Collaborative by Nature

104 DAVID BROMLEY (BORN 1960) Untitled (Boy with Cigarette) acrylic on canvas 91 x 122cm $2,500-3,500

David and Yuge’s tireless passion for collecting is collaborative by nature but also reflects their disparate tastes. Both express their intentions for collecting as thus: “to bring magic into the everyday.” They achieve this by consolidating their diverse passions into a holistic and engaging context: for “making art, creating things, decorating, and finding treasures for others to enjoy.” This world comes alive when you explore their shop, your aesthetic appreciation 20 A TAXIDERMIED FOX 39h x 19w x 77d $300-500

heightened as you peruse the various treasures in an environment that is idiosyncratic in layout and design. In this context, you become more privy to the said “magic” of their process. We hope you can take the opportunity to explore their collection at Chapel Street, to experience this unique world of Yuge and David Bromley. Calum Alexander

Surreal Harmony

David and Yuge’s site in Daylesford is distinctively engaging because it forms an exciting context for their collection. This is found in David’s studio, where you are privy to the wondrous processes behind his art-making, the gallery spaces of his art and others, and the warehouses filled with various treasures that both have collected over the years. It is not often that you get to experience a collection that brings you an artistic vision of how an eclectic range of art and furniture can evoke an atmosphere 106 FOUR PLASTER FACE MOTIFS IN THE STYLE OF FORNASETTI 31 x 21cm each $300-500

These are examples of what David and Yuge state as their intention to bring “magic into the everyday.” They would like to awaken these aesthetic experiences in a day-to-day, living context, and Daylesford goes a long way in demonstrating this multi-dimensional passion of theirs. Art market confidence Our second Fine Art auction for the year demonstrated

the

sustained

growth

in

confidence in the art market. In-room, online, and telephone bidding was in full swing with many lots creating a competitive drive between bidders. This was most ambitiously seen with our cover image Night Flowers by Charles Blackman (lot 58). The painting, directly from Barbara Blackman herself, skyrocketed on the night. As the lot was introduced several hands shot up with great speed and clear determination creating an exciting spectacle for the remaining bystanders and leading to an enthralling duel between a telephone and in room bidder, reaching an impressive $76,860 IBP. This duelling also reached beyond Australian shores, none more so than for the impressive Cheong Soo Pieng mixed media work (lot 120). Not only did the work hail from a Canadian vendor, but the interested parties extended throughout Asia showcasing huge international interest finally selling at $73,200 IBP. The increasing diversity of our Fine Art auctions can be seen in the strength of the contemporary CHARLES BLACKMAN (born 1928) Night Flowers c.1964 oil on canvas 73 x 63cm

art results. Annette Bezor (lot 43) was not only a favourite in the viewing period but was a strong contender in the sale selling above estimate at

$17,080 IBP. Solid results were achieved for the more classic artists on offer. Kenneth Jack’s monumental triptych, Port Albert, Victoria (lot 33) set a record for a watercolour by the artist and was his 5th highest result at auction reaching $36,600 IBP. The auction demonstrated pronounced support for other classic artists including Albert Namatjira (lot 28) selling above higher estimate for $26,840 IBP and Ida Rentoul Outhwaite (lot 11) continuing to show the post-GFC lift in the artist’s prices selling mid-estimate for $15,860 IBP. Watches under the hammer At Leonard Joel we have seen strong growth in watch collecting and the areas of interest have never been more diverse. There are those who will only purchase particular brands such as Rolex, Omega, Longines, Patek Philippe etc. and seek the rarest models, both contemporary and vintage. Others focus on periods and types like Art Deco platinum and diamond, early digital or 50’s Swiss mechanical, to name a few. Some collectors may restrict themselves to only perfect originals, whereas others prefer a project piece they can restore and enjoy wearing. Globally, investing in watches has been booming with strong returns at the top of the market. These high-end luxury investments are made by connoisseurs and wealthy investors who appreciate the engineering and craftsmanship. Some will also enjoy wearing them as a reflection of taste. All wish to exploit the potential increase in value that the finest and rarest examples may achieve when put back on the market. If you are looking to buy or sell a watch at auction, Leonard Joel offers a variety of sales, some dedicated exclusively to watches and others which include watches as ‘part auctions’ with our luxury items. The estimate we publish in the catalogue for the sale is primarily determined by the quality, rarity and collectability of the time piece. To ascertain this, previous auction records and current availability of comparable watches are considered. Careful attention A ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL DAY DATE II PLATINUM AND DIAMOND WRISTWATCH

SOLD $46,360 IBP

is paid to assessing condition, looking for replaced parts or dial repaints, etc. These changes are important determinants in achieving a good hammer price. Modifications and issues found by Leonard Joel are disclosed to buyers on the condition report. When purchasing a watch at auction you can purchase knowing that the watch, if branded, will be a genuine item. As with all items sold at Leonard Joel, we stand by our catalogue descriptions. However, it is important to remember that there are no guarantees as to a timepiece’s working condition. Under no circumstances will a watch purchase be refunded if not keeping time or working after purchase. Leonard Joel is happy to provide a condition report prior to the auction. We recommend all watches purchased are taken to a horologist to be serviced and timed. The best watches consigned are generally offered in the quarterly Jewels auction. The Thursday Jewellery auctions have an eclectic range of wristwatches, covering the spectrum of watch collecting interests and price points. We also hold thematic and ‘single owner’ watch and timepiece auctions throughout the year. It is unpredictable what might be offered as it is all dependant on the watches consigned from sale to sale. If you are looking to buy a watch for your everyday use or a special timepiece, or looking to create a collection you should consider all the Jewellery auction catalogues as interesting pieces may be consigned at any time. All Leonard Joel catalogues are available online and the pieces can be physically viewed prior to the auction. A good way to stay informed about upcoming auctions is via the website auction calendar. If you find a watch that may be of interest please come in for a closer inspection and discuss condition with our team. If you can’t come in, feel free to contact one of our specialists who can provide further details. If you are looking to have a watch appraised for auction, please contact me directly.

Hot Lots & Auction Buzz The collection of Warehouse 8 Interiors was auctioned off on Sunday 5th June. The extensive range of pieces in the auction allowed something for everybody. Many of the items featured in the highlights catalogue were hot lots and created a buzz on the day. The extraordinary life sized statue of Jesus with it ornate carving and polychrome finish sold for $12,200 IBP and the always popular Grant Featherston R160 contour chair realised $6100 BP. Other highlights included a beautiful example of 1960s Danish design, a Koford IB Larsen sideboard. With its rosewood finish and fully fitted interior, a result of $9,150 IBP was a steal considering how rare these pieces have become. The lovely collection of Australian Indigenous artwork was also a highlight in the collection with Lily Kelly Napangardi’s Songline Tali realising $2,684 IBP. Overall the auction results were a testament to the quality of this vast collection of rare and loved pieces.
