The Importance of Provenance

The word provenance comes up frequently in the arts, both in the museum world and the marketplace, and for good reason too. Provenance is the recorded journey of an item from its origin through one or more owners to the present day and this lineage can lend an object important context. When selling items at auction a specialist will do their best to establish this line of ownership back as far as possible. Whilst it is not always possible to determine the path that an item has taken prior to coming to auction, when we do have that information, it can often be incredibly valuable.

In The Collector’s Auction on the 17th of September, there are a number of pieces that come with exceptional provenance.

To open we have a selection of indigenous works, including bark paintings and carved sandstone heads, from The Collection of Dr Ronald and Alison Fine. Ronald and Alison were avid collectors of Australian and international art and were generous philanthropic supporters of many NSW art institutions. They donated works to the Art Gallery of NSW, the University of NSW, and the Wollongong Art Gallery where you will find a space named in their honour. At the Art Gallery of New South Wales you will find carved sandstone heads, some donated by the Fines, by the same artists we have in our auction: Matthew Gilbert (lots 18, 19, 24), Darcy Hunter (lot 20) and Djimba Kuukuu (lot 22).

Among the decorative arts on offer you will find early English porcelain from The Dacre King Collection, with many pieces including sale receipts going back to the 1950s. A NSW government solicitor by occupation, King was a passionate collector of English 18th century antique ceramics throughout his life. Highlights include a large Worcester porcelain tankard (lot 147) and a Chelsea plate from the Duke of Cambridge Service (lot 150).

Our auction concludes with a selection of antiquities from The Collection of Royall and Susan Tyler. This collection of family possessions, largely inherited through three generations, has exceptional provenance, including some of the most reputable sources for antiquities in the 20th century such as The Brummer Gallery, Kalebdjian Frères and Dikran Kelekian. Of particular note is the provenance of several pieces from The Garrett Chatfield Pier Collection of Egyptian Antiquities which were sold at auction in New York to William Royall Tyler (1910-2003) in March 1936.

The provenance for many of the pieces in this auction not only provide prospective buyers with context for the pieces but can also provide us with a snapshot into the trends of collecting over time. As these trends change and fluctuate, the importance of provenance remains ever present.

lots 1 – 62

INCLUDING WORKS FROM THE COLLECTION OF DR RONALD AND ALISON FINE

Ronald and Alison Fine were avid collectors of Australian and international art.

From the 1970s they were close friends of Clive Evatt the founder of Sydney’s famous Hogarth Gallery in Paddington and through Evatt they grew to have a great appreciation of Aboriginal art.

They were well known for their significant philanthropic gifts of artworks to the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the University of New South Wales and to the Wollongong Gallery where a space is named in their honour.

other notes

Mickey Johnson (1834-1906), Aboriginal King of Illawarra, was one of the most famous and most photographed Aboriginal inhabitants of the Shoalhaven area in the 19th century. It is thought that he was brought to the Shoalhaven area from the Clarence River District in the 1860s by Major E. H. Weston of Albion Park. After working for Weston for approximately ten years, he moved to Kangaroo Valley with his wife Rosey. In the early 1890s, they moved to Windang on the coast at the mouth of Lake Illawarra. He was proclaimed King of the Illawarra Tribe at the Illawarra Centenary celebrations in 1896 and was

presented with an inscribed brass plate. Mickey spent his final years at the aboriginal camp on the flat at Minnamurra River near the bridge. He died in 1906 at age 72, and is buried in Kiama cemetery.

The Collection of Royall and Susan Tyler

lots 174 – 224

This collection of family possessions has largely been inherited by Royall Tyler (b.1936) from his father William Royall Tyler (1910-2003) and his grandfather, Royall Tyler (1884-1953).

Royall Tyler (1884-1953) was an American historian, diplomat, economist and collector. Although born in Massachusetts, he spent most of his life in Europe particularly in France. He met his wife, Elisina Palamidessi de Castelvecchio, in 1908 and their son William Royall Tyler was born in Paris in 1910.

Royall was fluent in French, Spanish, and German and proficient in Italian, Hungarian, and Greek. He held a number of important international government and advisory roles during his professional career. However, he was also a self-taught art historian and was particularly passionate about Byzantine art. He authored books on the subject and was instrumental in organising the first international exhibition of Byzantine art in Paris in 1931. He was widely recognised as an art connoisseur and came to advise Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss in their collecting and acquisitions. Mildred and Robert founded Dumbarton Oaks, a Harvard University research institute, library, museum and garden which holds the Bliss’ collections of Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, Asian, Islamic, and European art.

Royall and Elisina’s son, William Royall Tyler, was educated in England, graduating from Balliol College at the University of Oxford with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1933. In 1934, he married Bettine Fisher-Rowe and they had two children, Royall Tyler (b.1936) and Matilda Eve Tyler (1939-2023). William studied at Harvard University in the Fogg Art Museum’s museum studies program, receiving an MFA in 1941. He spent most of his professional life as a distinguished American diplomat, and after retirement became director of Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection from 1969 to 1977.

The Tyler family have had a long history of collecting and appreciation of the arts. Many of their pieces were acquired from some of the most reputable sources for antiquities in the 20th century, including the Brummer Gallery, Kalebdjian Frères, and Dikran Kelekian.

Perhaps the craftsman was not Iranian but west Asiatic, a last practitioner of the Syrian metal-art which had developed in a Gnostic milieu perpetuating themes ultimately Phoenician. But the bird could also be Persian, from the heroic age of the eigth to tenth centuries which produced the vigorous early lustrepainted pottery.”
