Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)

The difference between diagrams and signs and symbols can be compared by the types of informations that each depicts. signs and symbols are primarily used to display dynamic informations, and they are mainly a representational form of data. Compared to signs and symbols, diagrams display more abstract types of information, it is described as a tool that depicts relationships, and preimposes how forms will be used. it has the ability to give an understanding of spatial information, yet also can be used to clarify certain conceptual processes or ideas.

The model was first created by moulding an elipsical shape with the Rhino command Cageedit to bend the elipsical shape based on top view and elevations to create an accurate form. It is continued by extruding diagonal lines which have been traced from the plans to create the structure which are then lofted together. The internal space was created by tracing the plan views. and leveling the traced curves appropriate to the elevation. therse are then lofted to the outerline of the main set of openings on top of the strucure. two circular curves was traced for each opening which are then projected to both the outer form and the inner loftings. these projected are then lofted together to create the entrances. the openings are created by projecting the shapes of the opening from the plan view to the top o the outer form.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discuss how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)

In lessons for students in Architecture (2005), Hertzberger acknowleged the importance of thresholds with how they act as transition between territories. Zaha Hadid Architects’ Burnham Pavillion shows this idea with it’s entrance areas’ multiple functionalities. Firstly, the entrances serves a function as a pathway which is caused by the intended placement of the two entrances which are alligned to one another. secondlly, these entrances areas are also used for some as pausing areas for people use to oversee the whole interior. lastly, other than as an access, its form is also used to support the design intention. Zaha Hadid Architect’s main design idea was to celebrate Daniel Burnham’s visionary urban planning dreams by exposing the best innovations of ideas and technological advancements of today. One of the ways they did this was by creating fluidity and a organic configuration in the structure. The entrances were a way to emphasize this futuristic and organic form which was intended. the entrances had circular forms which lofts through from the exterior to a much smaller interior which is also circular in form, and the lofts corresponds with the interior compositionally. these multiple purposes th entrance areas serves shows the correlation to hertzbergers idea of threshold.

Isometric

Zaha Hadid - Burnham Pavilion 2009 A north east view of the burnham pavillion The modeling process was difficult at first, but after learning a few new rhino commands, the process has become clearer and fairly understandable. This profile exposes all of the openings and the inside form of the model. special detail was especially put into the interior, and the curvature inbetween the main diagonal structural lines. From this process i learned that in this design really puts circulation into mind after seeing how well composed the insides are and the placing of the entrances, which acknowledges and utilizes thresholds located there for the purpose of increasing the overall experience of the pavillion that is closely connected with the design intention of creating an organic and circular form.

Week Two Diagrams

Transitional Space

Pause and Play

This diagram showcases how the spaces created by the form of the entrances creates a transitional area of experiencing the pavillion

This diagram shows the areas in which people are most likely to pause and experience visuals of the interior and areas that supports directions of mobility and how that line of circulation correlates to the form
