LinkedIn: Nursery Today

Firstly welcome to the March issue. I’m sure you will have noticed our newly launched Eco and Sustainability supplement included this month. With so much attention at the moment on climate change and how we impact our environment the team here at Nursery Today felt now was the time to highlight a variety of brands who are looking closely at not only their own carbon footprint but also at their manufacturing processes. The supplement also brings you articles of interest from the Soil Association, OEKO-TEX, FSC and JMDA Design. We hope you enjoy reading the contents of the supplement as much as we enjoyed putting the content together.

So, to this issue. This month we highlight a number of product categories, including wheeled goods, sleeptime products, traditional toys and we shine the spotlight on infant bottles.

You will also find among the pages Pramland’s John Barker who takes a look at current consumer spending, utilising social media (if you’re an avid TikTok fan I’m sure you’ve spotted John already active and busy on Social Media!) and trends that have emerged in general when we look at colourways for 2023. While over at Online4baby the future is looking positive with the business firmly focussed on their own strategy for the next few months while consumers continue to deal with the ongoing cost of living crisis.

You will also have noticed our Cover Hero this month is Cosatto. Cosatto have unleashed a new collection with all their trademark styling and craftsmanship… but jet-black. Based on years of research into baby-sensory design, discover why this plain black design is anything but plain by turning to our Cover Story over on page 8.

Finally, you will notice that I’ve cut my Editor’s letter to you all short this month as while penning my message to you all, news arrived in from The Baby Products Association which I felt was important to also publish here and an article I hope you find of interest.

Talking car seats

How R44 car seat laws will affect you from September 2023

Most of us are already aware of EU laws regarding R44 car seats and the introduction of the newer, more robust R129 regulation. The Baby Products Association explains how sales of R44 car seats will be affected from September 2023.

Background

Child restraints (CRS) must be approved to a United Nations (UN) regulation to be legal to use in the UK, as well as other countries around the World. There are two CRS regulations in force: UN Regulation No. 44 (R44) and UN Regulation No. 129 (R129). R44 is an older regulation first introduced in the 1980s. Recent changes to R44 mean it can no longer be used by CRS manufacturers to approve a new restraint. Instead, they must use the more advanced R129.

What is Changing?

CRS that are already approved to R44 can continue to be manufactured, sold and used, but things are changing in some countries. As well as stopping new approvals, R44 was also changed to give countries the option of not accepting R44 CRS anymore after 1st September 2023. This means that countries can choose to stop the sale of R44 CRS from this date.

In the European Union (EU), separate legislation is in force that means they will follow this cut-off date for R44 CRS. However, the EU saw that more time was needed to sell CRS already manufactured and in stock. They updated their legislation to allow an extra 12 months for CRS already placed on the market by 1st September 2023. This means that no R44 CRS can be sold in the EU after 1st September 2024.

Making sure we don’t confuse Regions:

This EU legislation does not apply in Great Britain (England, Scotland & Wales) and so R44 CRS can continue to be sold after September 2023 with no restrictions. However, the EU legislation does apply in Northern Ireland, due to post-Brexit trade arrangements, but that might change in the future. As far as we know, the UK Government has no plans to stop the sale of R44 CRS, but of course that might also change.

The EU legislation applies only to the sale of R44 CRS in their territory. R44 CRS can continue to be used in the EU, so if you travel to the EU for a holiday with your R44 CRS, it will still be legal to use there.

What does this mean for manufacturers in Great Britain (England, Scotland & Wales)

Many CRS brands produce their products for sale in EU markets, which combined are of course normally bigger in market turnover size than Great Britain. They must make their own decisions as to whether or not they continue past the above dates to produce R44 CRS for sale in Great Britain. Some have already taken the decision to exit R44 CRS sales in line with the above EU legislation and will not make CRS specially for the Great Britain, however, this is purely a commercial decision. New bookings for Harrogate open with new hall focus

After a hugely successful 2022 show; and four halls of the Harrogate Convention Centre already almost full for 2023 with returning exhibitors; Harrogate International Nursery Fair is now open for all new exhibitor bookings and stand allocation.

Adrian Sneyd, show organiser, explains: “We don’t belive in pressure selling during our show for the following years, and we will always give existing exhibitors the first opportunity to rebook for the next year’s show prior to opening  up space to new companies.

“We are delighted with the take up for 2023 and can already confirm that  four of the five halls we have available are almost fully booked; and we’re only just into March!

“From now onwards and right up to the show we will be allocating exhibitors into the ‘new’ Hall Q.  For the first time, this hall will also feature its own direct entrance into the fair before leading naturally through to the other four halls. This wil help give a focus for visitors to be able to target new brands and products more easily.”

Better for Babies

Revolutionary research meets a new aesthetic.

Cosatto have unleashed a new collection with all their trademark styling and craftsmanship… but jet-black. Based on years of research into baby-sensory design, discover why this plain black design is anything but plain…

Cosatto’s famous sensory designs are engaging babies worldwide. Their new Silhouette collection reflects the

same brand heritage, same design expertise, same distinctive quality, still baby sensory, still design driven –this is signature Cosatto with the thought and craftsmanship customers have come to expect.

Amid this new atmospheric aesthetic, Cosatto’s classic sensory hood takes centre stage - with their trademark baby-engaging patterns within. From working with the UK’s leading baby labs, to

harnessing early sensory skills with designs that encourage engagement, they’re committed to their ‘Better for your Baby’ ethos and the Silhouette collection is no different. It is the culmination of years of research into happy babies, weaving the science into their designs and honing their famous brand handwriting.

Driving a Revolution

Cosatto’s famous sensory hoods are big news nowadays – but there’s more to it than storytelling patterns kids love. The award-winning nursery brand have been driving a revolution for years. Vicky Morley, Cosatto Creative and Marketing Director, reflects on how it all began. “Amid a sea of dull prams and pushchairs on the market, parents began to feed back to us how their babies loved our patterned prams… and so the revolution began.”

Research and Results

Cosatto joined forces with the Baby Lab at the

University of Sussex, undertaking an extensive research programme. This included the use of eye tracking while babies viewed their patterns, in order to understand which elements held their attention most. Over the years, they have applied this knowledge to their design process, using a scientific approach to all their pattern designs.

Discover the power of pattern.

