The Final Fine Jewellery Collection 2016 - and what a collection it is! To be offered on Monday 28 November commencing at 6pm, this collection boasts an eclectic mix of fine jewellery from all over the world and will attract the interest of a wide variety of buyers. Periods represented range from modern to antique, retro to vintage and everything in-between. Originating from all parts of the world, the markings displayed, materials used and the very recognisable ‘signature’ styles give insight into the story of each valuable piece. Some of these beautiful items can be secured for modest sums, while others are so highly prized they will hammer into the hundreds of thousands. A recent example of this was the spectacular Colombian emerald suite which sold for $366,000. Although difficult to choose just a few items to highlight from so many stand out pieces, below are four personal favorites.

AN ENAMEL BROOCH BY DAVID WEBB IN 18CT GOLD $6,000 - 8,000

A rare diamond ring from the late Victorian period. This 4.5ct oval old European cut diamond was taken from a much earlier piece and remounted into this impressive ring. I chose this piece because of the stunning scintillation. The mesmerizing spectral colours created by the large number of inclined and angled facets. Its beauty is visible to all. With an auction estimate of $40,000 to $60,000 it’s sure to get a few hearts racing. One of the many international pieces comes from the well known and collected New York jeweller, David Webb. The brooch is in the form of a whimsical sea snail. With its fine enamelling and diamond detail, it will likely be hotly contested by collectors. Estimated at $6000 - $8000 it will be exciting to see how far the bidding will go in the Australian market. The Art Deco emerald and diamond brooch by Melbourne jeweller Palfrey is another much admired item with interest from collectors of Australian jewellery and of the Art Deco period, and from those discerning buyers who just admire its rarity and beauty. AN AUSTRALIAN ART DECO EMERALD AND DIAMOND BROOCH IN PLATINUM AND 18CT WHITE GOLD BY PALFREY $6,000 - 8,000

A very impressive Colombian emerald weighing over 24.0cts, mounted in a pendant with fine diamond detail surrounding it, its impressive size and beauty, coupled with a modest estimate make this one to keep an eye on. This sale has a wonderful selection of solitaire diamond rings ranging from 1.0cts up to an impressive 6.0cts. These are perfect for couples looking for that first very special item, those wanting to mark and celebrate their years together or just a personal purchase. The auction estimates will also attract the savvy investors. We are offering bespoke pieces by well know jewellers including Australia’s own Matcham Skipper, together with a large selection of the big international houses Cartier, Boucheron, Chanel, Tiffany, Georg Jensen and Katchinski, to name a few. As this will be the last fine jewellery auction prior to the festive season it will be an excellent opportunity to secure the perfect gift for someone special.

A CHOPARD HAPPY DIAMONDS EMERALD AND DIAMOND WRISTWATCH $15,000 - 16,000

Whether it’s a unique once in a lifetime piece or an irresistible addition to your collection, this auction provides a rare opportunity to secure stunning items of fine jewellery for a mere fraction of their original retail price. Viewings will be held in both our Melbourne and Sydney rooms. If you are interested in attending a special evening preview or have any questions in regard to the auction please contact our jewellery team.

595 QI BAISHI (Chinese, 1863-1957) Morning Glory and Chicks ink and colour on paper signed Qi Huang, with one seal of the artist scroll mounted 104 x 34cm Provenance: ‘Fine Chinese Paintings’, Sotheby’s, Hong Kong, 7 April 2006, lot 163 Exhibitions: Painting Exhibition of Qi Baishi and His Students, Tsi Ku Chai, Hong Kong, 29 May - 6 June 1992 (illus. cover of exhibition catalogue) $170,000-200,000

Qi Baishi (Chinese, 1863-1957) Never formally trained at an art school, Qi Baishi taught himself how to paint by studying the many forms, techniques and traditions of Chinese art history, from naïve folk art to the classical Chinese works of the Qing Dynasty. Credited with bringing a fresh modernism to classical painting, Baishi’s revolutionary work succeeded during a period in which realism challenged the traditional conventions of Chinese painting. Many scholars have attributed Baishi’s background in philosophy and poetry to the stunning simplicity of his work. Growing up in a rural agricultural environment, Baishi’s seemingly innocent and playful works depicting animals amongst foliage are often read as allegories of human experience. Considered one of the great masters of twentieth century Chinese painting, and also teacher to many of China’s most important artists of the last hundred years, this work is a fantastic example of Baishi’s renowned and celebrated ability to deftly imbue his subjects with life. Leonard Joel would like to thank Tsi Ku Chai Gallery, Hong Kong, for their assistance in cataloguing this work. The Barlow Family - Trials and Triumph

