Asian Works of Art
In our latest Asian Works of Art auction, with the hope of Spring just around the corner, we are fortunate to offer a very broad survey of historical artworks spanning most of Asia, including China and Japan, Southeast Asia, the Himalayas and India, Islamic works from the Middle East and Central Asia, even works from the Pacific Islands.
—
Of note amongst the early lots in the Indian section are a fine group of works on paper and canvas by the late Indian artist Jivya Soma Mashe (1934-2018). Mashe began his career as a traditional ritual artist of the Warli tribe, but surprised everyone in the 1970s by beginning to create scenes of everyday tribal life. International interest in his works took off after he exhibited in the landmark primitive exhibition ‘Magiciens de la Terre’ at the Centre George Pompidou in 1989. Later he was given the Shilp Guru award in 2002 followed by the Padma Sri in 2011 by the Indian Government. We are particularly proud to offer one of his major works ‘Harvest’ (lot 21). The Japanese section follows with further pieces of Ko-Imari porcelain from the collection of Genine Wallinga including two rare and early Shoki Imari dishes (lots 63 and 64), fine studio ceramics from Kyoto including a hibachi (lot 41) by Imperial artist 124
Ito Tozan I (1846-1920), and a number of Japanese Buddhist sculptural figures including a beautiful bronze Kannon (lot 107). Following the Japanese section is The Burrows Collection (lots 108 to 124). The late Judy and Ian Burrows formed their entire collection of Asian works of art in Tasmania from the late 1960s through to the early 1980s, positioning themselves as leading Asian art collectors of their day. Of particular note in their collection are a large Japanese bronze vase of the Meiji Period (1868-1912) by Genryusai Seiya, with applique bronze reliefs of precious objects (lot 108) and an Imperial Chinese cloisonne dish (lot 123) from the Wanli Period (1572-1620). Concluding their collection is an Imperial edict (lot 124) dating to the fiftieth year of the reign of Emperor Qianlong. This edict contains hitherto unknown information linking two important historical figures as father and son, Aixinjueluo Songali and Jueluo Changlin, marking this lot as an important historical document. Concluding the auction is the Chinese section, with a good selection of Song Dynasty ceramics from various vendors and also Qing Dynasty ceramics, of note being a beautiful red and green copper glazed vase (lot 162) from an old private Canberra collection, and a pair of Republic Period (1912-1949) Qianjiang enamel vases (lot 175) painted by the famous Ma Qingyun, from the Grimmer Estate. It is our pleasure to welcome you to view our August auction, and to answer any questions you may have during the viewings. — Carl Wantrup | Asian Art Consultant

Burrows Collection LOTS 108–124
Judy and Ian Burrows were avid collectors of Asian antiques, scouring the antique sale rooms, shops and private collections of Tasmania during the late 1960s through to the early 1980s. Little was known about Asian antiques in Tasmania at the time so Ian enjoyed the research and the quest, becoming recognised as a leading collector of Asian arts. Their excitement in searching for items of great beauty and refined technique was fuelled by Ian’s passion for the Asian aesthetic whether it be in architecture, the garden or objets d’art. Their various homes were always set within swathes of black bamboo and orchids and housed Ian’s extensive collection of bonsai. Early on Judy and Ian worked within the insurance industry moving later in a real sea change from Launceston to Bicheno on the east coast of Tasmania to establish a highly successful horticultural business and tissue culture laboratory.