Unique Sensory Hoods

Cosatto are the only pram and pushchair brand to apply science to the pattern design process. Their unique sensory hoods are crafted to capture babies’ attention. From high contrast to spotting the odd-oneout, it’s an exciting process. Their unique sensory hoods are designed to engage. When a parent places their baby under a Cosatto travel system sensory hood, they’re harnessing early sensory skills. At a time when the brain is like a sponge, absorbing and making connections at an incredible rate, visual stimulation can optimise that development.

Cosatto’s carefully designed visuals are developed to capture the baby’s gaze and harness their early sensory skills- this attention to detail leading to an attentive, more content baby. As their ethos has borne out, “an engaged baby is a happy baby.” Designs that encourage engagement have big benefits.

Three Benefits of Cosatto

Sensory Hoods

Across the world, parents enjoy the benefits of their babies being engaged and enchanted by the sensory hoods on their Cosatto travel systems. With 3 million happy babies so far…and counting, the benefits speak for themselves.

1.Keeps babies calm and focused.

Surrounding babies with colours and patterns in their first pram makes things more interesting in those precious early weeks – giving them a focus for visual exploration to help them develop their sensory skills.

2.Helps their early cognitive development.

The baby’s gaze is attracted by visuals that are carefully designed to keep them calm and enrich their neural networks. The different shapes and patterns in Cosatto sensory hoods are designed to strengthen new neural pathways and boost their brain development.

3.Brings parents peace of mind.

An engaged, content baby means happier, calmer parents. A baby cooing happily in their travel system can give parents a hands-free moment. Even just sitting quietly nearby, they can be happy in the knowledge their baby is growing and learning.

The Result? Better for Babies.

That’s why Cosatto create patterns babies love. They’re harnessing baby science to drive the development of new patterns and products to amp up their positive impact even more. The possibilities are endless.

Gaining momentum

Independent nursery retailer, My Baby Stroller, is a family run, Birmingham based business who relocated in 2022 to larger premises. Their area of expertise lies within selling prams, pushchairs, strollers, travel systems and double strollers. Nursery Today caught up with owners, Richard & Laura Smerdon to find out their views on the wheeled goods category.

With the current cost of living crisis, do you feel that new parents are looking more at the cost of their chosen set of first wheels?

Price is definitely important now. For some, the desire to have their perfect pram wins. And for those who want to make some savings without compromising on quality and function, it is a great time to check out some

lesser-known brands that tick all the boxes and save you some pennies. Are they looking more at features that might be offered when making their final selection?

We’ve found this 50/50, new features and gimmicks are hyped up and favoured by a lot of new parents. But many just want something that will suit their lifestyle. I think most parents are swayed by the look and feel of the stroller rather than any special features it has.

Do you feel that this category has sufficient innovation?

Some brands are really pushing the boundaries and keeping people guessing on what they will come up with next, the designs and trends change with the seasons.

How important are brand names to your customers?

Many people we see just want an attractive and practical stroller and are happy to be introduced to new brands. It’s probably about 50/50 as brand names do go a long way with some, their social

media presence and suggestions by family and friends hold a lot of sway.

Does lifestyle play an integral role in how a product is chosen?

Definitely, prospective parents imagine their lives with their new baby and how they can keep their own hobbies and interests going. Their stroller needs to be able to fit into their lives and enable them to do what they want.

Is this a sector that is researched online prior to purchase and does Social Media play a role?

Social media plays a huge role, brands that have a big social media presence do well. I think after the last few years where you could only get things online, people are researching online more than ever. However, nothing beats seeing and testing it in real life and we are seeing this strongly in store.

Do you feel that this is an oversaturated product sector at present, or is there room for everyone who currently manufactures wheeled goods?

I think there is a lot of choice out there, but brands that are evolving and coming out with different styles and ideas will find room in the market.

Are you customers looking for one hand fold as a standard feature?

Customers are always impressed by a one-hand fold, but I think as long as it folds easily and fairly compactly, it is not always a deciding factor.

How important is the weight and size of products that fall into this category with your customers?

retail MY BABY STROLLER

Richard with business partner (and wife) Laura

We are seeing a lot of customers favouring smaller, compact strollers, but it really depends on the specific category of the stroller they are looking at. If you have two similar travel systems and one is lighter, it does make a difference.

With the majority of prams or pushchairs available having the ability to go through from birth to approx. age 4 also adapting as a

travel system, do you feel we might see a decline (again due to cost of living) in the time when parents will turn their attention to purchasing a second set of wheels?

Currently I would say no, we still get many parents opting to get a second smaller stroller, once their child is a little older, for ease of use.

I think many parents see benefit in having two different strollers as

well. The smaller strollers that adapt to travel systems will grow in popularity, many go from 0 in lie flat mode, but parents prefer their new-born to be secure in a cocoon or carrycot .This category is still developing and currently most are still buying these strollers without the new-born features.

Are you currently experiencing any specific current or upcoming

consumer trends within this category?

Compact fold strollers are still the main trend for us. We always get asked for this, and a compact folding travel system always impresses.

The wheels of industry

When we look at the wheeled goods product category, this is often a great staple for many retailers, with bundles proving exceptionally popular, we asked Dorel’s Junior Field Marketeer Rose Landreth if current cost-of-living is having an impact on purchasing behaviour within this sector. “The cost-of-living crisis is making new parents consider cost across all of their purchases more than ever before.” Said Rose. “We know that parents want the best for their new arrival including the safety and comfort of their travel system which is why it’s important to offer parents options at a range of price points to suit their budget.”

Joie’s Head of Product Development, Damon Marriott agrees commenting “The current crisis will undoubtably influence how much new parents have to spend in general, however with a new baby being such a special addition to the family many will stretch where they can in order to choose a stylish system, so it is essential to have a range at various prices to capture all budgets.”

Is this also a category where brand names play a pivotal role. We asked independent retailer Little Angels Owner, Kelly Carter for her thoughts. “Known brands have always been important as these often give our customers peace of mind that the goods they are buying are from a trusted, safe and by an established brand. There is nothing more precious in the world than a baby and our customers want to know that the goods they are buying are of the highest quality.”

This is a category that is steeped in choice, we also took this opportunity to ask Ergobaby’s Marketing Manager Holly Brewer if she felt this is a sector that has sufficient innovation? “This is a category with ample room for innovation across all areas and its solutions that make parents’ lives easier that generate the most interest with consumers. Small details can make the largest difference: adjustable handlebars,

one-hand folds, infinity reclines, all the way through to larger considerations such as suitability from newborn through to 4 years old and whether a product looks and feels like a premium offering.”

