MODERN A U C T I O N T H U R S D AY 1 3 N O V E M B E R AT 6 . 3 0 P M
Leonard Joel in conjunction with the Modern Design department is proud to present one of the most comprehensive Australian collections of vintage fashion by the renowned Italian designer, Emilio Pucci (1914-1992). Covering key periods from the 1950s through to the 1970s, the collection includes iconic designs from the famous 1960s silk jersey psychedelic printed shift dresses, through to terry velvet beach capes, swimwear, bags, silk scarves, ties and other ephemera. Pucci was known as ‘The Prince of Prints’ - his designs were worn by high society figures and film stars from Elizabeth Taylor to the unforgettable Marilyn Monroe, who was actually buried in her favourite Pucci dress. Pucci’s designs combined luxurious fabrics with extravagant, vibrantly coloured prints. It was the prints themselves that were most groundbreaking - his colour palettes, quirky patterns and bold designs were exceptional. Pucci’s use of silk stretch fabrics showed an intuitive understanding of the female form - subtle yet at the same time seductive and exciting. This rare assemblage has been lovingly collected over the past 20 years by a single owner based in Melbourne. Highlights from the collection include a 1960s silk jersey printed pant-suit, reputed to have belonged to one of Cary Grant’s wives; air hostess uniforms for the American Braniff Airlines and an original letter from Pucci to one of his clients, signed in pen. The collection also features several outrageous capes and incredible silk jersey dresses, even some early labels from the ‘Emilio of Capri’ collection. There is also a silk blouse of the same type worn by Samantha (Kim Cattrall) in an episode of Sex and the City, as well as unopened Vivara perfumes, still in their original silk Pucci covered boxes. The gentlemen won’t miss out either, with a selection men’s printed silk ties to choose from and a luxurious burnt orange velvet Ermenegildo Zegna designed blazer with Pucci printed lining. This truly is a once in a lifetime vintage collection - items such as these will never be available at the same time again!

SYDNEY JEWELS & OBJETS D’Art
F
or me now the picture is complete. After the great success of our inaugural Sydney ‘Jewels & Objets D’Art’ auction in August I immediately began thinking, “what next”? Right from the concept stage of the
Leonard Joel Sydney office it has been my ambition to present our loyal Sydney
clients a petit version, encompassing all departments, of the types of treasures and collections that Leonard Joel has to offer but with a strong focus on Fine Jewellery and Wristwatches. But equally and in conjunction with 69 John St Fine Art Specialists, that have curated the art component of this auction, I feel I have succeeded in bringing you the myriad of categories that Leonard Joel has to offer. While always difficult to narrow down, my favourite items in this auction are not necessarily the most costly ones either. Lot 39 intrigues me; an intricately designed miniature pistol charm that actually fires a silver bullet, in the most gentle of fashion of course! In our decorative arts section I love lot 234, the bronze and ivory ‘Royal Page’ figure, simply for its whimsy and lot 330, the Roland Shakespeare Wakelin painting of a Sydney Harbour Bridge scene, so reminiscent of a simpler time but with the brooding post-war progress so present, is a work from this catalogue that I keep coming back to. The auction is unashamedly eclectic but with a strong focus on Fine Jewels, a category nationally that Leonard Joel leads the way in and I hope that there is something special here that will satisfy your personal collection. I look forward to meeting you at the viewing and that you are successful with a purchase at the auction! John D’Agata National Head of Jewellery and Sydney Office
