Reflection
2017 - current Bachelor of Design
In design, I have always been motivated by the questioning of what concepts that can be implemented to what I’m creating. I believe that there are always different concepts that can be brought to architectural design that has the potential of elevating designs to becomes something else. These concepts can come from unexpected areas, and I always aim to discover more of how they can be implemented to create a well-conceptualized design.

In this subject, deepening my skills in Rhino, Illustrator, and InDesign, and learning new software like Grasshopper has helped brought my design process to reality in ways I didn’t think possible. New techniques and workflow learned throughout the subject has dramatically impacted the outcome of my final design. For example, in using parametric software, the capability of creating iterations of design has helped me explore designs more thoroughly to understand the direction of the visual impact that is desired.

I aspire to bring my knowledge of architectural history to my future designs, balancing modern design techniques like parametric software as a tool to respect designs of the past. In my waffle design, I was inspired by Kenzo Tange’s Yoyogi Stadium’s use of the parabolic surface, connecting one point to a surface, which gives it the quality of an interesting transitional shape of two geometrically different forms that adapt the design to a landscape. I hope to bring more historic conceptual references to designs in the future as inspirations.

In the future, I wish to improve in showing more control in design. In this subject, I learned how technical skills of presenting visuals impacts how a design is received, detailed things that can be considered less important turns out to have an important part in the outcome. Articulation in things such as line weights, composition, saturation, all matters in clarifying the design’s form, and can be argued that it is as important as the design’s form itself. In the future, I wish to apply this knowledge in my future works.

Entrance
A key concept I learned from modelling Zaha Hadid’s Burnham Pavilion was how she used the threshold. In her design, the threshold is cleverly integrated with the design’s form, which simultaneously corresponds with the circulation suggested in her design. Using the threshold, she was also able to control places which areas are for pause and play. The pause areas are for viewing the site’s internal space, and for viewing the interior’s projector, all of which is considered in the design. I was able further understand these concepts in creating the diagrams for this module.

Surface and Waffle
My main design intention for the surface iterations was to create an
enveloping surface that is heavily based on the horizontal plane that gradually forms itself to a point within the sky. This is heavily inspired by Kenzo Tange’s St Mary Cathedral and the Yoyogi National Gymnasium. The final model has asymmetry as a variety, and relation between the two surfaces with one slightly larger than the other and emphasizes the gradual shape from the ground plane to the top point. The panels support the visual form of the structure. openings are created to be as large as possible for the waffle structure to be visible. Slightly higher sides of the panel were used to control the viewing of the interior, and each surface’s panels are in opposite iterations to create antagonistic relation between them.
Hollow panels allow maximum light and view of the internal structure Differences in height from each panels create control of viewing of the internal structure in certain angles. The opposite sides of the structure are in reverse orientations to create interest and a cohesive relationship
A supporting waffle structure in the shape of the enveloping form creates an enclosed interior with a diminishing internal area as the form heightens from the base

Solid and Void
The cube’s form in this corner is apparent as a contrast from the top plane towards the ground that is transitioned by the supportive areas created by the boolean forms
The intersecting internal booleans creates spaces within spaces that creates openings and division between interior and transitional areas
The spaces inbetween the boolean creates a supportive structure that blends with the interior form
The curvature of the boolean creates a gradiating transition between the ground plane towards the structure

My main design intention with the second task was to create circular arching caves focused on a corner of the base box. The spatial qualities created by the Boolean has made organic forms of arches and variety of openings, some with openings within openings. the opening within the opening if seen as a pavilion creates a border for the transitional space towards the more internal interior. the deeper interiors are also facilitated by openings to allow light. a column form created by the space in between the Boolean shape has form heavily related to the opening’s shape, which helps transition itself towards the heavier base on the structure’s opposite side in the horizontal plane. the heavier side is also well transitioned to the ground plane with its form transitioning in a semicircular notion.

The Bloom Pavillion One of the concepts I wanted to explore in this pavilion is the usage of internal light space and the relationship of threshold and circulation. Inspired by Zaha Hadid’s Burnham pavilion, I used openings for internal light in the and integrated the main form with its openings while corresponding to the site with the purpose of controlling its circulation. The pavilion is made of two main surfaces, the larger one is facilitated with seating directed to the other surface for performances and seminars. The ground is a facilitating part of the threshold, giving a gradual sense of spatial transition as it controls the movement towards the pavilion. Using wood helps the organic curvatures of the pavilions form.