Commenting on innovation, Kelly’s customers enjoy the choice now available to them adding: “We have seen new innovations the last couple of years, we find our customers really like their pram to fold with the seat unit attached (saving on space) and the overall space when folded is important when deciding on which system to purchase.”

Lifestyle is naturally another deciding factor, with Kelly also commenting that they always ask specific questions when talking to customers stating “This is definitely dependent on the needs of the customer and we will advise accordingly. For example, do they need an all-terrain for dog walks or are they more likely to be getting a bus in to town to navigate the shops. Once we get an idea for their needs we keep plenty of choice in store to cater for every lifestyle.”

Holly also feels lifestyle is a driving factor telling us “Lifestyle plays a significant role in which pushchair is right for which family. For example, there was a time that compact strollers were only purchased for travel or for an older child but now there are multiple reasons that parents choose to use a compact stroller from birth. They benefit those who live in urban areas and regularly use public transport, those without the storage space in their homes or cars for a large system with multiple pieces, those who only plan to have one child or only want to purchase one stroller, or those who simply don’t want the bulk and complications of a full travel system.”

With parents being information hungry, is this also a sector that is heavily researched online prior to purchase? “We know that parents extensively research in this category before making a purchase and social media is a key part of that process.” Said Holly, adding “New parents seek recommendations

and reviews across a range of platforms to make an informed choice on this significant purchase. Social media offers parents access to a vast amount of real-life experiences from other parents and influencers to aid their decision. It’s a great opportunity for brands and retailers to support their journey by providing demonstrations, reviews and information in posts and engaging videos via social media channels.”

When consumer facing, Kelly does feel that sometimes social media can be confusing to her customers, stating “We do find that our customers run research prior to entering the store, but sometimes you can research too much, and it can get quite confusing, so we like to start from the beginning with our customers. We normally find they end up purchasing something completely different to their initial idea once in store. Social media does however play a part and we’ve seen a rise in people asking for particular models and colorways that they’ve seen influencers pushing.”

And what about additional features, how important are these to the consumer? “Feature rich products will always be a bonus but many choose their wheels based on how stylish the product looks.” States Damon. “However, practicality is also important – consumers look for something that will fold easily enough for storage or that have a feature that is specific to the mode of transport they use, like one hand folding for public transport use.”

Finally, what about trends, are we seeing new trends emerging? “We’re seeing positive trends towards eco-conscious buying behaviours and the consideration of sustainability in purchase decisions across the nursery industry.” States Rose. “This is a trend we expect to accelerate in the coming years as brands and consumers alike place greater emphasis on their eco-credentials.”

Wagons Are Rolling!

NEW to the UK, WonderFold is a range of multi-terrain stroller wagons, designed to enhance family outings and adventures for children from six months old.

WonderFold Wagons wheeled into the UK on Thursday 16 February with WagonFest; a fun-filled festivalthemed launch event at Center Parcs Woburn Forest.

Over 100 press and influencer VIP ‘festival-goers’, plus their children, were the first families to experience the WonderFold Wagons first-hand in the UK. Already a household name in the U.S, and used by celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and Chrissy Teigen, as well as Kim and Khloe Kardashian, WonderFold Wagons are destined to be this summer’s family must-have.

WonderFold #WagonFest made an impactful debut and kicked-off a Summer of fun for WonderFold and their marketing team. Content flooded social media with parenting press and influencers alike taking snaps of their children enjoying ‘Wagon Rides’ on the test track and around the festival, which resulted in a combined following reach of just under four million for the brand.

WonderFold is also being introduced to audiences at exhibitions up and down the country, including the NEC Birmingham’s annual Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show, as well as The Baby Show Excel, 3-5 March. The launch is also supported with an active PR, social and Influencer marketing campaign over the months to come.

WonderFold Wagons can accommodate a wide age range, holding several children at once, with a weight capacity of up to 21-stones! Fully safety certified, they are packed full of features, including a five-point harness to help make parents’ lives easier, leaving kids safe, secure and happy.

Baby Central is the UK’s sole distributor of the WonderFold. Marketing Manager Amy Sellers commented: “We are excited to bring such a popular U.S product over to the UK as the exclusive distributor. Feedback from the launch event has been overwhelming, but this is only the start of the WonderFold Wagon’s journey. Our ongoing marketing plans have been designed to maximise consumer interest and demand.”

With several ranges, and even a special edition, there is a WonderFold to suit every family. WonderFold Wagons come with a multitude of features www.babycentral.co.uk

A stroller that won’t break the bank, or your back! The MB02 stroller, weighing in at less than 10kg, still manages to pack in plenty of features. Suitable from birth, this stroller has 3 recline positions, adjustable foot-rest and 3 canopy positions for protection from all the elements! And with four brilliant designs, great value doesn’t have to mean simple!

Nothing is a greater adventure than being a parent. So bring your little one along with the MyBabiie Explorer range. Efficiency doesn’t have to mean boring. The stylish and durable MB03 with leatherette features and smooth manoeuvrability, makes being on the go all the easier and a large storage basket for everything you need. The wide canopy, rain cover and matching footmuff makes it so even the weather can’t stop your adventures.

The second stroller part of the Explorer Range is the MB52. Designed for parents on the go, suitable from birth with it’s lie-flat seat and newborn insert, this stroller grows with the child. Adjustable leg support, viewing window and storage pocket, the MB52 is built around parent and child. With a free footmuff,

raincover and matching changing bag, this stroller doesn’t stop giving. The bag easily attaches to the stroller adding to its stylish charm as does the leatherette handles and bumper bar, a signature of the Explorer Range.

The MB51, the most popular My Babiie stroller and we can see why! Equipped from head to toe, with lockable and swivelling wheels, and a handy storage basket, you can take this stroller just about anywhere! Packed to the brim with features such as a fully reclinable seat, height-adjustable handles and a neat, compact fold this stroller has everything you need in one, great design.

Not forgetting the MB11, their first double stroller. Despite being lightweight, weighing in at just over 10kg, the MB11 is sturdy enough to handle 2 kids, up to 15kg, in each seat! Twice the kids, means twice the goods, so there are large storage baskets and easy to access pockets behind each seat too! As well as all this, the twin stroller comes complete with a raincover and not one, but two cup holders. One superb design, that’s perfect for two.

