aving been the Editor of the title for ten years, during which time as a magazine we have always tried to respond effectively to ever changing trends, cover industry related news, bring you solid features, interesting interviews and new contributors. Naturally, the next transition for Nursery Today was to look at the design. So ta da - welcome to our new look Nursery Today. As with anything, which the nursery trade is a superb example of with products continually being either newly launched or cleverly enhanced, the timing felt perfect to carefully reconstruct the title to bring you an up-to-date, modern, contemporary magazine which really enhances products available to you and one which reflects the very exhilarant and changing dynamic of the nursery sector. It’s been an exciting time here for the team, who have worked hard behind the scenes, and I think you’ll agree as you start to work your way through this issue - it’s been incredibly worthwhile. We have always looked to build and improve the magazine, continually enhancing our content to keep in touch with the ever changing dynamic of the trade. For example, we listened to retailers, buyers, suppliers and manufacturers last year which cemented our decision that the magazine should run n as a monthly title. However, it didn’t stop there, we also addressed our online news service. It became very evident that we, as an industry, are just as information hungry as all those new mums, so we altered our pattern and commenced with sending out industry related news daily - re-

Red tape rigour While everyone moans about red tape, Christian Jones, MD of leading safe sleep brand The Gro Company, explains how it can be a good thing as the current voluntary nature of product safety standards can lead to difficulties for both retailers and consumers. In the run-up to the June 23rd referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU, we will doubtless be hearing more on the subject of reducing red tape for businesses. Across the EU, measures that have been put in place with the intention of protecting workforces from exploitation or making trade conditions fairer, can easily end up being perceived as nothing more than costly and burdensome regulation – sufficient to strangle the fledgling businesses that the UK so badly needs. But regulations concerning product safety are not necessarily a bad thing. How else can consumers feel assured that the products they are buying have been tested rigorously enough to ensure they will not cause harm to themselves or their environment? Within the nursery industry, safety issues are quite rightly paramount. Brands that commit the considerable time and expense to ensure their products conform to the relevant national safety standards, such as the British Safety Standard (BSS), are acting in the best interests of their valued customers. Furthermore, in a marketing environment that demands increasing transparency to ensure ethical business practices, most people would assume that those companies that do make the effort to comply with safety standards would at least enjoy a competitive advantage over their less scrupulous rivals. In reality, this is not always the case.

Compliance is voluntary The use of standards in complying with European product safety directives is, with a few exceptions, not compulsory. This can result in two main problems – companies claim their products conform to the BSS but in reality they do not, and companies that make no attempt to follow the standards because of their voluntary nature so are manufacturing products which may actually be dangerous to consumers. In the nursery industry, we know that product safety is a major issue for parents. But these same parents can also suffer from information overload, which is where a trusted brand name can provide a welcome shortcut for time-poor purchasers. However, retailers also have a major role to play in reassuring their customers about the safety of the products they sell. In fact, retailers who do not take a keen interest in the proven safety of the nursery products they stock may be guilty of unwittingly adding a false layer of reassurance to unknowing parents. As with EU red tape, no one would want to advocate greater bureaucracy within the industry but, as nursery product manufacturers and nursery product retailers, we have to ensure the desire to provide something new to our customers does not outweigh our obligations and commitments to their safety. MOTHERCARE

Mother knows best Mothercare opened its first store in 1961 in Surrey and subsequently launched their mail order business in 1962. Initially they focused on pushchairs, nursery furniture and maternity clothing, but expanded its range to include clothing for children up to the age of five and later up to the age of eight. Penny Franks had the pleasure to chat with their Senior Nursery Buyer, Devlin Lindeque to find out a little e more o about the Mothercare proposition. Firstly, how long have you held your current position at Mothercare? e? I started with Early Learning Centre in January 2014, then moved to Home & Travel Nursery department in June of that year so it’s been just over 18 8 months in my current position.

What would you say is the best aspect in your role as a Senior Buyer? I really enjoy the creativity of pulling a range together that customers positively respond to. Product development is a passion for me and here at Mothercare we have ample opportunity for that.

this is?

Do you feel that parents are currently altering the way they purchase their nursery items?

I thin think parents are attracted to the ease aand benefits of co sleeping. Having the baby close by for night time feeding and without the risks associated of having the baby in your bed is attractive.

Yes. All parents want the best for their newborn and I think technology, online shopping, parenting forums, blogs and social media are all helping parents to research more for the best products at the best price.

What about the ‘gifting’ aspect of Mothercare, how important is this to the overall business proposition?

nursery today

Gifting is really important. Being the UK’s number one parenting retailer we have an extremely high percentage of first time parents, grandparents and other family and friends coming through our doors so it is important to offer a suitable range.

What about colourways - is Grey still a popular choice, or do you think we will see a shift toward a new colour this year perhaps in wheeled goods or car seats? Depending on the category, grey is a popular choice. It hasn’t worked as well on furniture and has been a bit slow on soft lines, but within Car and Travel grey is still a popular choice. There appears to be move towards “greige” i.e. a warmer grey.

How important are product demonstrations to you? Extremely important. Being a first time parent can be a bewildering time with so much to consider and you’re faced with a whole new set of products that you may have never come into contact with. To build confidence it really helps for a specialist demonstration. We are very fortunate to have passionate store colleagues who have been trained as specialists in all product areas.

Are there any specific trade shows, either here in the UK or abroad that the team visit each year? The teams visit NEC Spring & Autumn Fairs, Harrogate Nursery Fair, K&J Cologne, IMM Cologne, Maison Paris and Shanghai Fair.

Do you feel that your current suppliers offer you sufficient support, or could they be doing more? We have extremely close working relationships with all our suppliers who are experts in their field. Being the number one baby retailer it’s crucial to nurture these relationships and work hand-in-hand to get the best from them, which largely we do.

Do you feel that we have sufficient innovation within the nursery sector? There are some great elements coming through, particularly using technology. For example 4Moms Mamaroo Bouncer using motion sensors to simulate a parents rocking motion. Our customers are always attracted to new innovation so we are always looking for the next best thing.

How important is the website to the business? Extremely important. Generally retail has seen a huge shift to online shopping over the last few years so becoming a digitally-led business is one of the main pillars of our turnaround

strategy. Stores remain crucial to our business which is why we updated 50 stores in 2015, including five brand new stores and we will be updating a further 60 stores in 2016.

What about social media platforms, how do you manage this and what benefits does this type of consumer activity bring? We are most active on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter but are currently revisiting our Google+ and Pinterest strategy. These are managed by our Social Media Executive, who plans social campaigns and supports promotions that are relevant to our target customer. There benefits are: brand awareness, brand representation, as well as positioning ourselves as a brand that offers expert advice and is keen on building a community. Our social channels are a great way of driving conversations between the brand and the consumer, they also create a space where our customers can talk with each other.

We work in an incredibly emotive industry - how do you operate your customer service channels? We try to ensure our representatives are well equipped with the necessary product training to answer the varied questions that come through. Customer service in store is crucial but equally important are our dedicated aftersales team which we are very proud of.

Finally, are there any exciting plans on the horizon that you can talk about? We have just announced an exclusive design collaboration with internationally renowned British fashion designer, Julien Macdonald. Smile by Julien Macdonald, is a new born predominately clothing collection aimed at babies and very young children age 0 – 2 years, launching in 64 stores in the UK as well as Mothercare’s Middle Eastern stores.

What products do you look for?

How many days do you attend?

It changes every year. We always look for bedding and we’re always interested in new wooden furniture.

We’re going for two days, travelling back on the Tuesday.

What products do you look for? A mix really – we do prams, cots and all the essential stuff.

