Sophisticated Eclecticism — In today’s digital world the viewer is bombarded by images of inviting living room spaces, beautiful abodes and exotic estates where the inspiration to design and re-design your own space is never-ending. Often these images are digital renderings which never existed in the first place and they’re filled with soothing silhouettes, soft curves and fanciful palettes, however they can also feel somewhat sterile. How do you create a sense of individuality and warmth that speaks to the designer and the collector alike? Traditional design has re-entered the spotlight as more people look for comfort in the familiar and this has led to contemporary collectors looking for ways to combine the old with the new. In The Collector’s Auction on 22 June in Sydney we look at eclectic collecting and ways to celebrate the unexpected by pairing the antique with the modern. Starting with a love story in China in 1956, the Estate of Professor Bill and Ngaere Geddes opens with a fascinating trove of treasures collected during their years together travelling and working throughout Asia and Australia. Lots such as the Thai bronze buddha heads (lot 1 and 4), the “bencharong” bowls (lot 7 and 8), and the Chinese blue and white charger (lot 39) look beautiful as a collection but also make for standout pieces, whether displayed in a cabinet or as a centrepiece on a sleek dining room table. Our travel through time and space continues with the other properties in the auction which provide an opportunity to find that key focal point for your collection, such as a beautifully inlaid Davenport with olivewood, ebony and mother of pearl (lot 69), a Roman marble head (lot 81 and 82), or a stunning French ormolu chariot clock (lot 121). As the catalogue transitions through to more contemporary art such as Francis Bacon’s Three Studies for a Self-Portrait (lot 179) and modern furnishings such as the sheepskin covered armchairs attributed to Flemming Lassen (lot 196), we approach the collection of the master of “new-old” himself, Thomas Hamel (lots 199–214). An American-born and internationally recognised interior designer who is at the helm of celebrated Sydney-based design firm, Thomas Hamel & Associates, Thomas’ design ethos perfectly encapsulates what the Collector’s Auction in June is all about; a cross-pollination of timeless, international styles edited with sophistication and good taste. F R O M T H E E S TAT E O F P R O F E S S O R B I L L & N G A E R E G E D D E S LOTS 1–47

Born on 29 April 1916 in New Plymouth, New Zealand, Bill Geddes graduated from Otago University B.A (1938), M.A in Philosophy and Psychology (1939), completing his PhD in Anthropology at the LSE in 1948. Ngaere TePunga was born on 8 November 1928 in Halcombe, New Zealand. She graduated from a Teachers Training College in Wellington and held various teaching posts in New Zealand and Australia. In 1956, the President of the Chinese Cultural Association invited 5 or 6 well known social and cultural figures of New Zealand for a one-month tour of China as guests of the Association. The New Zealand delegation comprised artists (a sculptor and a painter), a farmer, a Presbyterian Minister, a Museum Director, Historian, an anthropologist and a primary school teacher. Ngaere together with her host and Bill behind her in the New Zealand delegation visiting Beijing in 1956.

The anthropologist on the delegation, Dr William R Geddes, and the primary school teacher, Ngaere Te Punga, fell in love during the Tour. Two years later in 1959, Bill was offered the position of Professor of Anthropology at Sydney University and was later joined by Ngaere. They married in 1963 in Sydney and undertook extensive travel and field work throughout the Pacific and South East Asia. They lived and worked in Thailand, Fiji, Borneo, Bali, & India from the late 1950s to the mid-1980s. While visiting Peking (Beijing) in 1956, Geddes contacted Fei Hsiao-tung, a Chinese anthropologist who had written Peasant Life in China (1939), a study of a village on the Yangtze plain. Fei Hsiao-tung helped to negotiate a visit enabling Geddes to write a sequel, Peasant Life in Communist China (1963) Between 1957 and 1962 Bill & Ngaere Geddes travelled and intermittently lived and worked among the ethnic minorities of northern Thailand, highlanders at the margins of the Golden Triangle. In 1964-65 he was an adviser to the Tribal Research Centre set up in Chiang Mai by the Thai government. The result is his major monograph, Migrants of the Mountains: The Cultural Ecology of the Blue Miao (Hmong Njua) of Thailand (1976). Bill and Ngaere shared a love for the arts, material culture and ceramics. Over time they amassed an interesting collection. Many of the pieces on display were acquired in Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Borneo and Sydney. Geddes was a skilled and sensitive still photographer and taught himself the medium of 16 mm film. James Bertram’s book Return to China (1957) makes extensive use of his photographs. His first film in the late 1950s was the Miao, of which the BBC produced a thirty-minute version, The Opium People, with commentary by David Attenborough. In 1961 he filmed The Land Dayaks of Borneo (1966), and then Miao Year (1968). He attached importance to film as a record of fast-disappearing ways of life, using descriptive documentary to complement written accounts. Throughout his life whether teaching, writing or filming, Bill Geddes worked to promote cross-cultural perspectives and understanding in the social sciences and tolerance in social life. He edited and published Asian Perspectives in Social Science (1985), his last published work. Both Bill and Ngaere formed life-long associations with artists. As for devotion to their collection of ceramics two divergent anecdotes should suffice. One concerns frequent visits to admire the Ming Charger displayed in an antique dealer’s shop in Chiang Mai, acquired after it disappeared from the window with savings frugally accumulated over time. The other concerns the charger being used as an oversized ash-tray until someone alerted Ngaere to its value. Take your pick. Now to be dispersed, the collection was evidently a mutual labour of dedication and love. Nescha Teckle, May 9 2021

