The Kelton Collection –
When hearing a collector’s story, we can often take for granted the intricate decision making and refined focus that is required to retain the integrity of their collection. This level of care and consideration is even more impressive when combined with genuine passion and enthusiasm. Collected over four decades by the late Mr. Richard Kelton (1929-2019), the Kelton Collection is arguably one of the most important private collections of Aboriginal Australian art. Richard Kelton was an indefatigable collector, and his seemingly idiosyncratic collection is best understood through his principal preoccupations: sailing, water and the Pacific Ocean. Other pillars of his collection include art of the China Trade, Paul Gauguin’s Tahiti paintings and sculptures, Oceanic art and artifacts, maritime art and instruments, and the California plein air artists. Through this lens, these objects, subjects and histories interact in dynamic and provocative ways. Richard Kelton first encountered Aboriginal art in 1979 when he joined a scientific expeditionary sailing trip to Australia. Subsequently, he began acquiring select paintings from Papunya Tula, and sculpture from Western Arnhem and the Tiwi Islands, and so began a lifelong passion for Australian Indigenous art. Over the next four decades, Kelton’s interest in and appreciation of Aboriginal artists and art saw his collection grow to over 1,500 works, all housed in his Marina del Rey residence in California. His frequent trips to Australia guaranteed access to some of the best quality works available at the time. Richard Kelton was an early advocate for Aboriginal art to be shown in museums within the same curatorial and academic context as other modern and contemporary art. He staged the first exhibition from his collection in 1980, Past and Present Art of the Australian Aborigines at the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena, California. In 1982, The Kelton Foundation was established to facilitate the exhibition, loan, and research of his collection, lending works to international museum

shows, including the Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri Retrospective mounted by the Art Gallery of South Australia and Papunya Tula: Genius and Genesis at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In total, there were 14 stand-alone exhibitions of his collection, during which Richard would delight in delivering a personal lecture. To have these works exhibited together outside of Australia was rarity enough, but to have a collector so dedicated to the appreciation and recognition of these artists in public alignment was even more so. The Kelton Collection traces the arc of the 20th Century Aboriginal art movement from the Hermannsburg watercolour painters of the 1950s, to the artists of Arnhem Land and the Tiwi Islands of the 1960s and 70s, collected retrospectively. Artists of the East Kimberley were collected contemporaneously and his fascination with the painters of the Western and Central Deserts from the 1970s onwards is evidenced by his attention to the artists of Papunya, Balgo, and Yuendumu. Richard Kelton collected artists and movements in depth in order to understand where they came from and their relationship to the spiritual and physical worlds that sustained them. The Kelton family are thrilled to be returning these works to Australia, and Leonard Joel are honoured to be presenting one of the most important collections of Aboriginal Art at auction.

TIWI The Tiwi Islands, located in the Timor Sea 100km north of Darwin, are home to the Tiwi people and consist of two main islands, Melville Island and Bathurst Island. The Apsely Strait divides the islands and separates them from the Australian mainland, a geographical position at the heart of Tiwi culture’s ingenuity. The cultural identity of its people is expressed in jilamara – body painting designs, carving and painting tutuni – poles, making tunga – bark baskets and body adornments, and performing kwakakawayi – songs. Participation in ceremonial and performative cultural expression has existed for many millennia. However, it was only during the twentieth century that a broader public became aware of the splendour of Tiwi artistic production in its value of individuality, innovation and independence in carving and painting.

Western Arnhem Land This region is dominated by the Arnhem Escarpment, a vast range of rocky hills home to thousands of rock art galleries, some more than 30,000 years old. The Kunwinikju people of Western Arnhem Land belong to an area bounded on the west of the East Alligator River and the east by the Liverpool and Mann Rivers. Art from this broad western region is unique in its figurative emphasis. Dynamic forms of Ancestral beings, mimi spirits and animals in movement grace the overhangs of the rocky escarpment in a dramatic style of X-ray images found nowhere else in First Nations Australia. The dialogue between the visible and the invisible in the art of Western Arnhem Land is depicted by the edifying Ancestral narratives captured by these figures. This rich rock art tradition is a constant source of inspiration for contemporary Kunwinijku artists.

