73 FOUR SILVER MOUNTED COCONUT CUPS & TWO GOBLETS 18TH / 19TH CENTURIES Comprising three cups raised on three hoof feet, two inset with oval mounts bearing crests. OTHER NOTES: Coconut cups have been popular in Western Europe from the late 15th and 16th centuries, transported from India, as well as South American and the West Indies, particularly by the Spanish and Portuguese. Drinking from a coconut cup was believed to cure all sorts of ailments such as fever, kidney failure and tapeworm. They were not only restorative, but thought to have aphrodisiac powers. $1,000-2,000

215 (Part 1 of 2) TWO FINE ENGLISH NEEDLEWORK WALL HANGINGS CIRCA 1871 Each wall hanging comprising individual needlework panels, all intialled by each maker, depicting various personalised scenes Each 230cm long approximately PROVENANCE: These wall hangings were a wedding present for a prominent English family who relocated to Mackay Queensland in the 1800’s. They belonged to Winifred and Charles Rawson. The family owned textile mills in the UK and these hangings were designed by many individuals including family members who worked at the mill. Charles and his brother were cousins of the late Admiral Sir Harry Rawson Governor of New South Wales and Admiral Collinson of exploring fame. Dame Nellie Melba was also a personal friend of Charles and Winifred and spent time residing with them in Australia. The Rawson brothers, Charles Collinson Rawson, Edmund Rawson and Lancelot Rawson established the cattle station “The Hollow” on the Pioneer River at Mackay in 1866. The Rawsons were also involved in the sugar and coal industries. Charles Rawson was also an active figure in the North Queensland Separation movement. In 1877 and 1878 Rawson went on expeditions to Mt. Dalrymple. The name of the Rawson’s is closely associated with the early history of Mackay right back in fact to the first days when settlement was taking place. In 1882 Charles’ brother Edward became Mayor of Mackay Qld. $3,000-4,000

E N G L I S H D E C O R AT I V E A R T S 260 AN UNUSUAL JACOBEAN OAK TWO TIER STANDING BUFFET 17TH CENTURY, CIRCA 1615 The rectangular table top incised with floriate motifs, raised by four heavily carved legs united by a lower shelf. The buffet has been adapted, with the removal of upper supports and upper gallery, and later edition of leaf tip carved pelmet. The back panel has been elaborately carved with an allegorical scene of The War of the Roses in the centre, bordered by an alternating rose motif and flanked by classically inspired Chimera Caryatids. The panel is inscribed Anthony Grey Magdalen 1615. Anthony Grey (1557-

1643) married his wife Magdalene in the late 16th century. By 1639 Anthony had succeeded his father as Earl Of Kent and remained so until his death. The Grey family were a baronial family whose bloodline held the Earl of Kent title from 1420-1740. They rose to greater prominence during the Wars of the Roses. Edmund Grey, Lord Grey of Ruthin, started out a Lancastrian, but switched to the Yorkist side at the Battle of Northampton. In this scene we see the prominent rose, being the white rose of Yorkshire. 149.5cm high, 136cm wide and 65cm deep
OTHER NOTES: The Wars of the Roses (1455–1487) was a series of civil wars, fought over the throne of England, between supporters of the House of Lancaster and supporters of the House of York. Both houses were branches of the Plantagenet royal house, tracing their descent from King Edward III. The House of Lancaster, associated with a red rose, and the House of York, whose symbol was a white rose, hence the name War of the Roses. $1,500-2,500

The swiveling rectangular top is green felt lined to the reverse and opens to reveal an interior fitted for game related accessories. OTHER NOTES: This sculpture was part of a series presented by Ricketts at his Mount Dandenong gallery, titled ‘Legends of Australian Aborigines sculptured in clay. 180 A FINE STERLING SILVER AND MALACHITE INK STAND BY JULIUS SCHOMBURGK, RETAILED BY J.M.WENDT, CIRCA 1870 The shaped rectangular black marble base inset with a malachite veneered border, centred by a malachite box surmounted by a silver figure of an Indigenous Australian male, flanked by a pair of silver-lidded cut glass inkwells with cockatoo finials, supported by four lion-paw feet, hallmarked ‘JM Wendt, Adelaide’, anchor and a lion passant 22 cm high, 26 cm wide
PROVENANCE: Purchased by the current vendors grandmother in Adelaide in 1943 OTHER NOTES: Schomburgk’s commissions for Wendt were some of the finest and most expensive pieces in the retailer’s inventory. An ink stand of similar design is held in the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide. In the 1860s malachite in Australia was mined at Burra Burra, and Australian silver with malachite mounts is generally always by an Adelaide maker. $25,000-35,000
