The Collector's Auction –
It’s always fun and exciting to see what shape The Collector’s Auction starts to take as our consignments come in over the space of weeks, months and sometimes years. Our June iteration is filled with treasures, some we saw a long time ago but have only just now come in for sale and others were a last-minute addition. With the inclusion of two significant collections, the auction highlights both traditional collecting categories and relatively new additions to the scene. Some time ago we were approached to value a particularly special collection of porcelain from the owner of Coddington Antiques, Pamela Massie Greene. When this came in for sale we were delighted and began to turn our mind to other interesting porcelain we had seen and valued, thus the first part of our sale was born. This includes some rare and sought-after pieces from first period Worcester, Royal

Worcester, Meissen, Chelsea and Coalport. The Property of a Gentleman formed the basis for the next chapter in the auction where we find an array of fine furniture and art. Most notably is the Louis XV/XVI transitional kingwood and tulipwood commode (lot 233) acquired from Clive Brans Antiques in 2003 and the George Morland painting Jack at the Capstan (lot 168) which has an impressive and lengthy history having once been in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. In our modern design selection, you will find a rare pair of Ole Wanscher lounge chairs designed in 1939 (lot 244) and two Murano glass Herons made by Luigi Mellara for Oggetti (lot 252). In keeping with our bird theme, Pro Hart’s painting Swamp with Waterbirds (lot 279) is one of the highlights in our modern and contemporary art section, along with two lots from the St Vincent’s Hospital Art Collection (lot 274 and 278). To conclude the sale, we have curated a selection of Asian works of art which features a rare and important Japanese album of woodblock prints by Utagawa Hiroshige (lot 315). This complete set of 55 horizontal prints tells the story of Hiroshige’s 1832 journey along the 514km long Tokaido Road. It is a rare find which will appeal to specialist collectors and novices alike and encapsulates what the Collector’s Auction is all about. We hope you will enjoy the remarkable items in the auction just as we have enjoyed discovering them as we put this auction together. — Madeleine Norton | Senior Decorative Arts & Fine Art Specialist

The Collection of Pamela Massie Greene LOTS 1–44A
CODDINGTON ANTIQUES (1969-2002) Pamela grew up in England during WW2 and after school was a capable administrative assistant in various businesses. Pamela’s interest in antiques was forged while visiting open houses around England and Georgian furniture and glass became her passion. When she worked for Newman and Newman (London), well known porcelain dealers, her talent for recognising good Georgian furniture was acknowledged, the owners asking Pamela to source pieces for their shop. Pamela married an Australian and moved to Sydney in 1959. 18
After being widowed (1966) Pamela purchased her first consignment of silver, porcelain and glass with a small gift from her family. These were quickly sold to dealers around Sydney. Following this initial success and with her contacts in England, Pamela was advised to go into business formally - Coddington Antiques was born. Coddington was the village in Cheshire, England where the family of her husband originated. To finance the next phase of her business Pamela applied to the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney for a loan. She was horrified to learn that in those day’s banks did not loan money to women! With typical Pamela perspicacity, the issue was forced to board level and the loan was approved. Pamela broke the mould by being the first woman to get a bank loan as a second-hand dealer in NSW. The next consignment from London included furniture which was also quicky sold. It was time for Pamela to establish a gallery, in Military Road, Mosman. With a good eye for 18th century (c1740-1820 CE) Georgian furniture, silver and glass, a sound business brain and a dash of courage, Pamela turned Coddington Antiques into a highly respected and thriving business. Pamela had galleries in Mosman and later, Woollahra and exhibited regularly at National Trust Fairs. Pamela held successful lectures for the Antique Dealers Association and was a respected valuer and authority in her field. Pamela is offering a part of her collection in the hope that others may venture as she did as a young woman and purchase porcelain for its refined beauty. —

In June 1947 Earl set sail from Sydney Harbour along with four shipmates on what would become an 18-month long journey to circumnavigate the globe. This voyage was only the
second successful circumnavigation of the world by an Australian crew. Twelve log books chart their voyage complete with illustrations by Earl recording the events and emotions the captain experienced as he sailed. Combined with witty character sketches, photographs and printed souvenirs they were shared each time the yacht docked on each leg of the journey. Eagerly awaited back home, the lovingly crafted logs enabled family and friends to journey along with Earl and by the time of his return in December 1948, thousands crowded the shores to welcome the ship home. The original log books of the Kathleen Gillett were acquired by the State Library of NSW from the Earl family in 2018 and have been digitised. The Kathleen Gillett was bought by the Norwegian government in 1987 and presented as a Bicentennial gift to the people of Australia. It now floats on open display at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour. $1,500 – 2,500

The 514 km long Tōkaidō Road linked the shōgun’s capital of Edo (present day Tokyo) and the imperial capital Kyoto. In 1832, Hiroshige traveled with an entourage of the shogun’s officials along the fifty-three ‘halting places’ which started at Nihonbashi (Japan Bridge) in Edo and finished at the Great Sanjo Bridge in Kyoto. Roughly translated as “eastern sea route”, the trip encompassed many ‘meisho’, literally famous sites, such as Mt. Fuji but also rural enclaves and winding mountain passes and hazardous river crossings. It was to be a life-changing journey, for as an urban man of Edo, Hiroshige had experienced life mainly in the capital. He immediately returned to Edo after the trip and began his masterwork woodblock series from the sketches he had made along the journey. Published from 1833-1834, the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido earned Hiroshige great popular and critical acclaim during his lifetime and for generations to come. This album is a rare extant example of the entire set of 55 prints, one of each of the stations plus two for the beginning and end points. The scenes are a blend of daimyō’s (feudal lord) lifestyle, whimsical images of daily life and ordinary people like merchants and peasants as well as popular stops marked by many temples, shrines and inns, which he made famous through his prints. Hiroshige was able to expertly capture moody and atmospheric weather conditions, rendering mist, rain, snow, and evening effects with great skill and beauty. He was also able to convey a range of human interaction through the figures on the designs, of contemplation, merriment and struggle.
