“When I worked in England I made gouache paintings outside, mainly in Sussex, which is very lush. For every painter who sat down or stood up to paint in England everything was symmetrical. 124 ATTRIBUTED TO DANILA VASSILIEFF (1897-1958) (Melbourne Church) c.1939 oil on board unsigned 38 x 50cm PROVENANCE: The Estate of Marian Hunt, Melbourne Daughter to Ivan and Lilias, Marian Hunt (1922-2015) was a renowned cellist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and later as a respected music teacher. LITERATURE: St. John Moore, F., Vassilieff and His Art, Oxford University Press, Melbourne, 1982, p.43 “Danila Vassilieff had friends among conservative Russian families; sang bass in the choir at the Russian Orthodox Church [and] mixed with members of the Basil’s Covent Garden Ballet Company during their Melbourne seasons.” $10,000-15,000

According to Hunt family history, this painting depicted a Melbourne church and whilst so far the ability to attribute it to a particular establishment has proven elusive, there is the strong possibility it at least references a Russian building. Danila Vassilieff, known to sing in a church choir, lived only a short walk from the bluestone St Saviours Church of England at 6 Oxford Street, Collingwood which by the 1950s had transferred ownership to the Holy Virgins Protection Russian Orthodox Church. The bluestone church is in the Gothic Revival style, however its entry does feature one large doorway and two windows, suggesting that, if it is the aforesaid building, Vassilieff took some artistic licence.

“Manzu was fascinated with erotic female figures, who were intended to titillate male viewers with a youthful sensuality. Although many of Manzu’s young women and girls have names, others are nameless models whose very anonymity removes any sense of male guilt from their adoration. Throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s, Manzu reproducted the delicate dance called “Striptease” in drawings and sculptures.” R. BRETTELL
