Fusion of Styles & Collections This May Melbourne and Sydney join forces again for our dedicated Decorative Arts national auction. Both states have been blessed with a diverse selection of rare collectables, classic decorative arts, and a strong offering of Japanese works from 18th Century EDO times to the modern period. Of particular note in the Sydney offering is the collection of Japanese historical and modern studio ceramics. Savvy collectors will have the opportunity to acquire multiple high quality export Imari ware works as well as a range of contemporary pottery and celadon pieces that would fit in any modern setting. The showpiece of the Melbourne sale is the famous album of woodblock prints, One Hundred Aspects of the Moon, by Ukiyo-e Master, Yoshitoshi Tsukioka. It 402A A RARE CHOPARD MOON PHASE ‘LUNA D’ORO’ TRAVEL DESK CLOCK $1,000-2,000 VIEW IN SYDNEY
is incredibly rare to find complete albums given the many natural disasters and the calamity of WWII. In addition, we are pleased to offer a beautiful collection of high quality Satsuma works as well as museum quality Edo and Meiji period lacquerware amongst many other treasures. One fine example of the Melbourne collectables highlights is lot 56 an antique Bechstein grand piano, that tells a rare story of one of Australia’s most iconic female musicians in history. We were in absolute awe when Judith Durham sought our advice about her personal antique Bechstein piano; the very piano where Judith penned and created ‘Australia Land of Today’. The Bechstein has been in Durham’s possession for some 45 years, purchasing the piano in Switzerland in 1973 it went on to follow her around the world until she resettled in Australia. The Bechstein was the special place where many of Durham’s songs were created, and important concert elements rehearsed. Leonard Joel Melbourne are also delighted to present the most important clock ever to be offered for public auction in Australia. Lot 160, the Grand complications table clock is a museum quality example of 18th century mechanical craftsmanship with exceptional attention to detail. This extremely rare triple fusee clock, has an eight day movement with a perpetual calendar

which accounts for leap years and full calendar moon phase. This feat in horology would be the perfect piece de resistance for any seasoned clock collector. Leonard Joel Sydney is thrilled to be showcasing the collection of a “Connoisseur & Curator” NSW, and the collection of a “Patron of the Arts” Queensland. As well as outstanding Japanese applied and decorative arts, these two collections feature many pieces from other traditional categories. Showcasing many impressive pieces of large scale, both collections are well suited to the Modern collector and decorator. We have received a lot of early interest in lot 308 a large scale Chinese blanc de chine jar and cover, and lot 309 the magnificent soldier vase which measures over six foot tall. Harmonising with the outstanding Melbourne feature clock is a diverse array of horological treasures spanning the ages, from lot 397 a Louis XV ormolu mounted mantle clock, to lot 402A the rare 20th century Chopard moon phase “Luna D’Oro” travel desk clock. It is with great excitement that we present this fusion of styles and collections, reaffirming our commitment to promoting the decorative arts on a national platform.

The Crone Collection of Football Memorabilia Dave Crone was a VFL football player, having played a handful of games from 1915-1920, for both the Fitzroy and Carlton teams. However it was the First World War that was responsible for Crone’s small tally of games. During his early years Crone had applied to participate in WW1. In 1916 he volunteered to serve in Egypt with the 8th Australian Light Horse Brigade, however due to medical reasons was unable to continue serving. He was however recognised for this skills and was nominated as acting Squadron Sargent Major in Broadmeadows, where he was responsible for training newly enlisted troops before they were

shipped out to the middle east. It was during this time that Crone was sparingly able to play for the Carlton team when available. During 1917-1920, Crone played a total of 22 games, scoring a tally of 4 goals. Finally being accepting into the AIF in 1918, Crone did not return to Melbourne until 1919; where he played his final four games for Carlton in 1920 . Crone however is best remembered for his time spent as the Carlton football club president from 1929-1937. Crone was also a Victorian selector for some years, most notably involved in the successful 1930 and 1933 Australian National Football Carnivals in Adelaide and Sydney. Amongst The Crone collection of Football memorabilia are VFL membership tickets from as early as 1874 to 1920. In this collection is lot 13, a very rare rabbit burrow membership ticket from 1880. The Carlton FC formed the Rabbits in 1880, the name was based on the technique of ‘rabbiting’ (a player stooping down so as to case another to fall by placing his body below the other’s hips), which coincidently was banned the same year. Also part of the collection is lot 32, a desirable item for football and military collectors alike, as it is a rare snapshot of the 8th Light Horse Brigade after having played a scratch match at

Leonard Joel shows the way in Japanese works The field of Japanese art has certainly operated in the shadow of the heightened interest in Chinese antiques during the last ten years. Of course, collecting trends come and go but ‘good’ things will always remain. One of the brilliant things about Japanese works is the way in which they don’t often tell the whole story. Suggestion, allusion or metaphor, all provoke thoughts and