Empire - Deluxe City Travel System

Venicci Empire Deluxe City Travel System includes everything expectant parents are looking for and more! It comes as a 9-piece bundle and is suitable from newborn until 4 years of age, which means it will grow with the child and serve parents for a long time.

Fully reclinable seat unit allows parents to use it from the day the baby is born. It ensures the baby’s correct posture which is vital for their correct development and allows them to nap comfortably when out and about with their mum or dad. Soft and padded newborn insert which is included with the bundle fits the seat perfectly and provides maximum comfort especially during the early stage of baby’s life. The hood also comes with a ventilation panel to ensure correct air circulation.

One of Venicci’s goals is to design prams which will make everyday life easier for parents. The Empire certainly does not disappoint there…the whole construction is easy to fold, light and compact. With one simple hand movement, Empire folds to the size of a compact suitcase. Moreover, the extendable handle allows you to carry it like one too! Due to its size it is perfect for storage, especially for those living in smaller flats but also for carrying it up and down the stairs due to the aluminum alloy frame which makes it lightweight.

Apart from how easy it folds, Venicci also considered making it easier for parents by allowing them to fold the pushchair when in a forward but also rear facing position, which is a very unique feature in these sorts of products.

Venicci Empire is ideal for those living in big cities due to its size. It makes it easy when hopping on and off the bus or when navigating around busy shopping centres, however it is also perfect for parents who live in more rural areas. Solid, gel wheels will eliminate the risk of punctures during country walks and 4-wheels suspension applied will ensure uneven terrain as well as more demanding terrains will not disturb baby’s peaceful sleep.  360° rotary front wheels also make the pushchair light and effortless to steer.

Elegant and classy design is another feature which distinguishes Venicci amongst others. The design team put a lot of time and effort to make sure each part of the pram is refined in every, even the smallest detail.

Empire is made from luxurious, high quality and durable fabrics which not only look fabulous but are also weather resistant. UV50 filter and water-repellent coating on the material means it will not deteriorate when exposed to sun or rain.

Embellishments in the form of Venicci’s logos and matching zips stand out beautifully and give Empire an even more deluxe look.

This bundle comes with a number of accessories which future parents will find useful such as a safe and tested I-Size car seat and base - perfect especially for those parents who drive. Adapters included enable the car seat to be attached onto the chassis. Rain cover - a true necessity especially for the unpredictable British weather. Pouch bag, an absolutely newness from Venicci, a replacement for a traditional changing bag and apron to keep the baby warm during windy days.

Venicci Empire is available in 3 colours: Ultra Black, Urban Grey and Silk Pink.

The 9 piece bundle will be available from April 2023. office@venicci.co.uk www.venicci.co.uk

retailer opinion

With the current cost of living crisis, do you feel that new parents are looking more at the cost of their chosen set of first wheels?

Customers will always have different budgets and expectations in mind. As a company we are seeing the demand for travel systems £1000 plus increasing. The Nuna NEXT Generation bundle with todl car seat is currently the top seller in our store. The quality is just so plain to see.

We are also seeing an increase in the more budget conscious parent. We have travel systems from just £89.99. So, we do try to offer something for every budget and have all budgets caterer for.

Are they looking more at features that might be offered when making their final selection?

We have seen an increase in parents looking to purchase the next stage car seat with their travel system. The Nuna mixx bundle and the Joie Calmi bundle are both extremely popular. I believe that this is for 2 reasons. Manufacturers are offering this option more and the consumer is looking for a package that will last longer and fulfil all of their 0-4 years needs. Thus offering greater value cost per use once they have made the initial outlay. This is a bundle that perhaps wasn’t as popular before the cost of living crisis.

Do you feel that this category has sufficient innovation?

I love wheeled goods!! I was a pramaholic when I had my 4 children. Sometimes having a new one every month!

I think this category is amazing and always evolving. The colours that are “in fashion” varies so much from year to year and it’s fantastic to see so many manufacturers coming away from grey. Customers have particularly loved the Upline in Stone Beige from Venicci, Joie Versatrax in Laurel and the Oyster 3 in Spearmint.

We are seeing more and more travel systems with carrycots suitable for overnight sleeping. This is a great selling feature for those who want to get maximum value for money and is a great added feature.

I’m loving the manufacturers use of magnets for aprons and buckles too - this makes a parents life so much easier!

How important are brand names to your customers?

We stock a wide variety of brands but are always looking to expand our range. We have always been known for being a budget store but times for Jolly Tots are changing. We want to show that we are able to cater for all customers with a variety of budgets. We feel that some customers come in with a brand in mind but usually for no other reason than a friend may have recommended it, or they have seen one out and about. If it’s not one we stock it’s our job to change their mind or at least show them alternatives. I would say 8/10 times this is usually a success. So in general I would say rather than brand importance it would depend on how much the customer has already made up their mind on what they would like. Some people liken buying a pushchair to buying a wedding dress and we want to help to make it just as special.

Are your customers looking for one hand fold as a standard feature?

I think the demand for one hand fold has decreased in the travel system market. Customers are more demanding of other features instead. They accept that this isn’t really possible with a travel system so prefer luxury, comfort and styling. However with a stroller is seems a MUST. Stroller or travel system the most requested extra is always the cup holder.  How important is the weight and size of products that fall into this category with your customers?

We are seeing customers opt for the larger travel systems in our store. For a newborn baby style, comfort and design seem to always outweigh the compact models. It’s a very different story when looking at strollers, they expect them lighter than air!

Are you currently experiencing any specific current or upcoming consumer trends within this category?

Vegan leather has been extremely popular in this category. The customers are loving the beige and green colourways. We are finding the customers still love the rose gold frames if that is on a stroller or travel system. The amazing new Red Kite Koko in Amber has literally flown off the shelf. It’s amazing and the fold just spectacular. Everyone loves a gravity fold stroller.

The demand for cabin friendly strollers is always increasing. Particularly popular once the holiday season starts. There is a great choice of colours and designs and we find that this market grows every year.

Nursery Today caught up with Jolly Tots Managing Director, Lorretta Owen to find out her views on the wheeled goods category.

Damon Marriott

HEAD OF PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT, JOIE

Do you feel that this category has sufficient innovation?