Western Desert (Papunya) The Central Australian government settlement of Papunya, 240km west of Alice Springs, was established in the late 1950s to advance the assimilation of ‘bush’ Aborigines and accommodate the increasing populations of people in the already settled Aboriginal communities and reserves. Papunya holds an almost mythical status as the genesis of Australia’s Western Desert art movement. Born from legendary beginnings in a unique time and place, Papunya is where a group of Pintupi men started painting on salvaged materials and revealed their cultural strength to the rest of the discordant settlement and broader world. First publicly displayed on the wall of the Papunya School, the men proceeded to outline the foundations that would develop the central idea of the Papunya movement. This legacy continues in Papunya Tula Artists’ strength, diversity, and innovation.

Central Arnhem Land - Milingimbi The island community of Milingimbi is located off the Arnhem Land coast, around 400km east of Darwin. The community has a diverse culture influenced by long term contact with Sulawesi, one of the four Greater Sunda Islands of Indonesia and the coming together of over twelve clans from both the mainland and ‘salt water’ country of the Crocodile Islands. In Yolŋu culture, the land, sea, ceremony, songs and material art production are all intertwined and strictly clan-based. The ritually repeated symbols expressing these connections are evidence of the artists’ clan identity and are found in bark paintings, ceremonial poles and carvings. Artwork from Milingimbi has been vigorously collected since the 1920s when the first Methodist missionaries arrived. By the 1960s, the centre was a leader in establishing the market for traditional Yolŋu Art.

Northeast Arnhem Land (Yirrkala) The art of the Yirrkala region has captivated audiences since the township was founded as a mission in 1935. The sacred art of this region details the spiritual dynamism behind the ongoing Creation and continuing identity of the fresh and saltwater Country of North-East Arnhem Land. The emerging art from Yirrkala in the mid-1950s is a catalyst in the non-Aboriginal art world’s realisation that First Nations Australian art is a unique and profound independent art tradition – the equal of any other global form. Yirrkala is also the home of land rights. Its artists were amongst the first Indigenous Australians to recognise the potential use of visual art as a political tool and put this into practice with the historic Yirrkala Church Panels and Yirrkala Bark Petition dating from 1963.

Hermannsburg Located 125km west of Alice Springs, in Central Australia, Hermannsburg was founded by Lutheran missionaries in 1877, yet the Western Arrernte people have lived in this region for thousands of years. In 1930, Hermannsburg saw a significant change of direction for First Nations Australian art after Albert Namatjira began his distinctive style following seeing an exhibition by travelling artists to the mission. Namatjira’s creative outpouring of delicate and instinctive watercolours of his Country gave rise to a continuing ‘school’ of artists among his Western Arrernte relatives and other Arrernte people. Although its beginnings were bound in a heritage surpassed as tourist fodder, it has been a gift that sparked the representation of the land from the perspective of First Nations people. The detailed figurative renderings of the desert captured by Namatjira continue to transform through his successors, referencing the ‘invisible’ acts of ancestral travels and the Dreaming.

Yuendumu Yuendumu is located 290km northwest of Alice Springs along the Tanami Highway, which branches off the Stuart Highway 25 km north of Alice Springs. Due to its proximity, the Papunya painting movement was closely observed by senior Warlpiri of the region when it emerged in the early 1970s. While the men at Papunya publicly experimented with their early designs on temporary and transient surfaces, the Warlpiri took time to consider their relationship to art and to consider who among themselves, including women, might take part in the reformulation of traditional forms for the European market. Since the late 1980s, Yuendumu has been celebrated for its bright colours and intricate designs. Unlike the formal work of Papunya Tula Artists, who decided to restrict their palette to ochre like colours, Yuendumu painters have always embraced vivid acrylic hues to depict the power of their Dreaming stories.

While reflecting aspects of Kimberley rock art and ceremonial

body paint, artist Rover Thomas’ rare approach and vision was an influential force in the style of painting of this region. The bold depictions of his subjects outlined with white clay dotting was an innovative design invention that influenced what was to become the style recognised as the Turkey Creek or Warmun School of painting. Layers of thick traditional pigment and charcoal affixed with bush gum and resin binders gave the spiritual and physical representation of the sites and landscapes an unparalleled textual quality.