Is there enough innovation and newness at Harrogate?

What makes it a must-visit show?

I think there’s too much of it. Every year there is always something new – crash helmets mets for babies or something like that. I’m old school.

We don’t have so many reps now so it’s a good chance to catch up with everyone and see the new designs.

Do you attend the social events? Do you attend the seminars or social events?

Oh yes, we go to the BANTAS which we really enjoy.

Yes – last year I visited especially to attend the marketing seminar, it was very good. I did the BANTAS once but I usually just go to the hotel after the awards and mingle.

How many days do you attend? We are going for two days.

Contact Penny Franks for a chat on 01442 289 947 penny@lemapublishing.co.uk if you would like to be included in our next issue. It’s good to talk!

What makes it a must-visit show? I think if you don’t go to trade fairs then you don’t know what’s up and coming, and happening.

What products do you look for? We’ll be looking at our current suppliers to see what they’ve got out that’s new and what deals they have. Then we’ll be looking at new suppliers to see if we can find new products.

Is there enough innovation and newness at Harrogate? There are new companies but I’m not sure about new products until we get there!

Do you attend the social events? I used to but now we prefer to go to the Majestic after the awards to socialise with everyone.

How many days in Harrogate? I left it to the last minute to get a hotel so we’re going up on the Sunday, returning home on Tuesday. It’s my first time, I don’t really know how many days I’ll need. How many days do you attend? Just the one. I’ll be going on the Sunday.

What products do you look for? Something new that’s not overpriced but that would be good for our market. I look for new prams, travel systems, cribs, moses baskets – everything that aligns with us as a nursery retailer.

Is there enough innovation and newness at Harrogate? There is but there could always be more.

Do you attend the social events? We used to go down for two days in the beginning and attend these, but now we just don’t have the time.

Shop matters with NSG

Yasmin Ali, Babyland

Yu m myi es mu m m i guys! It’s time, Harrogate will soon be opening their doors and might have some surprises! If you’re a supplier/ manufacturer still thinking ... stop thinking and start deciding. Book a small stand and let’s be seeing you! Retailers - come on! If ever you invest in your business surely it starts here. Many of our lovely suppliers new and old are putting on indie only offers—but the beauty of these offers is they are show only offers; make the effort, bite the bullet and do it. The fact is, if we don’t support our home show, the show will disappear—and who will we have to blame. For some suppliers it is a double-edged sword: we want

exclusives and we want packages, but what support are we giving them in return - and I’m not just talking about shop floor space. Some of the suppliers are offering year-long offers for show attendees and if you don’t need year-long extra margin then fine - it’s a wonder why we are fast becoming an endangered species. It’s called putting your money where your mouth is and I’m quite fed up of suppliers talking to us as all we do is moan. Offers are a huge draw to the

vely Many of our loand suppliers newing on old are putt ffers indie only o show, and hopefully will entice those still somewhat unsure. I want to quickly make a few points. Firstly Ian at Babylicious has asked “what company is ethical enough to give back?” We want companies who use animal prints or animal names to ‘give back’ so x amount of every item sold goes to x charity or animal awareness fund etc. The best example here is that Cosatto

have adopted Flamingos at Chester Zoo - THAT is love! Anyone else doing things we don’t know about? Second, big love to Bizzi Growin and Clair De Lune. I’ve picked up on some charity donations going on - big love and anything we can do please let us know, I want to meet Amir Khan, I’ll come and do some fundraising with you! And thirdly, companies allowing suppliers from outside the UK to flood the market with non FR products your retailers are FAST falling out of love with you and it’s a slippery slope so please sort it out! It’s a huge discussion point on the NSG with only one outcome looking likely in the long run. And so with Harrogate just weeks away, here’s just some of the things I am looking forward to: Pink Lining, Bébécar, BabyStyle Hybrid and DAVE, Clair De Lune, Shnuggle, Emmaljunga, BabyPrice, BeSafe and Richard Inglis - who is looking for lovely new indies - to name a few. I’m super excited about the show and can’t wait to see as many of you as possible there! So this is me signing out, come and say hi at Harrogate! See you all there! Facebook told me, and I believe this to be true: it doesn’t matter if the glass is half empty or half full, there is clearly room for more prosecco!

cover story JOIE

Simply brilliant growth! True to form, 2015 brought yet another exciting year of product innovation for fast-growing nursery brand Joie, 2016 is no exeption. n. nderpinned by a core portfolio of awardwinning home and travel products, last year saw even more hero items shine-through. In 2015 Joie customers welcomed a wealth of new products into the range, each with the unique features they have come to expect from Joie. They discovered the SecureClick travel cot range, which comes with different toppers so parents can choose the right one for their needs, and the i-Gemm, the first i-Size infant carrier from Joie and part of the award winning iSizeSafe System. Plus there was the new group 1, 2 & 3 car seat Transcend. Packed with features to adapt and protect baby up to 12 years, it replaced the five-point harness in group 1 with the 4-position SnugShield impact cushion that increases comfort and ease of use. The indoor range was no exception with Dreamer, a stylish new rocker and Serina

2in1 the wonderfully padded swing with a lift-off seat which becomes a stand-alone rocker. Both designed to support baby’s needs, offering a comfortable space to play and rest. All this innovation resulted in 12 months of consecutive sales growth exceeding all targets for 2015 with a more than 80% growth in turnover by year-end for this multimillion pound Company. Whilst i-Size remained a key element of Joie’s communications, the

Company cemented its strong car seat offering with an integrated ‘Look Back Longer’ campaign. Utilising national Road Safety Week in October, the campaign highlighted the benefits of rearward facing a child’s car seat through an educational campaign with leading parenting website MadeforMums. This platform provided the opportunity to advise parents whilst showcasing the length and breadth of Joie’s extended rearward facing range. Managing Director David Welsh says: “It was important to us that we built on all

ge a t S y r e Ev the successes of the year before with product innovation and strong consumer educational campaigns. I’m delighted that Look Back Longer performed so well and this pulled through to our sales. The strong integration of messages across many platforms, including in-store, point of sale, advertising, PR and social media, ensured it had maximum impact. Kind & Jugend was an opportunity to bring product development to the forefront with the arrival of several new innovations including: •

Every Stage - the ultimate transporter designed and engineered to make growing up easy from birth to 12 years. Evalite - This double pushchair is ultra-lightweight, one of the lightest you will find at just 9.2kg. Suitable from birth to 15kg, this tandem is a satisfying solution when pushing two. Spin 360 - suitable from birth to 18kg rearward, this car seat rotates 360 degrees and can be

used rear or forward facing. All of which will be showcased with other new arrivals at this years Harrogate International Nursery Fair. Joie continues to understand the importance of engaging with its audience and reaps the benefits of investment to ensure it remains a highly recognised name in the nursery arena. From big marketing campaigns, including an eye-catching fleet of branded London taxis, extensive use of Baby TV and the ‘Look Back Longer’ communications, to smaller targeted activities including product tests, award entries and a daily voice through active social media channels. This year will also see the launch of a new Joie website, not only with a great new look, but enhanced and user-friendly features. David Welsh comments on the year ahead; “Just three years in to our growth plan we are in a strong position to continue to educate our customers and drive sales. Our core values remain the same – offering parents fantastic high performance products – with real crown jewel features - at affordable prices. I am excited as we start a fresh year and look forward to bringing our customers a host of innovations ahead.” With all this growth it’s no surprise that the UK team has extended widely in 2015 with enhancements to its sales, marketing and Customer Services departments. All this puts Joie in a strong position for this year as this major player takes its game to the next level. With that in mind Joie are delighted to announce that well known industry figure Mike Evans has joined the team as sales manager. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience gathered over many years especially in the child safety seat category with Britax. Mike said; “I’m thrilled to be joining Joie at such an important time in the brands growth. I’m

looking forward to working with the Joie team, building on the strong foundations and driving forward the brand” David Welsh commented; “this new appointment once again shows Joie’s commitment to growth and support in the UK and Ireland for all retailers. Mike will be heading up, and immediately looking to strengthen, our crucial merchandising and training team which we believe has played a major part in our success to date, so watch this space!” To see the latest developments at Joie visit www.joiebaby.com.

