Retford Park, Bowral
Foreword
The Philanthropist and Connoisseur So much has been written about the Fairfax family and story that for me it is as though I have been invited inside a discreet aspect of Australian social history. My first drive to Retford Park, with its beautiful English-inspired gardens and Victorian Italianate mansion that greeted me, belied the truly diverse, international and complex nature of James Fairfax’s collecting style. As the appointed auctioneer it is my privilege to be managing this private collection for the estate and I feel very lucky indeed to be part of what is essentially the “collecting” chapter of the biography of this great Australian. Now with this auction, his life of connoisseurship finds its ultimate philanthropic expression.

This creature had the form of a horse, the head of a dragon and the scales of a fish. The markings on its back inspired him to invent the eight trigrams, which led to the invention of writing, depicted by the books bound to the
mythical horse’s back. Later writings described the creature as having the essence of heaven and earth, with the form of a horse and the scales of a dragon, such as represented by the present lot, and it was said to appear when a sage ruled the land. The design is referred to as haima (sea horse). They were valuable animals, sought after for their reliability to courier men and merchandise along the silk route as the ‘ships of the desert’. Private gentlemen of means often kept camels as a sign of their wealth and position. Tomb figures such as this camel were used by the imperial elite to provide for the afterlife. On the shoulders of the robe are the sun and the moon, on the front panel above the dragon is a constellation, below that is the fu symbol and the axe head, representing the power to judge and punish respectively, further down is the seaweed, to represent purity, and a pair of sacrificial cups, for filial piety. On the back above the dragon is a motif of mountains, and also the entwined dragons and golden pheasant for adaptability and literary refinement, above a flame motif for wisdom, and the millet symbol to represent the wearer of the garment’s ability to feed his people. The use of white thread lifts the embroidered billowing waves and creates an illusion of life and movement. The robe shines with the lustre of the finest silken threads. This robe is lined with imperial yellow silk, mounted in a perspex case measuring 230 width x 16 depth x 183cm height PROVENANCE: Purchased: Linda Wrigglesworth, London, Irving Galleries, 1991, 4045 Catalogue No. 137 EXHIBITIONS: Art Gallery of New South Wales, Celestial Silks, Chinese Religious Court Textiles, 31 August - 24 October, 2004, illus. catalogue no. 27 LITERATURE: This robe has appeared in several journal articles.

OTHER NOTES: Blue robes were worn by the emperor at events associated with Heaven. The emperor, possibly Huangdi would have worn this robe during the day of the ceremony taking place at the Temple of heaven. Here, the emperor would pray for rains and an excellent harvest. For centuries, the ‘twelve symbols’ were associated with the principal annual sacrifices offered by the emperor on behalf of the people at the great imperial alters. The official would wear this hat when wearing his chaofu robe and piling collar. The hat is covered with a red flossed silk instead of the traditional tassels. A centrally placed (simulated) pearl on the rim indicates the front of the hat, with green peking glass plume holder. The hat with original box. Hats of this style rarely appear on the market. The laws pertaining to the jewelled hats were written in 1636. The jewel on these hats closely resembles the lamaist stone called Rdo-rje ‘master’ stone, symbolising a pure mind, the gem capable of cutting through any substance, but which itself could not be penetrated. Many priests of the lamaist church wore hats surmounted by such ‘master stones’.

209 A CHINESE LANDSCAPE PAINTING, HANGING SCROLL, MING DYNASTY (1368-1644), 15TH CENTURY ZHE SCHOOL Daijin School also known as Zhe School, Ming Dynasty The painting depicts a travelling scholar-gentleman crossing a bridge at day’s end, sitting astride his weary horse, his head turned back from where he has travelled, perhaps symbolising an air of nostalgia for days passed. He is followed closely by an attendant on foot carrying a jar of wine and a wrapped box of food. His destination is the rustic country house of a recluse scholar or artist. A peasant dressed in a red garment, stands expectantly at the gate. The food and drink being carried is to nourish a conversation far from the busy world. Two pine trees, possibly symbolising the two friends, dominate the foreground, the painting measuring 160cm x 95cm PROVENANCE: Purchased in 1992, from Three Dynasties gallery, Kyoto; Ex Togendo Collection, Japan