It’s a hard one to reinvent the wheel but with simple steps during the development process, innovation has led to many now sporting one hand folding and the clever use of soft goods to create extra storage. However, the real innovation will come with a price tag as electronic gadgets are added to this category.

Does lifestyle play an integral role in how a product is chosen?

The clever parent will think ahead to how they will be using their chosen wheels, ensuring that the size of the wheels, folded size, method of folding and additional accessories like carrycots and car cots or infant carriers are going to best match their lifestyle.

Is one hand fold now becoming a standard feature and one which is set to stay?

The one handed folding adaptation is certainly very popular and makes folding difficulties a thing of the past. It has received great feedback from consumers since we first launched our versatrax, so is high on the priority list for most new developments.

What about automatic fold features – do you feel that this might become a popular in future products?

Whilst this feature looks great on the shop floor for demonstration purposes it bears the same benefits as a one hand fold system, so where possible many will incorporate into design, but I wouldn’t personally say this will be a must have for many parents.

How important is the weight and size of products that fall into this category?

This really does depend on the lifestyle of the parents, for those who primarily walk from home it may not feature high on their list. However, for those that use the car or public transport frequently it may be one of the most important points. If it’s too heavy or too big and it is being used on a daily basis, it may become too impractical and will lead to a follow-on purchase of a lighter or more compact stroller/pushchair very quickly.

Holly Brewer MARKETING MANAGER, ERGOBABY UK

With the current cost of living crisis, do you feel that new parents are looking more at the cost of their chosen set of first wheels?

Price is always important to consumers but particularly in the current financial climate. Retailers who believe their customers are concerned with price points should ensure they offer their customers versatile, long-lasting strollers with all the features they need for long-term use. Are they looking more at features that might be offered when making their final selection? All consumers have different needs and requirements depending on their lifestyles. Comprehensive product training enables retailers to know which products will suit which customers and make personalised recommendations, which increase the likelihood of converting to purchase. Ergobaby offer a wide range of support including instore product training, instore POS, web kits that include social assets, blogs, instructional videos and more, to help you take your sales skills to the next level.

Is this a sector that is researched online prior to purchase and does Social Media play a pivotal role?

While many consumers will do the beginnings of their research online, there is still nothing that compares to physically seeing and pushing a pushchair or stroller in person. This can help parents and parents-to-be understand exactly how a product will fit in their everyday lives, and they rely on retailers’ experience to fill in any gaps in their knowledge. Retailers should offer a range of products and, with the right training, offer help and advice tailored to each family’s individual circumstances. Social media can turn a product into a must-have item and seeing a product in action via brand or retailer channels, or in ‘real life’ with a favoured influencer, can help persuade those considering a product to purchase. Is one hand fold now becoming a standard feature and one which is set to stay?

From the original Metro stroller launched in 2019, all the way through to the new Metro+ Deluxe, all Ergobaby strollers feature a one-hand fold, for the simple reason that it is a must-have feature for most parents.

How important is the weight and size of products that fall into this category?

Weight and size are important considerations from most customers as they can now expect all the features of a full-size stroller from a compact fold. For example, comfort features such as ergonomic padding, adjustable handlebars, large wheels, car seat compatibility and newborn capability that were previously the preserve of full-size strollers and travel systems are now all available in strollers small enough to fit in most airplane overhead bins.

As a leading brand name within this category, do you feel that there are any specific current or future trends that you would like to share with nursery retailers?

As the cost of living rises and lifestyles and priorities change, strollers that offer parents everything they could need in one place are becoming more and more popular. Some consumers can’t afford to buy twice and some simply don’t want to. They want all the convenience of a compact stroller while retaining the highest standard of functionality, safety and comfort.

Store expansion for Little Angels

Nottingham independent retailer owner triples the size of her multi-millionpound baby store – making it one of the biggest in the Midlands.

Kelly Carter, who owns the Little Angels superstore, in Prospect Street, Radford, Nottingham, is renting the premises next door – expanding her business from 5,000 sq ft to 15,000 sq ft.

The mum-of-two set herself a mammoth challenge – just eight weeks to have the store up and running on Friday, March 3rd – in time for her 35th birthday.

Kelly had lost her mum around the time of her 30th birthday and said she wanted to replace those sad memories with something more positive.

The move means Little Angels is adding three new members of staff – taking the total to eight shop staff and five employees at its Ilkestonbased warehouse.

Kelly, from Ilkeston, said the unit owner, who she used to share a car park with, asked if she wanted to take the premises off his hands, so she had a look inside.

“It’s an absolutely beautiful building – about 200 years old – and it’s got really stunning period windows and high ceilings,” said Kelly, who is married to Terry, 44, and is mum to Owen, nine, and 12-year-old Connor.

“I was filled with joy and horror at the same time – first of all, I could see its potential, but second of all, it was scary as hell because the roof needed repairing and the place needed gutting. It looked like an absolutely massive job.

“Everyone, including my husband and suppliers, who has seen the scale of the project, has been laughing at me and all have said it’s impossible to turn this around in eight weeks.

“But I’ll be the one having the last laugh.”

Seven weeks into the massive project, a determined Kelly – who hopes the shop will provide everything a parent could need – met her target with the extended store opening on time.

So far, she has been doing a lot of the renovation herself and spent all of her spare time shaping the unit into her vision.

The extended store will include a bespoke jogging track – for testing out jogging pushchairs.

“There’s a massive market for jogging and all terrain pushchairs at the moment and I could see a gap in the market locally,” explained Kelly.

This section named double trouble will feature a range of double pushchairs, all terrains and a graffiti wall displaying designs by Radford graffiti artist Kaption1, who created the images on the wall outside Little Angels.

Kelly also plans to hang vintage pushchairs, which she has bought from

an antique shop, from the ceiling and there will also be a selfie area, complete with a throne, and grandparents’ quotes emblazoning the walls.

She also has plans to add a cafe to the extension at some point. Other features of the store will include more car seats and a demo rig, breast-feeding area, customer toilets and for the first time, Kelly will be able to provide full nursery furniture sets, with 16 on display.

Kelly will also be able to increase the range of next 2 me cribs and extend the number of pushchairs on show.

Little Angels will be adding the Mee-go brand to its repertoire of stockists and will now have enough space to display all of the colours in each pushchair stocked – which Kelly believes is the only baby store in the Midlands to do so.

