal heads, lots of oneoff pieces make this collection a stand out from the crowd! HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR Lights, camera, action! Our inspiration for this dazzling collection comes from Hollywood, V.I.P and Art Deco. Black and gold metallic with a hint of gold sparkle give these pieces sophistication, with added tones of coral and mint to add that touch of femininity. A truly fabulous array of gifts for that very important person. LOVE YOUR HOME Think cosy, warm and snuggling on the sofa, a place to relax and enjoy the simple pleasures in your own sanctuary. This style of living has come from the Danish word Hygge (pronounced Hooga) which translates into English as cosiness. Soft colours of grey and pink complement this range of candle holders, lights and cushions all of which make ordinary everyday things more meaningful and special.

ROSY GLOW The latest hot décor trend, this is a very sophisticated colour that is stealing the spotlight. Its soft feminine hues of pink rose-gold glitter, mixed with champagne gold, bring a truly sumptuous feel to the pieces we have created. Many different items make this a stand-out collection. Our favourite is the gorgeous ‘follow your dreams’ cushion with sequins and pompoms which are another very popular accessory this year. It’s ‘all hands to the wheel’ to create our stand for the Harrogate Home & Gift Fair, lots of paint, glitter and teamwork from all at Lang’s. All we need is a visit from you! We are really excited to show you all of the new collections, along with some of our classics, and our festive Christmas collections will also be making an appearance …… see you there!! What do you love about Home & Gift?
What do you love about Home & Gift?
I will visit all my current suppliers to see what new designs and products are available and then I’ll have a look for any Christmas products which catch my eye.
Being new to this business, for me it will be identifying new products and suppliers.
What’s on your shopping list at the show?
Who are you looking to connect with this year?
It’s all about the Christmas gifts.
What’s your favourite social spot in Harrogate? I normally just get down to Harrogate for just one day, so I never really get to eat or socialise outside the show, but the food and drinks inside always go down a treat!
In the hope the weather will be glorious, what’s your favourite ice cream or lolly? Mint choc chip.
Anybody whose products fit with the type of business that I’m wanting to develop.
Any particular trends you’re seeing in gift right now? An unfortunate trend is a reduction in trade and visitors to the area.
What’s your favourite social spot in Harrogate? Not had the opportunity to try any yet as this will be my first visit.
In the hope the weather will be glorious, what’s your favourite ice cream or lolly? Got to be a Mr Whippy!
The Daily News caught up with some retailers to find out what makes Harrogate Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival such a key date in their diary Kevin Bellwood, Roobarb & LoveRoobarb.co.uk
Alison Allen, Conway Cards Conway Cards have been independent card, gift, balloon and wedding stationery retailers in Garstang, Lancashire, since 1982, and pride themselves on the quality of their products and service.

Roobarb is a lifestyle store in Bridgnorth, Shropshire with their online shop LoveRoobarb.co.uk selling the same bags, jewellery and home furnishings.

What do you love about Home & Gift?
Alex Clark, Berni Parker Designs, Wrendale Designs
Home & Gift has a relaxed feel about it, everything is fairly easy, parking, entry into the venue, etc. The product range is always great and it’s a joy to walk around seeing the products and meeting new and current suppliers as well as soaking up the enthusiasm and optimism for the coming months.
What’s on your shopping list at the show?
Who are you looking to connect with this year? Haven’t got anybody or anything specific in mind, but we know we’ll find something in Harrogate to add to our amazing range of products at Roobarb.
What’s your favourite social spot in Harrogate? Again nothing in particular, we’ll see what Harrogate has to offer.
In the hope the weather will be glorious, what’s your favourite ice cream or lolly? Mint choc chip – I look forward to a tub arriving in the post soon!

What’s your favourite social spot in Harrogate? Lucia’s opposite the Majestic Hotel, that’s where we always go for lunch. We have different things each time because it’s changed hands recently. It used to be called Joe Riggatoni’s and they had the best-looking waiters! They’ve altered it quite a bit over the past few years, there’s a nice deck outside where you can sit and it’s the favourite lunch spot for me and mum Angela.
In the hope the weather will be glorious, what’s your favourite ice cream or lolly? Has to be chocolate chip or honeycomb toffee!

