They have gained the skills they need to transform their lives. I met Phul Maya and her husband on my recent trip to Nepal. She told me she found out she had leprosy 8 years ago and is now cured. After completing 12 months of treatment at a specialised leprosy clinic. Her family members were all checked for leprosy too. Sadly, proper treatment came too late to prevent some loss of feeling in both her feet. Phul Maya first joined a Leprosy Mission Self-Care Group. She learned how to prevent further damage or injury to her leprosyeffected limbs. The group has now developed into a Self-Help Group. Thanks to the support of people like you, Phul Maya got a goat and some grant money. Now she and her other group members are learning how to start a business. She now dreams of opening a retail shop. Your generosity has helped reached

We recently met Damber at The Leprosy Mission’s Anandaban Hospital in Nepal. He was recovering from hand surgery. At 17, Damber wanted answers to the skin lesions on his body and clawed hand from his local hospital. Damber was diagnosed with leprosy, and given medication. But the hospital didn’t tell him it was leprosy. Sadly, Damber then suffered type one leprosy reaction. Leprosy is so cruel and heartless. For some, reaction can be fatal. There can be skin rashes, high temperatures and complications with the liver. Leprosy is 100% curable. If caught in time, and with the correct treatment, there may be no visible damage. Unfortunately, this was not the case for Damber. Why is this horrific disease still attacking people’s bodies so ferociously? It’s so unfair and unjust! Fortunately Damber found The Leprosy Mission. He now has monthly consultations with a medical team. He took the right combination of Multi-Drug Therapy for 14 months and is now cured. Thanks to your support, Damber continues treatment at The Leprosy Mission’s Anandaban Hospital. It is here that he has received the love, the care, and the surgery, he’s needed. thanks to supporters like you! Damber can now move his fingers well enough to give him a grip again. He can now

When I was 10 years old, I was rejected from my community because I had leprosy. My home was in a remote village and they accused me of being a sinner and that I was impure. I, along with my elder sister and younger brother were rejected. We were all neglected by our family because we have leprosy. Cured from leprosy at Anandaban Leprosy Hospital in Kathmandu, I then got married. Sadly, my husband died after 5 years of marriage. Today I am living with my two daughters in my

own house which was built with help from NLT. I enjoy my work in NLT even though I have some physical deficiency. I glue leather bags and cut pieces. I learnt these skills with my work colleagues and I get continued support from my supervisor. I get very fair wages. The working environment of our workshop is good. Also, the organisation gives us many facilities like festival allowance, education allowance, medical treatment, provident fund and inflation allowance.

I am now self-dependent and I feel proud that I am able to earn for myself and my children. If I was not working here in NLT, then I would have been living a very difficult life. My daughters are both going to good colleges. I have a decent house to live in and helpful work colleagues. $ Leprosy can attack and destroy the nerves in the body, especially in the hands, feet and face resulting in loss of feeling and/or function. If leprosy is not correctly diagnosed or medical attention is not sought or provided, the nerve damage can result in problems that can be permanent. Ulcers on the hands or feet that won’t heal, deformities of hands with clawed fingers and abnormal function of the feet so they can no longer walk normally because of a drop foot or similar condition. Protective shoes, reconstructive surgery and physiotherapy can make a huge difference for many people. But in some cases where the disease has been neglected and severe infection and ulceration has occurred, amputation may be the only option. An artificial limb may be possible to provide increased function and mobility.

Thank you for ‘loving thy neighbour’ in PNG! Thanks to the support of people like you, Clare and others with leprosy in Papua New Guinea are being found, diagnosed and assisted through treatment. Clare found out she had leprosy when field workers from The Leprosy Mission Papua New Guinea visited her school. Her parents had thought it was “just an ulcer”. The field workers educated the teachers and students about leprosy and Clare’s whole family too! They explained leprosy is curable and all about its treatment. This was a great relief to Clare’s parents, who also have four other children. The Leprosy Mission workers visit regularly to check Clare hasn’t missed any doses and they are pleased with her progress. Clare is pleased too. She told us: “After treatment I started performing better at school. I have feeling returning in my leg now.” “I want to be able to study and go to university. When I grow up, I want to be a primary school teacher. I have a heart to become a teacher.” She is also keen to help others with leprosy. “If I meet a student with leprosy, I would try

The diagnosis had also come too late to prevent the ‘tell-tale signs’ of leprosy taking hold. As well as patches on her skin, Kanti has developed a drop foot and a painful ulcer on her sole. This makes it difficult for her to walk. She desperately wants to run, dance and play with her friends. But instead Kanti must now take daily medication for up to a year and, for now, wear specially designed orthotic shoes. It is sad to see someone so young already having suffered so much.
