The Hyde Collection. Collecting was a lifelong passion for Dr Trevor F Hyde M.B. B. S., F.R.C.O.G.,

Returning to Australia, the Hyde family moved into their newly acquired

1 FRENCH EMPIRE PERIOD ORMOLU CLOCK The case by Pierre-Phillippe Thomire of Clio standing beside a bust of Homer. The movement signed on the backplate and the enamel dial ‘Lesieur of Paris’. On a verde marble base terminating on gilded lion’s feet. French circa 1815. Height 45cm PROVENANCE: Martyn Cook Antiques, 36 Jersey Rd, Woollahra, 1986 $6,000-8,000 2 A GILT BRONZE EMPIRE PERIOD CLOCK The case depicting Cupid with his bow resting against a neoclassical column, on a base decorated with frieze of playing cherubs. The case is by PierreVictor Ledure (master bronzier 1783-1842), the movement is by Claude Hermon, with both names on the enamel dial. Ledure was one of the leading bronziers of the early 19th century with an impressive clientele. His works are mainly in leading collections including The Brighton Pavilion. Hemon, a respected horologer, was established in the Rue de St. Martin by 1810. French circa 1810. 45.5 x 32 x 16cm $4,000-6,000

3 A RESTORATION PERIOD CLOCK In patinated and gilt bronze on sienna yellow marble depicting Psyche and a bee with other neoclassical motifs. The engine-turned dial signed ‘Gitgau Palais Royale No. 140’. Guiteau, a pupil of Breguet, was active between 1811-1824. French circa 1820. 55 x 33 x 13cm $4,000-6,000 4 AN IMPORTANT FRENCH XVI PERIOD BRONZE CLOCK AND CANDLEABRA GARNITURE BY PIERRE-FRANCOIS-GASTON JOLLY The dial signed ‘Gaston Jolly a Paria’ probably executed by the master enameller Joseph Coteau, (1740-1812). Jolly was received into the guild of master horologers in Paris in 1784 and produced some of the finest clocks of the late 18th to early 19th centuries. The fine gilt and patinated bronze neoclassical cases, such as this example, were often supplied by the master bronziers, Robert and Jean Baptiste Osmond. 5 A LARGE FRENCH LOUIS XVI PERIOD ORMOLU AND VERDE MARBLE CLOCK Signed ‘Revel a Paris’ for the master horologer Joseph-Marie Revel (1775-1811). With exceptional gilt bronze mounts, the drumshaped case below and eagle against which are two classical figures representing reading and writing, with a central plaque of a woman and putti at a torchiene, mounts of sphinxes and roundels with the head of Hermes. 8 A FINE AND VERY RARE GILT BRONZE AND VERDE MARBLE NEOCLASSICAL GEORGE III PERIOD ENGLISH CLOCK BY JAMES McCABE OF LONDON. The case depicting Cupid and a swan on a stylised chariot drawn by a stallion on a base of green marble with ormolu mounts and motifs. The movement signed ‘James McCabe, London’, and numbered 2133. McCabe, from a famed Irish family of watchmakers, was active in London from 1775 to 1811. He was made Honorary Freeman of the Clockmakers Company in 1781. His firm continued until 1879. His clocks are in significant collections including the British Royal Collection Trust, both Horatio Nelson and George Washington owned McCabe timepieces. English circa 1805. 30.5 x 38 x 10cm $12,000-14,000 9 AN AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPIRE STYLE CLOCK AND URN SHAPED CANDLESTICK GARNITURE The engine turned decoration in burnished gilt bronze, the case supported by a lyre and two columns with stylised cornucopia brackets on an oval platform, and surmounted by a neoclassical basket with fruit. Signed ‘Ant. Hierner in Wein’, to the dial. Austrian circa 1835. 30 x 23.5 x 16cm $3,000-5,000

10 AN EXCEPTIONAL DIRECTOIRE PERIOD MARBLE, GILT AND PATINATED BRONZE CLOCK Of large scale, with enamelled dial signed ‘Caillouet a Paris’, the movement and case elaborately festooned and mounted with an eagle, on a platform base inset with plaques of playful cherubs. Suspended on two marble columns surmounted by winged sphinxes and decorated with neoclassical motifs, including Egyptian caryatid pilasters, flowers, foliage and urns. 12 A RARE LARGE SCALE GEORGE III BRACKET CLOCK BY HENRY ARNOLD, LONDON The mahogany case with ebony box wood stringing and ebony inlaid and painted with Greco-Egyptian motifs of a bull, an eagle and a lion, the enamel face flanked with quadroform ebony pillars and the whole surmounted in a gilt bronze, including lion ring handles on paw feet. The sides with carved and lined fretwork windows in the manner of Thomas Hope. English circa 1810. 67 x 31 x 8cm

