A LIGHT ON AUSTRALIAN DESIGN Australian design culture sometimes gets a bad rap, and we often look to our European cousins to understand what we ‘should’ be doing. This was, is, and will always be a load of rubbish. Our Australian design history is rich in its aesthetics, and full of creativity and diversity. A positive sentiment that has been gathering speed, finally putting our designers into the spotlight they deserve. Clement Meadmore was foremost an artist ‘with a strong interest in design’. Yet this artist would go on to help define the Australian modernist movement, and in 1952 he would create something discretely historical – The Ultra-Modern Standard Lamp. Created to highlight the works of Wolfgang Sievers and Helmut Newton, Meadmore designed this quietly confident light while working as a freelance industrial designer for the 1953 ‘New Visions’ photography exhibition held at Hotel Federal, Melbourne. This standard lamp marked a significant milestone in Meadmore’s design career as an important example of his early foray into combining sculpture and design. ANNA GRASSHAM Head of Modern Design

PRINTS & MULTIPLES – Auction Wednesday 18 November, 6pm

Our November Prints & Multiples auction takes us around the globe, featuring pieces by artists working across diverse stylistic movements and mediums. Leading this journey is a small collection of rare etchings dated between 1917 and 1938 by sought-after Australian artist, Norman Lindsay (lots 31 - 39). In 1988, Brett Whiteley produced ‘Poem for a Lover’ (lot 89). This hand-coloured silk screen was created in an extraordinary period in his life. Tracey Moffatt (lot 76), Samantha Everton (lot 75) and Simon Eeles (lot 71 & 74) pave the way in Australian contemporary photography with some important and striking examples. Moving across international waters, a pair of photographs by Christo and Jeanne-Claude (lot 85 86) are featured, depicting ‘Wrapped Coast’; a work collaboratively produced in New South Wales, Australia. Gene Davis (lot 93 and 94), a pivotal artist throughout the abstract colour field movement holds two lots within our auction, aligning perfectly with one another. And lastly, Damien Hirst (lot 87), one of the world’s most highly collected artists, draws us in with his etching ‘The Twist.’ We are pleased to present these notable artworks along with many others within our November Prints and Multiples auction.