Originally part of the contents of Schloss St Emmeram in Regensburg, Germany, (an opulent palace that was one of the seats of the Princely Thurn und Taxis family), these commodes were sold in the massive Sotheby’s auction of the collection in 1993. Between the sale date and their re-appearance on the market in London in the early 2000s they underwent an “ extreme makeover” that transformed them from a polite pair of Viennese cabinets to a knockout pair of “Russian” commodes a vantaux, that is with doors hiding the three long drawers within. Richly mounted with ormolu stars and mouldings in the manner of the celebrated maker Heinrich Gambs they were sold to a noted Australian collector for

a purported six figure pounds sterling amount. Resurfacing in the Owston Collection auction in Sydney in 2010 where they were acquired by the current vendor, the Thurn und Taxis collection stamp was discovered and the mystery was unravelled.

James Alfred Turner (1850–1908) was an Englishborn artist who devoted his career to depicting rural life in Australia in painstaking detail. Often featuring the mountain ranges to the north and east of Melbourne where he resided, his paintings tell stories of pioneers battling the rugged Australian bush and their daily pursuits. Logger, Wagon and Bullock Team is expertly proportioned with a single rising mountain and partially cloudy sky centring the background which lends the painting an atmospheric quality akin to a crisp, fresh autumn morning in the Dandenong Ranges. The settlement in the middleground of the painting shows vivid signs of life with two horses out to graze and a small figure to the far right possibly out the back of their house chopping wood. The wagon and bullock team feature in the very centre of the composition following a winding road which leads the viewers eye to the foreground where we find our logger walking along a bridge, axe slung over his shoulder.

This painting is a beautiful rendering of daily life in 19th century Australia, one which is typical of Turner's great skill, eye and style. His obituary in The Argus Melbourne on 16 April 1908 read in part "Victoria loses an artist who not only understood and appreciated the beauty of the bush, but could depict faithfully its life and character."

161 HANS HEYSEN (1877–1968) Storm Clouds Over the Flinders c. 1930 charcoal and chalk on paper signed lower right: HANS HEYSEN 38.5 × 54cm PROVENANCE: Deutscher-Menzies, 8 September 2004, lot 194 (label verso) EXHIBITIONS: "Hans Heysen Retrospective Exhibition 1901–1965", The Adelaide Festival of Arts, 1966, catalogue no. 110 (label verso) LITERATURE: David Driden, The Art of Hans Heysen, 1966, plate 72 $7,000–10,000

One of Australia’s most celebrated artists, Sir Hans Heysen is best known for his depictions of towering gum trees and grandly romanticised portrayals of the Australian landscape. His works resonate so deeply with the Australian public that they won him the Wynne Prize for landscape painting a record nine times and have made him a household name nationwide. The present work is a fine example of Heysen’s masterful draughtsmanship and his sensitivity to nature’s sublime form. Without the use of the full colour palette, Heysen is ever more sensitive to the subtle gradations of light and shadow at the moment a storm looms on the horizon of a sweeping mountain range. The deftness of his hand is apparent, as if he were attempting to capture as much likeness of the landscape as possible before retreating from the impending downpour.

From 1926 to 1933 Heysen’s typical serene and majestic gumtree scenes with the odd drover and cow transitioned into depictions of the rugged landscape of the Flinders Ranges. The series of artworks that he produced during his 11 trips there from his colonial home, The Cedars, just outside Hahndorf SA, comprise a distinct group within his entire body of work. The present lot demonstrates his preoccupation with this newfound landscape. Other charcoal works from this period featuring the Flinders Ranges are owned by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia.