OTHER NOTES: As a young man, the artist Daijin, Founder of the Zhe School, travelled to the Nanjing capital, with his father, where he failed to make a name for himself so returned home. Where his reputation grew such that c. 1425 he was recommended to the Xuande Emperor (r. 1425-35), and he went to Beijing in the hope of securing an academy appointment. His plans were thwarted, however, by the envy of the established painter Xie Huan (fl c. 1368-1435), a favourite artist and adviser to the Xuande Emperor, who claimed to detect anti-government bias in Dai’s works. Xie took offence to Dai’s depiction of a fisherman wearing a red coat, an attire suitable for officials, but certainly not for commoners. The Xuande Emperor agreed with Xie, and according to the scholar Lang Ying, the eunuch responsible for recommending Dai was executed. Dai, however, escaped at night to Hangzhou and returned to the Zhe academy afterwards. It is interesting to note that there is a commoner dressed in red in this work as well. $5,000-8,000 明十五世紀,山水畫 立軸 估價: $5,000-8,000
210 A FINE CHINESE PAINTING OF AN EAGLE, HANGING SCROLL, EARLY 17TH CENTURY, ANONYMOUS, AFTER WEN TONG (1019-1079), FRAMED The eagle is perched standing alone on a mountain peak near a cascading waterfall, the calligraphy to the upper right, translation, ‘painted by Wen Tong, an eagle stands alone’. The monochrome ink palette, suggestive of symbolising the integrity of a principled Confucian scholar, the painting measuring 160cm x 103cm PROVENANCE: Ex Collection of Connoisseur and Collector, the British Heiress Lady Ann Juliet Dorothea Maud Tadgell, formerly Lady Juliet de Chair, Somerset; Purchased from Michael Leach Gallery, London, 1986 OTHER NOTES: The eagle in Chinese art represents boldness and the character ‘ying’ is homophonous with the word for hero. The popular depiction in painting of an eagle standing alone, is a rebus for ‘yingxiong duli’, meaning ‘a hero who stands alone is peerless’. It alludes to a poem from the Yuan dynasty referring to the scholar-officials who were not willing to bow to foreign rulers, even at the cost of their political advancement. $5,000-8,000 明晚期清早期十七世紀早期 無名氏鷹畫像 立軸帶框 估價: $5,000-8,000

THE SPIRIT OF DE MINIMIS On 1st January 2017 Leonard Joel activated its voluntary policy position (VPP) on the cessation of rhinoceros horn and elephant ivory trade. As part of this VPP we agreed to not only immediately cease all trade in rhino horn, regardless of age, but also cease trade on January 1st 2019 in all ivory that did not fall under the De Minimis principle. This principle’s central purpose is to remove from the market place all ivory except those items where the ivory component is so small or insignificant that its presence could not reasonably be seen to be contributing to maintaining value in, or creating a market for, ivory. This principle follows the recent USA legislation, one of the aims of which is to remove from trade all voluminous ivory from the market place in an effort to disrupt the value of the material and make it much more difficult for new ivory to find its way on to the market place. The legislation is inspired by the understanding that when the bulk of ivory is removed from market circulation, it disrupts value, which disrupts demand, which in turn will disrupt supply and positively impact on poaching and hopefully, inevitably end the slaughter. Equally, the principle as interpreted by Leonard Joel, respects the incidental, ancillary or insignificant use of pre-1975 ivory as decoration within the decorative arts and in the process strikes some balance with the antiques trade and collecting community. In this sense, the parallel aim of the Leonard Joel policy is to enable the continued trade in objects where the ivory component is integral but so insignificant that it cannot be meaningfully contributing to maintaining the value or trade in ivory. Our definition of De Minimis does not allow the trade in all antique or small ivory objects but we believe in our hearts that our definition optimises the policy to ensure the integrity of the goal is upheld. And that goal is to disrupt the value in ivory while respecting the incidental, ancillary or insignificant use of ivory within the decorative arts. Our detailed policy position is available for download on our website and if you believe, like we do, that this trade needs to end, please encourage other auctioneers and traders to embrace our position. This gilt bronze sculpture by the artist Chiparus containing incidental ivory elements is an example of an item that would not be affected by the De Minimis principle.
