Asian Works of Art —

We have been fortunate to secure a few really interesting collections for our first auction for the Chinese year of the tiger. Firstly, a continuation of the Allan Henry Loomes OBE (1917-1990) collection, with two fine paintings by Malakoul of Thai rural scenes (lots 150 And 151). Loomes was an Australian Ambassador to Thailand in between 1963 and 1968, these works being bought during his ambassadorship. The Chinese works of art section provides a decent overview of the entire history of Chinese culture. It begins with a collection of Song Dynasty Qingbai wares once owned by Lord Francis Egerton Grosvenor (1934-), and collected by him in the 1970s and 1980s in Hong Kong. Of particular note in this group are a bowl with carved decoration of two boys (lot 232), a pair of moulded brush washers (lot 236), and a pair of foliate-rim dishes (238), pairs being particularly difficult to find. Following is a very good New South Wales collection of Neolithic and Bronze Age ceramics including rare Hongshan culture red pottery jars (lots 225 and 226) and a striking Majayao culture painted pottery jar (lot 227). Also in the early Chinese pottery and bronzes section, a small but fine group of Western Zhou and Han Dynasty bronzes are of particular scholarly interest and rarity, most beautiful being a fine gilt bronze turquoise and cinnabar inlaid belt hook (lot 223) and a turquoise inlaid bronze dagger (lot 221). Lastly, rounding off the survey of Chinese historical ceramics, a rare Imperial doucai bowl from the Yongzheng period, also from the Allan Henry Loomes collection.