Hamish the Golden Eagle Doorstop adds to the award-winning Country Folk Collection and the Patchwork Collection is expanded by a pink Patchwork Pig doorstop. The Pedigree and County ranges are a must – introducing Solo the Alsatian and Chico the Chihuahua doorstops, finished in beige herringbone fabrics. Inspired by existing doorstop designs, three new draught excluders join this collection, Thurston Senior, Jackson Senior and Egbert Senior.
Baking is so popular now with people of all ages and abilities giving it a go at home. I’ve designed a range of equipment, using my wealth of professional experience, to give bakers the best bake possible. My bakeware is robust, it won’t warp and it lasts – and I love the champagne colour! I think it’s perfect because the non-stick quality is still there but it looks softer than traditional bakeware.

Wild at heart
Animal antics are always popular with designers and retailers – and loved by customers too.
My love of animals is apparent in my artwork, where I catch the personality of my models with a particular emphasis on the eyes! The Pig is called Dennis, while the Giraffe is called Giles. In 2010 together with my husband Nick, I launched a range of fabulous giftware, prints and table top items, from oven gloves to placemats to aprons, based on my unique artworks. Caroline Walker, owner of Caroline Walker DPD-69
CREATIVE TOPS M27 Creative Tops takes a breathtaking woodland walk with new additions to Into The Wild, a colourful collection of tableware, gift sets and textiles. You’ll find stylised sketches of woodland creatures and autumnal colours, with hand-drawn black and white illustrations of a majestic stag, eccentric pheasant, sprightly hare and crafty fox, set against block colours of merlot, sky blue, sage and burnt orange. A forest bear joins the lineup, and new products include tote bags, aprons, tea towels and new cosmetic bag.
REALLY WILD CARDS GS76c
CHURCHILL CHINA M26 Churchill China look to exotic shores for inspiration for their latest The Kingdom Collection, where tribal and jungle inspired prints make a strong statement. This is a nostalgic trend that draws inspiration from 50s and 60s with fun prints and whimsical charm. The most popular iconic jungle animals are introduced into the home with the selection of nine mugs.
They’re making sure customers can definitely get the bird in the nicest possible way at Really Wild Cards with the newly-released Stamp card collection. Featuring Royal Mail drawings of British birds, the latest audio designs are married with sounds from the Birdsong range to bring the cards to life. You can see – and hear – all the Really Wild ranges on their stand, and take advantage of the Summer Spectacular discount of up to 20 per cent.
What the retailers say...... We have lots of animal-themed gifts in the shop, from doorstops to cushions to photo frames and prints. Being in the Highlands, stags and Highland cows continually do well for us and we’re always looking out for new designs. The industry never fails us. Not only is it nice and compact in comparison Home & Gift is a great opportunity for a bit of with some of the other shows, but you get the networking as, wherever you go in the town, you chance to see daylight a bit more than other can reach out and there will most likely be someone venues we could mention. from the trade show within touching distance. Fingers crossed, the weather tends to be pretty I’m trying to remember a Harrogate show sunny most years, so it’s a great day out and the area where I haven’t come away with a new company has a great selection of bars – often you don’t get to meet the people Getting around and restaurants just across you’re working for when they first take the road from the show. you on as it’s usually an email or phone involves venturing As many of the halls are outside with a detour call, so it’s always good to put a face to actually in nice marquees, them before beginning your business via the Pimm’s stand getting around usually partnership. involves venturing outside, I’m particularly looking forward sometimes with a detour via the Pimm’s stand LOL! to this year’s Home & Gift Show as the candle With the show being in Harrogate it’s a really company I represent – Potters Crouch – will be important show for me as it’s the closest trade exhibiting here for the first time in their 31-year fair for our north-west customers to visit and history. I’m very choosy when it comes to candles definitely has a more social feel to it as often, after and room fragrances as I use a lot of them myself the show finishes each day, the crowds spill out so I’ve been very picky about who I’d like to have into the nearby bars and restaurants so you get in my bag, as we say in sales agent circles – I think the chance to mingle and chat in a more relaxed I’ve definitely stumbled on to a winner. atmosphere. Why are you exhibiting at Home & Gift? It takes place at a time when buyers are planning for the second half of the year. The show’s in a great location too, making it social and fun.
Describe your company in three words Traditional, quirky, fun.
Trends…? Gift books are making a massive comeback and are now a very important part of our range. We’re also expecting our Christmas range to be really popular again and are launching some new additions, including a festive selection of Jumping Jacks and a hilarious O-Deer party game.
How’s 2017 going? Retailers have been slightly more cautious with their buying after recent events – but we’ve had a really good year so far.
Tips for new exhibitors? Make your stand as attractive as possible and provide an excellent customer experience for buyers. We also have cakes and chocolates, which are always very popular!
Best thing about the industry? The people – full of creativity, energy and in general a thoroughly lovely bunch.

Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival Harrogate 2017
Hannah & Gail Fowler 8 Court Street, Newtownards, Northern Ireland
What are you looking for? Gifts, all household things, small bits of furniture, jugs, glassware, that type of thing
Have you been to H&G before & what do you like about it? We have been before but not for a couple of years so we thought we’d come again this year to look for something different – and we’ve been really lucky with the weather!
Have you found anything here? Yes, we’ve ordered from Lisa Angel, Talking Tables, Brakeburn, and Gisela Graham, and we’re just looking at Besp-Oak now too.
The Daily News caught up with some retailers to find out what makes Home & Gift Buyers’ Festival such a key date in their diary
Potters Crouch Caroline Harbinson, Caroline’s Watches & Clocks, Lincolnshire “It’s the first time I’ve ever been to the show, we’re having a look around in general, because you never know what we could stock. These candles would make the shop smell lovely – and it would be great to win the fragrance competition! I’m looking at all jewellery here as we’re thinking about bringing it in store.” Brigid & Martin Jervis, Gervaise Antiques, near Weatherby, North Yorkshire “We’re having a look at furniture really, but these scents are lovely.”
Amanda Taylor Desire Handbags, Longridge, Preston.
What are you looking for? Handbags and jewellery. We had a list and we’ve done everybody on the list, so that’s good.
Have you been to H&G before & what do you like about it? It’s a very good show, we’ve missed only one in the past 10 years and this year is a particularly good one.
Have you found anything here? Yes, some that I already deal with and some new ones too. I’ve ordered handbags from Red Cuckoo and David Jones for the first time.
Redback Cards Daylin Flavell, Ooma Interiors, Newmarket
“I’ve just ordered their cards for the first time – this one’s for me ‘to be old & wise you first must be young and stupid’! I’m having a jolly good look around to see what else I need.”

Xystos The home of flame and fragrance has been attending Home & Gift for a decade, offering a portfolio spanning well-known candle brands and bath and body products. The company will be unveiling new ranges and line extensions on its mammoth stand this week, and we caught up with director Tom Sykes to learn more.
WoodWick “Our big launch from Xystos is WoodWick’s Artisan Collection of candle products, which is developed with a unique blend of herbs, dashed with deep woody fragrances and citrus undertones,” says Tom. Designed to “bring out your inner artisan”, the range comprises a medium hourglass, HearthWick ellipse vessel, tin, mini wax melt and reed diffuser.
The show is well attended, has the right buyers and a good feel
There are four additions to the best-selling HearthWick Trilogy range – the new fragrance Calming Retreat, as well as Café Sweets, Warm Woods and Fresh Baked. Says Tom: “HearthWick continues to be our most popular shaped vessel, with sales growing at the same level as last year. It never fails to give us sell-through.”
Cello The success of the Cello melt burner range heralds the introduction of six further designs and major development within the Porcelain Collection, which has “placed very well”.
Wax Melts Summer brings a dip in candle sales universally, but not in the purchase of home fragrancing without a flame. Tom explains: “Unlike candles, you don’t have to be in a room to monitor a wax melt. We have seen exponential growth in the burners’ category.”
Bath and body will continue to feature strongly, with the new Gardeners Collection from Woods of Windsor. The unisex line comprises a hand wash, hand scrub, hand cream and hand balm/butter. As far as Home & Gift is concerned, Tom comments: “The show is well attended and has the right buyers and a good feel – people are prepared to invest their time and aren’t in a rush.”
Shoppers now have the opportunity to create their own personal blend of fragrances when melted in a burner. The Basic Collection from Xystos comprises 36 sumptuous scents – fruity, fresh or sweet – while the Extended Collection also has three dozen fragrances.
Village Candle The company’s 2016 partnership with America’s Village Candle is flourishing, as repeat sales testify. “It’s a brand we are looking to continue to invest in – which is what you will see in Harrogate in terms of the space this extensive range will occupy. We are delighted to have it in our portfolio.”