Little Angels’ extension launched with a five-day opening event, from March 3rd. The opening event featured lots of offers, fizz and cakes, along with drinks for pregnant customers.

An extremely busy Kelly joked that her plans beyond opening the in-store cafe “require rest for a good while”.

Red Kite Baby Rocks On…

Red Kite kick starts 2023 with lots of new and fabulous models to excite and delight.

Red Kite Baby has recently celebrated their 18th Birthday and throughout these years the brand has been synonymous with family, great service, and amazing value across a range of key essential nursery products. These values have never been more important to young families than today. As we all hear of the challenges for so many of us at the moment, ensuring they continue to be able to supply excellent quality at affordable price points is the foundation that Red Kite has always stood for.

Building on the fantastic response received from customers at the Harrogate Nursery Fair last October, Red Kite now have brand new product launches arriving much to the delight of customers who already pre order initial stock.

First to market was the introduction of the new compact stroller, the Push Me Koko. So popular that it has more or less sold out immediately due to the sleek lightweight chassis and is full of additional features. Easy to fold and a total joy to push around and looks the part as well! The well-proportioned seat is suitable from birth to larger children up to

22kgs and is finished with soft quilted fabrics for additional comfort. Fully reclinable for tired babies and fitted with a bumper bar, fully extendable hood with handy viewing section to check on baby. It is also supplied with an additional shoulder carry strap to give free hands when folded and a handy front apron to protect baby from any chilly weather as well as handy raincover. Compact to fold to fit into a small car boot all goes to explain why the new Push Me Koko has already been so popular and is shortlisted for Made for Mums Awards 2023.

Arriving shortly is another addition to the Push Me Stroller range with the brilliant new stroller the Push Me Quad. Again from birth to larger children up to 22kgs, this value stroller is built to be sturdy and practical. A large padded seat and all the standard features you get with a Red Kite stroller, bumper bar, raincover, easy fold, large hood with viewing panel, modern sleek chassis at an absolutely amazing value.

One of the categories Red Kite is probably best recognized for is their range of baby walkers and entertainers all aptly titled Baby Go Round. They continue to be market leaders in this category with the entry level electronic Baby Go Round Jive Walkers available in two designs and very much in demand. Their mid-range models include the Baby Go Round Race and the brilliant Baby Go Round Twist & Walk. A 3 in 1 model that is both a walker, rocker and push along with added independent toys as a bonus. Adding to this colourful range is the new Baby Go Round Entertainer. A static 360 entertainer jam packed with fun activities including the unique jump pad. Great when you want baby to be

entertained and stimulated but maybe prefer to keep them in one place!

Sleep time is such a precious time of the day and Red Kite have always supplied their award winning travel cot the Sleeptight which is now an everyday staple in many households. Building on the success of this range they added a travel version of a co-sleeper crib , the Dreamer Bedside Crib which yet again demonstrates the detail and thought Red Kite put into developing practical products that parents demand. The Una Co-sleeper has also been a welcome addition to the range in the past year with its stylish design and many features including handy storage. Recommended by parents as a fabulous and practical solution to have baby safely sleeping close by. Due to the success of the Una , Red Kite are introducing a brand new Co sleeper, the Cozysleep. All the features and functions you would expect from a Co-sleeper crib but at a stunning price point.

This is just a snap shot of some of the amazing products and ranges that Red Kite supply. Their customer base has increased of late as value becomes more and more important to families. They continue to have great personal relationships with the independent sector in particular and appreciate the feedback and support they receive.

Hello everyone, I hope you are all well and feeling positive during these trying times. I don’t like to be a negative nelly so I’ll be trying to stay upbeat over the next few weeks and months whilst this retail slump bites hard in to our industry.

I’ve had a fair few conversations with many of you and it would appear that the consumers have universally decided to abandon us. Some parents to be are still out there shopping and spending but the entire sector is showing signs that the “cost of living crisis” is starting to make people think twice before they part with their hard earned cash. It makes our jobs harder as we have to ensure we are attracting everyone we can to our stores.

During these times it is vitally important to promote your store and not just keep pushing your stock. Don’t forget the purpose of your social media posts are to raise awareness of what you sell but you need to ensure the consumer understands you are the best place to buy it from. Social media posts that forget this fact will only benefit the market in general and you’ll spend all your time on content with lots of likes and shares – and

you’ll have zero sales to show for it. I’ve said it time and time again the best and most important product you sell is you, your team and your store! If consumers see you promoting yourselves in an appropriate manner, they will respond by visiting you and once they are in your store you have every chance to make a sale. Never lose sight of the simple fact that if they are expecting a bundle of joy they will eventually have to buy something. We just need to make sure they spend that money in our stores.

My philosophical paragraph of the month relates to this very subject. Yes, people I am about to go all Yoda

on you! When you’ve had a bad week or month just remember that all retail is a series of ups and downs. If this month was a down don’t lose heart, next month should be an up. On the flip side don’t fear an up month. . .it doesn’t always mean a down month will follow. Just take the positives from this month and apply them to the new month –even if business takes a downturn remember it won’t stay there.

As I’m typing this the industry is all set to see the return of nursery shows and many of you are commenting online how you know this will affect you over the duration of the show.

Pramland’s John Barker is looking at consumer spending, utilising social media and trends that have emerged in general when we look at colourways for 2023.

Wheels are where the bulk of our business and they sell consistently regardless of economic conditions. No doubt as we head in to 2023 further they will continue to sell and thanks to lots of new fabrics and product updates across the shopfloor it’s easy to see why.

Likewise, some of you have been saying how you’ll be tackling this and it’s an inspiration to read some of your fantastic ideas on overcoming the issues these shows create. We are fairly lucky here in Hull as our closest show is in Manchester but I sympathise with each and everyone of you that has one on your doorstep.

We, like so many of you class wheels as our number one line, with car seats and nursery interiors some way behind (especially in the current climate). Ok, so 99% of the prams you sell will have an associated car seat sale but nursery interiors seem to be getting hit worse than other categories for us. Customers are happily moving to two piece sets instead of the usual three pieces.