focus CLEVAMAMA

Time for a bit of science with ClevaMama Fantastic announcement - expansion of ClevaFoam product range this spring to include their new ClevaSleep+ Positioner. Dublin based brand ClevaMama has recently enjoyed recognition from not only parents but also some of the world leading craniofacial surgeons along with the Society of Paediatrics in Brazil making ClevaFoam a global best seller. We asked Martina Craine, Director, a few questions about ClevaFoam and what all the fuss is about. Tell us a little about why and where ClevaFoam was researched and developed? The principle reason for developing ClevaFoam was to combat against Plagiocephaly which in recent years is reportedly effecting up to 48% of infants. Deformational Plagiocephaly, the medical condition more commonly known as ‘Flat Head Syndrome’, is now more prevalent than ever especially since the introduction of recommendations to place sleeping babies on their backs in order to prevent cot death - a campaign which has proved very successful. The research was carried out with a world renowned University at Trinity College in Dublin over a two year period. Using computational models researchers at centre for bioengineering in Trinity College performed multiple scientific analysis on ClevaFoam and found that it significantly reduced the pressure on an infant’s skull by up to 50% whilst also offering up to 80% more support. How does ClevaFoam helping to reduce FHS? ClevaFoam is one of the only non-invasive aids proven to help in the prevention and correction of Flat Head Syndrome. The study found both lower stress distribution on a baby’s head and lower strain

energy density when using ClevaFoam products ensuring natural growth and development. What is ClevaFoam made of? ClevaFoam is made from low resilience polyurethane foam. Unlike most other foams ClevaFoam has been specifically designed for infants and manufactured using an open cell structure making it lighter, more breathable, with reduced heat retention. What age is ClevaFoam suitable from up to? ClevaFoam products can be used from birth, with

the upper age limit depending on the product. Our products include mattresses, toddler pillows as well as our new ClevaSleep+ Positioner. Why should a retailer choose ClevaFoam? The fact is retailers want to sell products that have proof and not just fancy marketing material. Retailers want high volume, excellent quality and dependable products; here at ClevaMama we provide exactly that. Just check out our online reviews and see for yourself what consumers say about ClevaFoam.

REVERSO.PLUS The rearward innovation.

EASY HANDLING The convenient rotating wheels allow the leg supports and, in particular, the angle of sitting or lying to be adjusted.

EXTREME SAFE The new Reverso.Plus fulfills the strict stipulations of VTI, and passed the Plus Test in 2015. The “Plus” relates to the internationally recognised, independent Plus Test performed by Sweden’s national road and traffic research institute, VTI.

EXTRA LIGHT With the inlay for newborns inserted, the new Reverso.Plus weighs 10.9 kg – without the inlay it even weighs in at under 10 kg (9.9 kg).

focus HARROGATE NURSERY SHOW

The heart of Harrogate What makes the Harrogate International Nursery Fair tick? We spoke with show organiser Adrian Sneyd ahead of the doors opening to find out a little more about the show format this year. Harrogate International Nursery Fair has always been known as the ‘friendly fair’, why is this? Undoubtedly the longevity of the show contributes towards this. It has been running for more than 45 years with many of the same faces returning year after year. Everyone knows everyone and the nursery sector is extremely welcoming, so new companies soon feel part of the show and look forward to participating and meeting up with industry colleagues. This is the same with manufacturers, suppliers and retailers – Harrogate is a much looked forward to get together every year.

Association, plus the usual networking events, there is guaranteed to be a fantastic buzz this year. What makes this show such a ‘must attend’ event in our yearly trade calendars? For anyone involved in the nursery industry Harrogate is a ‘must attend’ event. Savvy retailers make a point of always attending as it gives them the opportunity to keep up with latest fashions and trends; discover new products and make important business connections. It might take them away from their stores for a few days, but the valuable information they will gain makes it well worth it.

Tell us a little about the location of the show, why is it located in Harrogate? The location of the show is one of its major attractions. It is centrally located in the UK and easily accessible by air, road and rail. Leeds Bradford Airport is just 12 miles away, it is right next to the motorway and trains from central London take less than three hours. Accommodation is much cheaper than London or Birmingham meaning visitors can afford to stay for the duration of the show – and of course the atmosphere is fantastic. Everyone attending the show enjoys visiting the bars and restaurants in Harrogate – it is a warm and friendly town and everything is within walking distance. Can you tell us what visitors can expect this year whilst in attendance? There are lots of brand new companies exhibiting at the show for the very first time. This means that visitors are guaranteed to find some exciting new products. There will also be a huge international presence with a delegation of Chinese buyers attending specifically seeking British baby products to cater for the expected demand with the relaxation of the one child policy in China. Together with another great Seminar Programme organised by the Baby Products 26

nursery today

Why is this good trend spotting event? Of course the majority of the products at Harrogate won’t be in shops until the autumn and winter and manufacturers and suppliers will start marketing these to consumers once they are ready for shop shelves. The majority of consumer baby media also attends the show and will be informing new parents about what is going to be ‘hot’ next season, so retailers attending the show will be ready to hit the ground running. Are you running any specific events that visitors should be aware of? The BANTA Awards Dinner (ticket only) takes place at The Majestic Hotel on the evening of Sunday 20th March and is always enjoyed by everyone with fantastic entertainment. Also, straight after the show on Monday (5.30pm) exhibitors and visitors are invited to join the organisers in The Royal Hall of the Harrogate International Centre for free drinks and canapés.

What type of products will visitors find s t lo year within the halls? e r There a ew this Visitors can expect to see literally every product imaginable for 0-5 years o f brand nes including some pregnancy and maternity baby clothing and bedding, compani the accessories, furniture, wheeled goods and car t feeding, cleaning and changing exhibiting ra the seats, toys and gifts – in show fo ime equipment, fact almost every baby product imaginable. very first t

What about the show seminars, how important are these to visitors? The BPA has been organising seminars at Harrogate for several years now and they are proving increasingly popular. The subjects are carefully chosen so that they are relevant to retailers and anyone attending can expect to learn something to benefit their business. This year subjects include market research company GfK sharing the latest industry sales statistics; The Institute of Mums will be presenting a report on the second-hand baby products market and how it affects new sales; and editor of B Baby magazine will talk about how the catwalk influences pushchair designs and how retailers can make sales by reflecting customers’ personal style when steering them towards a brand.

How do you encourage exhibitors to run ‘show only’ offers? We had a meeting with retailers in November 2015 who expressed the importance of show offers. The amount of money that they can save by placing orders at the show with significant discounts more than covers the cost of their attending. Many exhibitors hadn’t realised that this was such a great incentive, but now we have pointed it out they are happy to jump on board. There will be more show exclusives this year than ever before.

Harrogate is also the home of the BANTAS – have we experienced a good level of products entering this year? The BANTAs are hugely popular with everyone at the show. They are only open to companies exhibiting, but receiving an award is a great accolade for products as they have been chosen to stand out as being among the very best in the show. Buyers also take note of products receiving awards as it is endorsement that in the opinion of the judges, these will sell well.