Japanese works now and in the future. The savvy collector will see many an opportunity in our strong offering at the May 14 Asian Art, Classic Furniture & Objects auction. Lot 278 A LARGE CLOISONNE VASE, EARLY 20TH CENTURY (ATTRIBUTED TO ANDO WORKSHOP) In silver wire and coloured enamels with a continuous design of strands of chrysanthemums and plum blossom on a yellow ground, the foot and rim in stiff leaf jungin (pure silver), 32 cm high. The chrysanthemum is a significant symbol in Japanese art, being the crest of the Imperial Family. It is associated with longevity from the story of Kiku JIdo, an Imperial courtier banished from the Chinese Court who spent his life in a cave writing longevity characters from sutras on chrysanthemum leaves and floating them down a stream. Chrysanthemum wine is said to enhance longevity. Eccentric Canberra collection comes to Melbourne After decades of collecting; queer researcher, poet and historian Paul Knobel has decided to disperse his amassed collection at public auction in May 2017. No stranger to auction rooms, art galleries and antique stores worldwide, Knobel has spent a lifetime studying the artistic products of various cultures ranging from western religious iconography to indigenous Australian art. His studies have taken him on a journey to sixtythree countries to date, with his collection being a veritable map of the countries he has visited. For anyone who has met Paul, using the word eccentric is not hyperbole, he is an inquisitive man with interests in varying fields, and his collection could be used as an anthological guide to his interests and studies. Often when bumping into him unexpectedly you learn he is working on a new thesis with an unusual subject matter; he recently published a 1,500 page gay history of the world. So it is no surprise that an unassuming academic with diverse interests, should have an eccentric collection. Amongst the collection are copious amounts of unearthed Chinese pottery, classical European landscape paintings, 100 A RARE GRECO- ROMAN TORSO (1st cent AD to 1st century BC) $20,000-25,000

no

Australia’s
mid-century
furniture designers are certainly not fading into the background of yesteryear. The demand for these hand crafted pieces was exceedingly evident during Leonard Joel’s first Modern Design auction of 2017. The April auction hosted an array of significant Australian designers such as Schulim Krimper, Dario Zoureff and Jakob

SOLD $7,440 IBP
Many of the designer pieces hammered four times the estimated value, bringing record sale prices to the Australian market. Highlights include the lovely Schulim Krimper blackbean cabinet selling for $7,440 IBP and a stunning solid oak Jakob Rudowski sideboard realising $4,960 IBP. The highlight of the night, an intricately carved Dario Zoureff sideboard which sent the room into a bidding frenzy, finally falling on the hammer at $7,440 IBP. It is wonderful to see this ongoing love and preservation of Australian post-war design, to still appreciate the traditions and skill these European immigrants brought to our country. The Crossing of East and West International art has always experienced ebbs and flows on the Australian market, and Asian art is no exception. Since the 1990’s we have seen the market for Asian art, specifically that from the 20th century, show enormous changes in value and demand leaving many auction houses eager to gain a more solid position within this new category. The South-East Asian art market has commonly been viewed as a different realm from other art scenes, largely due to the driving force behind buying patterns – that is mostly patriotic or cultural, with buyers often being from the same country of origin as the artist. However, as this market becomes increasingly more sophisticated so does the pool of interested parties. From the newly affluent who are dipping their toes into investment opportunities, to those delving into the deep end with their own private foundations and museums. Furthermore, there is no longer the divide between East and West – buyers and sellers are emerging from all over the globe and are being seen with increased frequency and an ever more diverse range of interests in both Eastern and Western Art. Asian collectors now not only buy blue-chip western artists or blue-chip Asian artists, but also seem to take more risks to acquire a wider range of art from across the Asian region. Our Fine Art department has been, in more recent years, delving into this sphere of the “New Collector” with great enthusiasm. Not only are we seeing widespread increases in buying patterns from Asia, but also through the consignment of rare and highly collectible South East Asian artworks. Leonard Joel is the only auction house in Australia to have offered works by renowned Singaporean artist, Cheong Soo Pieng, and now we are now preparing to offer our seventh work by the artist at auction here in June 2017. Soo Pieng’s work is an outstanding blend of East and West sensibilities, progressing into abstract experimentation as well as narrative figuration, all whilst maintaining a keen awareness of 20th Century aesthetic modernity. With strong results behind us, the painting is set to cement Leonard Joel’s position in the global Asian art market, further proving that the cultural divide between the East and West CHEONG SOO PIENG (Singaporean, 1917-1983) Blue Atmosphere 1966 oil on canvas $90,000-120,000

The safest way to value your jewellery Leonard Joel is pleased to announce the introduction of In Situ Jewellery Valuations. Offering clients a personalised service to value jewellery in the place of your choosing, whether it be the home, office or bank vault. There is generally no need to remove jewellery from your premises, ensuring security and peace of mind that items are safe and still with you at all times. Practicing gemmologists, diamond technicians and registered jewellery valuers we are well qualified to provide expert opinion, service and advice. An extensive range of gemmological equipment is used in assessment, so jewellery can be accurately identified and verified on site. All items are photographed for precise referencing and identification and are included in our report. We can customise the valuation report to suit your needs whether it be for a single item or a large collection. Market, insurance, probate or matrimonial valuations we can ensure that you know what your jewellery is worth in any context. Unfortunately with jewellery robberies increasing, it is now more important than ever to ensure that you have your items valued and photographed, to act as a safeguard and providing you with security and as a precaution. Speak to the professionals who have complete valuation and identification expertise. To make an appointment contact Caroline Tickner at caroline.tickner@leonardjoel.com.au or 8825 5638.