We are finding that as parents to be are wanting to spend less they are

doing so in a way that means they still get the pram of their dreams, ready for their Instagram posts. As no one sees the nursery, they seem to be happy to either take only the cotbed and dresser or drop to a basic range. I digress, wheels are where the bulk of our business and they sell consistently regardless of economic conditions. No doubt as we head in to 2023 further they will continue to sell and thanks to lots of new fabrics and product updates across the shopfloor it’s easy to see why. Best sellers like the Oyster 3 have seen a huge influx of new colours for the year. The Oyster 3 has been our best seller for so many years it’s hard to imagine a weekend without an order for one being taken. Likewise, some of the new Egg 3 colours such as Seagrass and Mink have been

tremendously popular. It’s great to finally have Bugaboo Fox back available to us all too. It’s been a frustrating few months but now the Fox 5 is finally here we can push in to 2023 with my personal Number One choice. . . .I’ve missed you Bugaboo Fox! Another new colourway that’s made big waves since it arrived is the new Ocarro Nocturn. Parents are loving this and it’s definitely the stand out in the Ocarro range this season.

One thing that has been subtly changing over the new year, and as our display has started to update over the past month or so is the colour range. This time last year everything was grey. This year it’s a sea of natural tones and neutral colours. It’s a welcome change and one that the costumer is fully embracing. Beiges and greens are definitely the order of the day for 2023 and I for one won’t be sorry to say good bye to all the greys. Don’t get me wrong grey will never be out of fashion, I just think most parents to be are getting a little bored of it now. Never fear, it will no doubt be back soon enough once the naturals fad has passed.

Before I leave you for another month, I would just like to mention Cybex. Last month I was one of the lucky few to visit Cybex over in Germany and I have to say they looked

after us like royalty – so a huge THANK YOU to the entire Cybex team. From the moment we arrived at the airport you guys looked after us so well, I was blown away. The new ranges, colours and product updates impressed and I think I can speak for the entire industry when I say we all look forward to another great year trading with you!

From the moment baby is born, it can be a struggle to find good toys to keep them amused and provide stimulus as they grow and want to explore their surroundings. Traditional toys have huge consumer appeal as these often give parents a sense of nostalgia and easily catch their attention while forming a decision on what to buy.

Often these either have an instantly recognisable character from their own childhood or made from wood giving a more traditional feel to the product.

Toys in this sector come in a variety of forms, whether it be an item that provides stimulation to the infant, an educational aspect or of course a toy that will be treasured for years to come.

Early stage toys or motivators in this sector tend to be driven by developmental milestones and often have educational aspects to assist in developing an array of motor skills.

Good ranges stand the test of time and also provide colours that babies find easy to identify and engage with - plus for baby toys, walkers and motivators that provide entertainment in the form of squeakers, bells and lights are kept in line with consumer trends! Fuss-free bottles, around the clock

We know that when their baby is hungry, parents need a bottle feed fast, especially in the night!

With the Perfect Prep™ Day & Night machine from Tommee Tippee there’s no more waiting for the kettle to boil and then watching the clock while the water cools down to just the right temperature. Perfect Prep™ does all the hard work for you!

A true dream machine, the Perfect Prep™ Day & Night gives tired parents (and hungry little ones) a fresh formula feed at body temperature in just two minutes – that’s ten times faster than using a kettle! Plus, using a Perfect Prep™ machine to make a bottle feed uses significantly less electricity (and time) when compared to using a kettle*.

Because we’re always trying to make the lives of mums and dads a little easier, there’s no need to use bottled or filtered water when making a bottle feed using Perfect Prep™. That’s because our antibacterial filter removes bacteria, impurities, and other contaminants that can sometimes be found in water, and makes sure that it’s clean and safe, just like boiled water from a kettle.

From the outside, the included antibacterial filter may look a lot like other water filters, but other filters don’t always contain an internal antibacterial membrane, and that’s what makes the difference. When tested against other competitor water filters, the Tommee Tippee filter produced the cleanest and clearest results.

Available in three colours (slate, grey, or starbeam) and designed for 24/7 use, our Day & Night model has a clear digital display, and clever sleep-friendly features like adjustable volume control, bottle stand

Best friend for night-time feeds

Here’s how the Perfect Prep™ Day & Night works...

Step 1

Use the display to select the desired feed size. The Perfect Prep™ Day & Night can make feeds ranging from 4fl oz to 11fl oz.

Step 2

Add the correct amount of powdered formula milk to the bottle. The Perfect Prep™ Day & Night can prepare any brand of baby formula.

Step 3

Place the bottle on the base. This stand is adjustable to suit bottles in different shapes and sizes.

Step 4

ress the power button to release an initial hot-shot of water into the bottle. This 70°C hot-shot kills bacteria that may be present in your formula and helps to dissolve the powder.

Step 5

Add a milk lid to the bottle and shake well.

Step 6

Place the bottle back on the stand and press the power button again to dispense the remaining water at a cooler temperature.

Step 7

Feed your baby a perfectly prepared, fresh bottle at body temperature.

The most breastlike teat, ever.

Tommee Tippee Baby Bottles: Closer to Nature & Advanced Anti-Colic

Voted mums’ number one bottle for switching between breastfeeding and bottle feeding*, Tommee Tippee baby bottles are shaped like a breast so that little ones get the best, most comfortable latch possible.

The original breast-like bottles, our Closer to Nature bottles have soft silicone teats that feel closer to skin and flex and stretch just like a real nipple, meaning switching between breast and bottle feeding and back again has never been simpler!

Each award-winning** bottle comes with a Closer to Nature teat that has a sensitive inbuilt anti-colic valve that helps to reduce excessive airflow. This means that little ones ingest less air as they feed, and therefore helps to prevent the symptoms of colic.

To help mums and dads who worry about colic, we also include clever anti-colic technology that draws air out of baby’s milk and away from their tummy in the design of our Advanced Anti-Colic baby bottles. When asked, 84% of mums agreed that our Advanced Anti-Colic bottles successfully reduced their baby’s colic symptoms*. Less wind, reflux, and discomfort!

*Based on a 2021 study of 524 parents who use Tommee Tippee bottles.

As a customer-focused retailer, we are constantly striving to meet the evolving needs of everyone who buys from Online4baby. Whilst there are early signs of inflation beginning to slow, we know our customers are continuing to struggle with the cost of living. Our roadmap for the next few months is therefore focused on building on and improving our customer service proposition.

Online4baby’s Managing Director, Christy Foster gives an insight into their strategy for the next few months while consumers continue

One of the major initiatives we are currently undertaking is a significant investment in our development capabilities. We recognize that the online shopping experience is critical to our customers, and we want to ensure that we

are providing the most user-friendly website possible.

