2 A FRENCH CONICAL PENDULUM MYSTERY CLOCK EUGENE CORNU, PARIS, CIRCA 1875 The classically draped silvered bronze angel raising both hands to support the pendulum, bearing a bouquet of gilt flowers aloft. The angel stands on a gilt bronze bed of clouds, all above an alabaster base colourfully inset with champleve enamel plaques, and raised on six gilded paw shaped feet. The circular dial features a gilded chapter ring with Roman numerals and within the centre of the dial the movement is skeletonised. Signed Eug. Cornu 24 BT Des Italiens Paris on dial, inner ring. 11 A LOUIS XV MANTLE CLOCK BAPTISTE BAILLON, CIRCA 1755 The fire gilt case with a reclining bronzed cherub seated on closed book looking at a parchment scroll. The case surmounted by a rampant cockerel standing on a severed human head. The white enamel dial with inner ring of Roman numerals and an outer ring of Arabic numerals in multiples of five for the minutes. Assymetrical winding holes, dial signed Baptiste Baillon. Eight day bell striking movement with twin going barrels, anchor escapement with altered silk suspension. 33 cm height, 30 cm width, 13 cm depth OTHER NOTES: The Baillon family of clockmakers was prominent in Paris during the 18th century. This clock is probably by Jean-Baptiste Baillon III, the most famous member of the family and a leading clockmaker in Paris. He was received as a master clockmaker in 1727. He made many clocks for the Royal family and became Premier Valet de Chambre de la Reine before 1748 and Valet de Chambre Horloger Ordinaire de la Dauphine Marie Antoinette in 1770. He set up a private factory in his home at SaintGermain-en-Laye producing watches, clocks and gold boxes until 1765. $4,000-5,000

41 A RARE FRENCH MANTLE CLOCK, ‘THE MONITOR’ CIRCA 1875 Impressionist model of the USS Monitor, built during the American Civil War 1862, which was an iron clad ship with a rotating gun turret designed to float semi submerged. A rare French brass and silvered brass eight day clock in the form of ‘The Monitor’ with two thermometers, a barometer, revolving gun turret and a propeller which turns with the turret. The vessel has funnels, air vents, deck ladders, lifeboat and ships wheel compass. The model is mounted on a plinth of cast waves. All mounted on an oval onyx marble base 37 cm height, 58 cm width, 22 cm depth $40,000-50,000

When music plays, the figure stands upright and then kneels at the altar in front of him. The left hand of the figure moves with two actions. The right hand has six movements enabling the figure to cross himself and pray at various times with nodding of head and movement of mouth. All performance takes place with hymns being played on a four tune musical box. The case with full length pierced side frets with a pair of pierced gilt brass sound frets to the top corners of arched front door. Stop fluted front corners to full height door. Moulded vase supported on gilt brass feet. The arched painted dial with allegorical scenes and automotive figures operated by movement. A smaller break arch, silver framed dial located centrally in the painted dial. The clock with Roman and Arabic chapter ring framed by silver mounts and pierced door spandrels. Above the chapter ring are two subsidiary dials for rise and fall regulation and pendulum lock. Below centre arbour a curved calendar aperture, engraved day disc in arch. He, like many others was drawn to Australia by the Gold Rush and arrived in Adelaide in 1854. He soon after settled in Melbourne, and then in 1862 he moved to Beechworth, where he commenced his own business as a watchmaker and gold buyer. His skill in practical horology was evinced in a clock of his own design and manufacture, which was exhibited at the first Melbourne Exhibition in 1856, and which afterwards, formed a prominent attraction in the window of his business on Ford street. Buyer’s Premium There will be a buyer’s premium added to all purchases. The buyer’s premium will be calculated at the rate of 24% of the hammer price on each lot. This is inclusive of GST. The buyer’s premium is reflected by a reduction in the Seller’s Commission and is a common practice throughout Australia and overseas. Property subject to the Artist Resale Royalty Lots with the § sign will be subject to payment of the Artist Resale Royalty in the event that the lot is sold for a hammer price of $1,000 or more. The Australian Resale Royalty is a flat rate of 5 percent (5%) levy on the hammer price (including GST). The Australian Resale Royalty is payable by the buyer in addition to the buyer’s premium plus applicable GST. Damage Any viewer who damages a Lot will be held liable for all damage caused and shall reimburse Leonard Joel for all costs and expenses relating to rectification of such damage. Warranties and Condition Reports. Condition reports will be available for any lot upon request, subject to conditions. Estimates Estimates are a reflection of Leonard Joel’s opinion of the current market values, based on historic and current market realisations of similar lots.
