Collections to Covet Every unique jewellery collection is inextricably enmeshed with each collector’s identity. In the world of jewellery collecting, the most personal of collecting spheres, the genesis that gives rise to any captivating, enlightening, inspiring collection is most likely found in that one single, long coveted, achingly desired piece. We are delighted to present two exciting private collections as part of the June Fine Jewels & Timepieces auction. Both reveal that the owners were drawn to a certain style, period or maker and that the collection has been spawned from these parameters and characteristics. The first is the Property of an International Collector, featuring bold and iconic pieces from late 20th century designers including Angela Cummings, Paloma Picasso and Van Cleef & Arpels. A striking onyx and 18ct gold collar (Lot 17) and Hydrangea brooch (Lot 12) both by Angela Cummings are amongst the highlights of this collection. The second is the Property of a Melbourne Collector, featuring predominantly European pieces of historical importance. An archeological revival gold demi-parure
(Lot 105) leads the collection, detailed throughout with fine enamel work. The suite presents in exceptional condition and is attributed to master 19th century French goldsmith Eugène Fontenay. Another desirable highlight for devotees of the Art Nouveau movement, is an important plique-ajour brooch by Belgian jeweller Philippe Wolfers and an intricately detailed enamel, pearl and diamond pendant by Lucien Falize. 20th century art collector Jean Willy Mestach once advised collectors “to assemble rather than collect… thinking of the collection as a whole, as a work of art in itself.” After cataloguing these two distinct collections, it is obvious that these stylish, informed and confident collectors have managed to assemble pieces that serve as a natural extension of their discerning and sophisticated aesthetic. The contents of these two collections, along with the numerous pieces in the June auction, have enough variety to suit the diverse tastes of our most discerning new and seasoned jewellery collectors alike. Philippe Wolfers 1858-1929 was one of the leading exponents of the Art Nouveau movement. From 1892 he was at the helm of the family atelier Wolfers Freres, which produced jewels for several of the European royal courts. Influenced by the mania for all things Japanese that was to take hold in Europe in the 1880s and 1890s, Wolfers embraced the ideas and concepts of Art Nouveau enthusiastically creating metamorphoses between animal and plant kingdoms. Like his contemporary Rene Lalique, Philippe Wolfers, held a fascination for the natural world illustrated in the recurring motifs of insects, birds and flora which appear in his jewellery. $20,000-25,000
