Heirlooms of Generations Past, Present and Future Fervent collecting has long been suspected to be a hereditary inclination, with families historically bequeathing their collections to their next of kin. Renowned Australian philanthropist and patron of the arts, Lady Primrose Potter AC, and her daughter Countess Krasicki V Siecin (“Pitty Pat”) are no exception. We are thrilled to showcase both collections within our May Decorative Arts Auction, featuring items from their personal collections together with family heirlooms. Lots 1- 34 feature contents from the Peninsula home of Sir Ian Potter and Lady Potter, followed by pieces from Count and Countess Krasicki v Siecin’s collection (lots 35-71). We commence the catalogue with lot 1, a rare Royal Copenhagen ‘Flora Danica’ porcelain service. Prized for its exquisite Danish craftsmanship, each piece boasts hand-cut serrated edges, and the paintwork, all done by hand, is modelled as exact copies of original engravings from the Flora Danica botanical encyclopedia of the 18th Century. Lot 66, a French Boulle cabinet, is an important family heirloom that originally formed part of the furnishings at Mentmore Towers, an impressive 19th Century English country house in the village of Mentmore. A distant relative, Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery married Hannah De Rothschild in 1878, daughter to Baron Mayer De Rothschild, the original resident of Mentmore Towers. The cabinet was later gifted to Lady Helen Dorothy Primrose, and hence by decent to Lady Potter and the Countess Krasicki v Siecin. Not forming part of the well-known Mentmore auction of furniture in 1977, this is a rare treasure for any collector.

Another notable piece is lot 14 (pictured), the lapis and mother of pearl Art Deco desk clock, purchased by Lady Potter’s father Dr Bouverie Anderson Stuart from Hardy Bros. London in 1925 as an engagement present for Lady Potter’s mother, Emma Scott Pell. Both mother and daughter share a taste for chinoiserie, and both collections feature early examples including a George II green lacquered long case clock (lot 7), a George II green lacquered secretaire (lot 63) and a lovely 18th Century black lacquered cabinet on a stand (lot 70). Other highlights from the auction include lot 127, a 19th Century sterling silver rose bowl crafted by acclaimed silversmith Paul Storr. In addition to its excellent quality, it holds interesting provenance, being originally owned by Australian socialite Dame Mabel Brookes. From the same collector we present lot 185, a beautiful Italian white Carrara marble sculpture by Pietro Bernasconi. An identical example was exhibited at The United States Centennial Exhibition, Philadelphia, in 1876, featuring exceptional examples of Italian marble workmanship from the period. Lastly, we have lot 186, a fine 18th Century Italian scarlet tortoiseshell cabinet on a stand that has formed part of a Melbourne collection for over 30 years. These highly desirable cabinets are rarely offered on the market. We look forward to sharing these treasured collections and heirlooms with you virtually and in person. — Chiara Curcio | Head of Decorative Arts

27 A CHINESE INSCRIBED AND HAND-PAINTED MARBLE INSET SIX PANEL SCREEN LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY The hardwood frame set into a later curved stand. The marble panels delicately painted with court figures in landscapes surrounded by a lengthy calligraphic inscription. Each of the screen’s six panels is decorated with a fourteen-character Chinese couplet, the first couplet being repeated, perhaps for literary effect, on the fifth panel. Taken together, the couplets appear to tell the tale of an unknown yet worthy and persevering scholar, who finally attains the ultimate success in the imperial examinations on the last (or leftmost) panel. The couplets are finely composed and draw on literary allusion, which adds to their rhetorical beauty. A transcription and translation of the second couplet (the couplet that appears second from right) is given below as an illustrative example. "The moon impartial has forever shone the same clear white; The flower heedless of renown gives forth a perfume fine."

12

Note that the naturalistic veil of this couplet’s second line harbours the sense of “a certain person who is oblivious to fame and prestige [presumably the persevering scholar mentioned above] is possessed of virtue that bears no relation to his or her station”. This sense is a product of the established analogisation in Literary Chinese of virtuous people to perfumed flowers, and the secondary sense of “beyond one’s station” that is carried by the expression translated as “fine”. Note too that while the translation largely preserves the original’s metre and sense, it could not preserve its word-toword antithesis, which is characteristic of Chinese couplets, and heightens the parallel formed between the moon of the first line and the figurative flower of the second. 63.5cm high, 81cm wide PROVENANCE: Purchased by Dr Bouverie Anderson Stuart from Elwyn Yorke, Edgecliff, NSW, November 23 1954. By decent to Lady Potter. $2,000-3,000