How many exhibitors will there be this year? There will be around 130 exhibitors including many new companies from countries such as Poland, Spain, Italy and China.

A new era... In 2016 all eyes are on ABC Design with the arrival and launch of its innovative PLUS series in the UK.

T

he stroller series combines the highest levels of quality and functionality with distinctive design and striking good looks. Thus, ABC Design builds on the success of its international award-winning double/ twin buggy, Zoom, loved by UK parents for its unique flexibilityy and compact design. Not only in the UK, but also in no less than over 40 countries worldwide, ABC Design stands for a long term experience in the baby sector, outstanding German design and engineering as well as innovative strength. Driven and inspired by its view of the perfect stroller as a result of correlating know-how and passion with the sense of responsibility towards baby’s special needs, ABC Design’s strollers have been among the UK‘s most trusted and loved stroller brands for several years now. The Zoom tandem / twin pushchair, is a gold award winner in the category Best Double Stroller and two-time silver award winner of the Lovedbyparents Awards 2015. “It is well known and became a firm favourite in the UK,“ says Bernd Fischer, Manager Director of ABC Design. Zoom can be used equally well for twins or two children of differing ages as the Zoom is a highly adaptable and versatile double tandem pushchair. It provides a wide range

A t d th tt created the attachments so that they are child‘s play to reverse from world to parent-facing mode. “For the children, that’s definetely one of the features that makes the Zoom the nicest place to discover the world together,” Managing Director Jörg Zehe emphasises. Little passengers can sit one behind the other or have face to face interaction when laughing or playing. The Zoom has lots of space for both children, and yet is easy to manoeuvre with its swivel wheels. Although it seems to be long, it is surprisingly lightweight and compact, which is a bonus in confined spaces. With the brand-new PLUS series range, launching in the UK at Harrogate International Nursery Fair in March 2016, ABC Design sets standards in terms of function and design and builds on the great success of the Zoom. “We are proud to say that the PLUS series stroller models Cobra PLUS and Mamba PLUS come with unique intelligent functionalities,“ says Bernd Fischer. The innovative range of products boasts precisely those functions which are particularly important to parents

who are using a pushchair on a daily basis. “We believe, that nobody is better equipped to define these requirements than parents themselves, therefore we recognised the supreme value of the feedback and experience of parents when we were developing the PLUS range and took account of more than 3,500 reports and reviews.“ That’s how Bernd Fischer describes the product development process and launch of the PLUS series in Germany. The PLUS series provides intelligent features such as a seat unit with memory foam technology of optimum ergonomic design, a fully reclined position for absolute comfort when sleeping (including for babies who sleep on their sides and stomachs), an adjustable suspension system that can be set at three different levels of hardness, and naturally maximum ease of use for mum and dad. Not to forget, the stylish, urban look of the PLUS series, which is also available for the Zoom. High-quality materials and workmanship characterise the chic leather effect of the new PLUS series style designs with their handmade handle and bumper bars, labels and more original leather-look applications. Melange fabrics made from quality yarn in classy colours such as Graphite Grey and dark anthracite Street colourways, lend the style designs their unique character. Perfect choice for parents who rate design and aesthetics just as highly as clever features and quality.

ABC Design‘s commitment to quality provides parents from all over the world with security. “We are committed to high quality standards and are uncompromising when it comes to meeting them,” says Bernd Fischer and emphasises the importance of quality at ABC Design. Not surprising then, that all products from ABC Design are tested beyond international quality standards. ABC Design works with highly respected testing institutes in order to guarantee total product safety. Every detail of every single product is tested, without exception - from the frame to the fabric - for conformity with the high EN requirements, DIN quality and safety standards as well as conformity with the European Community Regulation on chemicals (REACH Regulation). The quality process begins during the product development stage and continues until the final production run. Parents can be sure that all pushchairs leaving the ABC Design factory have been extensively tested, have met the highest demands in terms of their mechanical safety and have satisfied the requirements set out in the international quality and safety standards. Moreover, ABC Design goes even one step further, however, not being content

just to meet the official safety standards, but wishing to exceed them. “Each model is put through its paces on our own real road test track, an intensive and varied test course which guarantees top quality and supreme safety, Bernd Fischer continues. “We are well aware

of the high level of responsibility we bear in our work. To deal with this trust in a responsible way is both a requirement and an obligation for us,” adds Jörg Zehe. This is what formed the ABC Design‘s character in its beginning, back in 1989 and what is still the core of all its work today. y

Strong partner in the UK S In the UK ABC Design is represented by its longstanding distributor Obaby, one of the leading and most sought after brands in the highly competitive UK baby and nursery market. 55 years young and going strong! East Coast Nursery - Hall A, Stand: A15 Being established for a very long time can often bring reflection, and perhaps make us feel like we need a little facelift!

F

or East Coast Nursery, celebrating 55 years in the industry marked the perfect time to update their look, and to grow their brand. Managing director Eric White explains what the company has been working on, and why East Coast Nursery are excited to meet you at Harrogate to show you their new branding and reveal why this is about so much more than a lovely new logo. “As a company we have aspirations to grow our customer base, and we know that consumers today are looking for brands like ours that they can trust. In an ever-changing, fast-paced industry like nursery products, we thought the time was right to clearly define who East Coast are, what our vision is, and what we want to deliver to parents today.” “East Coast Nursery have enjoyed a long association with good quality and great service, but it’s fair to say that we have been a solid ‘trade’ rather than consumer brand. As the UK’s leading manufacturer of the changing mat, and the iconic folding wooden highchair - seen in most restaurants and cafes nationwide, our research found that while most people owned our products, loved them, but just did't know who we were. We

wanted to put that right.” Working with Lisa Joyce of Luverly Baby, East Coast Nursery spent over six months reviewing both trade and consumers’ perception of them, with some of the industry’s leading buyers, movers and shakers! Eric explains, “We had a ‘warts and all’ review and it was liberating! We weren’t surprised by some of what we found, and it showed us where we needed to focus, but we were blown away by overwhelmingly positive feedback too.” Taking this research, the company made the decision to consolidate their focus, beginning to reduce distribution products, and making sure that only the very best products are given the East Coast logo. “Our rebrand has shaped our design, product development, marketing, and sales strategies and has really fundamentally changed the way we run our business,” Eric comments. One of the most exciting recent developments has been East Coast Nursery’s partnership with Baby Sensory, creating a range of intelligent toys. Launched at Toy Fair, the reception has been fantastic, with positive reactions from buyers, the press, bloggers and parents.

