A new method of engagement: Real-time specialist consultations via Facetime Our second quarterly auction for 2017 has provided yet another opportunity to reflect on the ways in which our clients engage with the ever-changing art market. The rise of the digital world and the accessibility to various forms of communication has enhanced the demand to ‘connect’ for a new generation of collectors. This was most prevalent in our recent quarterly evening auction, held on Tuesday 6 June. With a large crowd in the sale room and a flurry of activity on the phone, banks, local, interstate and international buyers showed interest across a wide range of traditional and contemporary art. Invaluable bidders also proved to be strong contenders, with several lots selling to online DAVID BOYD (1924-2011) Untitled 1973 oil on canvas 53 x 64cm
buyers. Key results from the auction included Lot 1 by David Boyd, far exceeding the auction high estimate and hammering $23,560 IBP. Buyers
SOLD $23,560 IBP
also showed strong interest in Skipping Girl by Herman Pekel, which hammered well above estimate at $8,680 IBP. Contemporary artists were strongly represented in the sale, with Lot 32 by Jon Cattapan hammering $16,120 IBP. The top result for the evening, however, went to the captivating blue-toned work by highly sought after Singaporean artist, Cheong Soo Pieng. Two overseas clients remained on the phone lines for the work, which hammered $99,200 IBP. While there are many ways to bid at auction, the viewing period is a time when we are continually encountering new ways to connect with clients. From social media to e-blasts, there are a multitude of ways to engage. In a newly offered

unique platform provided prospective interstate buyers with a detailed overview of works, while simultaneously being able to speak directly to our specialists. Following a consultation, one particular client was offered a private telephone line to bid in the sale, subsequently winning the lot on the night. So, no matter where you’re based, the Art team at Leonard Joel is on hand to answer questions and personally guide you through our auctions. We look forward to seeing you in September! Emily Sinclair

It was a privilege to be part of this Australian auction industry first. To work so closely with Opera Australia, their expert teams and their exquisite costumes, many of which represent unique moments in Australian Operatic and design history, has been an honour. I am very pleased that 90% of the collection found new homes with institutions and private collectors, with many pieces now bound for permanent exhibition for all to enjoy.

JOHN ALBRECHT
This was not just an auction but more an experience for me, one that I am very sure I will never forget. Conducting the first museum-quality costume auction in Australia was a thrill. It was an honour to have been selected by Opera Australia for the task and creating a serious auction market in Australia for this collecting category is something Leonard Joel is very proud of. Opera Australia, and its team of extraordinarily talented and personable people, is passion in practice as I describe it and my team and I are enriched for the experience.

among the most intriguing pieces to come through our auction rooms, unparalleled in their exquisite detail, and increasingly sought after as decorative objects. In 2010, Leonard Joel was fortunate enough to host an auction of over 100 de-accessioned nautical pieces from the National Trust of Australia, including shipbuilder’s models, marine instruments, maritime artworks, ship plaques and uniforms. Among the many standout pieces in that auction were a model of the S.S. Gracchus, which sold for $5,520, a model of the HMS Endeavour, which sold for $6,600 and a model of the HMS Oberon, which sold for $7,800. In the years that have followed, Leonard Joel has continued to demonstrate strong selling results for model ships, including the sale of an important live steam model of the Charlotte Dundas for $85,400 IBP in 2012.
