International & Interesting While in Adelaide I was fortunate enough to spend both an evening and a day wandering and admiring Lady Porter’s immaculately presented collection, just as she had lived with it. Inevitably collections tell stories and this very Adelaide collection was no exception. What struck me was its sheer diversity – international in character, often adventurous in subject matter and objects and not just of silver and gold. By Saturday evening I knew my favourites and I am not surprised that they all enjoyed spirited bidding. If I was to bookend my five highlights it would begin with lot 15, the imposing Queen Anne chest on stand that greeted visitors to June’s apartment. At auction it realised an impressive $9,160 and confirmed that there remains a serious appetite for fine pre-Victorian English furniture. At the other end would be the bold design and materials deployed in lot 82, the Jaeger LeCoultre desk clock. The glamorous 1970s

A STRAND OF SOUTH SEA PEARLS, RETAILED BY PASPALEY SOLD FOR $12,400

design of this timepiece explained perfectly for me how unrestricted June was in her approach to collecting and I have no doubt it was acquired on some international adventure! Put more simply, it did not have to be “old” to be part of June’s aesthetic, and it realised almost $2,000. Between these results of the old and the new were other notable highlights. Lot 215, the rare watercolour by McQueen, a landscape artist recognised for his unique approach to light and composition, realised $9,300. The property was AN AGRICULTURAL MEDAL, DATED 1905 AND AWARDED TO JAMES W PORTER FOR BEST HOLSTEIN COW OR HEIFER SOLD FOR $2,480

also carefully decorated with sculpture and the bronze of dancers by the artist Dowie, lot 229, perfectly captured June’s lifelong commitment to the arts and ballet. This joyous sculpture realised $9,300. And lot 281, the necklace of South Sea pearls and topaz that often adorned June on arts-related special and public occasions, sold for $12,400. This collection of almost 400 lots told numerous stories, both local and international in character, and I have little doubt that many of those stories will be maintained with the new owners of this now celebrated collection. Angry Penguins. The vanguard artists of the group included Sidney Nolan, Charles Blackman, Arthur Boyd, Albert Tucker, Joy Hester and John Perceval. Their work was infused with a revolutionary modernism, influenced by the European avant-garde, yet still maintaining a figurative tradition. Our June auction is curated with a modernist preoccupation. Leading the charge, is the important De Stoop Collection containing significant examples by Charles Blackman and Joy Hester accompanied by essays by renowned academics Felicity St. John Moore and Dr. Janine Burke respectively. After completing his schoolgirl series in 1954, Charles Blackman turned to solitary figures, loosening his technique as well as his imagination. As in the present paintings these were

sometimes of adolescent boys and partly autobiographical.

and Boy in the Bush 1954 (lot 53), the singular figure is at once child and man, existing somewhere between dream and reality. Both float on a timeless ground with natural light excluded; the effect being that life seems to come from the action within. Felicity St. John Moore – excerpt from full catalogue essay Paintings of people holding farm or native animals – such as Girl With Cocky c.1957 (lot 54) - are linked to her perception of the land through its people. Hester, concerned with questions of identity, chose the face as her primary vehicle of expression and the image of the Child – often a young girl – to suggest wide-eyed innocence, vulnerability, imagination and the inner life. Dr. Janine Burke – excerpt from full catalogue essay In good company with the De Stoop Collection, are other significant paintings by Arthur Boyd, Charles Blackman, and Yosl Bergner. Lot 63, Charles Blackman’s Sleeping Boy 1954 is an exemplary early work by Blackman, further highlighting the artist’s predisposition to portray the biographical. With Barbara Blackman further transitioning into blindness, Charles reveals his own subconscious in the painting. The boy’s reclining pose and stillness of sleep are contrasted against the crisp and sharp lines of the figure’s form and dark shadowed background. Arthur Boyd’s The Stoat 1990, lot 64, revisits the artist’s postwar exploration of the harsh nature of the Australian landscape. Following a trip through Central Australia, Arthur introduced imagery of skulls and lifeless animals into his oeuvre, which he further revisited in his later years as illustrated in The Stoat. We look forward to sharing these artworks with you in our upcoming winter June Fine Art auction.