This year marks the start of a really exciting time for East Coast, with new developments in the pipeline as the brand introduce their products to a new generation. And while every brand must strive for improvement and innovation, it’s also vital not to lose sight of the principles at the core of the nursery industry. Eric concludes, “Being a family-owned and run company, we take our business fully to heart. Our brand has a long history, a purpose, and a strong set of values that have helped us drive this business with passion and commitment from day one. "We are proud of our heritage and our ethics; our commitment to quality hasn’t changed, but now we are determined to make sure our brand is recognisable to the consumer as a sign of high quality, ultimately helping us all to sell more. Our number one priority is to create a safe, stimulating environment for East Coast babies, and peace of mind for their parents and families.” The East Coast Nursery team look forward to welcoming you to their stand at Harrogate, and they can’t wait to hear what you think of their new brand.

belly for the child’s favourite books and toys. Also, new for this season is the Roly Poly Ralph rattle, suitable for toddlers 10 months plus. Later this year, Hape will be launching a new railway range which will include a nursery railway set and some fantastic, original and vibrant accessories suitable for 24 months plus. Back by popular demand are the George Luck puzzles. They will be making a return later in the year with some lovely, animal themed designs in both large and smaller, less, complex puzzles. New to the Marbel portfolio for 2016 is Kids Preferred. Within Kids Preferred, there are two nursery ranges – ‘Amazing Baby’ based on the well-known Amazing Baby book series and ‘Little Sport Star’. The Little Sport Star brand contains a range of developmental toys for newborn babies. These soft toys offer various textures and bright colours that not only stimulate your baby but promote tactile exploration, hand eye co-ordination as well as visual and auditory development. your babies entertained while ensuring toys are kept safe and close by. Little Sport Star cover football, golf and tennis themes and include a plush golf club, tennis racket and soft football rattle therefore offering something for everyone. Also within the Little Sport Star range is a football themed play gym suitable for newborns. The activity mat is designed to develop eyehand and foot co-ordination. The gym features an easy-to-clean surface and carrying case making it easy to pack up for a great day outdoors. The Amazing Baby range has been created and based on accepted research of how babies develop within the first two years. The colourful collection offers something for every baby, spanning from pram toys and teethers to soft books and activity toys. With sensory development in mind, the toys offer different textures, colours, sounds and shapes making these great fun to play with at every stage of early years development.

Easy to use, won’t strain back or tummy muscles and perfectly supports baby’s head and body Continued exposure for Snugglebundl Stand: HP133 The Snugglebundl has had a lot of exposure including Dragons Den, Simon Mayo show, Loose Woman, The One Show. They sell around 600 units at consumer shows and why Boots order more and more each year. Their product is the only invention that solves the age old problem of not waking a baby when moving them - even from the car seat to the crib. Why pay over £200 extra for a travel system when the Snugglebundl does just the same for the price of a garment? Unlike a heavy travel system it also helps with C-section recovery or any other post birth symptoms. It is basically a patented design for a wrap-around garment with handles that supports the body similarly to a hammock when lifted. Apart from keeping the child all cosy and warm it also relieves the parents of the worry of supporting their baby’s head correctly. Tested to 30kg. It can be used well after the 0-6 months recommended period. In summary it’s good for the parents health, the babies health and it makes life a lot easier too. Visit their stand to see it in action and they’ll show you how easy it fits in a car seat too. Tel: 01273 958703 Email: info@snugglebundl.co.uk Web: www.snugglebundl.co.uk

SALES AND MARKETING DIRECTOR

Why is Harrogate such an important trade event for our industry? We spoke with some of the industry’s finest to find out.

- APRAMO Why is Harrogate International Nursery Fair such an important yearly event for you? As a relatively new brand, we know that attendance at the shows is vital in gaining and building trust with our stockists. It’s also a great opportunity to catch up with everyone, with the best will in the world, we can’t get out to see everyone and of course we need to keep a finger on the pulse of the trade and the show is one of the best ways to do this. Can visitors expect to see new product launches on your stand this year and if yes, would you like to tell us a little about them? We are launching the ONE at Harrogate. This is a birth to 12 years seat, with Isofix or standard belt routing, a 5-point harness up to 25 kg and 360 rotation. We’ve already had many consumer enquiries on our Facebook page - in fact we’ve never been so busy! Will you be running any specific events on your stand this year? We will be offering a show discount, and also a competition where one lucky retailer can win their order for free. Yasmin from the NSG has kindly agreed to be our VIP and make the draw for us.

Judith Stark

MANAGING DIRECTOR - HALILIT Why is Harrogate International Nursery Fair such an important yearly event for you? It’s the only show where we can get face to face with all of our nursery customers and show them all of our new products as well as learning what products worked well and to hear how we can support them during the year. We have a lovely, large stand at Harrogate and this gives us the opportunity to demonstrate the features of many of our products that we are unable to do at other shows, especially our play mats and baby gyms.

Sam Crane BABYSTYLE

Why is Harrogate International Nursery Fair such an important yearly event for you? Harrogate is a vital fixture on BabyStyle’s events calendar. We have held a stand at Harrogate every year since 1985, and this year we are very proud to actually have one of the largest stands at Harrogate showcasing our fantastic range of products reinforcing just how much we value Harrogate and the opportunities that it gives retailers, visitors and exhibitors alike. Harrogate is a wonderful experience giving us the ability to exhibit our extensive portfolio in a relaxed and very pleasant environment. Can visitors expect to see new product launches on your stand this year and if yes, would you like to tell us a little about them? After the amazing response that BabyStyle received in 2015 with the launch of the egg at Harrogate, we are delighted at being able to use Harrogate again as a springboard to launch to the trade another amazing and iconic new product for 2016 in the Hybrid Edge. Much has been written and assumed about this contemporary new stroller but those visiting Harrogate will have the opportunity to get hands on and put this revolutionary new product to the test for themselves. Will you be running any specific events on your stand this year? This year along with unveiling the Hybrid Edge BabyStyle will be offering some amazing one time only show offers for Harrogate attendees. Buy one get one free and other awesome offers will be leaping out from the stand, across the Oyster2 and Max current range of accessories, plus our blanket and bedding collection. There will be deals available on the Arctic White and Gotham Black egg and astonishing incentives for the entire BabyStyle furniture range. But then if all of the above isn’t enough to entice you into joining BabyStyle maybe the offer of champagne and canapes from 5pm to 7pm during our Sunday after show party might just swing it?

Can visi visitors expect to see new product launches on your stand tthis year and if yes, would you like to tell us a little a about them? Yes, as usual we have lots of new products! Perhaps the most unusual is the Musical Boat Cot Toy from Taf Toys - we all ad adore this new item! It is unique and works as a cot toy th that fixes securely to the side of the cot with lots of movement, mov music and lights that project stars onto the nursery nurs wall. As baby grows, the unit can be used on the floo oor to aid tummy-time and then once baby starts to move, mo the boat detaches and can be used to promote crawling cr – we are entering this product for the BANTAs. Latest figures for Parenting Press

Nad ia Kha ld Head of Engagem i en Generation M ed iat at

The Audit Bureau of Circulations (UK) or ABC was founded to provide an independent verification of circulation/data figures to facilitate the buying and selling of advertising space within UK national newspapers/magazines. Women’s Weeklies and Parenting press are part of the Consumer Magazines report which is released twice a year in February and August.

I

n the latest ABC release in February, the 422 UK magazines audited by ABC lost circulation by an average of 4% year on year (YoY) in the last six months of 2015. The figures combine print circulation with digital edition sales. However, almost 60 magazines grew their circulations year on year and they show consumer magazine circulation faring better than the newspaper sector. Every women’s weekly magazine audited by ABC lost circulation in 2015. The bestselling title, Take a Break, remains on top but was down 3% to 589,495 PoP (9% YoY). The largest increase was OK Magazine which saw an uplift of 38% PoP, recovering the large drop in the last ABC results, but circulation is still down 3% YoY. The parenting press category has remained fairly stable, down 2% YoY but up 2% PoP. Emma’s Diary Guide and Gurgle has grown 4% and 2% YoY respectively.

