Our next stop takes us into the collection of Dr. Erich Lubbert and continues across the next two generations. Lubbert was a German industrialist and lawyer through the 20th century who eventually followed the mining trade to South West Africa. The family’s collection (lots 103-109) culminates with its most contemporary piece by South African Postwar painter, Keith Alexander. Near Sesriem c.1982, lot 104, captures the quiet grandeur of one of the most desolate places on earth - the Namib.

THE ESTATE OF JAMES FORD STRACHAN IV LOTS 17-27
The original Woolstores (Wool Warehouse) of James Ford Strachan - constructed in Stone and the initial residence of JF.
Australia’s history is rich with stories of settlers seeking refuge, fortune, and their own piece of “the land of promise”. Wool production remains one of Australia’s largest and most important forms of land use, attracting individuals from afar to reap the benefits. One such individual was the Honorary James Ford Strachan who in 1832 was one of the first English settlers in Victoria arriving in what was then Van Diemen’s Land. Victorian locals may know the Strachan family name well, with a strong presence in the Western District through Strachan and Co. Limited, Aitken Walker Strachan, and the Geelong Club. J.F. Strachan was responsible for the erection of the first brick house in Melbourne, and the first stone building in Geelong. Across the generations, the Strachan’s continue to hold a significant place within Victorian society and the state’s history. James Ford Strachan III and IV developed a passion for art, collecting paintings that depicted their bountiful landscape of the Western District. There are numerous works from the Strachan family in the collections of the Geelong Club, the Melbourne Club, and the Barwon Heads Golf Club. A significant discovery among the family’s heirlooms was a work by revered Irish artist, Paul Henry. Known as the “Father of Irish Landscape Painting” Henry has become one of the most sought after 20th century post-impressionist painters in Irish art history. The discovery of this painting in Australia attests to Henry’s significance within Irish culture and art history.

“This picture is certainly the work of Paul Henry. The clouds which cover more than half the composition and his use of light are typical of Henry’s style of work. The scene in a remote area of Connemara is a tranquil one, one can see many reflections of the clouds and turf stacks in the water in the foreground.” DR. S.B. KENNEDY, JULY 2019
19 PAUL HENRY (Irish, 1877-1958) Turf Stacks in Connemara oil on canvas signed lower right: PAUL HENRY inscribed on stretcher bar verso: No. 16 Turf Stacks in Connemara 36 x 40.5cm PROVENANCE: The Estate of James Ford Strachan IV, Victoria OTHER NOTES: Leonard Joel was honoured to engage with Dr. S. B. Kennedy, the leading industry expert on Paul Henry, when researching this painting: We would like to thank Dr. S.B. Kennedy, whose writings form the basis of this catalogue entry. $60,000-80,000 -Viewing in Sydney-
Paul Henry, known as the “Father of Irish Landscape Painting”, is one of the most sought after 20th century post-impressionist painters in Irish art history. Henry began his career studying art in Belfast, before further studies at the Academie Julian and the newly founded studio of American painter James Abbott McNeil Whistler in Paris in 1898. His time in France exposed him to the art world’s most revered painters, and he was particularly inspired by Jean Francois Millet, Paul Cezanne, and Paul Gauguin. Henry’s landscape paintings depict the terrain of Ireland, reduced to its key elements of sky, cloud, bog, and turf. Turf Stacks in Connemara masterfully depicts the magnificent scenery of the Connemara wilderness. The remarkable colour harmony and creamy texture of paint are typical of the artist through the later 1920’s and 1930’s as both his mood and palette lightened. The delicacy and drama of the landscape are brought to life through the awe of the mountain range, the towering clouds somewhat ominous in construction, and the weaving curves of the bog. To some extent Henry used turf stacks to balance his works where other artists may use figures. This was a consolidation of his style which by now was fully mature.

OTHER NOTES: Beginning in 1897, Fox established a camp held every autumn at Charterisville where he and his students would spend several months painting en plein-air incorporating Impressionist practices. In the garden which sloped down to the Yarra where the light was ideal, they could paint multiple oil sketches per day, working quickly to capture the light effect. Fox placed particular emphasis on cool and warm tones, restricting the palette to no more than five colours. Many of his autumn paintings from this period were gifted to his family. $7,000-9,000

We take a look at the collection of London-born Sydney Pemberton. Pemberton accompanied his father through the 1930’s and 40’s to the exhibitions of several war artists, including Frank Brangwyn, developing a deep interest in art. He began working as a commercial artist in an advertising agency, before starting his very own, Unitam. The collection delves into Sydney’s interest in current affairs and the living British artists of his era.

Spiritual Bridge is painted in the Jogja Surrealist Style (Jogja being a shortened name for the city Yogyakarta). Whilst sharing painterly qualities with Western Surrealism, conceptually the artists associated with the Jogja Surrealist style divert from Western Surrealism by gazing at the unreal world drawn from their immediate surroundings, rather than revelling in its creation.