Contemporary Upholstery Fabrics By nature I’m a purist when it comes to antique furniture. I like to see pieces in their original condition and although I do not encourage refinishing or over painting, one alteration I do encourage is upholstery. That is not to say the sympathetic buyer has cart blanche to get out the scissors and carve up 18th century tapestry and silk covers, please don’t! Simply upholster over it or get your upholsterer to carefully remove and store. Upholstery is furniture fashion throughout the ages. It has allowed collectors to express their taste and interior designers to create a statement piece. Contemporary upholstery fabrics are currently at their peak with a more diverse selection than we have ever seen throughout history. Not only do we have the choice of traditional historical tapestries and silks, the bolder of us also have a fabulous selection from designers such as; Utopia Goods, an Australian artisan brand hand painting fabrics; Paul Smith’s iconic coloured stripes and other fashion powerhouses following suit, such as the recently released line by Jean Paul Gautier. I encourage you to go forth and be bold, take our forthcoming blank canvas of a settee and make it yours! Robert Williams Head of Decorative Arts Sydney

A profile of Cassina “Amedeo Cassina” was created by brothers Cesare and Umberto Cassina in 1927 in Meda, Italy, and the company has been designing innovative furniture for over 90 years. The company launched industrial design in Italy during the 1950’s by taking a completely new approach to their predecessors, shifting from handcraftsmanship to serial production. They were champions of research and innovation, which led to many groundbreaking designs that are still being produced today by some

of the most talented designers and architects. Cassina wanted their designs to be perfectly functional, of excellent proportions and so neutral that it will take on the personality of its owner, leading them to reinvent chairs and other pieces of furniture as if no one had ever built them before. In 1964 the “Cassina I Maestri” (Cassina Masters) Collection was created, which included the acquisition of the rights to products designed by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, arguably the most acclaimed 20th century designers. The Cassina brand today still remains true to their original vision, producing the most innovative, classic and contemporary designs of the 20th century and beyond. THE VALUE OF PRINTS - PART 2 Since the arrival of the digital printer we have had to learn a lot in short time about new age printing. The Ink-jet printing (also known as giclee print) and digital laser are the most common forms of modern printing and can be produced from a computer file image and sent directly to the printer. With pros and cons looming, it’s safe to say that the artistic value and personal touch has been somewhat lost by this process. However, there are benefits to this form of printing, you can achieve a high volume in short amount of time and it’s a cost effective alternative with no plate or block required giving the medium a low maintenance advantage. A WEEK IN THE LIFE

OF TANITH HARLEY, THURSDAYS AT LEONARD JOEL FURNITURE & INTERIORS MANAGER MONDAY: We start the week off receiving consignments for our Thursday Interiors Auction. This is a great opportunity to meet with clients and take a look at their items. It’s exciting as you never know what is going to come through the doors. We receive a fantastic array of pieces that can vary from Georgian Antiques through to Taxidermy and Mid Century Furniture. This is the day that I also begin to think about the room layout for the week.

TUESDAY: Tuesdays are generally our busiest day on the floor. Our fantastic team set up and arrange all the items for the upcoming viewing day and auction. This includes, styling, lotting, photographing, measuring and uploading onto the website. I’ll squeeze in a quick lunch break and catch up with my other colleagues and hear about what they have got in for their auctions.

WEDNESDAY: On Wednesdays we are open for viewing! I love Wednesdays as I get an opportunity to go through our valuations and phone calls with clients and see familiar and new faces discovering treasures. If the weather permits, I’ll take a quick break and get some sun for a few minutes!

THURSDAY: Auction day! Furniture & Interiors starts at 10am and we generally auction through till early afternoon. After the auction we work on post sales and collections. I’ll try and pop out at some point and grab a coffee at my favourite local Hobba.

FRIDAY: On Friday’s we start consigning again for the following week as well as helping clients with their collections. It’s nice to chat with clients about their purchases and see what interesting pieces we have coming in for the following week.