We have therefore invested in growing our tech capabilities in-house and are pleased to welcome Lee Chadwick as CTO and Michael Chadwick as Tech Lead.

Lee has a background in the technology industry, with a focus on pure-play e-commerce development.

Over the past 15 years, Lee has worked in various industries, ranging from large appliances to beauty. For the last 8 years, Lee has been a digital transformation leader, driving the digital revolutions for some of the UK’s largest e-commerce retailers.

Michael is an experienced Engineering Leader with a strong background in Front End Development and E-commerce. He has worked for several companies in various leadership roles, managing multiple software delivery teams and technical communities of practice. Michael is excited to work with a successful and ambitious brand over the next three months, revamping the user experience and re-platforming the website to a cutting-edge tech stack.

In the next 3 months, Lee and Michael will be leading our migration to full-cloud, designing a modern, scalable

e-commerce platform that can meet the needs of today’s on-demand market. By doing so, this will enable the company to react to the market with greater pace and agility and solve customer problems with technology. This transformation is expected to drive the company forward by providing a more efficient and effective way to do business, as well as better serve the needs of customers.

Our transformation will unlock several commercial and technical opportunities, driving O4B’s growth and expansion in 2023 and beyond. The new web platform will provide a lightning-fast, beautifully designed user experience that they can iterate at pace. This will give O4B a competitive edge in the market and enable us to leverage and integrate new technologies to further our success.

Bringing tech in-house will also support O4B’s cultural transition to a digital-first tech organization, laying the foundation for building out a highly capable digital team. Lee and Michael are both thrilled to work with passionate and dedicated individuals who have a strong appetite for embracing technology and growing the brand to become a household name in the UK and beyond. We can’t wait to see them both help take the Online4baby website to the next level.

Safe for sleep

Sleep is probably one of the most important things (aside from eating) that a baby does, however this is also an area that can create huge anxieties for many parents which is perhaps why we experience a great uptake on all related products from bedside cribs, Moses baskets, cots/cotbeds, mattresses, monitors through to bedding.

Bedside cribs have seen a huge uptake in interest and is a continual growing category with many brands now embracing this as a staple within their product ranges. This is perhaps one of the largest innovation sectors seen over the years within sleeptime solutions and one that hasn’t stood still, with many great new product launches to satisfy the growing consumer demand.

Social media has definitely enabled this product category to evolve and draw awareness not only in assisting driving the message about the dangers of co-sleeping but has highlighted the benefits that bedside cribs offer.

Alongside the brands iconic and original SnüzPod⁴, which remains to this day the UK’s bestselling bedside crib, Snüz has created an award-winning collection of products including, iconic cot beds and furniture, stylish bedding and sleeping bags, innovative mattresses and super cute sleep accessories, for new families. More recently, the brand has created SnüzCurve, an expertly designed pregnancy pillow to support mums-to-be to get the best sleep possible.

Mattresses are a another area which have seen changes over the years and have kept inline with consumer trends, with more brands recognising the need to address the type of materials used with ‘breathability’ and ‘anti allergy’ properties being perhaps at the core of R&D.

With consumer magazines and online publications/advice websites regularly publishing articles on safer sleeping and lists of ‘do’s and don’ts’ when it comes to sleeptime, this gives information hungry parents a higher level of information and brand awareness.

Stylish Sleep Solutions from CuddleCo

Rafi has sleep time sorted from birth until the age of five, developed to accompany babies through their early years. This CuddleCo cot bed adjusts to keep up with their growth and development.

Once baby has outgrown the lowest mattress position, Rafi can easily be converted to a day bed that’s stylish enough to live beyond the nursery. Rafi’s two-tone colour palette combines warm, natural oak tones and a black painted finish, making it a must-have for nurseries to first bedrooms. sales@cuddleco.co.uk

According to The Brainy Insights, the baby care products market is growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.6% from 2022-2030. The market is majorly driven by health-conscious parents that are seeking products that are cruelty-free, gluten-free, vegan and have botanical ingredients such as calendula extracts, chamomile, rosemary, aloe vera extracts, coconut oils, olive oils, shea butter, vegetable glycerine.

An increasing number of affluent millennial parents are seeking premium and specialised baby skincare and haircare products. According to Maxime Fougere, the global beauty marketing manager at Lubrizol Life Science, who examines suitable ingredients and future trends for baby care products, premium natural ingredients, and fragrance-free & antibacterial claims were the most important factors sought by parents before purchasing personal care products for babies and children in 2021.

Brands with a natural approach to baby care products appealed more in the year 2021 and are likely to grow. The most purchased categories were shampoo, nappy cream, oils, and sun care products. Further, sustainability, nature, efficacy, and safety were the megatrends among parents. As per industry experts, baby care products that are organic, vegan and biodegradable have become popular. Organic & natural products are preferred more by parents and they are not reluctant to pay a premium price for the safety of their children.

Experts Want a Ban on Infant Formula Marketing

Infant formula companies have ‘pathologised’ normal baby behaviour to promote their products, and there should be ‘an international, legal treaty’ to prevent their marketing, according to health experts. In addition, political lobbying by milk formula companies to influence public policy should be sharply curtailed.

These are some of the suggestions contained in a  hree-part series published in The Lancet in February 2023:

Fewer than half of all babies are breastfed as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), as formula milk companies “exploit parents’ emotions and manipulate scientific information to generate sales at the expense of the health and rights of families, women, and children,” argue the authors.

“The sale of commercial milk formula is a multi-billion-dollar industry which uses political lobbying alongside a sophisticated and highly effective marketing playbook to turn the care and concern of parents and caregivers into a business opportunity. It is time for this to end,” says series co-author, Professor Nigel Rollins from WHO’s Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health.

The series exposes how the commercial milk formula (CMF) industry portrays normal baby behaviour –  including crying, fussiness, vomiting and poor night-time sleep – as ‘pathological’ problems. They “exploit mothers’ insecurities about their milk and their ability to satisfy and calm their baby” – and offer CMF as a solution, adds the series. The damning exposé comes over 40 years after the World Health Assembly adopted the voluntary International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes in 1981 to reign in the infant formula industry – which has been powerless to stop marketing manipulation. In fact, sales of milk formula grew 37-fold between 1978 and 2019 – from $1∙5 billion to $55∙6 billion annually.
