The Art of the Estimate
- A Guide for Sellers The estimate, that spread of numbers more bluntly. Without harmony between fresh and enthusiastic buying audience and completely unproven, that I think illustrates designed to assist the buyer by providing these elements you run the risk of an item is now at the mercy of the haggle. Two paths the downside of over-pricing an item at an anticipated purchase price, is probably being offered that is not aligned to market tend to result; either the seller insists on their auction. Assume the item in question has a the least understood element in auction expectations. And why I hear some of you unrealistic pre-auction figure and walks away fair market value of $10,000 but the seller marketing. Forty or so years ago it was in asking is that important? Two important with their unsold item or they concede to the insists on a $13,000 reserve because “that’s far less use and prospective buyers were reasons really. Firstly, experience shows now usually discounted offer (sometimes what they want”. It goes to auction and presumed to have the skill set or the contacts that items that are sensibly estimated attract less than what the market at auction would inevitably fails to sell. Now at this point the or the favour of the auction house to glean more buyers and more interest almost every have paid) and feel flat about the whole seller decides usually to entertain a sensible what the likely selling price would be. Now time - while the auctioneer cannot guarantee selling process, usually forgetting that before offer which surprise, surprise is the $10,000 however it is an essential part of cataloguing that outcome every time they can guarantee they committed to auction the valuer was figure that the auctioneer originally advised. that brings together the valuation expertise that a conservatively estimated item will gently advising them on a different and more The problem now however is that the item is of the auction house, the expectations of more often than not “fly” (industry speak attractive estimate. So what can potential now unsold, unwanted and not on the radar the seller and hopefully what the market is for bidding exceeding estimates). Secondly sellers learn from this scenario that plays of the entire buying audience, it is rather on generally saying about the value of the item and really an extension of the first answer, itself out at every auction in every corner the radar of the vulture. The vulture does - I say generally because cherry-picking the by definition an over-priced item will most of the world and has been for the best part not pay the reasonable price, the vulture highest price ever for an item is not reflecting likely fail to sell at auction and then generate of 200 years? I think simply this. While the pays a discount to the reasonable price and the dependable value of an item at auction; additional dilemmas for the disappointed auctioneer can’t “crystal-ball” the

one of the most human of mistakes that many seller. These dilemmas are that now it is an result in advance for the seller it can be stated with some degree of disappointment. And prospective sellers still make or insist on item that the market views as “unwanted”. with confidence that almost every time a what the auctioneer says, and I’ve said it making! If there is harmony in these three Just as significantly the item, during the well-priced item comes to auction it sells and myself many times, is that they wish the seller elements (also described as a conservative post-auction phase, now falls victim to the often sells very well and this is the leap had listened to them in the first place because estimate) then 90% of the time you have “vulture mentality” whereby it has lost the of faith that I advise sellers to engage in trusting the valuer will almost always insure the makings of an attractively priced item appeal of the general audience and now when they are coming to market with their you against the vagaries of discounted sales underpinned by objective criteria that will gained the eye of the bargain-hunter. At this collection or single item. Finally I will leave after a failed auction. attract the market, or the buyers to put it point the item has waved “goodbye” to its sceptical readers with a simple scenario,

ProJeCT FIVe CHArITY AUCTIoN The recent Project Five Charity Auction, which was held in the foyer of the spectacular Southern Tower at Darling Quarter, was a huge success. TV and Radio presenter, Fenella Kernebone, was MC for the night and Leonard Joel’s Sydney-based Senior Specialist, Anne Phillips, was the auctioneer. After a flurry of spirited bidding, the four art works on offer raised $15,700 for ICE (Information and Cultural Exchange), an organisation which provides digital arts programmes for artistic youth in Western Sydney. Project Five has raised a total of $68,300 for ICE to date. Adnate’s powerful depiction of a boy he met while visiting a remote Indigenous community in Northern Australia attracted the interest of numerous bidders and eventually sold for $5,000. Numskull’s distinctive style was familiar to many, because he recently designed

colourful meditation on the relationship between people and their possessions achieved $2,900. Rone’s painting inspired a spate of competitive bidding before fetching a final selling price of $5,600. Jodee Knowles’ work also attracted a great deal of attention, with MC Fenella Kernebone even putting in a few bids, before being defeated by another motivated collector, who secured it at $2,200.