Prima Baby is the title that has seen the largest drop in the category with a 34% decrease YoY. Although the parenting press sector has seen a drop in circulation and even closures clo of previously popular titles in the last three years, 15% of pregnant women and mums with baby 0-1 say they are very interested in magazines according to latest TGI research. The rreaders of baby and childcare m magazines are engaged and m more influential with their peers th than non-readers. 24% of re regular readers are influencers co compared to 20% of nonrea readers. Influencers are likely to post comments and reviews on online and convince friends and fam family to use products they like. The latest ABC results and TGI research show that although magazines still have a role on ma media plans, investment in me online li is crucial for marketers in the nursery sector. 43% of pregnant women and mums with a baby find advertising online most helpful in

Gift Lists and Wish Lists

Added value. More customers. Additional sales – what’s not to love? ow that the winner of the second £33m National Lottery jackpot has banked their prize, they are probably swimming in expensive bubbly and splashing out on yachts and Lamborghinis. Good for them, I say. Don’t we all have a personal wish list of things we would do if we won the big one? That’s why, this month I will be mostly rambling on about gift lists/ wish lists and why your nursery website really needs one. Think about it: if you’re waiting for the arrival of the newest addition to your family, you probably want to get everything arranged quickly, especially if it’s your first experience of parenthood. Offering a gift list or wish list facility on your site allows prospective parents and extended family the chance to work out exactly what they want or need, which from a retailing perspective is money in the bank because it gives you ample ammunition to get a sale.

Profiting from Gift Lists

The beauty of gift lists is that visitors to your website can set out a list of things they really want and then get

others to pay for them. Gift lists are found on the sites of major retailers; the idea is that for occasions like weddings and new babies, lists can be put together and shared with friends and family. If you are able to get a gift list facility onto your website then this is a potential revenue earner as you are

ish Just having a swbeen list facility ha duce shown to re ment basket abandon rates expanding the number of people who can realistically pay for your products, some of which may cost hundreds of pounds. Adding the ability to share those lists on social media and by email further expands the amount of potential people who can pay for a gift, which is great for you as a nursery retailer. Once items have been added to a gift list, there are opportunities to offer incentives and deals to encourage that sale, which is great but the best thing is that you already know that the customer wants to buy those items and what’s more they want to buy them from you.

Working with Wish Lists

Wish lists are in many ways similar to gift lists; instead of writing a list for others to pay, however, the visitor is writing a list of things that they really want for themselves at some point from your online store. This opens up all sorts of avenues for you as a retailer to sell more products and quickly. Just having a wish list facility has been shown to reduce basket abandonment rates as the fact the customer has a wish list means by default that they must have an account with you. The number one reason for basket abandonment is the need for customer registration on a website before purchase, but if that customer is already registered then this hurdle is removed completely. This means naturally lower basket abandonment for those who have wish lists. If a customer has bothered to set up a wish list, this usually means that they really want those items. This is great for you as a retailer as items with an emotional attachment give you real leverage to sell. Try the following for items in a wish list:

t h ave you go one?

ClevaFoam Pillows ®

New!

e.com r a c r e h t o w w w. m Offer a discount if the customer Offer purchases within a certain timeframe Offer bundle deals on the wish list. This can work surprisingly well! Think creatively and offer special discounts if that customer is willing to share their purchase on social media or write a great review for you (I especially like this one, as it gives some Search Engine Optimisation value as well). Send through regular emails, reminding that customer of the items in their wish list. While you’re at it, remind customers if items in their wish list come back in stock or you have new, updated versions of the items in store. If you have the facility, send SMS messages with special offers on items

in the wish list. Engage with clients who have lists on social media and build up a rapport. This may swing the deal. Above all, wish lists give you the chance to interact with your customers, which in itself gives you a better chance of converting a sale. Look at your customers’ wish lists and gift lists for that matter as an opportunity to increase the “stickiness” of your website and business for your customers. Creating community and connections with your customers from a business point of view can only be a good thing, because it means if there is repeat business to be had those customers are going to think of you first.

focus WHEELED WHEEL GOODS GOODS

Proud to push Pushchairs, strollers, prams, travel systems these are a necessity in nursery and a staple product for many nursery retailers.

ith new entrants in the wheeled goods category, you could be forgiven for thinking that there couldn’t possibly be room for each to survive (especially when we take a look at current consumer spending), but this just isn’t the case. Parents are continually looking for an item that offers great functionality coupled with kerb appeal. No longer do we see items bought just for practicality – we also see these items being purchased as a clear ‘trophy’ item. Mum wants her choice to match her personality and style almost as much as her choice of handbag! With this in mind, often mum will be side-tracked away from what is

actually suitable for her – although she may find herself having to ‘argue’ with dad on the final choice. It is becoming more and more evident that it’s not just the mums who get involved, dads are now hands on when it comes to the buying decision and may seek something just a little more masculine in choice (especially when we consider colours and handle height). Style and function are vital to all products in this category. The majority still want a ‘trophy’ item, but parents are now also looking more closely at the safety and the level of comfort afforded to their infants by each product - and this could be a driving factor in their final decision. Nichola Pass of Silvercross agrees:

“Parents continue to be interested in products that will make their lives easier – so convenience and practicality are key. There is also the need for products to fit with parents’ lifestyle, whether that is urban living or for more outdoor adventures.” Kevin Golding, Commercial Director of Bebecar feels that perhaps one notable change in this sector is the quality of a product, with more and more looking at the longevity offered. “I think consumers are moving away from ‘disposable’ baby products in general, and are looking for reliable, quality products that can be lovingly used and enjoyed, carefully kept, passed on, handed down, and enjoyed again. That’s great for the pushchair industry – we want people to buy once and buy right, so we ensure we offer a great aftercare service, such as servicing pushchairs on site.” And what about innovation - is this a sector that creates a higher level of innovation compared to other categories? Kevin Golding told us: “It can be tempting to constantly update a pushchair in pursuit of making it the smallest, lightest, or fastestfolding, but at the heart of everything we do needs to be the baby who will ride in it. “As manufacturers and retailers, it’s our job to help to educate the consumer about the importance of ensuring that baby is

comfortable; it’s sometimes easy to lose focus while seeking the latest must-have design or most up-to-date technical development. The look and style are definitely important – there’s so much choice in the pushchair market – so a product has to catch the eye of a customer flicking through a catalogue, browsing websites, or even walking on the street. We just need to make sure that our pushchairs feel as good as they look; baby’s comfort should be the first concern of manufacturers and new parents.” Independent retailer Gary Watts of WH Watts & Son, doesn’t feel that there is sufficient innovation coming through at present, but feels that this could all be about to change. “Innovation has been limited at best within the last few years but I think things are moving forward in this area now with several brands taking the lead, particularly BabyStyle, Dorel and Silver Cross who all have products on their way in the near future. “Innovative new products must be very expensive to bring to market, and you can understand suppliers’ reluctance to invest in them when the economy was struggling, but hopefully now that things seem to be improving more new products will be available.” Consumer trends continually change, and with new mums having more access to information, the purchase of their

chosen pram, travel system or pushchair isn’t just based on what looks good. The consumer is becoming far more aware of other issues that surround this purchase, like safety, functionality, can baby be parent facing and has it got the lie-back facility? “People are seeking reliability, comfort for their baby, and convenience for themselves,” said Kevin Golding. “As everyone’s lives get busier, and parents with young families travel more, consumers are seeking products that allow baby to join in comfortably with their plans and routines; and we can help this by providing products that are reliable and intuitive.” An aspect however that quickly becomes apparent to the parent is the vast choice available to them, and this is where the independent retailer can really come into their own. By offering a selection of choice, and of course their knowledge and expertise in this field, the results can be quite gratifying. Another point to note, especially when looking at those all-important add-ons that can make a sale even more lucrative, is that this is a category that has many accessories. From clip on toys, cup holders, parasols, footmuffs, raincovers - the list is quite extensive and paves the way for fantastic upselling.

NIGEL PLESTED

Lesson in etiquette Has it really reached the point where we need firm guidance on how to behave with our buggies in public? It may appear so.

