COLLECTABLES FEATURING THE MARTIN BODINAR COLLECTION
Martin Bodinar with his collection
During his lifetime, Martin Bodinar was widely known as one of Australia’s preeminent collectors of vintage toy trains, model cars and toys. Though born in England, he spent the majority

of his life in Australia, collecting train sets from a young age with his school lunch money and proceeds from his part-time job at a toy shop. In his 30s, a burgeoning collection under his belt, Martin began buying and selling toys, spending many a cold morning hunting around local markets, visiting garage sales and scouring the trading post for items to add to his own collection or to resell. Through this ongoing treasure hunt, Martin acquired a wealth of knowledge and developed many friendships in the hobby world. His hobby became a full-time business when he retired in his early 40s, and a flourishing second career. His business expanded further when he took over the organisation of the Box Hill Swapmeet in the 1980s before moving it to its current location in Forest Hill, where it is still run by his family. Martin, along with several close friends, organised fairs and auctions that attracted visitors in the thousands. Considered an expert by many in the field, Martin was also regularly contacted for valuations of individual items and collections. The Martin Bodinar Collection will feature as Lots 1-250 of Leonard Joel’s forthcoming Collectables Auction on 14 September.

the design world when he worked at Melbourne’s iconic department store, Georges on Collins street, where he was exposed to high end products and met Melbourne’s elite clientele. With a keen sense of style and a commercial mind, Jean-Pierre spent his spare time hand selecting collectables from opportunity shops. “I would walk from op-shop to op-shop, collecting pieces and selling them for a profit. The clutter in my room horrified my parents.” His passion for collecting later sent him overseas where he would often visit antique stores and flea markets all over Europe. India is also a permanent stamp on his passport, where he draws inspiration from nature and animals, visibly apparent from the vast array of animal prints in many of his clients’ lavish homes. We are thrilled to offer the interiors of Jean Pierre’s home on 19 October. Contact us now to register your interest and we will notify you when the catalogue is online. Chiara Curcio

THE 22ND REPORT #6 A VOLUNTARY POLICY FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF AUCTION TRADE IN RHINOCEROS HORN AND ELEPHANT IVORY
This month, Leonard Joel will present its voluntary policy position on the cessation of auction trade in elephant ivory and rhino horn to the global stage when Managing Director, John Albrecht attends an international auction summit, in Boston hosted by our online bidding partner, Invaluable. The event will bring together representatives from the world’s top auction houses in one place to exchange ideas, discuss best practices and propel the future of the industry forward. As we strive to spread the word and encourage others in the industry to adopt the same policy, we wanted to share with you, our clients, details of the voluntary position we undertook on 1 January 2016.
