Spirited buying The November sale certainly proved to be a fine finish for the art department. Contemporary and modern art was celebrated by way of noticeably competitive bidding and spirited buying. The cover lot, Criss Canning’s stunning Summer Flowers and Japanese Fabrics c.1997 made an impressive $24,800 IBP, while bidders took advantage of Graeme Roche’s infrequent appearance at auction, with his pencil studies achieving up to $4,216 IBP and the striking oil work, Hot Sunday, reaching $16,740 IBP. Gallery favourite Paul Davies’ Green Sky Modern Blue Copy 2006 sold at the high end of its estimate range for $11,160 IBP and Anne Wallace’s intriguing 2001 painting Fury hammered for $7,440 IBP. Emerging secondary market artist Joel Rea also had an exciting night, his large canvas works setting high auction benchmarks of $21,080 IBP and $12,400 IBP. ARTHUR STREETON (1867-1943) The Abbey and The Oak Tree oil on canvas, 35 x 45cm

Singaporean master Cheong Soo Pieng; his two gouache around the world, finally selling for $26,040 IBP and $26,660 IBP respectively. A beautiful work by Japanese artist Kaoru Yamaguchi, titled Yellow + Horses, also inspired some competition, finding a new home for $15,500 IBP. International works continued to perform well across the board, with French artist James Tissot enchanting etching, Soiree D’ete 1882, reaching $3,224 IBP and a large canvas work, Virgin and Child, after Spanish artist Bartolome Esteban Murillo taking the room by surprise, with fierce bidding seeing the work finally sell for $8,060 IBP against its $1,000-2,000 estimate. The top price of the night went to the deserving The Abbey and The Oak Tree by Sir Arthur Streeton, won by a happy phone bidder for $49,600 IBP. The combination of Dargie and Streeton proved a winner, with William

to $6,680 IBP. Clarice Beckett’s atmospheric Yarra Winter Night c.1929 went over the higher end estimate, the hammer falling at $17,360 IBP. Of special interest was Clifford Dudley Wood’s WWII work Footsloggers c.1945, which achieved a worthy total of $9,300 IBP. Mid-century and later moderns yielded some great results; Ray Crooke’s Stockman In Bar, North Queensland attracted strong interest, selling for $6,200 IBP, while Race Across the Sandbank by David Boyd ticked all the right boxes for buyers, finishing at $13,640 IBP. Serene The Red Road 1957 by Kenneth Jack sold for $4,092 IBP, proving the demand for his early works. Michael Shannon’s The Royal, Innisfail 1969 went to a happy Australian home for $11,160 IBP. The November results bring the Fine Art tally for 2016 to over $3.2 million, the result cementing Leonard Joel’s strength as the most diverse leader in the secondary market leaders for fine art. We are looking forward in particular to further expanding the developing markets for Contemporary and Asian art in 2017. JOEL REA (born 1983) Fear Fallen 2006 oil on canvas, 140.5 x 140.5cm

offering the Cameron Lyon collection of Grant Featherston. The largest representation of the designer’s work ever to be auctioned in Australia. With a 90% clearance rate, the famous Australian furniture designer certainly has not lost his fan base, even 60 years on. It was no surprise that the rarest piece, the Grant Featherston 51 Easy chair caused enthusiastic bidding online and in the room; realising $11,780 IBP Increasing demand for second hand Italian designer furniture fuelled record prices across the spectrum. A B&B Italia suite of furniture by Antonio Citterio and Paolo Piva realised a cool $23,546 IBP. The ever popular B&B Italia Alanda coffee table, which is no longer in production, fetched a record price of $5,456 IBP. This constant rise in the high end secondary furniture market is proving to be a strong investment for both buyers and sellers. A big thank you to Conor & Cameron Lyon for
