Asian Works of Art

This Summer, our Asian Works of Art auction begins with Southeast Asian art, including a group of Vietnamese ceramics collected in Vietnam in the 1980s, of which two highlights are a gold-embroidered Sumatran Tapis Lampung (lot 1) illustrated in a 1984 issue of Arts of Asia magazine, and a rare inscribed bleu de Hue lime pot (lot 6).

In the Japanese section, a fine offering of Japanese studio and historical ceramics includes an enamelled and gilded Kyoto Satsuma vase by important Japanese Imperial Household Artist, Ito Tozan I (1846-1920) (lot 43), and a small Ko-Kutani dish in the form of Mount Fuji (lot 36), with the triple peak as it was known in the 17th Century, before it was transformed into the crisp flat cone as it became after the famous 1707-1708 eruption.

Our Chinese ceramics section opens with a collection of Qingbai and Longquan wares formed by Diana Stock in the 1970s (lots 130-143), with some Qingbai pieces purchased in London from Bluetts, and Longquan wares including two fine Tobi-Seiji (iron spotted celadon) pieces (lots 142 & 143) purchased in Singapore. The Tobi-Seiji ceramics and another Longquan bowl in the collection, with carved lotus decoration, were exhibited in the National Museum Singapore, in the ‘Exhibition of Celadons and other Related Wares in Southeast Asia’ in 1979, and published in its accompanying catalogue. This exhibition was jointly organised by the National Museum and the Southeast Asian Ceramic Society. Mrs Stock was an executive member of the Southeast Asian Ceramic Society and one of the organisers of the exhibition.

In Chinese paintings, the focal offering is an extremely animated painting of two gibbons by famous Sinagporean/Chinese artist Chen Wen Hsi (1906-1991) (lot 90), also from the Diana Stock Collection, originally purchased in Singapore. Chen was an avante garde artist working in Chinese brush technique but with a Western influence of abstraction and modernist composition. His paintings of gibbons are iconic, and this current example is a particularly fine and expressive work. It will be our pleasure to see you at the viewings, and to answer any questions you may have.

A COMPLETE SET OF HIROSHIGE’S 53 STATIONS OF THE TOKAIDO ROAD, 1981 Limited edition printing (of 280 copies) by Mainichi Shimbun of the 55 oban yoko-e (horizontal) prints from The 53 Stations of the Tokaido Road series ‘Tokaido gojusan tsugi no uchi’ each signed Hiroshige ga. Each print housed in individual folders and luxuriously boxed. 21.3 x 33.9cm each

OTHER NOTES:

The 514 km long Tokaido Road linked the shogun’s capital of Edo (present day Tokyo) and the imperial capital Kyoto. In 1832, Hiroshige travelled with an entourage of the shogun’s officials along the fiftythree ‘halting places’ which started at Nihonbashi (Japan Bridge) in Edo and finished at the Great Sanjo Bridge in Kyoto. Roughly translated as “eastern sea route”, the trip encompassed many ‘meisho’, literally famous sites, such as Mt. Fuji but also rural enclaves and winding mountain passes and hazardous river crossings. It was to be a life-changing journey, for as an urban man of Edo, Hiroshige had experienced life mainly in the capital. He immediately returned to Edo after the trip and began his masterwork woodblock series from the sketches he had made along the journey. Published from 1833-1834, the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido earned Hiroshige great popular and critical acclaim during his lifetime and for generations to come.
