Concluding the sale, the property of Mr J. Smiley, Woollahra, is a refined selection of opulence, elegance, and taste with pieces of this quality rarely found on the Australian auction market. Including a magnificent pair of George IV ormolu photophores (lot 325), two Regence ormolu mounted commodes (lot 324 & 326) and an impressive pair of freestanding revolving bookcases (lot 330).
The contents of Swanton, Sutton Forest (lots 52-162), a sandstone cottage dating back to 1827, convey a taste for the rare and unusual. Featuring far ranging finds dating from a Han Dynasty pottery horse (lot 61) and a provincial Roman marble funerary stele (lot 118) through to contemporary artworks by the likes of Bryan Westwood (lot 156) and Stu James (lot 159).
It’s been said that the items people own reveal something about their owners, that each piece a person selects to surround themselves with has a basic essence or inherent nature relative to the identity of the owner. The eclectic selection of lots within The Collector’s Auction certainly reveal a generous curiosity and desire to expand one’s knowledge of other cultures, crafts, and civilisations.
Worldly highlights from our multiple private vendors include an ancient Greek head of a prince (lot 240), a significant collection of Japanese woodblock prints (lot 222231), and a pair of Australian silver candlesticks engraved with the arms of the barons Rothschild (lot 322), amongst many others.
The selection of paintings by Alan Douglas Baker illustrates the artist’s interest in collecting porcelain and ceramics which he and his wife, Marjorie, surrounded themselves with in their home. Sold for the first time along with the objects featured within the compositions, these lots (28-37) and the following ceramics from his collection (38-51) show Baker’s artistic process and his interest in collecting categories outside of the artworld.
With a selection as broad and varied as the present offering, what do the pieces that catch your eye reflect about you?

In the morning he would pick fresh flowers that he grew with my mother’s help from their extensive garden. Hundreds of camellias, roses, and all sorts of blossom trees, both annuals and perennials. He would arrange them with great care, aware he only had the life of the flower to paint them. After arranging them he would cut a board that fitted the composition without working to a stock size frame.
My parents collected Asian ceramics and objects which my father utilised in his paintings. They both appreciated the artwork and skill used to create these ceramics and enjoyed living with them.
To me, Alan Baker paintings are as fresh as the day he painted them. Flowers themselves are universal symbols of remembrance and love and I feel that he was chasing perfection in beauty.

My father’s studio was located under his house at The Oaks, New South Wales. It had one south window and it was cool, dark, and silent. The light was pure without any sources other than the natural light from the window which faded to total darkness further into the room, rather like a cellar.

During the process of painting it was as though he was in a state of meditation. He often painted with classical music playing, the rhythm of his work leading him to this state of mind. His technical skills refined over decades enabled him to reach this heightened state as he did not have to focus on the difficulties of drawing or the science of colour or tone, instead he used his intuition and muscle memory. He never over-painted and rarely moved away from his easel to view his work during the painting process.

Vienna, 1805, each on a square chamfered base rising to a square shaft with draped female herm supporting the urn shaped fluted nozzle, the base engraved with the arms of the barons Rothschild, incised under the base: S. R. Height 23.5cm, Weight 753g ProbablyPROVENANCE:Salomon Mayer von Rothschild (1774-1855) Private collection, Sydney 322 OTHER NOTES:
The fluted urn shaped nozzles are supported by draped female herms suggesting the caryatids (the sculpted figures serving in the place of columns) of the Erechtheion in Athens, and the overall design is of a pared back classicism close to the spare linear designs of John Flaxman and a foretaste of Biedermeier. The base of each candlestick is engraved with the arms of the Rothschild family and their motto: “Concordia, Integritas, Industria” (harmony, integrity, industry). This hereditary barony was granted to the five Rothschild brothers; Amschel, Salomon, Nathan, Carl, and James, by the Austrian Emperor Francis II in 1822. It is likely that these candlesticks belonged to Salomon Mayer von Rothschild (1774-1855). In 1820, Prince Metternich, Austrian Minister for Foreign Affairs, entered into negotiations with the House of Rothschild for a large loan that was to take the form of a lottery. The complicated arrangements for this enormous loan demanded the presence of a Rothschild in Vienna and thus Salomon, who had been handling Rothschild affairs with Austria, moved to the city and established a bank there. Salomon’s close ties to Metternich were crucial in earning for the family a stake in the restructuring of Europe after the Napoleonic wars. $5,000-7,000

The Rothschilds were a famed banking family at the centre of international high finance during the rapid industrialisation of Europe in the nineteenth century. They were responsible for supporting many of the great railway schemes as well as complex government financing for massive infrastructure projects such as the Suez Canal. Originally from Frankfurt, by the end of the century the family had extensive households in London, Paris, Naples, Vienna, and the Netherlands, and their great wealth, combined with their love of art, luxury, and fine living led to the creation of the expression le goût Rothschild – “the Rothschild taste”. These elegant Viennese silver candlesticks of neo-classical design are dated 1805, the year that Napoleon’s army stormed through Europe, ultimately occupying Vienna after the December defeat of the Austrian and Russian armies at the battle of Austerlitz.

Each standing on three leaf cast lion paw legs, with a central pendant pine cone boss; rising to an anthemion cast, beaded and reeded shaft supporting the stiff leaf and entrelac cast drip pan, and anthemion cast nozzle with bell shaped glass House, London, 1993 OTHER NOTES: These magnificent ormolu hurricane candlesticks typify the antiquarian taste of George IV when he furnished Carlton House as Prince Regent. Similar to a “Gilt bronze torchère of antique form” supplied circa 1805 and designed by Rundell Bridge and Rundell, and now at Windsor Castle. Rundells copied their design closely from contemporary records of the archaeological discoveries at Herculaneum in a folio publication, dedicated to Ferdinand IV of Naples, entitled ‘Delle Antichità di Ercolano’ volume 8, published in 1792, containing 21 plates of ‘Candelabri’. Also influential were the designs of Giovanni Battista Piranesi and his publication “Vasi, candelabri cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne, ed ornamenti antichi…” of 1780. $20,000-30,000 J.