Intentionally drawing inspiration from international artists such as Matisse, Miro, Mondrian, Picasso and Rothko, Coburn developed his distinctive style early in his career and remained dedicated to it throughout. In 1969 he described it as "a flat-patterned style of painting, using brilliant colour combinations based on natural or organic images".1

Carnival of Birds is a quintessential Coburn composition featuring immediately recognisable shapes in bright, rich colours. The abstracted birds feature a single eye as though viewed in profile flying through the hot Australian summer sky. The title is celebratory and fantastical, one could almost be forgiven for believing the collective noun of these magical birds to be a carnival. Coburn is one of Australia's foremost abstract artists and his works are housed in state and regional galleries across Australia as well as at Rome's Vatican Museum and Vienna's Graphische Sammlung Albertina. – 1. Francis Bacon is one of the most significant painters of the modern age; a self-taught artist, his paintings are renowned for their raw and unsettling imagery, merging figurative portraiture with abstracted settings. Three Studies for a SelfPortrait is a three-plate lithograph printed on one sheet, after his painting of the same title from 1983 currently housed at the Honolulu Museum of Art. In this self-portrait Bacon confronts the “brutality of fact” in his own visage as it emerges, ghostlike, from the surrounding darkness.1 He proceeds to drag a cloth or dry brush through the wet paint to blur and abstract the details. These swirling distortions convey a sense of movement and emphasise the passage of time evoked by the triptych format. Bacon was first inspired by the arts after visiting an exhibition of Picasso’s drawings at the Galerie Paul Rosenberg in 1927, this led him to first try his hand at interior design before finding painting following the influence of Australian artist Roy de Maistre. De Maistre has been described as Bacon’s most significant artistic contact in the 1930s, and Bacon’s works from this period closely echo the cubist and surrealist forms, and at times also the colour palette, found in de Maistre’s work.2 Initially experiencing only brief success as an artist, Bacon’s early efforts failed to establish a unique style of his own separate to what he had already absorbed. As a result, he experienced a period of frustration and subsequent artistic hiatus between 1937 and 1943. However, in 1944 Bacon found new inspiration and began working on the paintings he came to consider as the beginning of his career, first with the triptych Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion (housed

at the Tate, London). From this point onwards he began to forge the legacy by which the world now remembers him. Bacon painted Three Studies for a Self-Portrait at the height of his global recognition and at a time when he was preoccupied with reflections on mortality and the temporality of man’s existence. Following the death of his former lover George Dyer, just prior to the opening of his retrospective at the Grand Palais in Paris in 1971, Bacon became almost obsessively occupied with self-portraiture. He stated “I loathe my own face but I go on painting it only because I haven't got any other people to do.”3 By 1983, his presence on the canvas had transitioned from rage and grief to resignation and acceptance of the world’s hard truths. As a result his self-portraits from this time, the current lot included, with his face emerging from a deep abyss tightly constricted within the confines of the canvas, imbue the sitter with a deep sense of introspection. – 1. His artwork is immediately recognisable through the use of unconventional materials to produce rough, abstracted surfaces which evoke a sense of struggle and endurance. Heavily influenced by the work of Spanish artist Antoni Tapies, Lynn maintained his interest in texture and surface throughout his career, later experimenting with assemblage elements that

echoed the work of some of the Dada artists he'd seen in Europe. In addition to his considerable achievements as a painter he was also esteemed in academic circles through his curatorship of the Power Gallery of Contemporary Art at Sydney University (1969–1983, now housed within the Museum of Contemporary Art) and his writing as art critic for The Australian, Sunday Mirror, The Weekend Australian, Art and Australia and many more. In 1975 he was awarded Membership of the Order of Australia and in 1988 he won the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW who also mounted his comprehensive retrospective in 1991 titled "Elwyn Lynn: Metaphor and Texture".

Kaare Klint (Denmark, 1888–1954) was an architect and furniture designer known as the father of modern Danish furniture design. He designed icons such as the Faaborg Chair (1914), the Propeller Stool (1927), the Safari Chair (1933), the Church Chair (1936) and the Circle Bed (1938).

EXHIBITIONS: The Piccadilly Gallery, London, October 1989. $2,000–3,000

Adrian Berg (1929–2011) was a highly acclaimed British landscape painter who dedicated his life's work to capturing on canvas his favourite parks, gardens and vistas in the UK and abroad, spending twenty-five years on Regent's Park alone. In 1992 he was elected as a Royal Academician and in 1994 became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Art. Much like his great friend and fellow RCA alumnus David Hockney, Berg believed that representational painting still had more to achieve and explore at a time when abstraction was growing in popularity. The Serpentine Gallery held a major retrospective of his work in 1986.