Nigel Plested was on the th other th side id off th the pond a few weeks back, and on the news was a breaking story about a stroller fracas in the subway. Yes that seemingly ripe topic in the US, known as stroller rage. The story in question, resulted in two arrests and some hefty fines, not to mention an exchange of blows and some heated opinions on the rights and wrongs of (wait for it) stroller etiquette. Yes that’s right, stroller etiquette; the antidote to buggy rage. It’s an as yet undisclosed framework of un-written rules and regulations, which obviously eluded both myself, and my partner, who regularly encouraged heckling and vocal derision for ignoring the Modern Guide to Stroller Etiquette for Parents with No Manners. For example, when taking our stroller onto the tube, and indulgently heading into the West End, I‘ve both experienced and witnessed this disgust on many occasion, whilst travelling around the capital. Just this week, the Evening Standard ran a piece to highlight this trending urban topic. It turns out that my fictional and ridiculously titled guide to buggy management might just become a reality, as TFL (Transport for London,) is considering publishing an Etiquette Guide for new mums who want to use the bus and transport network. As a result, meetings with multiple mums’ groups and manufacturers have been organised in order to find solutions to the dilemma. According to varied media reports, a recent meeting to consider the issues at hand brought industry specialists, drivers and spokespersons for TFL together to consider the core challenges, which not only existed between those with wheels and those without,

with refined designs and stroller models, which can be instantly manhandled into neat folded form, or made a manageable size when embarking on a journey. However, sometimes parenthood isn’t quite so black and white; baby might be a newborn, and Mum might have had a ‘c,’ section just three weeks ago. There is also the possibility that babes in buggies, are probably far safer in a braked stroller, in a 5-point harness, whilst on a bus, than in the arms of a swaying parent grasping for a hand hold. This whole scenario might well be an innovation hurdle, which challenges us to break the product archetype, change some rules and create products outside of established categories, because it seems to me that buses and buggies work. They just don’t work together, and we might need to think in more holistic and creative ways to eradicate the need for rules and regulations. This is not just a UK only problem, and densely populated cites such as Hong Kong and Japan seem to have this nailed, with more emphasis on mobility, and flexibly. The solutions might be cultural not commercial. Whatever the outcome, it seems that this is something uniquely modern, and something that might influence what we design as our metropoli continue to grow into mega cites. I think the UK has always had our own take on strollers and maybe we need to broaden our horizons, and adapt, adopt and embrace ideas from elsewhere. So next time you see a bendy bus, or crowded train, think about what would work. In the meantime I am looking forward to the first draft of the etiquette guide so I can improve my mobility manners next time I head into town.

but territorial disputes between rival stroller owners, where prized spaces on the move are jealousy guarded and fiercely protected. Suggestions (apart from a guide and set of rules to buggy management) have included more sympathetic design approaches to the fixed seating layouts within the carriages and cramped environments of the bus and rail rolling stock. However, such dramatic and investment heavy solutions would not be something achievable in the short term. So with vehicular redesign off the drawing board, a TFL director has muted that a range of solutions have been suggested by manufacturers and retailers. Mike Weston, of TFL announced, “There were really good ideas coming out and we will capture that and turn it into a plan.” One of these suggestions, reported in the press, is a bus friendly kite mark system to allow parents to identify transport suitable strollers. This would be married with messaging campaigns, and reminders of what is expected of parents on their way from A to B, in order to avoid conflicts within what TFL have identified as a ‘pain point’ for passengers. What might this mean for how we design, make and label strollers in a marketplace already over complicated and full of indicators and warnings about safety and suitability? And would consumers like this kind of guidance? How would we all sign up to a set of criteria, which dictates the critical factors? Or is it an endorsement opportunity for transport businesses to provide approval and their mark of support? The presumptions are that better strollers, or smaller strollers will dilute the problem, with many issues solved

Meeting your needs One problem faced by many independent retailers is the ability to hold vast quantities of stock. The good news is that by using a credible wholesaler this no longer becomes an issue.

he majority of retailers get their stock from either a distributor or a wholesaler and there are differences between the two. We asked those involved to explain the key benefits retailers gain when using a wholesaler. Jane Wilkinson from babyprice told us: “The biggest advantage to the retailer is that they can keep their stock levels down which helps with cash flow. We encourage our retailers to buy little and often to keep their stock fresh and their cash in the bank.” Rebecca Hamilton from Baby Brands Direct said: “Many manufacturers are unable to service the independent sector due to the costs and organisational structure required. But by working with Baby Brands Direct, retailers can access these powerhouse brands at the manufacturer’s trade price. “Retailers can efficiently purchase from over 50 brands without setting up accounts with each or incurring minimum order values. We also offer same day dispatch, frequent tailored promotions, sales of up to 50% off trade, volume discounts and annual loyalty credit, all allowing retailers a competitive edge or extra margin. “The team works hard to ensure retailers are well equipped with product and brand knowledge, providing multiple images and detailed descriptions of each product, sell sheets, video clips – including those taken in

the Baby Brands Direct studio, interviews with brand leaders and producing a colour catalogue. There are also regular online quizzes for retailers to test their knowledge and win free stock.” Jane added: “The wholesaler is buying in everything whereas with a distributor we are buying in what we need. From our point of view, it is the price: retailers can buy just one piece of an item from us rather than a full box. The price is the same as if they went to the manufacturer, delivery is next day and it’s free when they spending just £200 excluding VAT. “We don’t sell to the public, but promote the retailers who stock our brands, driving business to their shops.” But what is the difference between a wholesaler and distributor? Rebecca Hamilton answered that one for us: “While distributors service independents and multiples, wholesalers tailor their operations to the specific requirements and individual needs of the independent trade. As a wholesaler, our services include a live stock updates page with ETAs allowing retailers to follow products of interest, emails on price changes on products a retailer has been buying, an address book facility for multiple store locations, drop ship service and a dedicated enquiry system for product aftercare services. “We are also able to offer customers a

wider range of brands and products than a distributor typically would. Over the last two months, we have launched 350 new products and are offering free product CSV files of these to help retailers identify and learn about the new products, as well as easily upload to their own websites. We also run a New Season feed on the website to help retailers keep up with the new launches.” Jane Wilkinson, babyprice, who operates across both sectors, gave us her definition: “As both a wholesaler and a distributor of nursery products, we understand the difference between the two. A wholesaler sells brands that are available in many different outlets, e.g. TOMY, Safety 1st, Avent, etc., all which can be bought from a number of wholesalers or other outlets. A distributor represents the manufacturer in another country and is the only outlet for that brand in that territory. For example, we are the UK distributor for Dooky and so all their stock is purchased though us. As we champion the independent retailer, the independents get the best possible deal and maximum promotion.” So, is now the time for you to get on-board with a wholesaler? These companies provide you, the independent retailer access to products that you may not be able to acquire under a different buying umbrella, giving you the benefit to remain competitive with your larger rivals.