Utopia The Utopia Homelands are adjacent to the traditional lands of the Eastern Anmatyarre and Alyawarre people, about 270 km north-east of Alice Springs. This area of 1800 square kilometres was named Utopia by the first white settlers in 1927 and subsequently came to be used as cattle station country. Paintings from Utopia express the strength, vitality and diversity of women’s perspective and relationship to Country. In 1978 women from this region learned batik, where they transmitted their depiction of the Dreaming with freedom and experimentation to acrylic and canvas in 1988. Some women developed styles using either fine dots or fine lines over a background of colour learned from the batik process. Others used broad gestural mark-making related directly to body paint designs or markings on Country.

Balgo The present-day Wirrimanu Aboriginal Community at Balgo had its origin as a mission established in 1939 on ‘Rockhole Station’, near Halls Creek in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. One of the most isolated of Australia’s desert settlements, the Balgo community, has strong Pintupi links through the Western Desert, and several leading Papunya artists visited relatives in the area during the late 1970s. Having observed the rise of the Papunya movement for some years, the people at Balgo began painting around 1983, where a recognisably ‘Balgo’ style eventually emerged. Although the first works reflected traditional iconography, the artists pushed their ancestral narratives towards abstraction by removing figures in favour of an outline and drawing on the evocative qualities of colour. This deconstruction of the iconographic references combined with the bright, evocative palette became a distinctive mark of the Balgo style.

— To be read in conjunction with our General Conditions of Business as displayed during the viewing and auction.
CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS / SUMMARY Special Conditions of Sale – Jewellery Jewellery and watches offered by Leonard Joel are sometimes accompanied by an Independent valuation as stated in the catalogue. These valuations are conducted by registered valuers and are offered purely as independent opinions. Variation may be found as to the colour, clarity and size of stones described in these reports, consequently Leonard Joel does not guarantee these Independent Valuations. Where stones can be weighed accurately, weights will be provided. Weights of set stones are estimates only and are provided to the best of our technical ability. Gram weight on gold and other precious metals are also given as an approximation. Wristwatches and pocket watches are offered in there current condition and Leonard Joel does not guarantee that they are in working order. Items may be thoroughly inspected during the viewing period or by prior arrangement.
Property subject to the Artist Resale Royalty Lots with the § sign will be subject to payment of the Artist Resale Royalty in the event that the lot is sold for a hammer price of $1,000 or more. The Australian Resale Royalty is a flat rate of 5 percent (5%) levy on the hammer price (including GST). The Australian Resale Royalty is payable by the buyer in addition to the buyer’s premium plus applicable GST.
Authenticity Certificates As various manufacturers may not issue certificates of authenticity, Leonard Joel has no obligation to furnish a buyer with a certificate of authenticity from the manufacturer, except where specifically noted in the catalogue. Unless Leonard Joel is satisfied that it should cancel the sale in accordance with the Limited Warranty provided in the General Conditions of Business, the failure of a manufacturer to issue a certificate will not constitute grounds for cancellation of the sale.
Estimates Estimates are a reflection of Leonard Joel’s opinion of the current market values, based on historic and current market realisations of similar lots. Estimates are inclusive of any GST, which may be applicable. Actual prices at this sale may fall short or exceed the estimates.
GST In the event that the vendor is registered for Goods & Services Tax (GST), the invoice to the buyer will provide a separate entry for the GST which is included in the purchase price. All Leonard Joel charges for services referred to in this catalogue are exclusive of GST. Overseas buyers may be entitled to a rebate for GST charged. For further information contact: Marie McCarthy accounts@leonardjoel.com.au Admission Leonard Joel has the right at its sole discretion without assigning any reason therefore to refuse admission to the premises or attendance at any of its sales of any person. Commission (Absentee) Bids Leonard Joel will execute absentee bids when instructed. Lots will be bought as cheaply as allowed by other bids and/or reserves. Telephone Bidding Buyers interested in bidding by telephone should contact Leonard Joel as soon as possible. Please note that telephone bidding facilities are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Bidder Registration To recognise bidders during the sale all intending buyers are required to complete a Bidder Registration Form providing full photo identification and appropriate references if required before the Sale which will enable them to bid by way of a numbered paddle allocated to them. Buyer’s Premium There will be a buyer’s premium added to all purchases. The buyer’s premium will be calculated at the rate of 25% of the hammer price on each lot. This is inclusive of GST. The buyer’s premium is reflected by a reduction in the Seller’s Commission and is a common practice throughout Australia and overseas.