The Barlow family survived extenuating circumstances after the death of Benjamin Barlow, the ‘head’ of the family and a bank manager in Bishops Startford, Hertfordshire. A sudden passing at only 53 year of age left his widower and nine children to fend for themselves, selling the family estate titled “The Grange” where the children enjoyed a comfortable life on several 212 A LARGE DOULTON LAMBETH VASE, ‘SIX HORSES’ BY HANNAH BARLOW $800 - 1,600

acres of land with a menagerie of pet and farm animals. With the death of their father, the Barlow children had to think seriously about how they were to survive and make a living. Siblings Hannah and Arthur Barlow were self-taught and their talent was soon noticed by John Sparks, a family friend & the principal of the Lambeth School of Art, who encouraged both siblings to enrol in 1868. John Sparks was involved in the formation of an artist’s studio at the Lambeth factory owned by Henry Doulton. The factory had mainly produced domestic salt glazed stoneware until the employment of George Tinworth, who had been the first artist to be employed in 1867. John Sparks saw the opportunity to employ students of the Lambeth school, and in 1871 both Hannah and Arthur accepted jobs with Doulton & Co. Hannah Barlow was the first female artist to be employed in the factory, soon known for her individualism and famed for her habit of bringing small creatures such as mice and frogs to work in her pocket. Her work was often informed by her love of animals which she was able to study at her own small private zoo which housed more than a hundred creatures, allowing her to sketch into clay directly from memory and handling.

215 A RARE DOULTON LAMBETH VASE BY GEORGE TINWORTH $500 - 800

The family’s patron John Sparks stated that ‘Miss Barlow’s quick sketches of animals show an intense feeling for the spirit of the beasts and birds represented. These etched out figures are, so to speak, instantaneous photographs of the creatures. She possesses a certain Japanese facility of representing the largest amount of fact in the fewest lines, all correct, and embodying in a high degree the essential character of the subject’. As a contrast Arthur Barlow produced work of more organic and abstract manner, with many moulded features applied to the body in a similar style to George Tinworth. The third child Florence later joined her siblings and shared a studio space with Hannah, focusing on birds and pate-sur-pate wares from 1878. From 1882 to 1885 Lucy Barlow joined her family and completed the set, working as a decorator on the pots produced by her sisters. Each retiring in the early 1900’s, the Barlow family has left behind an extraordinary legacy and body of work which has become highly sought after world wide.

CERAMIC HIGHLIGHT EVENT

136 A VICTORIAN MINTON MAJOLICA MONKEY TEAPOT & COVER, 1874 $1,500 - 2,500

This Minton Maijolica teapot reflects the vibrancy and wit of late 19th Century applied arts, modelled as a Monkey clutching on to a coconut. The cleverly designed teapot utilises the monkey’s tail as handle, and hat as knop of the lid. The beautiful polychrome Chinese-style robe with chrysanthemums reflects the influence of Eastern aesthetics on European Decorative Arts during this period. With recent strong international auction results for this collectable piece Leonard Joel is pleased to offer it as a highlight of our forthcoming auction.

Leonard Joel Sydney is pleased to announce in collaboration with the Ceramic Collectors Society an evening with highlights of the forthcoming Asian Art, Classic Furniture & Objects Auction with guest speaker Rhona Clement.

Grace Seccombe was born in 1880 in Staffordshire, England, and followed in her father’s footsteps in studying ceramics. Moving to Australia in 1902, Seccombe’s work focuses almost exclusively on Australian Fauna, the most highly sought after being native birds. Well known for her vibrant slip glazes which have been

Timothy Nicol 02 9362 9045 timothy.nicol@leonardjoel.com.au

attributed to the lead content of her paints, this exquisite pink Galah reflects the faithful accuracy of Seccombe’s designs. A stand out from the more common Kookaburra and Koala subjects, this pretty piece is sure to fly!

They were welcomed by Louis Arpels, who helped them choose a three strand pearl necklace and bracelet, as well as the matching earrings and ring which were created between 1953 and 1956, to be worn by Grace on their wedding day. This was the beginning of a love affair between Van Cleef & Arpels and the Princess. Though the set became a part of her life and she wore it on many official and private occasions, the suite was only one of many purchases to be made by the distinguished couple and the Maison was named “Official Supplier to the Principality of Monaco”.