Help them to understand that when they walk into your shop that they are dealing with the person who speaks to the brands direct. Now is the time to make sure that you’ve packed the charger for your smartphone or tablet because this time you’re going to snap and share and comment and post like never before. If you don’t have an Instagram account yet then set one up today – it will take five minutes; and make sure you have the Twitter and Facebook Pages Manager apps installed on your devices. The Harrogate Show is amazing; you’re launching exciting new wares and you want people in the UK to buy them. Don’t lock the consumer out for three days… let them in, even just a little. It’s content and today’s digital marketing challenge revolves around exactly that. I’ll meet any of you reading this for a cuppa if you want to pick my brain about your own digital marketing – just send me an email and it can be arranged. After all, we’re all in this industry together. Good luck, and have fun!

arents visit shops to buy prams, high chairs, nappies, changing stations, and much else besides but whenever they buy something and whatever they buy there is one question that is never far from the front of their minds – is it safe? They have the most precious cargo and they want to protect their little bundle of joy so they are keen to buy items and products that will protect their infant. All products sold in the European Union should be marked with a “CE” showing that they have been certified safe. The consumer wants to be able to find a decent selection of safety products in stores, not just online, so they can touch, feel and see the products in stores. And indeed all baby products should go through rigorous testing before they are allowed anywhere near the market. Alana Moscaritolo from BrotherMax said: “All of our products are thoroughly tested to ensure the safety and usage is up to the highest of standards possible. Safety is a fundamental building block to establish consistency with the products our company produce.” Safety is indeed paramount as soon as baby arrives home from hospital but its need becomes even more apparent as baby starts to crawl and grows into an inquisitive toddler. Indeed, it is that aspect of the selling experience that is so important as retailer Kym Brice of Baby Pride from Handley told us: “Mums and Dads – especially new parents – are always keen to know how safe something is, and what tests it has undergone.” In fact, it seems that hazards and risks lurk around almost very corner for little ones so parents have to be on their guard all the time.

Alana Moscaritolo said: “We supply parents with everything they will ever need to help raise their children from little babies to toddlers, from nought to three years old.” Roger Cheetham, the managing director of Clippasafe, commented: “Those that perceive the dangers, do so as soon as their child starts to crawl. Others engage after it is too late – when their child has injured themselves, had an accident, or worse.” One of the most obvious safety implements is the safety gate that can be attached at the top or bottom (or both) of stairs to stop babies and small children tumbling down or walking up and being unable to get down again. Darren Curtis of Dreambaby told us: “Many consumers buy two safety gates at a time. With the Dreambaby Retractable Gate you don’t need to buy two gates as this item is relocatable ... however most consumers buy just one gate for the bottom of their stairs. Nowadays the metal pressure mounted safety gates seem the most popular though wall-mounted safety gates are still popular especially for top of stairs. “It makes sense to buy more than one gate as there are various locations in the home that could be more secure to keep toddlers away from potential danger... or pets away from toddlers if need be.” Roger Cheetham agrees that this is an essential item for the home: “Yes. Every family with a child needs at least one stair gate, usually two, one at the top of the stairs and one at the bottom.” It is useful to know that manufacturers are doing their best to ensure that babies and toddlers are as safe as they can be.

A safe feeding alternative Maguari The Baby Safe Feeder takes the scariness out of weaning, allowing baby to experience different foods without the risk of biting off and swallowing or inhaling a chunk. Developed by a Dad after his son choked on a piece of teething biscuit, the Baby Safe Feeder is a simple mesh net attached to a plastic holder. A variety of foods can be placed in the net which baby can then chew and suck on, deriving all the flavour and goodness without actually biting pieces off. Suitable from age five months, the Baby Safe Feeder is also an ideal soother for teething babies, providing instant relief when filled with ice or frozen fruit. Little ones stay clean when using the Feeder as the food only comes through the net as quickly as baby can chew and suck on it. The Baby Safe Feeder is dishwasher safe, and replacement nets can be purchased separately. Tel: 01293 592170 Web: www.maguari.com

Keeping toddlers safe for 10 years Little Helper It’s hard to believe that 10 years have passed since the Little Helper FunPod launched onto the nursery scene. The FunPod was born through Director, Kim Johnson’s desire to keep daughter safe in the kitchen. Not wanting to stand Aimee on a chair or worse, on the worktop, Kim trawled the internet to see if she could find anything that would fit the bill. Not finding anything, Kim and husband Sean leapt into the unknown and brought what is now a multi award-winning safety device to market. Now sold all over Europe and in the US and Canada, the FunPod and other Little Helper branded products will soon be entering the Japanese and Chinese market. Fully tested to international standards, Little Helper regularly tests all their products to ensure that only the safest materials and techniques are used to ensure that our little ones are safe all round. Roger Cheetham, safety expert and Managing Director of Clippasafe, the 55 year old British company specialising in products to protect children in the home says that parents need to be more aware of dangers like this and that they should know about the simple but effective steps they can take to minimise the risks. “The problem is that many dangers in the home are unforeseen by parents until it’s too late. focus WOODEN TOYS

Wooden it be fun? An alternative to modern technology, wooden toys have been popular for decades and generations.

Woo den toy s can “ la st a li fe t ime an d a re o ften p as se d do w n t h rou gh t h e fa m ily ”

Sarah Dayus, Gr eat Gizmos

o many it would seem that they are an old-fashioned toy, more reminiscent of a Victorian or Edwardian parlour, the young master pulling along his wooden puff-puff as Papa looks on admiringly. Yet things are different now. Parents are seeing the value of wooden toys – their educational value, their sturdiness, their longevity and the fact that they do not need batteries. A point that Sarah Dayus of Great Gizmos is in total agreement with. “Traditional wooden toys are making a real comeback and I believe this is due to their educational play elements, along with their longevity,” she told us. “Wooden toys can last a life time and are often passed down through the family.” Debbie Grant is the Sales and Marketing Director of Maguari (UK), the distributor for Oops, which offers an extensive range of modern, captivating, high-quality wooden toys. She said: “In the new world of technology where children know how to use smartphones from an early age, wooden toys bring nostalgia and a sense of simplicity, style and class to a child’s toy collection. There is something special about

having a toy made from natural material.” Jimmy Cochrane runs The Kiddie Store, a small shop in south London, and he has a section devoted to wooden toys among the more familiar baby and toddler items. “I’m old enough to remember wooden toys from the first time round,” he laughs. “I do think that there is a place for them and my customers would seem to agree. Parents, especially grandparents, don’t all want to give gadgets to their children.” Anthony Temple is the managing director of Rainbow Designs. He believes: “Wooden Toys are very much back in fashion and we are seeing that gift-packaged wooden toys are definitely on the up. Wood is very tactile which encourages babies and toddlers to explore their toys using all their senses and wood combined with plush certainly makes a winning combination when it comes to nursery toys.” There is also an ecological aspect to wooden toys as some companies choose wood that has been farmed in a “green” or sustainable way. Sarah said: “We use FSC wood; it’s safe and wears well. It comes in a variety of vibrant colours that appeal to young children.” “There is a mixture of woods used in toys today: beach, maple etc but it really depends on the nature of the product,” said Anthony Temple. “Each type of wood has different

qualities so it is a case of finding the right type of wood for each product design.” As Jimmy Cochran said, “it is often but not exclusively the older members of the family that buy wooden toys. They do seem to be bought by family members rather than friends.” Debbie Grant added: “Generally, these are bought as gifts by family members and friends as wooden toys are visually appealing and are keepsakes that can be passed down. But parents are also finding it refreshing to get away from the sea of lights, music and plastic and enjoy seeing how something as simple as a few wooden blocks never fail to capture a child’s imagination.” The expression about judging a book by its cover is appropriate insofar as packaging is also important as Sarah Dayus points out. “Wooden toys are extremely popular gift items. Packaging is important in this category as people buying presents want them to look nice in gift style boxes. “Retailers will benefit from having a good wooden range because consumers are looking for these products,” said Sarah Dayus. Debbie Grant added: “Wooden toys are timeless and can be suitable for a really wide age range of children, they also offer something a little more unique and giftable.” “Retailers are constantly looking for the right mix of products to fill the shelves, products that provide their customers with variety across all sectors,” said Anthony Temple. “Many retailers now display in categories and wooden toys is very much a growing category.” So far from being an item from a bygone age, wooden toys are very much a modern and contemporary product.
