An Important Private Collection of Asian Art The ceramics offered within this catalogue were carefully collected over three decades, and give an excellent overview of the history of Chinese ceramics, with works from as far back as the Neolithic Period all the way through to the late Qing Dynasty, many of the pieces having excellent provenance. One of the earliest pieces is a two-handled amphora (lot 1) from the Qijia Culture (2200-1600BC). Although unglazed and of simple potting, it is of historical interest as it marks a transition point between earlier coil-building, and usage of the potter’s wheel which became the dominant building technique in China’s subsequent potting history. The collection is strong in Song Dynasty ceramics, particularly Qingbai, and a highlight of this section is a rare Qingbai double gourd-form ewer (lot 33) dating to the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). This ewer is of fine, even coloured bluish-white, and exhibits all of the grace and elegance of the period, with sinuous lines to the spout and handle. This piece was purchased in 2007 from Roger Keverne Ltd of London, one of the great dealers of Chinese art in the world, although retired as of 2020. Another piece of great interest from the Qingbai category is a rare and exceptional octagonal twin-handled tripod censer (lot 47), which exhibits a very fine and even sky-blue coloured glaze, over the carefully crafted body, and with iron-brown detailing on the lion-mask shoulders to the three cabriole legs. A pale bluish-green celadon ribbed jar and cover (lot 46) dates to the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368), and marks the end of the glory days of the Longquan kilns. The striking vertical ribs along with the gently undulating rim of the lid alludes to a lotus leaf, and gives the jar a restful quality. These pieces were made in numbers both for the domestic market and also for trade to Southeast Asia, but examples of fine colour are rare to find. This jar was sold as part of the Brake-Lau Ackerman Collection by Christies in Melbourne in 1990, and was thence in the collection of the late Julian Sterling until 2007 when it was acquired by the vendor. The collection also comprises some fine late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) porcelain. Within this section is a large cylindrical blue and white tripod censer (lot 56), dating to the Jiajing or Wanli Periods (late 16th Century), undoubtedly made for use in a temple, and strongly decorated with Taoist immortals within a landscape.

The pale bluish-hued porcelain censer (lot 59) was made in the Dehua kilns, around 1640 in the Transitional Period. It has charming rope-twist handles on either side, and is in the form of an archaic ding (ritual cauldron), reminding us of the eternal Chinese fascination with archaic culture and bronzes. This censer was originally purchased from S. Marchant & Son, from their ‘Exhibition of Blanc de Chine’ in 1985. Also from the late Ming Dynasty is a very fine and large Dehua carved porcelain figure of Guanyin (lot 60). With deeply carved drapery and a beautifully modelled face, the figure stands in an elegant pose on stylised clouds, representing the high point in figurative sculpture from the Dehua kilns. A large rouleau vase (lot 70) from the early Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) is a study of Kangxi Period (1661-1722) ingenuity and technical advancement. It features three carp in iron-red enamel playing in a stream abstractly depicted by the ‘powder-blue’ ground, and further embellished with gilding. The powder-blue enamelled glaze was developed in the Kangxi Period, through attempts to replicate a long-lost glaze of the Xuande Period of the early Ming called ‘snowflake-blue’. The motif of the carp in a stream alludes to the mythical journey of the yellow river carp up rapids and over the dragon gate, where they would transform into dragons. Also from the Kangxi Period, an exceptionally finely painted Imperial blue and white bowl of ‘Klapmuts’ form, decorated to the sides with four scenes from the Chinese Yuan Dynasty classic ‘Romance of the Western Chamber’ (lot 68) with a six-character Kangxi mark to the base. The scenes are of men and women meeting in gardens and pavillions, the story being a moralistic and comedic tale of young lovers consummating their love without their parents’ approval. This bowl marks the high point of Kangxi Period blue and white painting, the tone of blue being soft yet vibrant, and painted with utmost delicacy. We look forward to welcoming you to view this scholarly collection, a rarity in the Melbourne Asian art market. — Carl Wantrup | Asian Art Consultant
