Makkah receives more than 15 million Muslim visitors each year to experience the annual religious Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah, the holiest city in the religion of Islam. LEO A DALY’s design respects the Muslim faith and culture by taking into account the need for guests to use all facilities on the same schedule. Visitors’ prayer schedules indicate that all restaurants should anticipate one large meal, rather than several small ones. The design team provided large spaces totaling more than 700 seats in a sophisticated, contemporary style that also incorporated stylized traditional motifs. The design highlights local craftsmanship through the use of a traditional Arabic pattern sized to scale to create dramatic statements in backlit screens, etched floor patterns and an enveloping trellis that greets the guests upon entry. The hotel’s grand scale lobbies house large numbers of guests traveling through at one time. These large, open spaces provide ample seating areas, coffee lounges and additional amenities for travellers. As part of a broader project team, LEO A DALY was commissioned to develop a set of design guidelines for the external aspects of new, renovated and converted hospital projects throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. LEO A DALY’s scope includes master planning and façade design, with others responsible for landscaping and engineering services. Developed in conjunction with the Ministry of Health, the master planning section initially outlines the involved stakeholders, process and neccesary outcomes of a hospital master plan before discussing critical factors, such as site selection, cultural and climatic considerations. The specifics of site organization, massing and function relevant to several categories of potential site provide the criteria for architects to follow in developing design for any site considered by the Ministry of Health for new hospital projects or the conversion or renovation of existing facilities. The façade design section was also developed with the Ministry of Health to incorporate their brand image, while still being able to respond to local climate and culture and functionally serving the internal healthcare program.

Owner SABIC Size 26,897 SF (2,497 SM) Scope Design competition
The Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) set a vision to commission a Landmark Masjid in the commemoration of Dr. Ghazi Al Gosaibi, the first Chairman of SABIC. The plot of land had been allotted by the Royal Commission of Mardoumah District in Jubail’s future city center and is part of a larger development district targeted to serve the Jubail area. The design was to accomodate 1,000 worshippers and achieve a LEED Silver rating. Through the Concept Design process, LEO A DALY recognized Dr. Ghazi al Gosaibi’s rooted origins from Saudi Arabia’s eastern province, and drove the architectural design through a modern interpretation of the vernacular design elements. The primary architectural elements used included: Arcade, Screens and Mushrabiyas, Courtyards and Intrinsic Islamic Patterns. The overall form is composed of two volumes, a prayer hall and a support facility. Internal space carvings in the form of courtyards add to the project’s sustainability goals and objectives in creating outdoor prayer areas, reducing cooling loads, increasing daylight and improving ventilation in areas like the ablution. At times when the mosque reaches a high occupancy, the courtyards will be used to promote flexibility and adaptation in the mosque design.

This project combines a world-class medical and wellness tourism resort with the unique warmth and welcome of traditional Omani hospitality. The goal of the Medical Village is to generate a niche sector for new high-end medical tourism to Oman as well as capture some of the current market for high net worth Omanis traveling abroad for medical treatment, care and rehabilitation. Rather than offer a particular level of acuity, Medical Village has zones covering a range of offerings, from resort-style accommodation complemented by spa and wellness offerings, to surgical inpatient facilities and long-term palliative care. The first of its kind in the region, Medical Village offers a one-stop-shop for medical tourism. Conserving the cultural environment is important when it comes to maintaining the sense of place that brings visitors to a destination such as Oman. The decision to adopt predominantly Omani architectural themes is both an aesthetic and an environmental decision, intended to be considerate of both the traditions of the local community and travelers who come to Oman to experience another culture. As cities become bigger and life becomes busier and sometimes more difficult, people are looking for refuges. Resorts have to provide this. As an important part of the escape, tourists want to experience the local ethos. Both the natural and the cultural environments, of course, are elements of this.