14 A RARE 18TH CENTURY EBONISED BRACKET CLOCK WITH CARILLON AND BIRD AUTOMATON Made by John Henry Borrell (1757-1840). The ebonised wood case with ornamental brass inlays, gilt applications and enamel dial. The case in the shape of a neo-Gothic arch. Beneath the dial is a double-door engraved with bird motif. Behind this a moveable bird. 8-day quarter striking three train fusee movement. Engraved back plate signed ‘J.H. Borrell, London’. This clock was probably made for the Chinese market. 15 THREE TRAIN BRACKET CLOCK BY JOHNSON The 8-day three train movement with anchor escapement, quarter chiming on 8 bells, the 8 inch white enamel dial signed ‘Johnson, Grays Inn Passage’, the back plate similarly signed. Contained in a mahogany panelled broken arch case with brass inlay, with pierced engraved fretwood panels. English circa 1800. Killick, St George’s Place, Hyde Park Corner’, the case finely inlaid with brass neoclassical motifs including dolphins and acanthus scrolls. The brass and ormolu mounted face in polished and inked steel surmounted by a hand enamelled celestial dial and signed, ‘Ralph Wilson, Stamford’. Sydney $8,000-10,000 18 A RARE JAMES II LONGCASE CLOCK The case in fine walnut veneers and elaborate coloured marquetry depicting flowers, foliage, birds and winged female mythological figures. 19 DUTCH MUSICAL LONGCASE CLOCK The 8-day movement with anchor escapement, Dutch striking, a musical train playing 6 tunes on 26 bells. The arched brass dial with silvered chapter Roman numerals and Arcadian minute markings, the dial centre with subsidary dials for Day, Date and Month. Signed by Johannes George Gruning, Amsterdam on the chapter ring. In a typical Dutch walnut veneered case with bombe base and surmounted by three gilded carved wooden figures. Circa 1770. U.K. $12,000-18,000 20 A GEORGE III OAK LONGCASE CLOCK With handpainted enamelled face of a hunting scene and signed ‘WIlliam Buxton, Bishop Huckland, England’. 217 x 50 x 22.5cm $1,000-1,500 21 AN ENGLISH LANTERN CLOCK By Richard Rayment (1686-1754) of Bury St. Edmonds. The case with five finials and three pierced frets over a wide chapter ring with lozenge half hour markers. The dial centre with maker’s signature and foliate scrolls, the movement with anchor escapements and counterwheel strike. English circa 1700. Height 39cm LITERATURE: It was said of Richard Rayment that he was “one of Suffolk’s most important makers”, probably on accounf of the sheer variety and volume of his output. $800-1,200

Height 94cm $600-800 51 A FINE SHERATON PERIOD GEORGE III KNIFE BOX The ‘fold-front’ case in flame mahogany veneers inlaid with boxwood, satinwood and ebony, with paktong metal mounts and feet and a silver shieldshaped armorial. Paktong is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc which was imported from China in small quantities during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centruries. It’s name is derived from the romanisation of the Cantonese pronounciation of the Chinese characters for white copper. Original fitted interior. English circa 1795. 37 x 25 x 25cm $1,500-2,500

177 A SUPERB REGENCY SOFA TABLE Of Pembroke type in fine calamander and rosewood veneer over mahogany. The top is inlaid with a gilt brass scrolling acanthus leaf border and stringing, and mounted with gilt bronze borders. The four bow shaped legs, also known as spider legs, and central roundel are mounted in neoclassical motifs in gilt bronze and terminate in gilt bronze capped feet on brass castors. Attributed to George Oakley. The firm of George Oakley produced stylish furniture in the Grecian taste during the decades spanning the turn of the 19th century, and was one of the pioneers of ‘Buhl’ inlay, a form of decoration that regained popularity during the early years of the Regency. Fashionable materials such as rosewood, mahogany and calamander were often used in Oakley’s furniture, combined with inlays of satinwood and ebony, and brass stars and bands of metalwork. The highclass furniture made by George Oakley earned him a royal appointment and a contemporary reputation for fine craftsmanship. Examples very similar to this table include a pair of card tables in the Royal Collection and a sofa table in the V&A. The buyer’s premium is reflected by a reduction in the Seller’s Commission and is a common practice throughout Australia and overseas. Property subject to the Artist Resale Royalty Lots with the § sign will be subject to payment of the Artist Resale Royalty in the event that the lot is sold for a hammer price of $1,000 or more. The Australian Resale Royalty is a flat rate of 5 percent (5%) levy on the hammer price (including GST). The Australian Resale Royalty is payable by the buyer in addition to the buyer’s premium plus applicable GST. Damage Any viewer who damages a Lot will be held liable for all damage caused and shall reimburse Leonard Joel for all costs and expenses relating to rectification of such damage.

Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Act 1986 (PMCH Act). Buyers should be aware of the PMCH Act which protects Australia’s heritage of movable cultural objects and supports foreign countries’ right to protect their heritage of movable cultural objects. The PMCH Act regulates the export of nationally significant heritage objects, it is not intended to restrict normal and legitimate trade in cultural property, and does not affect an individual’s right to own or sell objects, within Australia.
