The Collector's Auction –
As another year comes to a close, our final Collector’s Auction of 2022 looks both to the past and to the future. Alongside traditional Australian bush landscapes by Robert Lovett, Hugh Sawrey, and Ernest Buckmaster we find modern representations of the land by artists such as Basil Hadley, Ian Abdulla, and Gloria Petyarre. Equally so in the category of still life, traditional examples including two by Australia’s iconic botanical artist and illustrator Ellis Rowan, sit alongside contemporary interpretations such as those by Bill Coleman, Harry Sherwin and Philip Wolfhagens - whose triptych would possibly not even be distinguishable as a still life if not for its title; Still Life Triptych No. 1. In the rare and important collection of ceramics from Ambassador Yusof Hashim and his wife Margaret Hashim we see the incredible technical skills developed in the Bat Trang

kilns of Vietnam which have existed since at least the 14th century. The variety in colour, decoration and shapes is not unlike the skillset employed by the modern masters of Murano glass also displayed in the auction. The auction concludes with five impressive lots from a private collection of Meissen and Sèvres porcelain, the likes of which are rarely found on the Australian market. The tankards, vases and snuff box are delicately painted with flowers, figures, landscapes and nautical scenes, of which the enduring quality not only marks them as pieces of yore but has also ensured their timeless appeal for centuries more to come. We hope in this edition of The Collector’s Auction you find treasures to fill your home, to place under the Christmas tree, to mark a special occasion or simply to bring you joy. — Madeleine Norton | Associate Head of Decorative Arts & Art, Sydney

50 ‘THE ISLE OF SAN’ BY LEON GELLERT (1919) WITH ETCHINGS BY NORMAN LINDSAY Printed by Art in Australia, edition 2/120 (of which 100 were for sale), folio, quarter vellum over green cloth, frontispiece portrait of Gellert after an etching by Lindsay, including five original etchings by Norman Lindsay each signed, dated, titled and numbered in pencil with lettered tissue-guards, a signed inscription by Norman Lindsay written to the original owner on the inside cover. Overall 38 x 29cm $10,000-15,000
The Isle of San was the first deluxe edition book printed by Art in Australia and was sold out in a single afternoon upon release (Leon Gellert to John Hetherington, 6th January 1972). Lindsay first collaborated with Gellert in 1917, illustrating sixteen pen drawings to accompany Gellert's successful Angus & Robertson edition of Songs of a Campaign. The idea for Gellert's fantasy The Isle of San had apparently come to him in his dreams, its poetic landscape is saturated with the themes of beauty and the physicality of love. These replaced the nightmare horrors of war which had haunted Gellert since his experiences at Gallipoli and was ideally suited to the sensuality and sexual power which permeated Lindsay's aesthetic vision. Lindsay was greatly impressed by its potential to become a book which would "stir in booklovers the lust of possession." The cycle of fifty-two poems and its illustrations were produced concurrently and the etchings were printed by Lindsay's wife, Rose. Rose later described one of the book’s famous illustrations, The Grey-eyed Girl, as “… the most difficult plate I have ever had to print, with its background of clear copper, which had to be hand wiped without touching the head of the girl. At that time I was not too good at hand wiping and did many prints, which I had to destroy. The difference in hand wiping is evident in the three proof pulls in the Mitchell Library folios, the background in the third proof being much clearer than the first and second.” (Rose Lindsay, A Model Wife, p 205). It is thought that The Greyeyed Girl was based on Annie Brennan, the notorious Sydney bohemian and courtesan of legendary beauty and daughter of Gellert’s fellow poet, Christopher Brennan. In a letter to Jack Lindsay, it was even suggested by Ray Lindsay that Annie Brennan was Gellert’s inspiration for the entire work (Ray Lindsay, A letter from Sydney, 1983, p 32).

The Vollard Suite is a set of 100 etchings considered by many to be the most significant cycle of prints made by Pablo Picasso. Named after and commissioned by influential art dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard in 1933, the suite forms one of the most important graphic works of the 20th century. The series was created over a six-year period and paid for with original paintings by PierreAuguste Renoir and Paul Cézanne from Vollard’s personal collection. The neoclassical works explore some of Picasso’s favoured themes and most obsessive thoughts during the 1930s including the artist and model, the artist’s desire for his young mistress and muse Marie-Thérèse Walter, his meditations on Rembrandt, and his mythical Minotaur alter-ego. In the present work, made on 29 November 1934 in Paris, a youthful sailor converses with his older, weathered counterpart (whose gnarled face is strikingly similar to that of an aged Rembrandt) over a drink. The heavy, almost feverishly-worked figure of the older man in contrast to the youth’s simple outline acts as a symbol of his life experience and demonstrates Picasso’s preoccupation with youthfulness and the lessons that the old masters and classical sculptors have to offer. Vollard tragically died in a car accident before the plates could be printed, and due to the escalation of WWII, the first series of the Suite Vollard was not offered for sale until the 1950s. Complete sets are found in numerous institutions globally, including at the National Gallery of Australia, the British Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. 17

THE VIETNAM COLLECTION ‘Dato’ Yusof Hashim (born 1939 – 2022 Terengganu, Malaysia) was a respected Malaysian diplomat whose career spanned almost thirty years, from his first posting in Wellington, New Zealand in 1969 to serving in Germany, Vietnam, Indonesia, the United States of America, Pakistan and Morocco. Yusof served in Vietnam twice, in 1981 and returned as Ambassador in 1988. Margaret Storey (born 1944 - 1997 Sydney, Australia) met Yusof in an art class in 1963 while he was studying at Sydney University. They fell madly in love, married in 1965 in Malaysia

and returned to Australia where Yusof graduated in 1968 with a Master of Economics, then returning to Malaysia where Yusof joined the Malaysian Foreign Service. Yusof and Margaret’s love for the arts would grow into a lifelong passion for painting and art collecting, whilst immersing themselves in cultures of the world and the people they met. They travelled extensively in the countries they were posted visiting museums, galleries, and places of historic significance. Their first posting to Vietnam in 1981 -1983 was not easy, Vietnam was still closed, travel restrictions were in place and living conditions were difficult. In those early days, various Embassies were set up in rooms in the Metropole Hotel in
Mr Yusof & Mrs Margaret Hashim, 1967
Hanoi and food and essentials for Diplomats were flown in from Thailand fortnightly. With very little entertainment, Margaret and Yusof attended a local art school for silk painting and pottery whilst exploring Hanoi and fully appreciating the heritage, history and culture of Vietnam. Together, they discovered the joys of collecting ceramics and over time they amassed an interesting and important collection. When they returned to Hanoi in 1988-1990, Yusof then appointed Ambassador, they were welcomed back by their artisan friends and continued growing their collection. At a time when Vietnam was overcoming a terrible war and just opening up to the world, this collection developed out of a love of history, culture and art and includes some very special ceramic pieces from Vietnam.