The two-story architecture is characterized by cast-in-place concrete walls with a textured finish. Design considerations throughout include accommodations for high humidity, salinity, sand and wind as they affect the facility and specialized equipment used in marine research. A distinctive pump system distributes sea water from the Gulf to the various laboratories supporting sea life under observation and experimentation. A boat yard and marina area adjoin and extend from the building with adequate space and access considerations for research boats and submarines. Owner UAE Armed Forces General Headquarters Command of Military Works Size 1,332,744 SF (123,816 SM) Scope Condition assessment, site selection studies, feasibility study, full programming, planning, architecture and engineering design services
LEO A DALY was contracted by the Command of Military Works, United Arab Emirates Armed Forces, to provide full programming, planning and design services to replace the current Zayed Military Hospital in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The new military hospital will be constructed at Zayed Military City and will serve as the military’s premier hospital, providing centers of excellence in cardiology, trauma and burn care. The hospital will contain all medical and surgical subspecialties and will serve as a nursing and physician teaching facility. The hospital will provide 300 single-patient bedrooms that can expand to double-patient bedrooms during national emergencies. During the concept design phase, LEO A DALY conducted interviews with all major departments, organized and prioritized their needs, and integrated them into a program. This program was used to develop six master plans which were reviewed by the UAE military authorities, ultimately identifying three master plans which were fully developed into concept design-level detail, including renderings and department-level block planning. Each master plan followed poetic concepts from the region: Char Bagh, Constellation and Wadi. The Wadi concept was selected by the client as the best concept design, hailed as “absolutely beautiful” by the CMW Commander. The design will incorporate the latest in international healthcare design and evidence-based design practices in order to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction and staff efficiency.

Abu Dhabi Special Needs Club Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Owner Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care & Special Needs Size 330,000 SF (30,550 SM) Scope Concept design
The Abu Dhabi Club for persons with special needs creates a campus where the stadium and multipurpose building play a prominent role on the site and in the lives of the athletes. With the field recessed into the earth, the canted walls surrounding the field submit to the power of the exposed structural trusses, cantilevered forms and the expressive roof system of the multipurpose building. Access to the field for the athletes is below grade while spectators access the seating from grade level. This horizontal separation helps with supporting services, views and both spectator and athlete safety. The transparent forms of the multipurpose building, along with other surrounding buildings, showcase the activities taking place within, while connecting the athletes to the site and other sporting events. These transparent forms and dramatic architectural maneuvers give inspiration to the athletes to interact with the campus and other athletes and encourage mobility. This desire to encourage movement is reinforced in the landscape by the placement of two large bands of varying hardscape and softscape patterns that extend across the campus, unifying various activities and buildings. This pattern creates an outdoor rug that unifies buildings and creates outdoor programmed spaces. To further emphasize movement, the bands are shifted off the 10 meter grid of the site to provoke competition between the landscape plan and the architectural grid, giving the athlete or visitor a cerebral or subconscious experience of movement.

Karbala Teaching Hospital Karbala, Iraq

LEO A DALY
Prominently placed along the pilgrimage route into this holy city, this new, modern hospital is a strong unifying element for Karbala, bridging old and new, history and legend. The form of the most visible part of the hospital building is homage to Imam Hussein and his brother, Al-Abbas. The two forms which make up the tower are separated by a deep, wide reveal. The taller component represents Al-Hussein ibn Ali and the lower one represents his brother. The unification of the two is embodied in the Day of Ashura and the pilgrimage to the holy shrines pilgrims visit, separate but both important. The modern language of the architecture is important as it represents the most current medical practice and technology available, a true twenty-first century facility, which is not only about caring for people but teaching medical professionals in the region how to best do so. Punctuating the modernity is a layer of historical references, large indigenous stone columns representing the strength of Karbala and etched with an Arabesque figuring borrowed from the Masjid al-Hussein. As pilgrims as well as hospital patients, family members, visitors and staff of all levels pass by these columns, they are reminded of the significance of the past history and how it has made this facility possible.
