LIVING HOUSE

THE TERRARIUM The renovated design for 4 Macarthur place in Carlton North is based on the original site’s interlocking interior and exterior space, which was made due to site regulations for window availability in vacant bedrooms. However, a room for improvement exists as this form has lowered the quality of the site’s internal circulation and progression of space. In the design renovation, an abstraction of internal and external volumes were done to both reinnovate the original idea of interlocking space and improve the flow of internal and external circulation throuhgout the site. The name, the terrarium describes the internal space surrounded by the divided massing of the house that heavily integrates living systems as experiential element that accomodates the circulation of the house. The abstraction of volumes that were made intends to engage living systems with the resident’s daily routines, creating thresholds that obscures the interior and exteriors.

LIVING NEIGHBOURHOOD

THE TERRACE The terrace is a double entendre, signifying agricultural methods used for cultivation and architectural stepping of forms that often results in the creation of balconies. The form of the terrace is based on the analysis of the original’s sites planning, which included the classification of louder commercial areas and silent residential areas. An axis was created with the intention of segmentation, which in the massing became a threshold intended for the two different areas intended for public space. To allow laneway activation and interraction with the surrounding site, selected areas of the site facing the laneway were opened. To allow a semi private area exclusive for residents, balconies were formed to support neighbour interactions. The stepping of forms that was created inspired the homage formation of agricultural terraces, which continued in the incorporation of living systems throughout the site as experiential elements of the project’s exteriors.
