Asian Works of Art –
This October, we are fortunate to open with two private collections. Firstly, Japanese lacquer inro assembled over the last forty years, including lot 11, a beautiful five-case inro decorated with horses under pines, utilising hiramakie (inlaid flat decoration), takamakie (raised decoration) and kirikane (gold/metal squares) techniques. And then the Genine Wallinga collection of Ko-Imari porcelain including examples of Kakiemon. Ms Wallinga has been collecting 17th Century Arita porcelain for over 20 years. Also presented is a collection of Southeast Asian sculpture including two particularly fine and early Khmer carved sandstone heads, dating from the 10th Century, bought in 1982 in Melbourne. In the Chinese section, a collection of Kangxi porcelain formed in Holland in the 17th Century by a family involved in the maritime trade, then passed through successive generations until now. Also, pieces from the collection of Ambassador Allan Loomes (1917-1990), who served Australia for many years in both Southeast Asia and South America, and collected most of the Chinese ceramics in his collection in Thailand in the 1950s and 1960s. From a private Toorak collection, a group of four Chinese painted porcelain plaques, one of the most beautiful being a famille rose screen with Hongxian mark (lot 224), mounted in a very finely carved archaistic hardwood table-screen, purchased in Singapore in 1982. Lot 233 is a Republic Period (1912-1949) burl zitan brush or scroll pot with incised

decoration of the Goddess of the Luo and with a carved inscription after Jin Dynasty calligrapher Wang Xianzhi (344-386). This comes from the Law Ming Shek (18991940) collection, an illustrious Cantonese/Hong Kong businessman and collector of calligraphies and art objects, and passed down by descent. Lastly, a very fine Chinese white jade dish (lot 234) from the Imperial workshops, unadorned apart from a four-character Qianlong mark, but of exceptional quality of jade, beautifully carved, and exhibiting the famous ‘soft polish’ utilised on some undecorated pieces of the period. This dish was given to the current owner’s ancestor in 1958, and passed down since that time. — Carl Wantrup | Asian Art Consultant

A PRIVATE COLLECTION OF CENTRAL ASIAN AND RELATED TRIBAL RUGS LOTS 154-169
The rugs in this collection represent the final stage of a tradition of nomadic long-pile weavings used for sleeping purposes, stretching back thousands of years. This tradition was common to many cultures throughout the colder parts of Europe and Asia, and is thought to have its origins in the use of animal fur pelts for sleeping. In many cases, the designs are archaic in the extreme, mirroring designs found in Neolithic cultures from the same areas. Visually, these weavings are at once ancient and incredibly modern, being bold blocks of colour and large geometric designs, and therefore eminently suitable for contemporary interiors.

The PMCH Act regulates the export of nationally significant heritage objects, it is not intended to restrict normal and legitimate trade in cultural property, and does not affect an individual’s right to own or sell objects, within Australia. It is the responsibility of the Buyer to ensure that the export of any lots purchased are not subject to, or in breach of, this Act. Information about the PMCH Act, the Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Regulations 1987 and the 1970 UNESCO Convention, can be found on the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts website at: www.environment.gov.au/heritage/movable/index Exporting Significant Australian Cultural Heritage The export of Australia’s significant cultural heritage is regulated under the Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Act 1986 (PMCH Act.) The PMCH Act implements a system of export permits for certain heritage objects defined as ‘Australian protected objects’. More information is available on the Department of the Environment, Water Heritage and the Arts’ website: www.arts.gov.au/movable_heritage Enquiries can be made to the Cultural Property Section at the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, T: 02 6274 1810 E: movable.heritage@environment.gov.au CITES Regulations It is the buyer’s sole responsibility to comply with all export and import regulations relating to your purchases and also to obtain any relevant export and/or import licences.
