Asian Works of Art
It is with great pleasure that we introduce our catalogue for our latest Asian Works of Art auction to be held on 24 July 2023. This auction includes important decorative arts from old private collections including Chinese jades, ceramics and sculpture, sculptural works from Burma, and Japanese ceramics and prints amongst other pieces, and will be well worth viewing in our Malvern Road premises.
Amongst our offerings is the collection of the late Sarah Isabella Black (1940-2021) of Adelaide, comprising mostly of fine Chinese Ming and Qing Dynasty white jades. After marrying Irish born psychiatrist Dr Peter Black in 1982, the two travelled extensively through Hong Kong and the far East at large, which began her lifelong passion for collecting high quality jades, in local and overseas auction rooms, and overseas dealers. Of particular note in this collection are lots (458 And 459), two very fine Ming Dynasty reticulated belt plaques with dragon design, and two Ming Dynasty hair pins (lots 481 and 483).
Also of interest is a local Toorak collection containing unusual Burmese historical art including three rare ceramic Pegu temple tiles depicting Mara’s army of demons. Lot (250), depicting a pair of bird-headed demons in high relief is particularly outstanding. This collection also includes large mirror-inlaid later Burmese sculptural pieces dating from the Mandalay Period (1853-1948), like lot (257), a pair of dancing temple figures in particularly dynamic poses atop recumbent lions.
In Japanese art, we have an excellent selection of Arita ceramics including a 17th Century Ko-Imari blue and white jug for the European export market (lot 299) amongst others from the Genine Wallinga Collection, and a fine Kenjo Imari twelve-sided bowl (lot 287), similar to one recently donated by Pauline Gandel to the National Gallery of Victoria. Also, some fine later Japanese ceramics including a beautiful early-career celadon vase by Miyashita Zenju (lot 323).
Within the Chinese ceramic section, of note is a large Sui Dynasty white-ware jar of beautiful proportions (lot 393), and a Yuan celadon covered lotus jar (lot 410) from a selection of Song and Yuan celadons consigned from a notable Philippine collection.
It will be my personal pleasure to meet and discuss pieces with interested clients at one of our three viewing days prior to the auction.

A JAPANESE LACQUER FERRY BOAT WITH FIGURES
MEIJI PERIOD (1868-1912)
Impressive pleasure craft in lacquer as a ferryman in gold lacquer and ivory detail assumes his position at the rear of the vessel whilst his two female passengers, also in gold and ivory, point and wonder at goings on around them. The boat rendered in a Mokume nuri (woodgrain imitation) finish with highlights in Hirame flakes. The boat sitting atop a hardwood base in the shape of choppy waves with inlaid mother of pearl. Signed Kominsai on the underside.

Moulded with twelve sides and an everted rim, decorated to the interior in underglaze blue, enamels and gilding with a landscape roundel, the cavetto with shaped reserves against a diaper ground, the reverse decorated with flower sprays in Mughal Indian style.

Decorated in underglaze blue with reserves containing lakeside scenes of a hermit’s retreat and a twisted pine, a cloudy mountain and three tall ships on the water, the reserves separated by floral pendant motifs.

A JAPANESE MOULDED KO-KUTANI DISH EDO PERIOD (1603-1868), 1640-1650
Finely moulded in cushion shape with delicate raised floral decoration to the interior, decorated in underglaze blue and early Ko-Kutani enamels with a crane roundel, possibly the crest of the Mori clan, the back with prunus blossom sprays, a comb tooth border to the footrim and a kaku-fuku (block letter happiness) mark to the base.

Of classic cylindrical form with three short legs, covered in a rich blue enamel (ruri) glaze, decorated in kin-gin (gold and silver) with a horse caught in a spider’s web to one side, and waka poetry to the other side.

OTHER NOTES:
The unusual motif derives from a collection of stories written by the priest Kekno in the 14th century called the Tsurezuregusa, and the Noh play Kanawa, in which the horse caught in the web symbolises man’s flimsy attempt to reign in human passion.

EDO PERIOD (1603-1868)
Of purse form decorated in underglaze blue with three lotus blossoms amongst scrolling foliage, the decoration flowing down to give a hazy effect. Together with an early wooden box with deerskin ties inscribed in red ink by Seichu Soshitsu (Gengensai), naming the chaire ‘Kara-Shibori’ (Chinese blurred), and a fine silk shifuku with Chinese boys design.

Seichu Soshitsu (1810-1877), known by his tea name ‘Gengensai’, was the 11th head of the Urasenke Tea School, one of the three schools descended from Sen no Rikyu. He was an important figure in bringing tea ceremony into the modern era, notably designing a type of tea service for Western visitors in which chairs could be used.

A CHINESE YIXING, JADE AND PAKTONG TEAPOT BY FAN SHUZENG
QING DYNASTY (1644-1912), 1800-1850
Of six-sided mallow section, the zisha Yixing clay body wrapped in paktong and incised with a poem to one side reading ‘Below a bright moon boils the scented brew; Green clouds spring forth most rich in dew’, and bamboo to the other, the inscriptions incised by Wanquan/Jiang Delin (active Daoguang/ Tongzhi periods). The handle, spout and lid handle of pale celadon jade.

OTHER NOTES:
Fan Shuzeng (Fan Shu-tseng) was a well known Yixing artist active during the Qianlong and Daoguang eras, his speciality being encasing Yixing clay with paktong. He is thought to have taken his specialist knowledge in this to his grave.
Wanquan (Wan-Ch’uan) was active from the Daoguang to Tongzhi eras, and was another famous Yixing artist, known especially for his incised decorative work.
