Cameron Lyon, architect and design enthusiast, shares his three favourite chairs from his beautiful collection.

In conjunction with the November Modern Design auction Leonard Joel are delighted to present the Cameron Lyon collection of Grant Featherston furniture. This is the largest Featherston collection ever offered at auction in Australia, significant for design enthusiasts, collectors and creatives.

10 GRANT FEATHERSTON ELEANOR CHAIR In speckled cherry upholstery Australia, c1950s 81h x 108w x 74d $5,000 - 6,000

The symbiotic relationship between architecture and

furniture

design

is

an

acknowledged

trend that has been a feature of the collecting demographic for Modern Design auctions as the category has evolved at Leonard Joel over the past three years. There is perhaps no better example of this phenomenon than the collection of Australian designer furniture assembled by

Melbourne architect, Cameron Lyon. The Lyon family collection of Grant Featherston designed furniture began as a project to build an encyclopedic collection of the designer’s works. Long regarded as the ‘go-to’ client for particularly fine examples of Featherston’s, the collection was ‘edited’ a number of times over the years and duplicate examples were dispersed. What remained, was a core collection of iconic examples, some which have rarely been seen outside of institutions, if at all. Leonard Joel is proud to be entrusted with the dispersal of the Cameron Lyon Collection of Grant Featherston furniture.

A captivating journey Anyone can amass a group of collectable items, but it takes dedication and passion to build a true collection.

Dr Dinesh Parekh has spent

every spare moment outside of his psychiatry profession, finding external expression to his internal world by searching for and then acquiring photographic images and photogravures that have captured his heart. This has manifested itself into a highly personal collection of images that until a few years ago could be counted in the thousands. Some five years after the successful sale of his cameras and the first chapter of his international photographic collection, we have arrived at the final dispersal of Dr Parekh’s much

loved

‘other

family’

because,

after

fifty-five years, this philosophical gentleman feels that it is time. Dr Parekh’s extensive visual library which also includes a select number of books and portfolios, embraces many classic genres spanning almost two centuries. The scope and changes in portraiture is illustrated with an early ethereal image of Mrs Herbert Duckworth c.1865 by Julia Margaret Cameron refreshingly contrasted with Franz Fiedler’s image of his mother that equally 49 PAUL STRAND (American, 1890-1976) Tailor’s Apprentice, Luzzara, Italy 1953/1994 platinum print 45.9 x 33.2cm $1,500-2,500

positions manipulated photographic processes as the subject of his work. Other works favour a focus on the composition such as William Eugene Smith’s Juanita Holding Rose c.1953 and Edward Steichen’s artful and tender Portrait of Joanna Taub Steichen, Autumn 1959, his wife, some fifty years his junior. The vignettes are always intriguing; I find myself looking repeatedly at Joel-Peter Witkin’s Studio of the Painter (Courbet), Paris 1990, admiring the sculptural style of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s Camonodo Stairs, Galata, Istanbul 1964 and endlessly

photography, the antithesis of 21st century digital photography and the world at large. In fact when you think about it, much of Dr Parekh’s collection is testament to and a celebration of ‘slow’ time, something sadly lacking in our tech-driven world. This highlights catalogue only hints at the range of the collection. So, I urge you to visit the full exhibition online or in-room of some 300 plus works charting both Dr Parekh’s own visual perspective and the history of photographic

Diamonds are forever Diamonds are forever. However, the opportunity to secure these rare gems will not last that long! The countdown is on for the final Fine Jewellery sale for 2016 on Monday the 28th of November.

An unprecedented offering of diamonds will be going

under the hammer in this auction, presenting a rare opportunity to secure your dream piece. Your perfect diamond can be discovered amongst a diverse selection of cuts, sizes, colours and clarities. Suiting budgets from $1,000 $100,000, the diamonds being offered are in a variety of styles and settings. There are a large number of loose diamonds also on offer, giving the buyer the freedom to design their own setting or simply stow it away as an investment. We have numerous examples of what is widely known and accepted as the ‘ideal cut’. Perfected by Tolkowsky, the modern round brilliant was developed 15 AN ART DECO DIAMOND BRACELET $15,000-20,000

to give the best light return from the diamond. This auction has a large selection of modern brilliant cut diamonds starting at 1.0ct all the way to breath-taking examples such as a 2.27ct classic engagement ring mounted in a four claw platinum setting. This is accompanied by a GIA laboratory certificate stating the colour as D and clarity VS2; estimated at $50,000 to $80,000. Another example is a 3.0ct unset diamond accompanied by an original GIA certificate stating the colour as D and clarity VVS1. It carries an auction estimate of $85,000 - $120,000. For bidders looking to secure an important piece of Art Deco jewellery, often set with transition cut diamonds which exist in a timeline between the old European and the modern brilliant cut diamonds. There are a number of lots worthy of special mention. Three such pieces are: a solitaire diamond ring, set with a 5.9ct transition round brilliant mounted in an Art Deco platinum setting with four extenuating sapphires to each shoulder estimated at $40,000 - $60,000; a pair of early deco earrings each set with a 2.27ct diamond, accompanied by GSL laboratory reports stating colour J and clarity VS, with an estimate of $24,000 - $36,000; and a beautiful deco bracelet with three principal diamonds

309 AN IMPRESSIVE OLD EUROPEAN CUT DIAMOND RING $40,000-60,000

-the centre stone graded at 1.5ct, colour E, clarity VS. Also on offer are several good options of rare, large old European brilliant cut diamonds. In the old European cut there are two in particular which are sure to turn a few heads. Both well over 4.0cts and showing incredible scintillation. The cushion 4.54 set in its original art deco mount is estimated at $30,000 $40,000. The oval weighing 4.39cts has been remounted into a contemporary setting. It carries an estimate of $40,000 - $60,000. One of my personal favorites is a solitaire diamond ring set with a 3.25ct emerald cut diamond accompanied by a GSL laboratory report stating colour J clarity VS1. It carries an estimate of $30,000 - $50,000. 30 AN IMPRESSIVE ART DECO SOLITAIRE DIAMOND RING $30,000-50,000

If you are interested in attending a special evening preview Thursday 24th November 6-8pm, or have any questions regarding the auction please contact our jewellery team.

First time auction buyers, be aware that the estimates are a guide only. The reserve is never set higher than the low end estimate. Some of the estimates are a fraction of the retail price and at times, wholesale. Bidders are guaranteed by Leonard Joel if they bid above the reserve during the auction and there is no competing bidder, the item will be hammered to them.
